Wanted to try Kat Khao for some time as we were craving some Vietnamese food. Granted, this isn't traditional Vietnamese food, but it's more Asian Fusion. First, the decor inside is really nice. Whoever handled the interior design did an excellent job. Really dope ambiance with the walls and lighting. To start, we ordered the Vegan Summer Rolls. This was really really good. Love how the rolls were generously filled with veggies. Made eating with chopsticks a little tougher, but a challenge worth pursuing. For the veggie meal, I went with the Crispy Eggplant. This is worth coming back for. It was a very generous portion, but you got a lot of kick with the five spice and the extra chili. Even though it's just eggplant, it fills you up without any doubt. Unfortunately, my other half wanted to try the prawns and it was a bit too difficult for her to eat because it was overcooked. Also, we tried the ube tiramisu and didn't really feel the fusion elements in it. It was okay, just nothing special. I'll come back for the eggplant and the summer rolls. If there's another veggie option in the fall, I may consider that. TBD on whether my other half will return though. 4 for me overall, but with caveats. read more

Wandered into Kat Khao on a Saturday date night as we were walking by and this was the perfect choice! Located right in the heart of Jersey City downtown, I was pleasantly surprised that they accepted a walk-in on a Saturday. The service was quick, kind, and attentive. Every single dish we tried was beyond innovative and delicious. Hokkaido Scallop Crudo- easily my favorite dish of the night. Nice and balanced, and loved the kick from the Thai chili Teba Gyoza Stuffed Wings- who would have thought to put an entire gyoza in a chicken wing! This so so creative and incredibly tasty as well Chilean Sea Bass Chả Cá- cooked to perfection and I loved the noodles they served on the side, which completely the sauce perfectly Lychee Paloma- fun little mocktail that wasn't too sweet and had the perfect bitter taste from the N/A spirit Ube Tiramisu- an uber forward treat! We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit here...the Japanese/Vietnamese fusion concept is very well executed. It is a BYOB establishment but they have delicious mocktails to order as well. I enjoyed a Hanoi Gimlet, made with cucumber, lime, and Thai basil. My wife and I split 2 mains, crispy eggplant (with a miso-yuzu glaze) and chicken katsu noodle salad (with sweet potato noodles). A tiny restaurant with BIG flavors! I honestly did not expect the food to be this amazing! It's a small and unassuming restaurant from the outside, but the food is anything but ordinary. Our waitress was so lovely, sweet, and welcoming, and she gave us some great recommendations. I went with the Hokkaido Scallop Crudo and the Mushroom Noodle, which was a new item and both were absolutely delicious! My friend ordered the Filet Mignon Banh Mi Sando, and she absolutely loved it. Everything came out so flavorful that we basically forgot about taking pictures and just devoured our food. Honestly, the fact that I have zero pictures might be the best review I can give. I had heard good things about Kat Khao since they opened a year ago. Reviews and photos looked good, and I was surprised to see full availability on a Friday night. We came as a group of 5 and were seated at an oval table in the back of the restaurant. It seemed like there was only one server for the entire restaurant. The service was extremely slow. We ordered the stuffed chicken wings, scallop crudo, crab garlic noodles, waygu sando, and unshaken beef. The food was very good. Loved the crudo, chicken wing, waygu sando, fried eggplant... everything was delicious, The service was a shame. Not only was it very slow, but the server was so nonchalant and didn't seem to care we were waiting around forever with no attention. We probably won't be back. A very modern take on Vietnamese - Japanese food. My friends and I came for restaurant week and had a good time. A reservation is highly recommended. Our appetizers looked great and tasted fantastic. The pho had a bunch of meat in it but it came out kinda cold. My friends got the crab garlic noodles and felt like it was a bit too salty. The dessert was mid. The matcha flan was okay and the tiramisu was dry. The service was a bit slow with only two servers for all the tables. Tried out this place during restaurant week over the summer for the first time and was genuinely impressed. Haven't been to a place that checked all the boxes in a while - flavorful, presented nicely, compact menu but still good variety, and affordable price points. Food was amazing. Katsu sandwich was amazing, great flavor in the chicken and toppings and a pretty big portion to share. Pho is good, comforting bowl of hot soup can't really go wrong. Crab pasta was overflowing with crab. Service was always quick and friendly, water cup was never empty! The restaurant has a chill vibe, a little industrial with the concrete but decorated nicely. Such a surprise to find such flavors in Jersey City! The chicken katsu noodle salad came with purple sweet potato noodles and the chewiness goes really well with the chicken cutlet, veggies and spices. The crispy eggplant is one of my favorites, it's sooo crispy! We weren't super impressed with the pho and sandos but they were delicious anyways. It's definitely more of a casual and cozy vibe that's great for a weekday comfort dinner. Service is great. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol but we enjoyed all the mocktails just as much! Kat Khao has been on my list for a while and so happy I stopped by on a Friday evening! My friend and I decided to share smaller plates over a bigger entree to have a bigger variety. We started with the Beef Tataki and the Scallop Crudo. The Beef Tataki was great, a little heavy on the onion but nothing extraordinary. The Hokkaido Scallop Crudo was a little fishy, probably not the freshest, but can be concealed with a heap of the zesty coconut milk-based sauce. We then had the Filet Mignon Bahn Mi Sando and Teba Gyoza Stuffed Wings - The Sando was a fun fusion of japanese meat sando with pickled vietnamese veggies. The stuffed wings were a nice treat, think a crispy savory chicken wing married a spring roll. All in all, would love to come back to try the other dishes. No cocktails, but maybe this is something they are working on as they do have a giant bar. read more

I ordered the sea bass and the pho, and I can honestly say it was the best pho I've had in New York. The broth was truly rich and deeply flavorful -- you can tell it was made with care, not just built up with add-ins. **JC Restaurant Week Review** I had seen on Instagram that Kat Khao was participating in JC Restaurant Week, so I made a reservation for a random Tuesday night. The menu was $40 per person for a 3-course dinner, which I thought was a great deal. There are 4 appetizer options, 3 entree options, and 2 dessert options. For apps, we had the Beef Tataki and the Chicken Banh Mi Sando. The Chicken Sando had chicken katsu in it, served on Hokkaido milk bread and was absolutely fantastic. For entrees, we had the Viet Cajun Prawns and the Crab Garlic Noodles. I know, I know, how could we go to a Viet spot and not get the pho? It was 90 degrees outside and the AC wasn't running that day. I just couldn't! The prawns were a little bit spicy, but very tasty. The crab noodles had so much crab, I was so pleasantly surprised. For dessert, we got both the tiramisu and the matcha flan. The matcha flan, was by far, the best option. It was so good! Service was fine, but I would definitely come back for the food. read more

Steak tataki was phenomenal! Scallop crudo was fine so if you're in between the two take the steak tataki. The beef was very tender and had excellent flavor. The scallops were fine but needed some acidity and the scallops were not as fresh as they could be I'd say. The waygu pho did not have very good broth flavor or spice -- no anise, cinnamon, bay leaf etc. The meat was VERY good. They clearly use premium cuts of meats here and it shows. It definitely carried the dish. The noodles were great, springy and al dente, did not fall apart. We also got the garlic crab noodles. Noodles cooked well, flavor pretty good but overly salted. DEFINITELY get the matcha flan it was amazing and so unique! Staff was very attentive and extremely polite. Cute modern interior with low lights and not too noisy. If they made some really small modifications to some of the food this place will top notch. Would definitely come back and I hope it does well. read more

We came here with our friends for a double dinner date. All of us had been here before but several years ago and although not a bad experience, did not have a memorable one. WOW, did our opinions change! The husbands also ordered the Hanoi Gimlet and added gin which we brought. The Summer Rolls were crisp, fresh and flavorful. The Eggplant was rich - bursting with flavor and had a delicate tempura batter. The Crudo was creamy yet delicate and very pretty. The Chilean Sea Bass was cooked to perfection. The Crab Garlic Noodles Stole the show with intense flavor and sooooo much crab meat with a caviar surprise! The only dish that fell a little short were the Prawns. This was our first time here and it blew me away! This is some of the highest quality food in Jersey city, so tasty and such a creative combination of flavors. The unshaken beef was perfectly seasoned and so so so tender as was the potato. I felt like I was at a high end steakhouse. The scallop crudo was also amazing, so fresh and the flavor of the coconut milk sauce complemented the scallop perfectly. My partner got the garlic crab noodle dish and also loved it, and the flavors were great. Don't sleep on this place! This will be our new spot to bring friends from the city or out of town. I was desperate for this place to open! I finally got to go and it did not disappoint. We got the crab noodles, unshaken beef, chicken sando, and stuffed wings. Everything was delish but the crab noodles and unshaken beef were real standouts. The matcha flan is also great if you're a matcha girlie like me. Things are a little on the pricey side but they really are that good so I can't complain. The owner came out to talk to us and said they're expanding the menu soon so I'll have to go back! He was a real sweetheart so I'm hoping everything's going well for them The interior is pretty cute with Vietnamese/japanese decor and the service was good. New spot offering up creative and tasty Vietnamese and Japanese fusion dishes! We came in for dinner at 5:30 on a Friday (with reservations just in case), and the restaurant was about halfway full. We liked that it wasn't overly loud--good for conversation. We got the scallop crudo, which was fresh and delicious. There was a generous amount of scallop, surrounded by a sauce made from coconut milk and fish sauce. Probably my favorite dish of the night. We also had the gyoza tebasaki wings (two per order), which is basically a chicken wing turned into a giant dumpling, with a piece of fried chicken serving as the dumpling skin. The chicken was fried nicely--crispy, juicy, and tender, and the filling was tasty. I'm not sure I've ever had fried chicken done this way, but I'm a fan! For entrees, we got the Chilean sea bass and the unshaking beef. The sea bass had good flavor, but I'm not sure it was cooked to the right temperature. I'm used to sea bass having a flaky, fall apart tender texture, but that was only true for half of the fish, with the rest kind of stringy and hard to cut. Not sure what happened. The beef on the other hand looked to be a perfect medium rare, and it was very tender. But it was salted a little unevenly, and some pieces were too salty. The sauce was also slightly too salty, particularly towards the end of the dish as the vegetables soaked up the juices. This was served with a potato pave (rectangular stack of crispy potato layers), which I enjoyed, but I wonder, given the saltiness of the rest of the dish, I probably would have preferred something simpler, like a side of coconut rice. Didn't have room for dessert, but they had a fun mocktail menu, and we ordered the lychee paloma. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd like to come back and try some more dishes! read more

I'm the type of person who will write a review only if I have something negative to say, so this is a first for me: Went to Kat Khao last night--and it was fantastic. Everything we ordered (beef tataki, wings, sea bass, pho) was so flavorful and inventive. Since moving to JC, I've been struggling to find a restaurant that doesn't cater to sports bros and offers more than "that one good dish." It's a relief to know that Kat Khao exists. read more
