Had a random craving for Japanese fried pork cutlet and where else than Katsuya! Had the Cheese Katsu, which is pork loin stuffed with Mozzerella cheese. The batter was light and crispy, and the mozerella was perfectly stringy. I asked for the "original sauce" on the side instead of ontop as I prefer to dip it to keep it crispy. The house sauce is made with "over 5 seasonal fruits, 10 vegetables, and 6 organic herbs" and was really flavorful with a hint of sweetness. However I did feel the accompaniments were a bit weak. For example, the shredded cabbage barely had any sauce on it, and the 2 slices of pickled radish weren't enough. But the cutlet itself is worth a try though! Not only are the portions massive, but the katsu meats are super delicious and the meal is really affordable, making it a top choice restaurant for the Ryerson students nearby and anyone looking for a filling meal at a great value. Environment: The restaurant is only about a 5-minute walk from Eaton centre, which makes it really accessible to visitors. The restaurant itself tends to be really busy due to how popular it is with the students, so it is recommended to come earlier to avoid the lunch and dinner rush. The tables are quite small and since it is a casual dining place, it is recommended to come in a group of 4 or fewer to optimize getting a table right away. Food: Katsuya is known for their katsu dishes, which are deep-fried large slices of meat, for which they have options such as pork, chicken, and fish. There also have a few options of sauces available including their original sauce, curry, teriyaki, alfredo, and spicy sauce. My group ordered original, curry, and teriyaki pork loin katsu and we got to try each other's dishes. I personally liked the curry and teriyaki sauces more because they are more flavourful than the original sauce. The pork loin katsu was really juicy and tender and I liked it that it's fried crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They also offer complementary miso soup and salad for any katsu order and those can be refilled along with the rice and coleslaw. You're basically guaranteed to be full while dining here! Bonus: check in on Yelp and get a can of pop for free! Service: Service was a bit slow due to the issue of under-staffing, as all the tables occupied but there were only 2 servers. The servers were quite nice and fulfilled all of our requests, but it was a bit difficult to flag them down. I had a similar dish at Mr.Tonkatsu on Yonge St and wanted to compare the two. Here, they serve lemon water where the acidity helps to combat the rich taste of the katsu. If you order their katsus, hey give you a cylindrical 'mortar' type of tool to grind the sesame seeds, put half of it into the sauce on the side, and then dip your katsu into that final mixture. If you find that the cabbage is a bit bland, be sure to use the salad dressing (found on the table) and drizzle a generous amount. Like Mr. Tonkatsu, Katsuya also has unlimited refills for miso soup, rice, and sliced cabbage salad. After eating at so many korean and japanese places, I can say that Katsuya takes the place for the best tasting miso soup. It was especially satisfying on a rainy day. When the katsu arrived at my table, I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish all that in one sitting. It was 2x the size of my left palm. Wasn't sure if they always had the large portions but I guess it was consistent because other reviews says the same. BUT don't be like me and take it to go because the prime time to eat it is at the restaurant...The meat went soggy after a few hours :( #regrets I still can't get over how fluffy the breaded crust was. Usually with the breading the meat inside gets tougher, but not at Katsuya. The breaded exterior was deep-fried to perfection. For once, it didn't put a strain on my teeth to bite off a piece. The pork tender on the inside honestly stayed true to its name - tender, and its juiciness was retained within the fluffy breading. The cheese stayed consistent throughout the katsu, and was had the melty and gooey texture spread alongside the crust and meat. Food: The miso soup here seemed like a skimped version, there was no tofu in it. The cabbage slaw was nice and fresh, and you can choose how much dressing to add. Rice looked smaller than the other location I've been to, but the katsu was more generous and the sauce was rich and creamy - so much that I had to pack it home! I highly recommend Katsuya if you are looking for a tasty katsu meal, with a bunch of fun sauce options to keep things interesting! I'm a huge garlic lover and the fried garlic with the sauce had me making unnatural noises. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Each tonkatsu dish comes with a bowl of miso soup, radishes, rice, and some coleslaw(?) salad. The miso soup doesn't taste watery at all, and the best part is - the miso soup is refillable!! I've talked about Katusya before, and I still love it! The meat is tender, the portions are huge, and they have so many different flavours to try. I've mainly tried this one and the red carbonara since I like spicy food, and I have to say Spicy Garlic is my favourite. The toasted garlic is so fragrant, and the sauce is spicy without being overpowering. I honestly wish they sold the sauce in a bottle because it is THAT good ALSO THE CHEESE CRAB CROQUETTES ARE AMAZING! A must try item for sure. Melted cheese, crabmeat, and potatoes, what more can you ask for the dip also goes really well with the croquette! The dip reminds me of cream of tartar but less tangy and a bit sweet. I'm not able to go to Katsuya as often as I'd like since it's far from me, so I actually ordered two portions - one to eat immediately and one to freeze for later. Reheated is as good as freshly made, as long as you pop them in the oven for long enough so that the cheese can melt and warm evenly. Rarely to I get excited by katsu, but Katsuya really delivered a memorable dish! I came for a weekday lunch with my work team and everyone was delightfully surprised and enjoyed a great meal. The main staple of the menu is the katsu (a breaded thin piece of pork or chicken) but Katsuya takes it to the next level. The katsu can be stuffed with cheese, come in a burger or with noodles. The traditional rice option comes with a wide selection of sauces, from creamy carbonara to spicy tomato-garlic to sweet curry. I went traditional and had the Original Japanese Katsu. The katsu was done perfectly, crunchy on the outside while the meat was still moist and juicy. I appreciated the attention to detail in this dish. The katsu rests on a metal grate so it didn't get soggy through the meal. There is a little mortar and pestle to grind up the sesame seeds for the soft white rice. The little pile of cabbage cuts through the grease as you make your way through the meal. Also the portion size here is big! More than enough for lunch and a delicious snack later on. The menu is just so vast. I took a solid amount of time to choose between the endless varieties of katsu. Furthermore, with each "flavour" of katsu, there were different customizations on the type of katsu (e.g. pork loin, chicken, cheese, fish, etc). At long last, I settled on the sweet chili katsu... with CHEESE. My friend go the pork loin curry katsu, but this review will specifically cover the dish I ordered. On the side, we ordered some takoyaki. I must say, the sweet chili sauce on top of the katsu was simply a perfect combination. I loved the sweet tanginess that the sauce offered while adding just the right amount of heat. They also added some aromatic garlic chips on top, which really makes the katsu so tasty. You absolutely need to have cheese in this dish. The cheese is melty and stretchy, giving the katsu a whole other level of texture. The dish comes with salad which they have a bottle of dressing for you to drizzle on, and as for the miso soup and rice, this is UNLIMITED. Service here was really friendly. Their food tastes the same consistently, their service is always on point and they have recently changed their complimentary soup to udon which is just delicious! I have tried almost all the chicken Katsus they have and every flavour is so unique and rich. Second time here and disappointed to say service was just as consistent...ly terrible, though the food is great. There were a total of 3 tables including us, one of which who sat down and ordered much later than us but received their food well before we did. From the moment we sat down to when it came time for the bill, there were multiple occasions where I had to leave my seat and head to the counter to get the server's attention. Even then it was like they were purposely avoiding eye contact. At one point, I was standing above the counter waiting for the the server, who was crouched down on her phone. I had ordered the cheese loin and my friend who cannot have red meat due to dietary restrictions, ordered chicken. The server repeated the correct order back to us but when paying for our order, both items were "loin". After pointing this out the server just stood awkwardly and stared at me, mustered "sorry quietly" and walked away. The rice portion was so tiny (significantly smaller than I recall from last time), though I just discovered through reading others' reviews that there is unlimited rice, salad, and soup- not that it was ever disclosed to us by the service staff. They were both perfectly cooked and delicious! The classic katsu sauce on the original katsu was amazing. The interior is nicely designed. Their tables and chairs are wooden. They incorporated a brick outline of the entrance to the hallway leading to the outside. They also have hanging lights, which added to the ambience of the place. I really love katsu and I grew up eating it as a kid, usually chicken katsu with regular tonkatsu sauce or with curry, but since moving away from home there aren't many options for good katsu. Coming to Toronto for a weekend trip with friends, definitely had a plan to get my fill of Japanese food and this restaurant caught our eye. We came for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was pretty slow once we came in at 2pm, but started filling up later around 3-4pm. The menu was pretty extensive with so many types of katsu (pork loin, pork tender, chicken, fish, and cheese) and a lot of different types of sauces (original Katsuya, traditional Japanese, carbonara, sweet chili, garlic chili, curry, hot spicy, and terri mayo). There were so many types of different combinations of katsu and sauce that it was a bit overwhelming! They also had katsu burgers which ended up being really large and delicious. Each katsu set is served with miso soup, rice, cabbage, and the katsu (which is a very large portion). You can get unlimited refills on the miso soup, rice and cabbage which is awesome! Food: Traditional Japanese Pork Tender Katsu - I ended up ordering the traditional tonkatsu served with tonkatsu sauce and sesame seeds that you grind with a mortar and pestle. I wanted to go old-school and got exactly what I wanted. The classic tonkatsu sauce was perfect and the tonkatsu itself was so big and perfectly crispy and crunchy. Katsu Cheese Burger - One of my friends got the katsu cheese burger (cheese inside the tonkatsu that oozes out when you bite it) and she was having the time of her life eating that enormous but delicious looking burger. The tonkatsu was so big and basically falling out of the burger the whole time. The sauces in the burger reminded me of okonomiyaki sauces. I took a bite and it was pretty damn good and definitely worth the $12. Server was really good and very friendly/funny! Our food came out pretty quickly and everyone was so full by the end of it because the portions are so large. It was very high quality of tonkatsu and even though I think the asian fusion options are kind of strange, I think they are good as well and people seem to like them. read more

The first bite was very flavourful and indeed was very very good. The only thing I would like to mention is about this sauce. They said that this sauce is made with 5 seasonal fruits, 10 veggies, and 6 organic herbs. It definitely tasted like that, in fact, it was very complex. It was just like a pack of multiple fragrant flavours. However, after 4 or 5 cutlets, I felt like the flavour of the sauce started to become a little bit heavy and disturbing. The sauce itself was very good, but maybe this sauce is not meant to be with Tonkatsu. They also offer some different types of sauces so I shall come back to try something different! read more

Super super delicious. The Katsu could have been the length of my forearm. I ordered the curry one and my friend ordered the sweet sauce with cheese and sweet potato. We shared both but one order might have even been enough. They are served with miso soup, cabbage salad, yellow pickled veggie, and rice. The crunch of the breading did not go soggy under the weight of the sauces. I thought the breading was perfect with the sauce as to have that texture but not so hard that it's sandpaper against you mouth. The curry isn't spicy at all and the sweet one was light on the sweetness. Both were pork and it was about half and inch thick of very juice meat. The cheese and sweet potato stuff one was oozing with goodness. I was full half way through the meal but really couldn't stop eating. I came here at 4pm and there was no one here. I ordered the terri mayo pork loin katsu and crab meat croquette. I did not expect the katsu to be so big. I am a big eater but I could not finish both of this and my sister could not either. Service was exceptional as the server kept coming to our table to check up on us, I counted 4 times to be exact. Recently tried the garlic spicy pork loin katsu and with one minor error, I was surprised with a huge serving of dried garlic which felt like it overpowered the entire dish. The sauce itself was deliciously spicy. The pork loin pieces were perfect. Would I order this again? Probably not. You get unlimited refills on rice and miso soup. came here after my sister's friend recommended it and we came right when it opened. crazy how busy this place gets and they only had one server. the part that sucks is that there's no wifi here and they primarily have phone menus so we had to ask for a physical copy. the croquettes were delicious! highly recommend. the seafood katsu don't recommend at all - very fishy to the point that i couldn't eat it - the other katsus were really good though and the spice level isn't bad at all. bedsides the poor girl working all alone (so the service sucked) & the one dish, the food here is really good and i definitely think people should come check this place out for some good katsu! read more
