Great spot for a haircut! I'm still fairly new to Houston so I was looking for a place that would do a solid haircut and was very pleased. First off, they are apparently a long-standing salon but recently opened up with a new, sleek modern look. When I called to make the appointment, they were quick to answer and it was very easy to schedule. I went for a basic women's haircut which was $75. Lilian was friendly and clearly cared about doing a great job, listening to how I was wanting the hair to be cut. Going from longer hair to a shoulder length cut along with a shampoo and dry all took just under an hour. I am definitely interested in coming back! They're located on the second floor of a plaza with lots of parking, although it can be busy. read more

It was my first time here and I needed a simple trim and face framing layers. I expected a wash, cut and blowdry but the stylist started cutting my hair dry, which was fine. She asked if I wanted a blow dry and I said yes. She proceeded to blow dry my hair with no water, no heat protection, just on my dry brushed out hair. I just felt like she wanted to get it over with and not put in any extra time or effort. On top of that it was $75!!! I got my hair done with Anna last week. The consultation and booking process was great. Anna did a great job with my root perm and red balayage. However, the girl cannot cut in layers. I have been getting layers for years and this is the choppiest most random haircut that it looks like a kid cut it. I think she may do much better with straight cuts. My hair was also cut about an inch shorter than I ask so I will not be able to have someone fix my layers until a few months out. Several people have mentioned my strange chopped hair. I came here and got my hair done by Chloe and I really enjoyed my service from her. She really took the time to listen to my concerns and got closed to my hair goals. I have gone through so many different hair stylists over the years, and I just feel like they all disregard what you tell them, and end up doing what they want. She even color matched to my reference perfectly. She was so kind and considerate and the hospitality was amazing. The first time I came here was back in June/July of this year and I am really happy with my results. I first booked a consultation with Bao to talk about what I wanted to do with my hair since it was the first time that I was dying/bleaching my hair. He was very thorough, knowledgeable, and very nice! I even set up an appointment that same day to get my hair done. The earliest appointment was set for a month later which was completely fine with me. I definitely had time to prepare for the big change that was about to happen! I wanted a caramel balayage and Bao definitely delivered! I went in on my appointment day around 10am and the whole process took 6 hours! (I have a lot of hair) Bao was very thorough and I really appreciate his attention to detail. He took very good care of my hair and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. It's been a long time since I had my hair done at an Asian salon. I was excited because my friend had recommended it and I loved her hair when she came to the office. Called to make an appointment and got one a few days later. Tina was my hair stylist and she did an amazing job. She cut my hair and gave it layers, then she recommended I dye it since I was showing a lot of greys. (Hair color $106) I was initially concerned about it taking a long time and having to bleach it, but she said it would take about 45 minutes. I chose a subtle red that was only conspicuous in the light. The color came out beautiful and I have had many compliments. I feel so much more confident with my new hair cut and color. Definately made me feel rejuvenated. It is a little pricey if you dye and cut, but I felt it was worth it in the end. Just a reminder you can pay with cash or Zelle. I just got a digital perm done by Anna and I am so happy! I used to get digital perms regularly for 8 years before I had kids, in SF and Taiwan. It's been over a year since my last hair cut and with summer coming I wanted a shorter hairstyle. I found secret salon on yelp and their pictures of all the perms inspired me again. Went for a 5 min quick consultation with Anna to discuss my hair type and ideal treatment to get the look I wanted. She helped me decide on a natural wavy look with a digital perm. I have to say, this is one of the better digital perms I've gotten. Anna understood my hair and what a digital perm could do/should do for it. The day of was super easy, she made me comfortable with water, snacks, and wifi so I could do some work. She cut gorgeous layers into my hair (after the cut itself I would have been happy!). She also checked in often during the heating process to make sure it stayed comfortable and didn't get too hot on my ears or scalp. (Something that other stylists had neglected to do for my past perms). The whole process was around 3.5 hours total which is expected. It had been three years since my last haircut due to COVID, moving states, taking care of everyone before myself and then I got fed up with the state of my hair and wanted something new for the summer. I'm a SLC native, new to Houston, and had no friends or family to suggest hair stylists for me. After weeks of searching, I finally stumbled upon Bao's Instagram. I instantly fell in love with his work and knew I could trust him with taking care of my hair. During our 15 minute free consultation I showed him inspo pics and he was very transparent and honest about what it would take to do what I wanted. A $100 deposit was required to make an appointment that would go towards the final cost of the service on the day of. Fast forward a few weeks and the day was finally here. Before he did anything to my hair, he made sure that I understood the process and that he would do the best to achieve the look I was aiming for. First he cut my hair, then bleach, wash, color, dry, and style. His assistant, Chloe, was also very sweet and gentle while she helped him tackle the daunting task of managing my hair (I have tons of hair.. ) 6 hours later -- tada! I can confidently say that my hair has never looked prettier. The techniques they used made sure that the colors blended seamlessly and I am obsessed. Service: Incredible Price: Definitely on the higher end, $$$ but you seriously pay what you get for and it's worth every penny Background: I hadn't dyed my hair in over 4 years and was looking to make a change. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it and deal with the damage again (split ends on split ends when I last did it). As fate would have it, I kept on getting sponsored ads on Instagram for Bao (@hairby_secret_bao), with enough nudging I decided to book a consultation. Process: 1. Consultation: The consultation is quick, you might have to wait a bit if he's actively working on a client but it shouldn't be more than 30 min. He'll take a feel for your hair and ask you for your hair history and goals. I wasn't too sure what color I wanted really but I wanted to make sure that I had a real lived in look that would look good when it grows out (aka low maintenance). So I gave him a general idea and he told me what I could and couldn't do based on the inspo pics as well as the process to achieve what he was envisioning. 2. Deposit + Schedule: once Bao confirms that hair history and goals, you'll pay a $100 deposit that will go to your appointment and schedule a date for you to get your hair done. He'll give you an approximate cost for the services but just know that it's a baseline cost (could be more expensive depending on amount of products that end up being used). 3. Appointment: The day of my appointment, I checked in, they washed my hair and then I got a haircut. Once the haircut was finished, Bao goes into bleaching the hair to lift the color using a foil balayage technique. While the bleach was processing, Bao periodically checks on the lift to make sure it gets to a level that he's comfortable with based on your goals. For my particular style, I wanted lighter ends, so in the last hour of bleach lifting, I was sitting on the salon bowl as my ends got some extra processing time. Then once the bleach was done, Bao toned my hair and it was done. Overall process took about 8 hrs but it's good bc Bao normally only takes on complicated customer per day (aka a balayage or color correction) with some other toner/haircuts while you process your hair. Respect the hustle . 4: Follow-up toner: so he recommends that you go in every 4-6 weeks for a toning appointment to continue to keep the color well. These are short 1-1.5 hr appointments that are fuss free, sometimes you'll be working with Bao or his assistant Chloe but Bao comes up with the miracle toning formula either way. Hidden benefit: Bao will generally curl/wave my hair after your appointment, but will ask me first if I want it. There's no extra charge for this which I think is great bc last time I colored my hair, I was charged for this service unknowingly (different salon/stylist). Hair health: Honestly, my hair couldn't be any healthier. Even though I bleached my hair, I've had minimal split ends (I've seen less than 20 since I got the service done 8 months ago) and it's all about your hair maintenance at home as soon as you get the process done. Use good bond repairing (Olaplex or K18) and you'll have really healthy hair despite the chemical process. Overall, would highly recommend going for Bao. He's very candid and honest about what you can and cannot do with your hair and I really appreciate that. Definitely be cognizant of the wait times to have a good session with him though bc he generally books out about 1-3 months in advance depending on the season (like holidays get booked up quick). read more

You know how sometimes you just want a new look and your hair becomes the target of that change? Well that's me. After weeks of Instagram-stalking a bunch of Houston area colorists, I decided to message Bao for a consultation appointment. His IG account (hairby_secret_bao) was constantly being updated with gorgeous hair results, and I wanted in. Getting the consultation was simple. I sent him a direct message, and he responded nearly immediately. When I arrived at the salon, Bao sat me down and was very thorough with his questions regarding my hair history. He asked me what I was looking for and gave me realistic expectations regarding the balayage process and results. I booked an appointment for a few weeks later (this was the earliest available, so book fast!) with the sweet receptionist out front. As luck would have it, however, a huge thunderstorm swept through Houston the night before my appointment and knocked out the power and A/C to the salon. As soon as I arrived, they explained what happened but were still able to accept clients. I'm not sure what kind of back up power they had going because the lights and hair tools were still working, but the A/C was non-existent. This little snag didn't stop me from getting my hair did! I've been waiting weeks for this appointment and I was gonna sit there in the slowly rising heat and take it. Apparently I wasn't the only one either, because there wasn't one person I saw turn away from their appointment due to the temp. The process took about 6 hours, starting with a quick trim and 2 bleaching sessions (needed to get rid of the purple Overtone coloring I put on myself during a desperate attempt for for change during Covid last year), and ended with him drying, straightening, and finally curling my hair. We chit chatted while he was working, but I mostly occupied my time reading my Kindle. Bao continuously checked on me throughout the process, and the final result did not disappoint! You can tell he really enjoys his work, and was very kind and thorough in telling me what products he recommends to maintain my hair. Oh, and because it was getting a little toasty in the salon, they passed out these delicious popsicles to anyone who wanted one. How nice is that? Judy is our girl. She is the sweetest and extremely talented. I believe she is known as the QUEEEEN of perms! My Husband only trust her from his perm to his haircuts. I also go to her for color and cut. She is SO GOOD with layer haircuts too. She is truly a master. Highly recommend.
