Worst customer service I have ever had at a coffee shop. Rude woman works there. Any question I had was met with attitude. When they were out of half their menu, I decided not to eat there and just sit with my husband who ordered a coffee. She came to our table to lecture us on why we had said we were getting a sandwich then changed our minds. Blamed us for starting to make sandwiches we never officially ordered or payed for (my husband is allergic to pork, and they were out of alternatives so we decided against it). I like to support local business, but i walk into Katie's Cup and there's no "Hello" or "how can we help you" even though there's no other customers at the counter. Just as well since the table i sit at is so wobbly i couldn't set down a drink and certainly couldn't work at it. As the coffee order is delivered to the person i am meeting, the waitress again does not say a word. Maybe they just don't want to wake the only othe people in there, one sleeping at a table and another on the couch. read more

We were in Rockford to attend a wedding and came across Katie's Cup after doing a quick search for a place to grab a coffee and small eats in downtown. I have heard from others that parts of Rockford can be shady so I was a little weary of how the neighborhood was going to be but I was pleasantly surprised both at the location and the quality of food & drinks at Katie's Cup. Here are my ratings based on different criteria: Quality of food: Good. For food we tried a quiche, veggie platter, and a turkey sandwich. The quiche was tasty but a little small for $4. The veggie platter had fresh veggies and hummus. The turkey sandwich was made just right with mayo. For drink we tried their seasonal drink called "The Spooky Mocha" which is described as a pumpkin spice with a chocolate twist. It tasted just like hot chocolate with pumpkin spice mixed it...pretty tasty but a wee bit high on the sugar. Another drink we tried was the cherry pie chai latte that tasted just like a liquefied cherry pie. Again, it was pretty good but after a few sips it tasted extremely sweet. Decor: Kinda cool. The coolest thing about this place was the glass cutouts that look at the basement. Also, the live music was excellent. They had two gals playing and singing some very good and relaxing tunes. It just added to the ambiance of fall like weather. Cleanliness: No complaints. All the tables and floor were kept clean and crumbs free! Service: Friendly. The staff was always smiling and ready to help if needed. Speed of food preparation: Fast. My quiche just needed reheating and took just about 2 minutes. The coffee drinks were made fast and served at just the right temp. Price: Cheap. The quiche was just $4, the veggie tray was around $7 and our drinks costed around $4 each. If you're feeling like spending your Sunday morning in a relaxed atmosphere while listening to some really good music then checkout Katie's Cup. This is the ideal coffee shop in Rockford. They have a large coffee and tea menu but not overwhelming. They also have a good selection of food items including soups, salads, and sandwiches. We arrived at 2pm and most of the pastries/cookies were done. The have a variety of vegetarian options for a snack or even lunch. The Mumbi chai, which is a loose leaf, that we had with honey and milk was awesome. The atmosphere is relaxed with multiple tables, a sofa, and a fireplace. They also have shelves and shelves of books and games. Internet is also free, kinda slow but works. What we loved most is the service. The guys behind the counter were friendly and even knowledgeable about the teas. They just had a great attitude and just give off the fun coffees hop vibe. My friend and her fiance' had their laid back, very casual wedding shower here on a Sunday. The place is wonderful, very spacious, clean bathroom, ample free parking in front of the establishment. I cannot speak on the food because it was catered by the bride to be's family and future in laws. I came by here on a Friday evening, and I'm hooked! This is a local, independent coffee house that does a reasonably priced, tasty cup. What really jazzed me, though, is the book section in the back! Their motto is "Coffee, Conversation, Community," and this was evident in their selection of literature. There were a lot of books about community building, identity, values, and race. There was also a section devoted to environmentalism, and another on "good Summer reads" which included an eclectic variety of fiction and non-fiction which looked great. AND, they have a "lightly used" section of books, so you can buy a practically new book (presumably donated by customers) for $2! Pretty cool :) Anyways, back to the coffee: they have all the standard options (I only got my favorite, vanilla cafe latte), priced $2-5. The baristas were friendly and chatty, and happy to recommend a particular flavor to my friend. Really nice and spacious inside, this is the perfect kind of place to get your coffee and sit for a while. They offer a pretty wide range of drinks, and they also have lunch menu, though it is fairly small. The prices are comparable to most upscale coffee shops, and the service is fairly quick, though I was not there during a time that was particularly busy, so I don't know what it's like during "rush" times. From what I had heard of Seventh Street, the last thing I expected to find was a delightful little coffee shop. Katie's Cup had a lovely selection of tasty coffee beverages with a nice comfy-cozy atmosphere. Lots of places to sit and read or play board games (of which they had a handful to choose from). Apparently this place is the greenest in Rockford - using the most recycled materials than any other building. They also have a huge room set aside for private events. Quite lovely. read more

This place is a true gem in the 7th Street area and Rockford in general! BY FAR THE BEST/COOLEST coffee bar in Rockford!!! I stop by whenever I'm in town for lunch, laptop time, or hanging with friends and family. I love the high quality food and pastries (super yummy lunch specials!), friendly and quick service, spacious and relaxed atmosphere, "green" philosophies (from what I know it's the greenest building in Rockford), cleanliness, and their dedication to community. As a self-affirmed coffee snob from Oakland, CA (the home of Blue Bottle, Sightglass, and Four Barrel), I enthusiastically approve of the tasty coffee they get from Javamania (locally roasted). Every time I come in there are a few full tables with people hanging out chatting, playing cards, or studying. You don't feel rushed or cramped here. Decent coffee shop. The coffee was really good. It's not a very cozy or comfortable place. It reminds me more of a restaurant and not a coffee shop. If it's trying to be a restaurant it's doing a POOR job. I went in there in the morning and they really don't have much for breakfast food. I liked this place but unfortunately have a bad customer service experience to share. I paid a deposit to reserve a room for a baby shower and was told they would send the contract to me in a couple days. In the mean time I found out the day does not work and called the morning after booking to let them know. I left a message for them to call me back. I later received the contract via emailand replied that the date does not work and that I left a message and would like a refund of my deposit. No one has returned my calls or email and my deposit has not been paid back. I do not recommend this place and their poor customer service and regard for their patrons. read more

My biggest complaint about this place is that they rarely seem to be open when I wanted to stop by (usually early evening). When they're open, though, they're my new go-to when I'm in Rockford. This really is as good as it gets for a coffee shop in Rockford. They are friendly, knowledgeable, have great coffee, and have a really awesome physical space. There are several different table types, a sofa, and soft chairs. They also have a free book exchange, and many books to purchase. It is the most environmentally friendly place I've visited in Rockford, right down to the biodegradable coffee lids. Since adding a min-bakery, they now have a lot more pastry options. I appreciate that they have a religious background of some sort, but have a very all-inclusive feel, with books about healing, world cultures, humor, and environmentalism. It's like a much more genuine, non country club version of Meg's. If I lived closer I'd be a weekly regular. read more

The place may be a restaurant or a sandwich shop, but it is not a coffee shop, at least not a real one. The staff use the "coffee shop" label while casting aside the aspects of coffee shop culture that not benefit the bottom line on a daily basis. For instance, people go to coffee shops to work or study for hours. As such, they buy coffee. That's what you buy in a coffee shop. The customers may bring a sandwich from home since they could be there for a few hours. In fact, some coffee shops even sport a microwave in the customer area, and customers are free to use it to heat up lunch from home. Well, at Katie's Cup, bringing your own food is not allowed even though the place is supposedly a coffee shop. I don't know what is worse--a management trying to have it both ways (using the coffee shop label and yet disregarding the immediate downsides that come with coffee shop culture) or just plain being greedy. In any case, no authentic coffee shop would admit Katie's Cup in. Even by Rockford's standards, the place is backward, over-controlling and petty. I can't think of any atmosphere more at odds with these qualities than a coffee shop, and yet Katie's Cup feels free to partake in the label.
