Tucking into a delicious piece of cake, cut from a beautiful creation (made by someone else) feels like such a slice of much-needed normalcy. If I can still have something like this just sitting on my kitchen counter, how bad can things be? I've followed Brown Egg Bakery on social media since it started, and I've had Allison's perfect confections at many a fundraiser or special event, because she's made giving back to our community such a staple of her business model. But (I'm ashamed to admit) this is the first time I've paid cold hard cash for one of her baked beauties. I'm pleased to announce, I'm now in a committed relationship with a bakery. For Easter, we had the option of adding a sour cream citrus bundt cake to our order from Kam's Kookery. It was absolutely perfect - flavorful, not too sweet, and you could see the tiny little lime zest throughout each bite. I wonder how many limes she had to zest to make these Easter cakes! The glaze/icing on top added just the right amount of sweetness. On Easter, I served it plain. Last night I served it with macerated strawberries and it seemed like a completely different dessert. Something about being able to eat a cake like this just makes you feel like today is a good day and tomorrow is going to be better.

Great place for weekend breakfast!…read more I went here with my breakfast group for our monthly meetup on a March Saturday morning. I am grateful to OKC food writer Greg Horton for mentioning La Baguette as a good breakfast spot in a piece that I read recently. Our server recommended the crepes as a standout breakfast item, and they delivered. My companions ordered the crepes normandie, while I ordered the crepes parisienne. What a delight! I hesitate to order some breakfast items because I prefer mildly sweet things. I like pancakes and French toast with just a drizzle of syrup, and I only need a thin layer of jelly on my toast. This strawberry crepe was delicious! They put strawberries and whipped cream inside a crepe, folded it over a few times, and then mounded some more strawberries and whipped cream on top. No other toppings needed! I tried the crepe by itself and was delighted to find that it had a mild taste. The strawberries were surprisingly ripe for March. Kudos to them for finding a great supplier of late winter/early spring strawberries! Also, the whipped cream tasted great mixed in with my hot tea. Definitely need to come back for more breakfasts!

The servers were quite attentive and patient. The food was pretty good. I was impressed with the pecan crusted Brie. Vegetarian options are limited, unfortunately.
