How has this not been reviewed?!?!? The Katy Trail is the environmental savior of Uptown. Granted, it's entire manufactured . . . but we live in Dallas right? We do it up right here!! We'll build our nature our own damn selves! For those who don't know, the Katy trail is a 3.5 mile paved trail that runs from the American Airlines Center, basically to SMU. It's very secluded, in the fact that it only crosses 2 streets (Knox and Harvard). They have recently finished all but a few stretches of the rubber running trail, which is MUCH better for those with joint issues (I suddenly feel like I'm a 75 year old man who mixing up his Metamucil for the week and wondering when the Ed Sullivan show is going to come back on). It's plenty wide enough to run with a partner, and the Friends of the Katy Tail ( http://www.katytraildallas.org/ ) have done an amazing job with the upkeep and the landscaping of the trail. I actually saw 3 or 4 volunteers out there this morning when I went for a run. The police have also stepped up their presence, which is very welcome. Safety first kids! Overall, this is one of the gems of Dallas. It's so nice to be able to get a good, uninterrupted run in, without having to go to White Rock. The Katy Trail is like a mini Central Park, in that "If I didn't have some sort of nature in my life, I'd lose my mind and not in a good way" way. Ok, this review is going to be from several points of view. Cycling - 2 stars... I really don't think this is a good place to ride a faster style road bike. A cruiser bike... maybe, but not on a busy good weather day. As a road cyclist I find this trail raises my blood pressure and heart rate out of fear alone. Runners, walkers, dogs, kids, etc... all of which could send you crashing at any given moment. I suggest sticking to the road unless the trail is empty. Walking - 4 stars... I like that there is a pedestrian only section and wish more people would use it. In fact, its go the nicer surface for runners to help with knee troubles. I usually enjoy walking on this section of the trail, even on a busy day it's pleasantly shaded. Running - 4 Stars... See "Walking" Dog Walking - 3 stars... maybe 2. While I love walking my baby, I feel like the chance encounters here with other dogs, cyclists, runners, kids etc could be a potential disaster. I've been cycling down the path and seen owners with dogs off leash... really? Are you mad? Lots of little parks off the trail, I'll take my baby to those. Having a Trail - 5 Stars... to have this trail smack in the center of town, made from former railroad is priceless. The tree's, nice walkways, access up and down the city from far uptown to downtown is so wonderful. In such a "cramped" location, it's a gift. read more

Katy, I love you. You're my kind of girl. You not only are good for people watching and dog walking, which are two of my favorite things, but you also help me get a good workout. Besides yoga, you are really the ONLY way I get a good workout. For some reason when I hit your smooth paved ways I feel this tingle of extra energy and a boost of motivation. I don't' know what it is... but you just do it for me! The bestie and I have been rollerblading the Katy for years. It's been great watching the trail and its popularity grow over time. This trail is for sure the best in Dallas and for me the location is key. Easy access for those in the downtown and uptown area. These days we usually opt to park at the AA Center when visiting, unless there is a game or concert. We have no problem finding a spot and that extra hike up the hill to the trail gives a little extra work out, though as the trail has expanded it's become easier and easier to access. The Katy is a fabulous place to work out whether you are a runner, walker, biker, or rollerblader. The trial consists of 3 1/2 miles (each way) of gloriously smooth pavement along with a special runners trail. The trail can get pretty full, but I have never experienced it being overloaded to where I felt unsafe when blazing along on my inline wheels. Most of the trail is shaded which is awesome during those hotter summer months. The trail also has various water fountains throughout good for a break and rehydration. I also like that the trail is well lit making you feel more safe should your workout last past sunset. If you too enjoy this trail then help support its expansion and upkeep. Each year the Katy Trail 5K raises money for this very reason. I have participated the last 3 years and it has proven to be a worthy cause. Not only do you get a t-shirt for the event, but there are complementary food and drinks following from some great local restaurants and sponsors. Such a awesome way to help support a place I enjoy visiting and a great way to mingle with the community. I highly recommend participating if you love Katy as much as I do. Dallas and surrounding cities need to understand the significance of the Katy Trail. Everyone loves the many miles of winding-around-Dallas track. It's very busy and heavily used throughout the week and weekend. So city planners take notice; We love our bike, run, and walking trails. We humans need a place to convey ourselves outside, and we feel healthier and better about ourselves when we do. The Katy Trail lifts our spirits, gets us healthier, and connects us with nature. So build more trails like Katy! Now here's the bad. A few people get killed on this trail every year - usually via some violent crime. Maybe there's a way to look at the statistics and not feel too concerned, but I think this is unacceptable. There needs to be more law enforcement out there, especially in early morning, dusk, and nighttime. During the day it's cool. On the weekend it's probably the best after 8am and before dusk -- then the trail and very safe. I would caution that if you're going to ride a bike or jog and wear headphones, make sure you can still hear what's going on around you. There are cyclist flying around corners and rushing up from the rear; If you don't hear them announce their approach, someone's going to get hurt. I've seen it happen! read more

This is a fantastic trail! I wouldn't necessarily call it a nature hike or anything since it passes through town and you're never too far away from buildings and such. But it's still a pretty solid place to go on a run or a casual stroll with family or friends as it isn't very difficult and it's pretty flat the whole time. I really was surprised by how well maintained the trail was. It was very clean, had plenty of lighting and overall I felt really safe. Still, I would encourage everyone to exercise with someone if you're going to be coming at off hours since the trail is pretty long. We came in the morning and it was pretty easy for us to find parking but I imagine during peak hours it could get difficult. We went on a short walk and then stopped for lunch at the Katy Trail Ice House! I think the trail is very convenient especially for those living in the area because you can easily run some errands while exercising. It looked like a good trail for your dogs too. Lots of places for them to sniff and run around. Overall, a solid trail and one worth visiting when you're in the area! 5/5 read more

The Katy Trail is probably the nicest trail I have ever been on. I lived in Dallas for a few months at the Gables at Knoxbridge which is a couple blocks away. I tried to go to the trail before work every chance I got. It was absolutely one of the nicest places in Dallas I encountered. I have to say though, the main motivation to keep going to the Katy Trail was all of the beautiful girls on it. My god. I wish I could go back right now. read more

The quick and dirty of the Katy Trail - good place to go for a short morning/evening run. Great place to take a date if you're both active, or just need to relieve some stress from work before heading out for a few beers with the guys. Plenty of places to get on at...normally we tend to start near Chuys (Knox). Have never had any issues feeling unsafe. The path tends to be tunneled by trees on one side, houses/condos on the other, so it tends to block the wind and provide a nice regulated running environment. Unfortunately, that causes a lot of runs to be warmer than around White Rock - the breeze makes for a nice cooldown. It tends to get a little crowded at times - everything from roller bladers, to people walking with strollers, to people walking their dogs. I wouldn't do any serious running here, like long weekend runs, tempos, intervals, etc. Casual running is the name of game on the trail, but it's a nice break from White Rock. read more

Katy Trail is a great path to walk/blade/bike down. It's a good length that has a fair amount of entry points. I generally like to enter at Lee Park and then head up to the Knox point for some cooling off. I definitely agree with others who have already posted about possible crime along the trail. Crime can happen in any setting. Just use caution and, better yet, exercise with a friend. If you are solo and worried, stick to peak hours, busy sections of the trail, and don't wear headphones. read more

I love this trail :) It's busy enough where I feel safe and not congested enough where I can still find parking. The trail is enjoyable year round thanks to the trees that line the trail. They provide ample shade and block the extra wind. There are benches, water fountains, and doggy doo-doo bags throughout the trail. I don't think this is a great place for cyclists, it's too congested and you might run over a dog. If you're afraid of dogs, you shouldn't come here either because there are plenty of them running along-side their owners. This isn't a must-go place to run but if it's convenient for you, I highly recommend it. read more

Absolutely love this trail! Whether you are walking your dog, riding a bike, roller blading, running, jogging, or just plain walking, the Katy Trail is perfect for you. Even though it's located in the heart of the city, the trail is well maintained and is still very naturesque. Additionally, the trail has plenty of lighting, and not matter the time of day, feels very safe. That said, there have been incidents in the past, so I would encourage anyone to walk/run/jog in groups if you are going at an unpopular time of day. No matter the color, size, shape, or age, all trail enthusiasts can be found on Katy Trail and is a place I highly recommend to exercise. Added bonus: If you live in uptown or the surrounding area, the trail goes all the way down to the AAC if you prefer to walk instead of driving/taxi/uber. read more

Great place to get your exercise fix in if you're in the Uptown area and don't feel like being confined to a treadmill. There's not much to say without reiterating what others have already said, but I do have to agree with Chris that, despite the recent crimes, it's not anymore dangerous than anywhere else in the city. Plus, Friends of Katy Trail are working hard to get volunteer "VIPs" who will patrol the trail in pairs during most hours of the day. The trail is also lit all the way up the Knox now. read more

It's beautiful, safe, has easy access from different areas, and (if you're into this sort of thing) it's great for running/biking/etc. Oh yeah, and it's FREE! Yes folks, the weather is getting reallly nice out. Which means runners, cyclist, dog-walkers, roller-bladers, boot-campers, cell phone talkers, and even that weird lady with the zig-zag side-to-side adult razor scooter things are out in full force along the scenic Katy Trail. Being a marathoner myself, I am thankful to have such a scenic and unique running trail so close to home and work. Sure, ... it isn't open or a loop like White Rock Lake, but for shorter distances and great people watching ... it can't be beat. However, this is not a good location for serious road cyclist. If you have a puppy in the front basket, fine - pedal along all you want. However, if you are wearing multi-colored coordinated spandex and own your own aero-helmet (guilty!), you should really explore other options that don't involve playing Frogger with out of control dogs on leashes and unsuspecting pedestrians. There just is not room to get up to full speed unfortunately. Also, runners should exercise caution and not wear headphones while jogging. There have been some serious (and unfortunately fatal) accidents this past year. Just be careful and enjoy this scenic and enjoyable escape from downtown and its surround communities. From the American Airlines center all the way to McCommas, Katy Trail provides a great alternative to running neighborhood streets or trekking all the way out to White Rock Lake. Wow, Katy Trail has gotten a face lift over the last year! The addition of Snyder's Union and a couple other entrances has really vamped up the trail. I loved it when they added the lights, too. Running on the Katy Trail is great. Parts of the trail have concrete only and other parts have both concrete and running turf, which is a little more cushy (these are technical terns, friends). What I really love about the trail is that it has a very gradual and steady grade. I'm not sure the total elevation of the trail from Mockingbird to Reverchon Park, but it's not like running straight up a hill :) It's okay, I know I'm a weenie runner; I've come to terms with it. To sum up, it's well lit, newly beautified, safe, easy to run... and did I forget to mention that it backs right up to restaurants and bars? LOL, it does! read more

Katy Trail is truly one of Dallas' gems. It's a great place where anyone can go and be active and enjoy the outdoors at any fitness level. Or, it's just great for people watching. There are people walking, jogging, running, walking their dogs (doggie cleanup stations along the way are great), rollerblading, and biking. It's very well kept up and they've recently completed their lighting upgrade so the place is lit at night (although I still wouldn't go alone at night). To me, it's kind of a poor man's Central Park--active area with lots of greenery and great views of Dallas. Of course it's not actually a park, it's a trail, but that's still kind of the vibe I get. And also all the houses and condos along the trail are HELLA expensive, but it's just an analogy, GOSH. There are lots of spots to park and hop on the trail, I usually park next to the electrical yard off Cole/Carlisle, but there's also Reverchon Park and that theater off Turtle Creek. I've read that the Katy Trail will eventually be pretty expansive, starting downtown and connecting White Rock Lake to the Trinity River. I am hoping to participate in the Katy Trail 5K next year--not only is it a great place to run, but I've heard the food/drink spread is AWESOME after the race (what great motivation, huh?) read more

Bike, Run, Walk, Ride, or talk on phone you can do all these on the Katy trail. I prefer the first two myself. Yes it can get crowded but never to the point that it becomes a huge issue. My entry point is Reverchon Park where there is plenty of off road parking available. I find it best to park behind the ball field. It is just a short distance from there to the trail. If you want a hill to climb then you can go right towards American Airlines Center which is about 1/2 mile away. If you go left on the trail you will have just over 2 1/2 miles to uptown where it ends. Not long you will pass the katy Ice House, who place water jugs and cups our each day for users of the trail to use for free. read more

Best running trail I've ever been on! It has 2 lanes, one for pedestrians and another for runners. There are also cute little eateries and bars along the trail. If you're a pet owner, there are water stations for your dogs. The trees are also wrapped with lights for some illumination at night. Just a heads up though, parking is a little hard to find and although it wasn't too crowded when I went, I can definitely see it becoming congested with traffic. I'm definitely coming again if I'm ever in the area for a workout. read more

It is one of my favorite places to go with friends. I'm not a fan of crowded parks. Katy trail keeps it pretty tranquil. There are always people jogging or on their bikes and the peple watching is great. It is pet-friendly which is ok with me, but if that is a concern, be warned people! The dogs are always great though and on leashes. There is of course a million places to stop and get a drink around Katy Trail which is why, let's be honest, a lot of us go "excercise" here. It's a very Dallas spot. Not touristy. Which is one of my favorite reasons to come here. read more

The good ole faithful Katy Trail. I try to run on this trail as often as possible. It is nice that walkers, biking, running. I have even seen people roller skating. There is a good portion with trees so you can have a bit if shade and some breeze. Plus, I have seen more police in certain areas. I am glad safety is a big concern. This makes me happy. I don't tend to run at night just because it does not seem like the greatest decision for a female. Especially if I run by myself but with a group it would probably be good. Katy Trail is a priceless emenity to all residents and visitors of Uptown, Dallas. Though it is officially a public City of Dallas park, it is supported from what I understand by many private contributions. Also so many businesses spin off and benefit near and around it purely because of it's existance such as bootcamp style gyms, unique tennis in a parking lot instruction, and apartment complexes which conveniently stick "... by Katy Trail" as a suffix to their names. I first found out about Katy Trail after I moved to Dallas from my friends' who told me about the Katy 5K event which is held in May of each year followed by a grand party. What was funny is that I didn't realize that the Katy Trail was literally a stones throw away from my apartment even though I had already signed up for the event a few months in advance. But once I finally figured that out, I went to check it out, and I fell in love with it ever since. What I really like a lot about the Katy Trail is that they have dual paths. One side with a softer Track material reserved for Pedestrians only and the other is a concrete path which is used by roller bladers, bikers, and others. The entire trail is 3.5 Miles long and luckily I live right in the middle. So I can choose which side I want to go towards and come back from in approximately the same amount of time from eiter side. Katy Trail definitely helps me out, and I hope wherever I move to next has something very similar otherwise I will have to refuse from moving out :) J/k. But it will certainly be a hard decision. read more

I ran Katy Trail the first time last November. From that point on, I fell in love. The trail provides as a great motivator, as you are surrounded by people who like to work out just as much as you, or so I suppose. It's roughly 3-4 miles in length, so you have a visual throughout the entire trail to use as benchmarks. Not only that, it's a great place to sightsee. Plenty of eye candy and fit looking girls. May I add that some of the girls who run here motivate me to look as toned as them? The whole trail is always clean and properly maintained. I guess people who usually litter find it hard to litter such a beautiful trail like this. Lots of trees, and squirrels here, too. You can't get a natural jogging/biking environment better than this. The trail provides as an escape from reality. When you're stressed from work or school, Katy Trail can help with that. When I run, I never stop running. I always try to run the whole way front and back when I can because when you are finished, you get the feeling of accomplishment and nothing feels better than that. The trail is usually the busiest around the late afternoon or early evening - the time people get off from work. There are fewer people who run in the morning though. read more

I loved walking this trail today! It's a 3.5 mile long paved path spanning the right side of Highway 75 mostly shaded by trees. Along the first part, there are multiple points you can stop and overlook the very green park below the Katy Trail that also features paved walkways and a little river. The trail has a pedestrian side for the slower walkers on the Southern part of the trail which was nice. We also stopped at the Katy Trail Ice House on our way back to our car after we came to the end. My only qualm is that sometimes the markers aren't easily found, so I was very confused where I was on the trail since this was the first time I walked it. I ended up using my Google Maps app to figure out how far I was from either end. Next time I walk the trail, I'll probably take the detours down to the park below and walk along the river! read more

The Katy Trail is a nice place to run. Due to all of the unfortunate incidents that have been reported to happen here, I make sure to only come here during daylight hours. As long as you don't mind running with others and seeing a lot of different kinds of dogs, this is a great place to stay fit and enjoy a cool run or walk. read more

I like the idea of Katy Trail, not every city has a trail available for walking, running, biking, roller blading, etc. that is separate from traffic. I had a ride but hear parking can be tough at times. We walked about 2.5 miles before turning around. We came across the Katy Trail Ice House that seems like a fun weekend hangout with outdoor seating, cornhole and frozen drinks...dog friendly. They had water sitting out for dogs and their owners on the trail. I look forward to going back when it's a little cooler out. It was upper 90s and the trail is only partially shaded. read more

I thoroughly enjoy Katy Trail! I've been walking/attempting to run it for years. It can get crowded on beautiful weekends but it offers such amazing scenery that one can't let a few people deter them from going. I often see runners and bikers which keep me motivated in not giving up when I feel like Im ready to forfeit my "healthier lifestyle" and venture off to a Burger shack. There's also plenty of doggies on the trail that are running alongside their owners that distract me from the burning sensation in my calves. There are stopping point where you can lookout on the city and even an Ice House that you can stop at along the trail and grab a bite or drink. read more

This has quickly become my favorite place for a run. Fall/winter time is low traffic and for many stretches, you'll probably have the place to yourself. The trail is kept clean and the trees and such along the sides block so much wind its really spoiling. There are SO many places you can hop on the trail, I've been very startled a few times by people who pop out. I often see cops on bikes riding the trail - keeping a look out, and it is somewhat lit. Personally, I'd probably decline taking a jog after dark by myself, but you can be your own judge. As always, some people are inconsiderate to others using the trail, but that is no fault to the trail itself! I personally am astonished at the gains I've made in running and since the majority of them have taken place on the trail, it'll be a near and dear place to me! read more

A runner's oasis protected from the chaotic streets and drivers in Dallas. Starting from American Airlines center is the best way to start out, because on your run back, you can focus on the downtown skyline. The best time is at 4:30 since the sun will set at some point on your run and the park is not as packed. Also, after it rains, you have the path to yourself and you feel like you are running through a forest, if you can imagine. People watching is at its best, and if you love dogs, that is a show in itself. Reverchon Park is also fun to walk down the stairs to and stroll around the tree filled park. I play basketball there, since it has great shade from the sun. One recommendation would be to put some bathrooms there, please! I don't care if it is a couple of Roman style holes in a stone bench behind some bushes, but something is better than holding it in while you attempt to finish your workout. These are some of the many things you can do on Katy Trail: Walk, Run, Walk your dog, walk your child, rollerblading, biking... Seriously this place is awesome. I have been paying gym membership for over half a year but still whenever i want to exercise, I can think of no other place than Katy Trail. It is well lit and there is always several ppl walking/running at all times making it pretty safe. I also have seen security riding their bike up and down Katy trail. so that makes me feel pretty safe even at night times. Although I never went past 8.30 pm(in the summer)so not sure how it is then. They have water fountains at decent intervals and at some parts of the trail they have the cushiony running track which is great for running. read more

We were there to shoot our engagement photos, as it had a lot of history as a couple. The outdoor patio manager and staff were highly disrespectful, we had to call them over three times just to get our beer order. When I was trying to explain taking our engagement photos the manager and server both rolled their eyes. My fiancé and I have always told people if traveling through or to Dallas they need to make a stop. However this last experience, was honestly a shame, and disappointing. We drove from Oklahoma for these specific engagement photos, and now when I see them it will be a reminder of being treated poorly. I understand customer service and cliental, but I was was not aware that there is a dress code, or social status needed to enjoy the Ice House. Up front, I need to own that I've only ran Katy Trail once and was a little freaked out by stories of women being abducted there--I guess it's kind of urban lore or something that was a problem years ago. (Kind of like how people in Dallas think Deep Ellum is still dangerous.) So if I could put aside the fact that I spent 30% of my run planning emergency escape routes--which made me thankful for the many entrances/exits on to Katy Trail--and focus on the other 70%, I would say I enjoyed my experience. I parked at the access point behind a furniture store off of Knox and had a little bit of trouble finding the parking lot--and to be honest, the trail itself. Friends had given me directions and once I called and fessed up that I was lost--they explained I had parked in the wrong lot which is why I couldn't even find the trail. I know it's pretty sad--but I'm sure there's an app for that. So additional signage for directionally challenged people like myself might be nice. As for the trail itself, I do think Katy Trail is more of a social running scene--somewhere to go when you've got friends with you and are up for dodging dog walkers, speed walkers, roller bladers, unicyclists, and all the other assortment of cardio seekers you find out there. The mileage markers were great--marked every 1/4 mile going both directions--made for fun mental exercises over the course of the 5 miles I ran. I did see an occasional water fountain, not necessarily as predictably spaced as their mile markers. All the same, they were appreciated because I prefer not having to bring my own hydration pack. The scenery was pretty urban. Somewhere to go when you want to enjoy the city more than you want to forget you are in it. Kind of the opposite of White Rock Lake in this respect. If I ran there frequently, I would do a little more research and find an access point that had a really great place to cool down/stretch. Overall, for Dallas, a good place to go for a run. read more

Beautiful! Living in Oak Cliff, I had decided to run all the way to Katy Trail this morning. Mind you, I usually run 7-8 miles a day, so running there is not an issue for me at all. Upon running around, it's absolutely a safe haven in the middle of Dallas. On a Sunday morning, you would find so many runners doing their rounds on the trail. No wonder prices of property along the trail skyrocket. THIS IS A GOLDMINE FOR RUNNERS RIGHT HERE. If I could afford it, I would move here. Overall, it's definitely worth the 2.5 mile trek for me to get on the trail and run the 3.5 mile length of it. read more

I love the Katy Trail on weekdays, but weekends get so packed that you can't ride fast. Otherewise, it's a decent trail for walking the dogs or a leisurely ride... The IceHouse makes it pretty appealing for those who want to have a cold one after their eveining jog/ride.... read more

Such an awesome trail! I don't know how I would have lived / stayed in Dallas without this trail. I have been a runner basically all of my life, and got hurt running on the streets of Dallas 2 times within 2 months. Huge huge cuts, one even got infected... This is all before I discovered the Katy Trail. When I used to run on the streets, I always wondered where other runners were, I thought maybe people in Dallas are just not into running. When I finally discovered the trail, I realized this is where all the people are! This is a great trail, there are marks on the ground to let you know how much you have run. How awesome is that? I've never seen that on any other trails before. I would prefer to run on softer area than the pavement / cement. But hey, this trail is awesome and I'm sure as good as it gets, especially with the mile markers everywhere! read more

I recently relocated from Georgia where there is no shortage of trails of gorgeous scenery. I LOVE this trail. There's a good mix of people, lots of good people watching, good views of the city, plenty of trees, it's pet and kid friendly and it seems pretty safe. I wouldn't go walking by myself at night since there are a few slightly shady areas along the way, but during the day it's ALWAYS busy. You do see occasional graffiti on the back of buidings along the trail. There are plenty of location markers on the trail so that you can reference your location in case of an emergency. There's a side for rollerbladers and bicycles and another trail beside that one that's for running/walking made a a special shock absorbent material. Businesses put out cold water for the public along the trail. Katy Ice House is right on the trail - an awesome place to take a break and sit outside on at the picnic tables under the misters. The trail goes from downtown near the American Airlines theatre to Highland Park. Last week, there was a pet adoption site near Knox right on the trail. Despite being somewhat unsafe & crime-stricken, the Katy Trail was a hot spot while I was at SMU, and I ran it several times with friends. On weekends/evenings it's pretty crowded, and there tends to be some gossipy, pretentious, social-ladder-climbing wannabes out on the trail, so wear your best lululemons if you go. And bring your own water. There's hardly any fountains, albeit any that are clean/decent. But, on a more positive note, the city has really worked on improving the trail, its safety, etc, etc, so it's a win in my book. read more

Who doesn't love the Katy Trail? My fiance and I run on here almost every morning. Early mornings are best for traffic, or right at 5pm, but you may pass out from heat exhaustion. The trail is very well maintained, I never worry about the edges crumbling or being worried about tripping over animal waste. People are pretty respectful of the trail in that regard. Also, if you're by the Katy Trail Ice House, they almost always have cold water out for trail-goers! If you're on a bike, it's not the best place in the world to bike. Not sure where else in the actual city that is better, but I might recommend going to a park. It gets pretty crowded, so I find myself often having to slow down and wait for people to pass. For walking and running though, the traffic is at times high but still pretty manageable. read more
