I really like this place and their take on classic Japanese dishes. My two favorite are their Unagi Fried Rice and Chicken Yaki Udon. For the Unagi Fried Rice, it isn't too crazy but I really like the addition of onions and of course the unagi. The onions add a nice crunchy texture and the natural saltiness of the unagi removes the need for excessive soy sauce. As for the Chicken Yaki Udon, it's udon without the soup and I think for a quick meal, that's honestly preferable. The chicken is cooked well and there's cabbage, which pairs great. Of course, it's very savory. Overall, I think this place is relatively well priced and good for quick Japanese food. I would recommend staying away from their ramen as I didn't have a great experience when I tried it. But their fried rice and udon options are good! read more

They served me "California rolls" with just crab meat inside, without avocado. I looked through their Yelp photos posted by customers, and every California roll included avocado. I asked them why mine didn't include avocado and they said they "ran out". I'm just wondering how they run a whole day without avocado, when most of their menu requires avocado, such as their sushi and poke bowls. For its price, I think the sushi is relatively good. It's not the best sushi place, but definitely a nice spot if you're too lazy to make some dinner or if you're having some late night cravings. This place was actually one of the first places I ever ate at asian ghetto as an incoming freshman. What really attracted me was the bento box. The bento box provided sushi, teriyaki chicken, soup, and dumplings, what more can you ask for? The sushi was california rolls (that were at room temperature which was a bit weird), soup was miso, and regular fried dumplings. It is hard to imagine messing up a simple meal like this. Given the amount they gave at that price, its an alluring option for people who like to eat a lot. However, the sushi rolls are a bit pricy, and as a broke ass college student I never ordered those so I can not comment on those. If you ever find sushi/ sashimi here that's worth the price, let me know and I'll try it sometime. read more

This is my FIRST yelp review even though I'm always lurking here for the best spots! I am a food connisseur - self-proclaimed and agreeable by those who know me. I moved here last year for college (go bears!) and honestly I've probably tried over 12 restaurants around Berkeley. I promise I have a balanced diet, so no need to worry about my health. Good place for some good cheap food. I've come to this place consistently for affordable sushi. They make a wide variety of sushi that is pretty good (albeit not the best) but very worth the price. I also love their bento box; I think it's the most economical item on their menu. I recently tried their new Udon and it was pretty good. My boyfriend and I ordered togo yesterday. There was only lady at the restaurant. When we arrived, there was a guy waiting for his orders. She was wearing mask and latex gloves; which is a must during COVID. She took our orders after she finished the previous order. She keyed our orders in the register with the hand wearing gloves which I think is complete fine and I appreciate that. My boyfriend paid cash and she returned the changes. I was keeping my social distance and standing near the entry door. The problem was she continued preparing our food without changing the gloves that she handled money, and cash register. It's completely gross. The Katsumi sushi I ordered came out totally different from the picture they posted. Instead of unagi topping she put salmon and no unagi sauce instead she sprinkled sesame seeds. If the ingredients were out of stock, she could have told us. I didn't know it until we arrived back home at Hercules. It was very disappointing experience and I will never visit again. read more

Got their bento box special today! The food portion was relatively worth it for the price, but the taste was just very average. They did have good California rolls though. The bento came with 4 California rolls, 4 fried dumplings, a salad, soup, and chicken teriyaki with rice. The chicken teriyaki? Which should have been the main star of the meal was actually my least favourite because the chicken was slightly tough and the teriyaki flavours were NOT soaked into the chicken AT ALL, making it bad. The actually teriyaki sauce tasted fine with the rice but if you wanted to mix the two, there definitely is not enough sauce for the rice given. The fried dumplings and the California rolls were both pretty good, as well as the salad. The miso soup had strangely a lot of tofu and seaweed inside of it which is is fine I guess. Recently came here for dinner. The restaurant doesn't seem to be one of the more popular ones in Asian Ghetto, and it wasn't crowded on a Friday night. Overall, I liked the restaurant, although there were certain things that could be improved. The restaurant gives off a slightly "unprofessional" vibe. I can't really pinpoint what it is; the cashiers seem aloof, and I noticed people walking in/out of the kitchen area frequently. Then again, this is in Asian Ghetto, and I've seen much worse. I do have to commend them on the quick service; we had our food within five minutes of ordering it. As for the food, they give a good-sized portion for the price. The combo comes with a small salad and a few pieces of sushi. They also give you a lot of rice and meat; my chicken teriyaki was definitely enough for dinner. It doesn't taste too bad, but it's mostly Americanized Asian food. I would also recommend the Unagi (eel). They give a lot of eel, and in my opinion, it tastes a lot better than chicken. It is a bit pricier though, so if you order the eel, it would probably run you something like $10-11. I won't be reviewing the sushi, as I haven't tried enough to give it an accurate rating. (Look out for a future update!) Good experience overall. Even though it's not a stellar restaurant, they serve good food, and it doesn't seem to suffer from long lines (yet -- I suspect this may change in the future). I'll probably be coming back in the future, and I'm excited to see how Katsumi will grow. read more

I found mold in one of my California rolls; the entire piece looked like it had gone bad, and the staff was quick to deny anything was wrong. In visits prior, I enjoyed their fried rice, but that experience was enough to deter me. It was negligence and unsanitary practices combined. This is not high-end sushi, but it's much better quality than many other sushi restaurants in town. The fish is fresh, the prices are decent and, most importantly, the sushi is delicious. Maybe some of their rolls are a little on the expensive side (especially considering most of their clientele are students), but they also have some great specials that are easier on your wallet - and they've got a lot of reasonably priced options on their non-sushi menu, too. It's tiny, but clean and bright, and the staff are super friendly and actually want you to enjoy yourself in their restaurant. I've already been a bunch of times, and I'll be coming back again. I stopped by here with some friends at Berkeley when I was visiting them. I wanted to try out something at the Asian ghetto, and this was one of the few places that was open at a southerly odd time (5 pm on a Sunday). The place is pretty small, and there are 2-3 tables plus raised seating for a total capacity of maybe 10 people. The staff seemed a little indifferent, but were deferent enough. I ordered the Bento box because I wasn't sure what I wanted to order, and the box had a little bit of everything - salad, gyoza, teriyaki chicken, California rolls, miso soup and rice. My friends do not suffer from decision paralysis, so they got the chicken katsu and crab and avocado sushi rolls. The restaurant is self service and the food was available quickly enough. I did not come in here expecting anything authentic, but I wasn't displeased by anything in my box. The 'salad' was really just lettuce smothered with some thousand island dressing. My teriyaki chicken was a-okay but I experienced instant regret when I took a bite of my friend's crispy, juicy katsu chicken. I really liked the veggie gyoza, which were cooked perfectly and weren't stingy on the filing. This was my first time eating sushi, so I can't judge how good it was, but dipping it in a concoction of soy sauce and wasabi made it exponentially better. At $7.95 for the box, quantity definitely won over quality. I was pleased to see that none of the food was greasy or heavy! Bland as hell curry sauce. Does not deserve to be labeled as curry. The meat itself was fried ok, but I ordered curry Tonkatsu not Tonkatsu with watery powder. Also was eating and workers slapped a sushi mat on top of the counter and it splashed something on my food. I ordered two rolls, the Samurai and Cherry Blossom, and one was GOD AWFUL.The Samurai was really good and the fish seemed and tasted fresh, but the Cherry Blossom was just god awful; I honestly think that they made the roll in advance (maybe they messed up an order or something) and gave it to me cold and dry. The rice was colder and harder than the rice in the Samurai roll and god was the tuna on top dry, cold, and pasty - it was the worst roll of sushi I had ever eaten. If indeed they gave me a leftover roll, then I would be seriously disappointed, but either way even if they did not I don't plan on revisiting any time soon. read more

The three people behind the counter made it seem like I was bothering them when I ordered and asked a simple question about a combo plate. The cashier proceeded to talk about me after ordering.
