I had voice feminization surgery (modified Wendler glottoplasty) with Dr. Yung on February 26th, 2025. My entire experience was stellar, from start to finish. I've dealt with surgeon offices before and can say that Dr. Yung's office was the best of the bunch as far as responsiveness and patience I had so many questions and I concerns about the process but the office staff answered all of them, carefully reading my emails and answering everything in an exceptionally timely matter. Dr. Yung herself had very good bedside manner. She listened to me, answered questions and, when I was about to go under for the surgery, she comforted me by telling me that I was safe. Further, when I was at my first follow-up, I cried from relief that everything was healing well and they turned off the lights and gave me a weighted blanket to help me calm down. The results are amazing. There's still a lot of work to be done but it's all on my side as far as being confident in using the voice that the surgery has made available to me. I've shared my results with other people who have given rave reviews and several of them are planning to consult with Dr. Yung as well. I will always recommend Dr. Yung and her staff. read more

I went to Katherine several years ago for voice feminization surgery. I've been struggling with my voice for years on end and I decided that I needed a medical intervention. First off they lie to you about how well it works and how much it costs. Katherine's fee is not the total price of the surgery which they do not reveal to you over the phone. Instead they reveal the price of the surgery a week before you get it. I hope you've got a few extra grand lying around that you didn't need! I don't even know where to start about how terrible this procedure has been for me but I'll start at the beginning. If this is a little hard to read it's because I'm writing it in a white hot rage about how, even years later, the surgery barely worked. When I got surgery they did a blood test and the aid dropped my vial on the ground. The pre-op room is just a lounger. I followed the directions perfectly. I was silent for a week. That was the easy part. The hard part was what happened after. I developed polyps on my vocal cords and couldn't talk. Katherine said that they would have to cut them off and started by giving me steroid injections in my vocal cords which made it hard for me to work because I couldn't talk very well for months after. The steroid injections consisted of painfully forcing a hose down my nose with a camera on it to give me injections. After two injections she said that it was "fine" and decided that she didn't need to remove the polyp after all. I still can't speak right. On top of that - the clumsy aids who dropped things, the hidden fees, the complications, etc. They also force you to purchase expensive and unnecessary "voice training." The "voice training" is terrible. If you're curious about what it consists of go to mcdonald's and buy a soda. Then put your straw in the soda and blow. Do a vocal glide (that means start low and go high) and do that a few times. Impressed? That's probably worth a few hundred dollars a session right? No. It's not. The voice therapist was vague about why I was doing the exercises and each one of the "lessons" is available online. The therapist would also waste a huge amount of time asking me questions that weren't relevant. Why am I paying someone to ask me "how I am" when I can't talk. After all the injections and the useless training. She told me that my voice was now "in the same range" as hers, which is clearly not true. When I check the frequency of my voice now it's maybe only 5hz higher than it was before. It's barely even noticeable. I asked her if she could do a revision and she told me that she could do it for another surgery fee. Sorry. I'm out of money. I thought she would get it right the first time, but I was wrong. I can't afford that. Screw me for thinking that she'd actually do what I paid her for. I lost the ability to yell and I still don't sound like a woman. I sound like a cigarette. I regret ever going to visit her. Now if someone stabs me on the train I won't even be able to scream. read more

I have had an intermittent and chronic cough for nearly 25 years. It had been coming more frequently and getting in the way of normal life because I was having coughing spasms constantly. I tried EVERYTHING - I've been to ENTs, allergists, respiratory specialists, acupuncturists and taken steroids, cough medicines, asthma inhalers, chinese herbs, nebulizers... nothing really worked. I also noticed my voice getting more gravelly and tired sounding as I got older. Someone recommended that I see Dr. Yung to see if she had any insights to offer, and I'm so glad I did! Dr. Yung identified that I was overusing my vocal muscles even though my vocal cords were fine. She suggested I start working with Kristen Bond, a voice therapist in her office, to learn to more optimally use my voice. Within a few sessions, I was not coughing anymore and learned the mechanics of how to use my voice without straining it. The tone of my voice is much better and rounder. When my cough returned after a cold, I quickly was able to remedy the chronic cough that followed by using my vocal tools more intentionally. Kristen is absolutely brilliant, a great teacher and I feel like she helped me unlock a whole world of vocal health I didn't even know existed. Working with Kristen truly changed my life - I know that sounds kind of dramatic but I was coughing constantly in meetings, at work, in every conversation I tried to have. She also works with singers who want to gain more power and resonance in their voice , people who speak in front of audiences, and regular people like me who just have a chronic cough that won't go away. read more

I saw Dr Yung for second opinion about my throat issue and all she can tell me I need a voice therapy. I complained about something in my throat , but she cannot diagnose my problem. I wasted my time seeing this doctor. I don't know why there is so many 5 star here on yelp, but not for me I give her 1 star or less. read more

I had positive experiences with Dr. Yung & Dr. Bond. Dr. Bond was awesome and super helpful as I worked to gain back my voice strength. However, I wish the office would have been more clear around billing as I would have made some different decisions if so- twice I made a single appointment with Dr. Bond but Dr. Yung came in to talk with me as well. Because I technically saw two different doctors (in one appointment), I was charged double my normal co-pay. Very frustrating and If I had known, would have made decisions differently. This hasn't been my experience at other health providers- if a doctor decides to bring in another doctor to chat with me I haven never been charged twice. read more

I came in today to see Dr Yung for throat clearing that other doctors had been unable to diagnosis or help with. She listened to me and was very compassionate and knowledgeable. She was able to quickly diagnosis me and give me treatment and get me set up for future appointments. She also took the time to educate me and understand all my options. I had a horrible year of long covid in 2022...I lost my voice for weeks. I sing regularly and teach on Zoom using my voice. I heard of Dr. Yung and went to see her.She used a special camera to see inside the throat, and the vocal folds had been damaged...she gave one short injection of a gel that "plumped up" the folds to where they had been prior to long covid. I have been able to sing with full resonance, and my speaking voice is strong and full when I teach.. Dr. Yung was warm, explained what she saw withthe camera, and was informative and positive and inspiring. I cannot say enough about her..wonderfdul all the way around. Her office staff are terrific as well. I was told that I would benefit greatly from a special kind of speech therapy, and happily there was another superb practitioner in the office named Kristen Bond. Kristen gave me exercises to do at home, and I do her 10 minute warm -ups daily..It works like a charm. i came to see dr Yung because my voice was changing, it was difficult and painful to speak- i spent a career talking as a trial lawyer. On the first consult after tests she diagnosed the problem and offered me a solution. The solution ,over a period of months, working with her, her speech therapist, and finally a minor surgery , was complete success: my voice is back to what it was as a young man. When my voice went downhill last summer, for many months I couldn't find any explanation. I was remaining chronically hoarse for no explicable reason. I had a great experience at San Francisco Voice and Swallowing with Dr. Yung, and especially with Wynde Vastine, my voice coach, for gender-affirming voice training. They were both very affirming of my gender and never misgendered me or made assumptions about what I wanted my voice to sound like. As a nonbinary trans person myself, it was a huge benefit to have a nonbinary voice trainer. I was there to make my voice deeper, but Mx. Vastine ended up helping me also smooth out my voice in a way I hadn't known was possible or that I wanted! My voice sounds so much better now, and I'm very happy with it. Insurance covered it, so it was just a copay, which was great. For what the appointments were like: It started with a consult with Dr. Yung and Mx. Vastine, which they were able to do over video. (I had the option to go in in person to have Dr. Yung measure my vocal folds, but decided not to due to Covid concerns.) I then started meeting with Mx. Vastine over video, at first weekly, then more spread out. It ended up being six appointments spread out over 12 weeks. The appointments were each a little under an hour. They would take me through some exercises and then give me exercises to do as daily homework. (These were all video appointments, but they did have me come in in person for one so we could do some jaw massages.) We agreed together when I had enough training to continue to do the exercises and maintain my voice on my own. Then I had a final appointment in person with Dr. Yung where she examined my vocal folds and measured the deepness of my voice, which was a very cool experience. (If I'd gone in in person at the beginning, they'd have been able to show me my before and after starting T, but it was still cool to see.) I was losing my voice... I was unable to sing at all. I always sounded hoarse. I went to see an ENT who referred me to Dr Yung. She ran some tests, recorded me and showed me how strained my throat was and that my vocal chords were not effectively closing. the first step was to have me do speech therapy for 3 months with Wend. The objective of the thereapy was to teach me to properly breath when I speak. This was a challenge, but with practice it became intuitive and I saw progress. Then Dr Yung injected a temporary filler to "fill out my vocal chords" so they functioned properly. This would only last 3 months, then allow us to assess the next step. 4 months later, I couldnt believe the change in my voice! She showed me a comparison from when I first was her. Night & Day. My voice was fuller, less strained and tired. The process can be a bit frustrating because you relearn how to speak more relaxed and comfortably. But the end result is amazing. I had a sore throat for months, most notably after talking all day at work, talking to my kids all evening and during this past year, straining to talk through N95 mask usage at work in a hospital. I am amazed and happy to share that visiting Dr Yung and Kristen Bond, as referred by my ENT, diagnosed and treated the root cause of the problem using a combination of scoping the throat to see the vocal cords and surrounding muscle tightness and voice therapy to address the efficiency of voice production and also to address the muscle tightness, breathing issues, and jaw issues that all plated roles in the dysfunction. Dr. Katherine Yung is the highest level ENT that you can hope to have help you. She came highly recommended by my own great ENT, Kambrige Hribar in Marin County. She referred me to Dr. Yung because of her incredible abilities and experience well beyond other ENT's experience. I had lost my voice because of a polyp/blood clot on my vocal cords. I was hoarse and could not sing. My voice was getting progressively worst, and Dr. Yung was able to remove the damaged area in her office with complete success! My own ENT (who is also highly experienced) told me that she would have had to perform a surgery and could not have been able to do what Dr. Yung did in the office! My voice returned after the three days of resting and I cannot praise the knowledge and professionalism of Dr. Yung. For many years, I had issues with my vocal cords, and Katherine Yung and her entire team helped me out in my seven-month journey toward solving my voice problems! It all started with Katherine Yung identifying a polyp on my vocal cord. After discussing with her, I quickly decided to move forward with surgery because it did not take me long to realize that she is a talented doctor. Most importantly, I could tell she cared about delivering the best care possible to me. I made a virtual appointment with the doctor and she included her speech pathologist on the call. I didn't need a speech pathologist since I have acid/bile reflux that is causing me to have a hoarse voice, but they scheduled me for that anyway. I asked beforehand for them to let me know what this would cost and they did not. This was the beginning of our COVID lockdown, so when the doctor said she'd like me to come in to her office to examine me, I declined at that time. It's a reasonable request but I was hoping she could help me under the circumstances. Instead she told me that I needed speech therapy and that I should do two more virtual appointments with them. She refused to admit that I have reflux/LPR, but was fine diagnosing me with muscle tension dysphonia, which isn't really my problem. When I asked how much that would cost they declined to tell me and said they didn't know. I then had to get another virtual appointment with a different ENT who was able to diagnose me correctly and had no problem giving me treatment advice that greatly helped my symptoms and directly addressed the hoarseness impacting my voice. With insurance I paid $169 for the speech pathologist and $75 for my in-network co-pay. For basically not helping me. read more

Doctor is one of the best in all of healthcare I have seen. She is humble yet confident and very information yet very caring. Her bedside manner is surprisingly delightful for a doctor let alone a surgeon! She goes for the approaches of least intervention to more intervention which is a good approach. She fixed big complications from a big name popular surgeon which gave me a hoarse weak, inconsistent, and bad voice. I was depressed. Katherine Yung eventually performed surgery after a series of steroid injections and my voice is wonderful. Dr. Yung - Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Dr. Yung saved my voice. Enough said (pun intended). After 2-3 months of hoarseness, my voice was weakening to a near whisper. I had turned to another ENT who misdiagnosed me as just having allergies and/or acid reflux. Uggh - I was feeling desperate. And my 2 crazy boys were loving life because I couldn't yell at them! But then my friend referred me to Dr. Yung, who in a matter of minutes was able to diagnose my issue (small polyp) leveraging her top-of-the-line equipment! She thoughtfully laid out options to treat my issue, and we ultimately decided on a non-surgical procedure that was minimally-invasive, reducing recovery time. I was seeing a doctor in the neighboring ENT practice for a vocal cord polyp for several months in a therapeutic capacity, but when it became clear surgery was required, I was referred to Dr. Yung. She's excellent! She and Chantelle (her MA) were extremely thorough in preparing me for the surgery, and the surgery itself was so quick and easy, it was almost unbelievable. With the help of Kristen Bond (Vocal Therapist, in the same office) my voice is back to normal, and I'm learning how to use it more efficiently at work and in general. I'm in Sales and I like to sing, so avoiding re-injury while I'm healing is key, and they're very realistic and understanding about the process. read more
