    Chicken Teriyaki Rice Special
    Cyn K.

Overview: Quick, easy Japanese food, open late ---- Bento Box Special ($14.25): - Comes with chicken teriyaki, 4 pieces of California roll, 4 pieces of gyoza, salad, rice, and miso soup - Salad was a few pieces of iceberg lettuce with an orange slice - Standard flavors, not bad, nothing stand out - Miso soup has good flavor ---- Other notes: - Outside seating available - Kiosk ordering - Service was fairly fast - Ambiance wasn't that great at night, pretty lighting but a quite few homeless people around asking for food and money - Inside a plaza with other food businesses ---- Overall: This is the place you want some quick Japanese food or a late night meal, nothing special nor bad, but nothing outstanding. I recommend eating inside or at home, especially at night

For the price, I really can't complain about Katsumi Sushi. I paid $10.75 for a Philadelphia roll (salmon, avocado, and cream cheese) which is a steal considering it's location and fare. Typically, I see Phillie rolls go for 13 and above in Berkeley, so it's a nice change of pace to see something below that price caliber. Do note that their Phillie roll has a scant amount of salmon accompanied by huge globs of cream cheese, so I imagine this is how they keep their rolls so affordable. From what I could tell by the meager portion of salmon, the quality of the raw fish is actually pretty fresh-not overly fishy or slimy. The rolls are pretty decent, though don't expect a generous portion of raw fish with your rolls. The quality's just a notch above Safeway sushi which is by no means a compliment. But, again, you're not coming to this restaurant for its outstanding merit or luxury. This is made known by the lack of interior decor with its only decoration being its humble sign outside the establishment. Katsumi Sushi is truly a no-frills sushi establishment that does cheap sushi. granted, it does it quite well.

Needed a quick meal that would fill me up so decided to try the Bento Box special from Katsumi Sushi. Ordered over Snackpass and everything was ready within 5 minutes, which was convenient and quite surprising considering the amount of things they include. The Bento Box Special comes with rice, salad, miso soup, 4 california roll pieces, chicken teriyaki, and 4 gyozas. The teriyaki chicken, was a little on the smaller side in terms of portion but still grilled well and maintained their juices. The california rolls were not really special and weren't super great in quality. Gyozas were fried to perfection and were quite good. If you want a fast meal that will fill you up, definitely get the Bento Box Special. The quality isn't anything out of this world but the meal gets the job done. Will come back to try some of their sushi rolls. Hopefully they are really good.

Solid spot for nearby students in the Berkeley area. I love Katsumi for their affordable options, as well as being able to go to them late in the night as they are open fairly late compared to nearby restaurants. While the food itself may not necessarily be the most traditional Japanese food, nor of any Nobu-esque quality, you get what you pay for, and a great value at that. For about $10-12 I can get a full bento box that leaves me full and satisfied. Their poke is also solid, and priced at a great point. Most of all, Katsumi punches well above their weight in terms of hospitality and service, and I have never been let down on this end from them. Highly recommend if you are looking for a casual bite of Japanese comfort food near the UC Berkeley campus area.

This place is the comfort food place of all comfort food places. Whenever I'm feeling sad or need a pick-me-up, I know that Katsumi will never disappoint. I always order either the California Roll or the Crunch California (fried CR with unagi sauce) and it's always delicious. It comes with ginger and wasabi, and the uncle working there is so nice. He's always friendly, smiles, and had the food out in a heartbeat. While you can't eat inside (it's in Asian Ghetto), there's ample space outside. If you go to Berkeley and haven't been here you have to becuase it's by far the BEST sushi spot at Berkeley :)

Small portion but the food was okay. There are so many better places around so I don't recommend this place.

First time at this place. We did not plan to eat sushi but since a lot places did not offer dine-in, we decided to try this place. We ordered 3 sushi rolls, salmon teriyaki and udon. The wait time was not long and most important, all the sushi we ordered were so delicious. The owner and staffs are friendly. I will come back to try other sushi.

    Oregon Roll

Ordered on Snackpass ahead of time and about 10-15 mins later my sushi was ready for pick up. It was just what I wanted and needed to fill me up so yeah I'd come back again and grab take out here! I got the Oregon roll, which was simple but fantastic.!

Honestly the food here is very mediocre, but if you ever need quantity, this is the place to get it. I ordered the bento box special, which is less than $8 before tax. The quantity of food you get for that amount of money in Berkeley is amazing. It's not just a lunch special, you can get it for dinner too! It comes with rice, chicken teriyaki, 4 California roll pieces, salad, gyoza, miso soup, and an orange slice. Everything tasted pretty standard, but the miso soup was one of the worst I've ever had-- very bland. Taste wise, I'd give this place a 3, but having this amazing bento box deal bumps it up to a 4. The food comes out pretty quick too, if you're ever in need of a fast meal.

Standouts were garlic edamame, 6pc omakase, beef tongue, pork belly, negitoro maki, corn tempura, & sweet potato creme brulee. Edamame was lightly charred and salted well, with generous amount of garlic flavor. Omakase was fresh and tasty, although a tiny bit small so definitely perhaps get your own instead of sharing one order between two. Beef tongue was hands down the best thing. I thought it was a boneless short rib with how tender it was (can break apart with chopsticks). The pork belly was also soft and went well with the spicy miso. Negitoro was fresh and the wasabi was grated very well. Corn tempura was perfectly fried and very crispy while still being soft inside. Lastly, the creme brulee was a great dessert. You do get a hint of the sweet potato. Would love to return to try other dishes!

Delicious sukiyaki, chicken skewers, cold tofu, salmon rolls, hamachi sashimi, Ikura and uni, tuna and Ikura nigiri, and hamachi Kama (not sure why they charge $21 and then $7 for a large when it is two small dollars that came out though). Decent wine selection - Chardonnay was good. Restaurant itself is fairly loud, especially with a baby that kept crying. But it might have been crying because it was loud. Owners should consider the Constellation System by Meyer Sound to make the dining experience more enjoyable for patrons. As this is a longtime bastion of Japanese food in the Bay, they should really invest in the sound portion of their restaurant. Prices have gone up since the last time I was here but it's not totally unreasonable. Good quality food and service. Love this place.

I could eat 2 of these with a bowl of rice and it would be a hearty meal! + Chicken karaage was solid--crispy, good portion, and a nice appetizer.
