The woman (owner) is tough and hilarious, the man is an incredibly over-qualified yoga instructor who really makes the yoga influence work with the boot camp atmosphere-- he's amazing! And they're a perfect balance. I've taken 2 other boot camps, and this is by far the one to recommend. Some boot camps have 30-50 people in them! SFC is VERY personal, and tailored to the specific needs of each class. The instructors actually know everyone's names, and individual's old injuries to work around. I've been to other boot camps (I won't name names.... SWLBC...) and the instructors DEFINITELY don't know your name, and everyone is expected to do EXACTLY the same thing, despite their levels of fitness. Plus, there are tons of class times to choose from. From 5:45 in the morning to 6PM. Try this boot camp!

The course is taught by two trainers, Jesse and Breanne. Both appeared to be very fit and in their mid-thirties. To provide some background, I am generally a fit person--hwp with a normal BMI. I run and do yoga frequently. But after a bout of couch potato lifestyle brought on by grad school depression I decided to take this course to get me back on track. Pros: 1) Very rigorous exercise routine: The classes are basically interval training and rigorous right away. You are tested on the first day for how many reps of burpies, squats, pushups and sit ups you can do and also running time is recorded. After this class ramps up fairly quickly. 2) Positive reinforcement: The trainers push you but are also very encouraging and positive. I liked that a lot. 3) Nutritional Advice from community: The class also includes an online component where other members post what they are eating. This was an interesting experience and also gave me pointers on what brands to shop for that are less processed. 3) Results: I lost 5 pounds. My legs and glutes were stronger. I also lowered my resting bpm. I was happy with these results. Cons: 1) Outdoor only classes: This was possibly the biggest deterrent for me. The classes can ONLY be held outdoors. If the weather gets really shitty there is no indoor option. Eventually by the end of the course I fell sick from running in the cold at 7AM three times a week. 2) Photos posted on social media without permission and spamming: The first day of class students are asked to add both the trainers on fb so you can be connected to a community and get nutritional advice. This was helpful but what I did not expect was that they would take pictures of us during exercise routines and post them on their fb page. I did not sign any release forms to permit this! Additionally the fb community was a tad too active. It is not curated AT ALL so I would receive 10+ notifications a day. Sometimes just inane comments. This got irksome very quickly. 3) Dubious nutritional advice: The trainers asked us to remove dairy, gluten and sugar from our diet completely. Being a scientist I am skeptical of any advice that is not accompanied with whether research has been done on the subject. I would have liked to know more scientific background of why they were recommending this diet. I am sure you would lose weight with an extremely restrictive diet but thats not a good long term plan. I am more in the camp of eating everything in moderation. 4) Unclear advice on footwear: When I started the class, one of the trainers commented several times on the minimal running shoes I was wearing (Merrell brand). I have worn minimal shoes and ran in them for a while with no issues. The comments were always somewhat negative but unclear. Finally I asked him what his opinion was on my shoes and if he recommends them. The response was again, unclear. He said something on the lines of "they are not for me". I found these interactions awkward and confusing. If you don't have expert advice to give then why comment on them in the first place.

Even though she's on the young side, the programs that she's created for me are just challenging enough that I am regaining some lost strength while avoiding the incapacitating soreness and/or injury that I've suffered at the hands of other PTs. I especially appreciate her focus on helping me maintain proper technique. Like I said, I'm in this to regain some lost strength, not to spend time on the disabled list! And, at the risk of repeating myself - Shea is a different kind of personal trainer. She has a rare gift for truly understanding the body and meeting each person where they are. So many group classes push the deepest posture, heaviest weight, or most resistance, often leaving people injured or feeling like they've failed if they can't keep up. Kristina does the opposite. She reminds you that your body gets the benefit when you give it what it actually needs that day and guess what? That usually does not mean doing 25 incorrect chaturangas in an hour-long class. This class will make your whole body shake with just a one-inch adjustment in your spine. You'll sweat without unnecessary pressure and learn how to move safely and intelligently. That being said, Power Lab is by far not only the best bootcamp I've experienced but also the best group fitness class I've taken. Everyday is different and the class goes by lightning fast. It seems like a person should should stumble upon Linda Hiller by some stroke of fate that has nothing to do with a website like yelp. Once there, perhaps a person realizes their good fortune because their body has been ravaged by the well-intentioned but inexperienced teachers at other yoga studios, maybe because they need an ongoing ego spanking, or maybe they just need a yoga teacher with years of experience, true depth of knowledge of the body, a lovely sense of humor and a giant benevolent Leonberger dog named Rosie who lounges in the studio and gazes serenely at them as they toil away at their practice. Linda crosses the line effortlessly back and forth between strict, alignment-oriented dominatrix, and sweet, compassionate co-conspirator on the path. She manages to be completely involved with her students, while at the same time healthily detached - clearly the result of years of attending to her own practice. Obviously her own practice has served her well, she knows intimately what she teaches for better and for worse - she has been through it all herself. And while she makes the poses look effortless, she lets you know where she comes from and where she's been, and that she is no different than you can be if you put in the time and effort. Her dedication to providing her students with an extremely challenging class experience that is accessible to all levels is unique. Bonus points for no major overt display or discussion of "spirituality", leaving a practitioner free to bring in his or her own ideas and feelings, bonus points for her husband David in class to heckle her when the going gets too tough, and bonus points for the community of regulars who inspire with their toughness and dedication. This might be the only yoga studio in Seattle that has managed to randomly pull off an all male class one Friday night. It's $20 per class for Linda's 1 1/2 hour classes which often end up going over by 15 minutes...there are no punch cards, no monthly unlimited specials, no deals. Now that most studios in Seattle charge 16 or $17 for a drop-in, and because it is such a small group that it feels like a semi-private, I would call it hands-down some of the best money I've ever spent. I have never been to any other teacher at Tulinda but Linda Hiller, and if you aren't available M, W, F nights from 5-6:30 and Sundays from noon-1:30, then I'm sorry, you'll have to find another fabulous yoga teacher. Good luck. They're out there, but teachers like this are not easy to find.
