I've been a student in Katt's class since I began acting almost 3 years ago. The more time I spend working in entertainment, the more I realize teachers like Katt are RARE. All I can say is that Katt Shea has given me my life back. Katt is an incredible acting teacher! I was nervous before my first private Skype session but she immediately put me at ease as we started working on our scene. I have had my share of poor experiences with bad teachers. I have had people ramble on for the whole hour, then charge me $100. I have had people critique me in negative ways that didn't help but only made things worse. I have had people talk about themselves, what awesome teachers they are or how once they shook hands with Al Pacino (I don't care about Al Pacino right now, it is MY lesson, focus on me). Katt is a complete opposite of that. Each lesson is focused on my needs, goals, what I need to work on. Katt is very professional, always on time and never wastes a minute. The lesson is an hour long and we work for every minute. This is just how a professional teacher should be. More importantly, Katt teaches you LEGIT exercises that help you get out of your head and allow your HEART to do the scene. I have had teachers tell me "I'm moving my mouth too much", "not enough" and other such nonsense. Katt's philosophy is if you get out of your head, your heart will FEEL how to do the scene so you won't need to be told how to move your head or any such ridiculous things. As evidenced by my progress (I have a video track record thanks to Katt), she was absolutely right. Her exercises are deceptively simple, pointed and seem kind of crazy at first but once you're done and you do another take, the results are nothing short of transformational. As we have worked through the last few months, these habits have become deeper and deeper ingrained in me and I am so much more connected to my true self in every situation (acting or otherwise) and SO out of my head. What I love the most is that Katt doesn't tell you (like other teachers) to "get out of your head". Easier said, then done, right? Well, Katt doesn't tell you that, she has you do the exercises and you get out of your head on your own, without her criticizing you or telling you. This is a mark of a TRUE teacher. Telling me to get out of my head doesn't help me but doing Katt's exercises helped me get out of my head BIG TIME and in many ways I believe the changes that came as a result of our sessions are permanent. Also, Katt is a genuinely nice person who believes in building people up instead of tearing them down. It's a very positive, constructive environment. Furthermore, she never TELLS you what to do but allows you to DISCOVER how YOU would do things. One of the most memorable things she told me was to trust MYSELF more than I trust anyone, even her. I think such attitude is exactly what makes one an artist rather than doing it "correctly" or becoming dependent on teacher's approval. In short, Katt is the real deal. Genuine, professional and most of all her techniques work like nothing else I have tried so far. It really is as close to magic as I've ever encountered. I feel lucky to have gotten a chance to work with her. If you want to get out of your head and become a better actor, there is no better teacher.
