    Matcha Latte
    Steve A.

Good small cafe among the better places in Rockford for coffee. It has a limited menu, which is not surprise because space is limited. Meg's Daily Grind is a local business with a few locations, including this one on Alpine Road. Building honestly looks like it may have been a bank. This is mostly just coffee and tea, along with a few pastries. Breakfast time of course is the busiest. It has a drive thru, which kind of helps the inside lines. They actually aren't usually that busy, but it's just because they're kind of slow getting orders out. It's about $5 for the speciality coffees. The Matcha Latte is one of the favorites. A great choice for those wanting a soothing drink. The only food they usually have are a few pastries, so you need to go elsewhere for a meal. Considering everything, it's good if coming for only a coffee. It also has matcha tea if wanting something else. The food options are lacking and they're often out of things totally.

This place is really good. They have good food and good drinks and a cool atmosphere. Only downfall is they refuse to clean their walls and windows. I mean they literally have mf charlottes web in the corner of this place. Other than that shit fire.

Best coffee shop in town. Always fresh, and friendly service. I make it a habit to go at least once a week.

Ridiculous pricing on very small sized drinks. I'll go to DD in the future and get a larger size at a much smaller price.

Amazing and consistent service and quality of food. The ladies at the drive up off of Perryville are the best.

The matcha was smooth and not too earthy, and the pistachio flavor added just the right amount of sweetness without tasting artificial. The café itself has a nice atmosphere and felt like a great place to sit and catch up with a friend or get some work done. Everything looked clean and well put together, and the staff was friendly when taking my order. I appreciate when coffee shops offer unique drinks that are different from the usual menu, and this one definitely stood out. I'll be back to try some of their other specialty drinks next time I'm in the area. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something a little different from the big chain coffee shops.

I usually ask for a shot of dark chocolate syrup to make it a chocolate chai, so I did for this occasion. The barista made as requested, however, she did give me a heads up that their chai is unique and might not go well with chocolate. She did offer to remake it without the chocolate if I didn't like it. I do taste the difference, but was fine with it as is. If we stop in here again, I will try it without the chocolate because I want to experience the full chai flavor. Jim was going to order their Mufawar specialty coffee, but got sidetracked by the seasonal offerings. He had the salted brown butter latte instead. We both enjoyed our order and would return here again. I like their location too. Easy in and out.

Power down, robot…read more While driving to Wisconsin, I needed some caffeine and was quickly approaching Rockford. I decided to see if there were any cool local coffeehouses to drop in and get my usual americano and Velvet Robot won me over with the unique name. Knowing nothing else about the place, I set GPS and took a detour for caffeine. I headed in and went straight to the counter. The barista was chilling out on a couch and watching a movie since no one else was in there. We made some odd small talk while I ordered my usual americano. That's when things got weird. He asked if I wanted steamed milk in mine despite me ordering it just black. He seemed confused as I was telling him that they are usually just water and espresso shots. As he was putting my drink together, I noticed he used the handwashing faucet to add the water to my drink. I thought that was really really odd and if not a bit unsettling. Surely they have an actual tap for adding water to drinks? After my drink was made, I went on the hunt for the bathroom. The building that houses Velvet Robot is massive. It almost feels like a mall or a convention center. It was seriously a 1.5-2 minute walk to the bathroom and along the way, it was wide open spaces filled with a church and some offices. As for Velvet Robot itself, it honestly feels like the kind of coffeehouse I would've designed in my early teens. It had cool aesthetics, there was a small arcade corner, stickers adorned the coffee counter, and skateboards with sick art along the walls. I really dug the feel and vibe of the interior. Sadly, when I got to my car and started sipping on my americano, I knew this robot fizzled out. The americano tasted like it was made with drip coffee instead of espresso. Which is weird since I saw the barista make my drink. On top of that, having to explain to the barista what and how to make an americano was a head-scratcher for me. So, while I loved the aesthetics and vibe of Velvet Robot, the disappointment in ordering and taste of my drink has me leaving one of the lowest scores I've ever given to a coffeehouse. Definitely a 5/5 for vibe but 1/5 for coffee and ordering. Maybe if the future allows me to revisit Velvet Robot again, I would gladly give it another shot (no pun intended). But, I don't see myself trying it again until I've had a few of the other places in Rockford first.

Because it's in a hotel, you have a lot of people with not a lot of other good coffee options stopping in. They took orders at a decent pace, but they're on small coffee shop speed, not chain coffee /go go go speed. I think it took over 20 minutes for them to get to my drink after I ordered. For me, that was fine. I'd already had breakfast and was packed, wasn't in a rush to leave. But there were plenty of others that thought they could just pop in, not realizing that the 20 other people already there were not in fact just hanging out but were also waiting on their coffee. So main negative would be the speed. The coffee was a bit pricy for the size, but it wasn't that much worse than you'd expect at a hotel. The quality, however, was excellent. I wouldn't make a special trip for this, but it is a good option if you're in the area and not in a rush.
