I've known Kathy now for many years... about 10. I first met her when she was shampooing hair at Lucy's Salon. At that time, I had been a weekly regular at Lucy's; and before that, a weekly customer at my two previous stylists, in Miami and in New York. Since 2000, I've gone to Dominican stylists because they know how to do any hair type very well. My hair was long and very healthy BECAUSE of their care. So when Kathy bought the salon from Lucy back in 2016 or 2017, I trusted that my hair would be well cared for. Things were fine until late 2017 when suddenly, the right front part of my hair started breaking for no apparent reason. I didn't understand it since I only ever got my hair relaxed, shampooed and conditioned at the stylists. I pin-curled it at home and never applied heat myself. It was a mystery. Kathy asked if I was on any medications that might have caused it. But I wasn't. I just assumed that I must have done something to it, and moved on. I continued to go to Kathy and my hair grew back. By 2019 it was long and healthy again. I was past the problem, or so I thought. Then in June 2020, when the shutdown initially lifted, I went for a relaxer and within days, my hair was breaking again... in the same pattern, but worse. Again Kathy asked if I was on medication causing it. I left and decided never to return to her shop. My hair was so over-processed. I have spent the last two years trying to restore it to health without success, as it has continued to break. I've had it trimmed so many times. And today, I have to simply cut it down to the new growth. I am frustrated and devastated as I've prided myself on maintaining healthy hair. Last summer I found out that Kathy has never been formally educated about the HEALTH of the hair. She may not understand the science of hair care, and is a bit careless with her application of chemicals. I felt the need to share my story as a warning to others. If you go to Kathy for a wash and set, you'll probably be ok. But be careful when it comes to chemicals. Make sure that Kathy or anyone else who is processing your hair knows what they're doing. Ask to see their state certification or license. At least then, you can assume that they've learned the basics; and there is accountability. Kathy, I'm sorry, but you really caused a problem for me. Do the right thing. Go to Cosmetology School and learn more about the care of the hair and the correct application of chemicals. read more

I was looking for a great Dominican salon I could go to since moving from jersey this year & it was not easy as the options were very limited unlike what I was use to in having a Dominican salon in every corner! I will say I'm so happy I did my research and decided to go see Katty. I'm in town visiting family for Thanksgiving, and everybody knows you have to get your hair done before visiting family for any holiday. I didn't have time before getting here, so I searched Yelp when I arrived for the nearest Dominican salon and Lucy's Salon was the closest to my location. The name was recently changed to Katty's Salon, which is the sign you'll see on arrival (and why my review is here). Katty was the only person working today, and she immediately greeted my mother and I while she was finishing with another customer. I was a walk-in customer, which she had no issue with, but she did mention that she wants to move to appointments to avoid long wait times, which is VERY common at Dominican salons. After waiting maybe 10 minutes, I was in the chair getting my hair washed. I got a standard wash and set. She was very friendly throughout the time I was there, and we talked about traveling, family, etc. After I was done under the dryer, she blow dried, trimmed, and flat ironed my hair. Total time at the salon was 2 hours, which is great! Final price was $65 ($55 for wash/set and $10 for the trim). That's a little bit more than I'm used to paying in the DC area or NJ, but not by too much. Overall I was happy with the experience and hospitality. I'd definitely recommend this salon to anyone locally who's looking for a good wash and set, especially if you don't want to travel all the way into downtown Houston. read more

I started going to Katty, after I got on Yelp. I'm an avid Yelper and I desperately wanted to find someone who did Dominican Blowouts because I had heard so many rave reviews (Globally). I found Katty's on Yelp and I haven't turned back since. I have recommended her salon to several friends. I'm also a Flight Attendant so trust me when I say it's hard to find someone who you look forward to getting your hair done by. She does take walk-ins but I generally make an appointment. Sometimes same day, and she is very accommodating! I never know when I'm gonna be in town but I love the atmosphere. I highly recommend this salon especially in you're Blowout Curious like I was. I don't think I could go to a traditional shop anymore. Also, she is very conscious of your time. Most times I'm out in 2hrs or less. Vanessa is a beast when she washes your scalp! Where do I even start?! This was one of the BEST experiences cutting my hair I've ever had. I haven't cut my hair in 4 years because I don't trust anyone! I decided to give this salon a try, and it was such a GREAT experience. Katty is a sweetheart and she has the most gentle hands!
