I LOVE Katsubo!! I don't know what I was expecting, but I got the matcha Oreo swirl drink at 70% sweetness and it was just MM MM MM perfect! Not too sweet, the matcha was just the right amount of bitter, and loved the texture of the oreo. The drinks here have a tendency to be too sweet, so I would definitely recommend turning down the sweetness level of your drink if you're sensitive to lots of sugar like me! Their best drinks are definitely their matcha drinks, in my opinion. The place itself is very cute, as a take-out location! They even have a small tray of stickers for you to pick one from if you order! There are no tables inside, only a couple benches. There's are so many boba shops in the Fullerton/Buena Park area but this shopping area has been needing one for the longest time and I was glad to finally see one! The interior is so clean and their display wall looked amazing on top of their decor. However, it's really tight and no breathing room. There is an ordering station to the left as soon as you walk in and apparently you can scan a QR code on the other paying station for the menu. We didn't get informed this when we walked in but the girl working the front told the other guests as soon as they came in so we opted out to just look at the menu on the ordering kiosk instead. The menu on the wall changes every so often and they just have the drink names so it's just there for the aesthetic quality. We ordered the following: The Shogun, 75% sweet w/ Honey Boba: You got me at triple shot of espresso, however, the whole drink tasted burnt. I tasted no matcha milk tea which was supposed to be one of the stars of the drink. The honey boba was decent, nothing to rave about. I like my drinks less sweet but the burnt flavor really ruined it for me. (1/5) Strawberry Kiwi w/ Lychee Jelly: My gf loved her drink and I think it was a solid choice for someone who likes their drinks sweet. You can barely taste the tea because of all the fruit bits and syrup they add to the drink. It does have a strong tangy flavor so a good balance for most. Solid new drink place in the Amerige Heights area! The interior of the store itself is pretty small with no seating inside or outside. You place your order yourself at a kiosk which was very straightforward and easy to use. I ended up ordering the Achi Green Tea Crumble (50% sweet) & the Ronin Matcha (75% sweet). On the menu they recommend 100% but I personally think that would be way too sweet. As reference, I typically get my drinks with 25% sweetness at other drink places like Omomo & Orobae. 75% at Katsubo was way too sweet for me and 50% was still a bit sweet for me so I'd maybe even try going down to 25% next time. Achi Green Tea Crumble was my preferred drink out of the two. The Oreo complimented the blended matcha and crème brûlée cream perfectly and was just a cup of deliciousness. As I said above, it definitely was on the sweet side even at 50% and I would categorize this more as a full on dessert rather than a light refreshing drink to sip on. Ronin Matcha was similar to the Achi green tea crumble but instead of Oreo it had strawberries. It feels a bit more refreshing with the fruit but the 75% sweetness was just too overwhelming for me and I just did not enjoy it as much. Overall I'd come back again if I were in the area to give their fruit teas a try but I'd stick to getting my blended matcha / fruit drinks at Omomo. read more

It's been exciting to see new, local businesses beginning to pop up more. One of these new spots ii discovered is Katsubo Tea in the Amerige Heights Shopping Center. This tea shop is a compact sized store situated a couple of doors down from the Albertsons. Decor: The store itself is pretty small. On the right, there is a bright, wall-length TV screen which cycles through their menu and some random animations. A "forest" of bamboo poles decorates the ceiling. The back is a display wall which has the Katsubo sign along with the biggest attention-grabber of the store - a suit of samurai armor. The left is the front counter/pick-up area. The aesthetic is a mix between a minimalist, modern styling and a "samurai" movie feel. One, random, small thing that got my attention was actually the pick-up counter. Their pick-up counter has, for some reason, an odd, metal, tic-tac-toe grid which is where they place your orders within. They mark the pick-up area with a bright, LED sign. Overall, I think the looks of this place is pretty fantastic. Drink (4/5): I ordered their Ronin Matcha ($5.75), which is an ice blended drink of matcha tea, cream brûlée pudding, and strawberry purée. The pleasant bitterness of the matcha tea gets sweetened by the pudding and strawberry mix. The drink portion is quite generous and it is housed in a sturdy, thick, plastic cup. I didn't even know that there was a boba place around this plaza. It's next to the Albertsons and was walkable from the other stores. It wasn't busy when we arrived on Sunday around 6:00 PM and you can order with the barista or order by yourself on the kiosk. We got a Thai tea creme and a taro with honey boba for each. With the substituted milk, our total was around $14.00 The store itself is pretty hip - there's a screen that takes up the whole wall that changes from a moving dragon to the actual menu. It's kinda hard to choose unless you are at the kiosk as I don't remember seeing any other menu. The options were plentiful, and it seemed like it'd be really good! However, when we got our drinks - I don't know if I loved it. The taro; had chunks of taro which was nice because it felt real but it wasn't a lot of flavor. The boba itself didn't have any sweetness. I thought I would be upset that I wasn't able to change the sweetness on the drink but I can't imagine what a 50% drink would taste like as this was pretty non-sweet (even for my standards) I guess I was expecting that purple tea that is found at every boba shop. The Thai: My sister actually thought this was too sweet. I had a taste and thought it was good but the grass is always greener. The drink itself looked really cool and aesthetic. Katsubo Sugar with 75% sweetness and less ice - 7.5/10 this drink was still a bit too sweet but the Katsubo boba (mix of small and large boba) added an interesting textural sensation to the drink Ronin Matcha with 50% sweetness - 9/10 this blended drink was still a bit sweet even with the adjustment but the matcha taste was fresh and the bits of strawberry were amazing. The first time I came here was with my boyfriend after we had some dinner in the area. The inside of this tea shop is really cool with a big menu on the wall. After a few months from the grand opening of Katsubo, I decided to come back on two occasions to retry their drinks. The boba shop is really hidden if you're driving down Malvern. It is located in the same plaza as The Albertsons. Parking is plentiful at all times. The interior has been completed with a gigantic wall to wall menu board with photos. They kept it clean and simple as there is no indoor seating. The ordering tablets make it simple and contactless. You can pay directly with your card or in cash with the cashier. I stopped here on different days and each time my drinks were ready in a few minutes. The have an lots of options: milk or fruit teas, signature beverages, brown sugar boba milk series, cheese teas, traditional teas, and café varieties. There are over 20 different toppings such as boba, small boba, egg pudding, tiramisu foam, creme brulee, taro paste, tri color chocolate beans and many more. I have to say they have definitely stepped on their game. I have tried the Ceylon Milk Tea with small boba. This black tea was quite tasty with the house milk. The milk did not overpower the tea flower. My current fave! I was not big on the Hokkaido Milk Tea which was bland. You can customize with milk substitutes: oat, almond or the house milk.
