Snow Cheese Balls $8.95
Barron Cedric T.

Ever so close to a perfect experience, if not only for an isolated circumstance that happened during our time eating there. I love the concept of this Japanese fusion restaurant. They have fun, interestingly crafted meals. Two of which we had ordered are the Carbonara Udon $17.50 and the Brick Cheese Katsu $22.90. The meals are not only cool and exciting, but the taste of the food can also properly back up the gimmick. The Carbonara Udon has creamy carbonara sauce and comes with 2 tempura pieces. For the Brick Cheese Katsu, I ordered the Gold & Silver Katsu to be able to sample both the Cheddar cheese wrapped inside the pork loin (Gold Katsu), as well as the Mozzarella cheese which is the Silver Katsu. It is a great combination of hot, fried food with a cheesy, creamy filling. Service was honestly a mixed bag. On many occasions, we found ourselves having trouble getting the waiters' attention because the staff are situated at the far back of the narrow restaurant. It was a good thing thay the staff are very courteous. They attended to and took care of an isolated request we had during the time we were there. The menu may be a bit more pricey compared to other similar establishments. Almost all of the meals start off at the $20 range.

I've been here on and off throughout the years and the katsu is still very delicious, consistent, and same portions. This location is probably one of the least crowded for dine-in, with most of the traffic going to takeout orders. The whole front of restaurant is serviced by 1 worker, who takes orders, delivers dine-in and takeout orders, and does the cash register. The dine-in service is a bit slower, but not bad since they make katsu fresh. Note that they only allow for 1 refill of rice.

Run, don't walk to Katsuya. They serve almost exclusively kastudon. But, they have perfected the art of the modest chicken/pork cutlet. Now, this location is not as good as the downtown location next to Toronto Metropolitan University. But still, it's most delicious. Here are some of the dishes we ordered: Honeycomb Katsu - Humble katsudon criss-crossed with Korean sweet & sour sauce, mustard, and mayonnaise. As tasty as it is visually pleasing! Brick Cheese Katsu (gold & silver) - Katsu pork rolled over Mozzarella/Cheddar cheese. Meaty and cheesy and delicious and striking looking. Chicken Karaage - Humble fried chicken. Some of the best fried chicken in the city. Rivals any Korean fried chicken. I do have a couple of complaints. First, the (complimentary) appetizer seafood broth was not good, with unpleasant scent (I hate to be blunt... but I'd compare it to the scent of wet dog... lol) . They definitely have to replace it with a simple miso soup. Second, the place could be cleaned a little better. The upkeep was not great. But other than those two complaints, this place is a gem, and you need to check it out.

We stumbled upon a different Katsuya during our trip in Toronto and decided our last meal before leaving had to be Katsuya again (this time in York). Once again we loved the food and would totally visit again. This Katsuya is also across the road from Yorkdale Mall which is a huge boujee shopping mall If you're ever in Toronto, go to a Katsuya.

Carbonara Udon

Katsuya is one of my favourite places to grab some delicious pork katsu!! They have so many variations of katsu which makes it so hard to choose. What I ordered: 1) Carbonara Udon: this dish was so creamy and rich. It includes their special carbonara sauce, shrimp and bacon. Topped with tempura and shredded purple cabbage. They also have the katsu version of this if you want to give it a try! 2) Pork Katsu Original: my personal favourite out of all the katsu's they have! The sauce they use is super yummy, flavourful and creamy. The pork itself was so tender and crispy. 3) Cheese Crabmeat Croquette: my fav appetizer to order here. It is packed with crabmeat, mashed potato and cheese that is dipped tartar sauce!! Get it you wont regret it :) PROMOTIONS: 10% off dine in & take out - CASH ONLY

Classic Japanese katsu

I've been to several of the other Katsuya locations in town and I would say that this one is comparable in quality and service. Located in a slightly run down plaza off the highway entrance, the outside is not as nice as other locations but the inside is comfortingly familiar. A plus is that they have parking, albeit small and can be quickly filled with cars. I had the classic katsu that is served simply with rice, cabbage, katsu sauce and some sesame to grind up yourself. The katsu itself is thick enough to provide a good bite, but thin enough that the crunchy batter brings another dimension of texture. Glad to see that the Katsuya franchise is consistent across locations!

Dropped by around lunch time and it was great to see Katsuya's consistency in maintaining COVID precautions (screening, contact tracing, social distancing, sanitizer at each table). We were told to pick any seat we wanted and sat down. I ordered the Japanese pork loin katsu which has Worcestershire sauce mixed with various vegetables and fruits. I wanted to change things up because I usually get the terri mayo katsu at Katsuya and since having it at Mr. Tonkatsu, I wanted to taste the OG! However, I wasn't the biggest fan of this specific set. The sauce was good but not amazing. The overall dish wasn't as hot as I would have liked it to be so I relied on the hot miso soup to help. I feel this is because the air conditioner in the store was pretty strong so it cooled the food down faster and that's okay. The katsu itself was crispy and pretty good. The sides were great as usual and I love the unlimited refills, especially for the miso soup which is super flavourful. If I return, I will definitely try another katsu set. Service was straightforward. We also saw a team member slapping the dough for the bread they use to make panko breadcrumbs! I didn't even know they made panko especially not in house. Bonus!

Garlic chilli fish katsu

Katsuya was awesome! It's a cozy spot near Yorkdale. I've been EE tried before because I always assumed katsu was only pork based, but they have an amazing HADDOCK fish katsu!!! Oh man was it amazing. The batter was fresh and tasty, the fish was cooked perfectly and the garlic on top was nice and crispy. It's served with rice and some veggies. Service was also speedy and friendly! I will definitely be back to have this amazing fish again!

Pork loin katsu

Came here for their grand opening take-out special. It was 50% off for any pork loin set except for carbonara and red carbonara sauce. We ordered the garlic chili and japanese curry pork loin katsu set. Their service was polite and fast. We only waited for approximately 15 mins to get our food. Even with the 50% off, they certainly did not skimp out on any components. There were about 8 pieces of pork loin and it wasn't soggy despite eating it 2 hours later. The breading was thin and the pork loin wasn't dry. The garlic chilli sauce had a nice spicy kick to it and was tangy. They included deep fried garlic slices. The Japanese curry was very typical, but I do like the shreds of onions in it. I am a person who doesn't eat too much rice, so the portion (~1 cup of cooked rice) was perfect for me. However for people who like their carbs, they might find the rice portion to be a bit small. I really appreciate that they kept the sauces and all components of the set separate to prevent the katsu from being soggy. They even punch a small hole in the lid so condensation does not build up.

There are quite a few Katsuya restaurants in and around Toronto. I have been to a couple of the them and this one is my favourite! It's a small shop in a strip mall. There is limited parking outside and I believe you can't park on the street since it's busy outside. We got super lucky that we were able to find a spot right outside the restaurant. The inside is pretty cozy. The area where they make their bread (which becomes the breadcrumbs for the katsu) makes up what I would describe as their bar area on the side of the restaurant. You can watch the employees making it which is pretty cool. You also get to see all the perfect bread buns in the making! When the machine is going, it is kind of loud but just adds to the atmosphere of the restaurant. There are bathrooms here but they are down a set of stairs that are pretty narrow. If you have mobility issues this could be an issue. All of the staff here are really welcoming. They have a bulletin board at the front of the restaurant that has the pictures and names of all the staff. We were told we could sit anywhere in the restaurant. When we dined in they did have dividers between all the booths which was great. The menu pretty much has every combination of katsu meat (or vegetarian alternative) in sauce of choice (their OG sauce, Japanese sauce, a white sauce, etc), and with or without toppings. I highly suggest anything with cheese! Maybe not the first thing that you think of for a katsu but it's so good. The portion sizes here are ginormous. Bring your appetite. Most of the meals come with a normal sized rice bowl helping of white rice, a cabbage slaw, and a garnish of ginger and pickled radish. I was having lunch with one other person with a reasonable appetite and we had enough leftover for another portion of lunch. Make sure you're hungry when you arrive!

Delicious food and friendly service. It's a large chain restaurant but good quality. They bake fresh bread every day for their panko. Unfortunately they got my order wrong. I ordered pork and was charged for chicken.

There's no reservation system but they do have a waitlist on Yelp which gets you in line (highly recommended). First to know is you can't pay with credit card here--there's an ATM in the front of the restaurant. As far as the restaurant goes, it was fantastic from start to finish. Our table of 4 was seated and serviced by 1 main staff member, Lydia, who talked us through the whole menu and ordering system, recommended some great starts and then kept us frequently updated all throughout dinner. She checked up on us along with her assistants who were also bringing items and servicing the table. The food quality was excellent with juicy and flavorful cuts of beef along with the shrimp, pork, veggies, side dishes/ponchon, and rice--it kept coming consistently. Grill changes were frequent as well. The atmosphere is lively and there are a lot of servers so you aren't trying get someone's attention all the time. But it doesn't feel too cramped at the same time. As it is AYCE, everyone in our group left full of course and enjoyed each course. I liked the almond tofu at the end! ----TL;DR---- Pros: great selection of meats, quality was top notch, huge portions of course as it is AYCE, service was prompt and all staff were really friendly. Cons: no reservations so need to be on a waitlist. The no credit card system is a bit of an inconvenience. Bottom Line: we loved it--definitely would go back again and enjoy more of their selections! You have to try them if you like meat and AYCE!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

We got a bunch of dishes to share and overall liked most things but some things (like the oyster) unfortunately didn't hit as well. Wagyu - thin slices but very tender and very flavorful with the cheese - surprised by how well the flavor combo worked out. Tofu - easily one of my fave agedashi tofu. Huge tofu slices with very chewy outer texture, a bit gelatinous . Really went well with the sauce and toppings Carbonara - nice chewy texture to the udon, not too soft and not too firm. The sauce was nice and creamy. Not as truffley as I thought it would be, wish it was a little more but it was still pretty good Oyster - least favorite of all the dishes we got today. It was a bit sour and the cheese felt like it didn't really help the flavor profile of the oysters. It was super oily from the cheese, felt like it was drowning in cheese/oil flavor Cod - it looks good but something is lacking, maybe in taste? Feel like maybe the marinade did not penetrate enough. The texture is still nice and soft , with a crisp skin . Also was a bit too oily for our liking, compared to other miso cod we have had. It was also a relatively smaller piece of cod. Overall, the appetizers were really good! The oyster and cod were a bit disappointing. Would come back for the carbonara and the other appetizers mentioned though!
