This theater in Beverly Hills represents Hollywood at its best. It's the property of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is the location for the wonderful public screenings of movies as well as lectures which are sponsored by the Academy for a low cost ($6 or $3): get tickets here http://www.oscars.org/events I've been fortunate enough to attend several events here over the years, the most recent being a showing on the big screen of Fresas y Chocolate, the only Cuban movie ever nominated for a foreign language Oscar. This event also featured live Cuban music before the screening and a question and answer period afterward featuring the female star of the movie, Cuban actress Mirtha Ibarra. A huge shout-out to Yelper Garrison S. for telling me about these events. Such a unique, special opportunity! Free parking nearby. Cute programs and memorabilia. Opportunities to learn more about the art of film. What's not to love?

One of the most elegant and beautiful film and event theaters in Los Angeles, and most Angelinos don't know about it why? Because it's at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences offices. When you walk up the steps and the mirrored walls, you feel as if you are going somewhere special. Walk through the theater doors and you are engulfed by majestic red velvet seats with matching stage. The theater holds about 1000 people and the stage in front of the screen is flanked by two large Oscar statues. They show new and historic films here, but also have other film nerd worthy things like cast and director panel discussions and they could even hold awards presentations here if needed since they do have a sound mixing station in the room. The floor is immaculate, thanks to there being no popcorn or soda stands to soil it up. For most that come here, snacks are not required because they come for the love of film. I was here for a discussion with acclaimed Hong Kong movie director Wong Kar Wai. I probably could remove the Hong Kong from the title because his movie messages are universal. I was pretty much fan boying the whole time, given that he's my favorite living movie director, he usually does not talk much about his films after making them and he's where? In LA! Matt Weiner (Mad Men creator) and John Powers (NPR Film Critic) were able to peel back the curtain on some of Wong's mystique. They showed clips of some of his films with commentary and then Q&A with Wong afterwards. How do you score a ticket? For most events, it's only $5!!! One of the best deals in all of Los Angeles. If you are a member of the Academy, then it will only set you back $3. If you are coming, leave all the extra stuff in your car, because they do check your bags and have you walk through a metal detector. Free parking is located down the street in two non adjoining lots. A film lovers paradise, I can't wait to come back!

The Academy Science and Technology Council proudly presents: Galactic Innovations: Star Wars and Rogue One. This was my second time back here and it was definitely a special treat! As much as I enjoy the Star Wars movies, I actually prefer the special effects and the behind-the-scenes work. The amount of ingenuity, talent, blood, sweat and tears it takes to make a movie come alive and have audiences wowed from their seats is the best part! Yelper Isobel L. and I were treated to a 2.5-hour event featuring: Two Starship Troopers escorted Academy President John Bailey down to the stage first to kick-off the event, so cool! Afterwards, the event began... Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). They are the creative, innovative, behind-the-scenes and special effects brainchild behind Star Wars (1977), wow! "This is a story of innovation, of risk-taking, of present limitations and future possibilities..." The special effects behind Star Wars is practically amazing and awe inspiring! Special effects artist John Dykstra was approached by Director George Lucas about his Star Wars vision. Lucas wanted to create a storyline of a power struggle between good and evil that was filled with amazing characters, spectacular settings and epics space battles. Thus, ILM was born! The team consisted of various artists and engineers, committed to delivering a near-impossible 365 visual effects shots in less than two years. The use of various special effects, especially, the use of motion-control film cameras (such as analog cameras and rigs) later on laid the groundwork for the all-digital toolsets used on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The event also featured special guest speakers, who all played distinguished roles on the Star Wars films. They shared their behind-the-scene stories, how they overcame challenges and how they drew inspiration from other practitioners and techniques. Side Note: Towards the end of the event, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Director Gareth Edwards was actually in house! Also, a mini replica of the Millennium Falcon and the camera rig was displayed in the lobby for guests to take pictures, cool! Overall, I enjoyed the event. It was educational and fantastic to learn about how these innovations and breakthrough in science and technology comes together as the motion picture technology continues to evolve and advance.

Such a beautiful theater! I've been here a handful of times over the years. A lot of academy events are held here, like the Oscar Shorts and Documentary screenings. They've had screenings of feature films with a panel of the filmmakers. It's just a wonderful place to go to if you're a film buff. There are no concessions as they want to keep the theater clean. The outside lobby is quite lovely with mirrored walls and comfy seating. A go to for a wide variety of screenings. Check out the calendar on the Academy's website for future events. Tickets are usually a steal (as cheap as $5) and parking is normally free at two nearby lots. (22/100)

My friend managed to buy tickets for a special screening of the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock film: To Catch a Thief, starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Turns out this screening was a double feature and also included the 1955 Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis film, Artists and Models. This screening took place in the screening room (theater) of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In other words, the people that do The Oscars. The building is very non-descript, no signage or indications at all you're at the right place. It / they have been here about 20 years and they completely remodeled & updated the lobby and theater about 2 years ago. As you enter the door and show your ticket, you are immediately subjected to a "TSA - like" security screening. - Empty your pockets into the tray... - Step through the metal detector... - If you don't pass, stand there with your arms up as they wave that wand all around you. I was surprised by this level of security and if I didn't know where I was, I'd swear I was at some airport. Apparently they feel it's necessary, so OK. Once past security, the lobby is fresh, clean and new, but very bland. No art, graphics or decorations any kind on the walls, only a couple easels in the middle of the room holding posters or something for current or upcoming films. We walk up the stairs toward the theater and are greeted by two 6 foot tall Oscars standing in the corners of the landing. Now I know I'm not at an airport. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/samuel-goldwyn-theater-beverly-hills?select=QwDBWhTflQKNoMPmF0uYsg We continue up the stairs and go into the bright red 1000 seat theater to find some seats. I see to two even larger Oscars, one standing on each side of the stage. Now I know I'm in a special theater, how cool is this! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/samuel-goldwyn-theater-beverly-hills?select=Ts_KrxuOuwCquLp57PecYQ They're showing movie industry stills from the mid-50's as people find their seats. How fun! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/samuel-goldwyn-theater-beverly-hills?select=oNjowC5O7drKKrFJkuek4Q When it's time for the movie to start, a man steps out to a podium to introduce the film. He spoke about the film, the fact it was filmed in "VistaVision", a high quality, wide screen format (1955 version of "HD" if you will) and even introduced an actress in the audience who was IN the film! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/samuel-goldwyn-theater-beverly-hills?select=z15NIMZ01pK2vCj8D443Iw After the introduction, the presentation begins and we're treated to a number of "VIstaVIsion" shorts before the film. I have to say, when the movie itself started, the image quality and clarity was simply amazing, it did NOT look 60 years old! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlncgNXoYxA OVERALL: A very fun experience to see a classic film in the theater "The Academy" uses for screenings for their members!

Such a beautiful venue. Attended the Beverly Hills installation ceremony for the new city council and mayor. It's amazing to the think of the likes of people that have walked in this theater. Beautifully decorated and seeing all of the oscar statutes is very cool. I'm in awe of this location and was thrilled to walk into its doors. There is ample parking in and around the theater and everyone that works there is super nice. What a thrill to be a part of this place.

The training and acting methods, the teachers, and the students all challenged me to grow as an actor in a safe and supportive environment. I highly recommend both Annie and Diane and their classes. Commercial Workshop with Annie: Even though the workshop is one day, Annie fills the day with such great advice and on-your-feet work. She gives great general audition tips and specific feedback to each person to help you grow. She helps to demystify the types of commercial auditions so you can focus less on "did I do it right" and more on having fun with the audition (which is why we do it!). Advanced Intensive with Diane: Diane is a gem. In a month, she was able to pull out such emotional depth in my performances. She is kind and nurturing in a way that is constructive without being judgmental or mean. You can tell Diane is a teacher for all the right reasons and really believes in all her students. Every student gets different notes and redirects, which also exposes the entire class to so many different tools to use when auditioning or preparing a scene at home. The students in the class also brought such a warmth and generosity to the class, which I think speaks volumes to the types of students that the studio attracts. After this class, I have a clear method for preparing for an audition and feel more confident in myself as an actor!

Before his class, it would take me an hour or 2 (yikes!!) to record a self-tape. After studying with Will, I can do it in a take or 2. Because in Will's class you only get one or 2 takes, this trains you to make bold choices from the jump. Will has truly helped me to live the life of the character in a truthful and honest way. I looked at my self-tapes from before I started versus now, and it's day and night. I also have a much easier time just being and trusting because I've lived the life of the character, and I know that the emotional core will show up. I love the material he chooses every week. It's always a scene I would never pick for myself that truly challenges me. Being in his class and going up every week has given me such confidence, conquering roles I would have never thought I could. The takes are all recorded, I get to watch my work and see where I'm growing with my own eyes! I know sometimes actors have trouble taking in compliments, but it's another thing to see your work. Will truly cares for his students and handles every student individually!!
