Historic buildings on the Cottonwood trail
    Brent L.

It's a nice nature preserve, and well managed. If you are looking for an easy peasy stroll through the woods with a couple of views of a small pond, this is your place. When I visited, the only trails that were open were Blackjack, Cottonwood, Cicada, and Green Dragon - cool trail names, right? :) You should be able to squeeze 4.1 miles in on these trails. Not sure about the rest of the trails since they are closed until sometime in February 2021. The trails were EASY PEASY and flatter than a pancake. Things to do: - You can bring your own kayak and paddle through Beaver Pond. There's a kayak launch site near the road at the trailhead for what's listed as the "Paddling Trail." - Near the intersection of the Green Dragon and Cottonwood trails, there is a pretty cool historic log house and other outbuildings to check out. You can go into most of the buildings on your own, but the main log house is furnished with artifacts from the late 1800s and is only available for pre scheduled tours. (check https://www.llela.org/ for the deets!) - Even if you aren't kayaking, you can get a sweet view of Beaver Pond by hiking along the Cottonwood trail It's currently $5 per vehicle to get in and they are not accepting cash at this time. Porta potties at each trailhead.

Texas just keeps on surprising me with these mini gems all over the state. This particular gem of a nature preserve was one that I've been meaning to check out for a while. Finally, this past weekend I had the time. It is a $5 park entry and well worth it. Get out there early on weekends as it is quite the attraction in this part of town for nature lovers alike. Saw lots of families and even kids getting their hike on! GREAT set of trails here for newbies, as each trail loop is rather short (2 miles or less and several loops throughout so you can repeat or move on) so it gives you a chance to get accustomed to the terrain. We did the "Black Jack" loop on Sunday and had a ball of a time! There's beautiful wildlife and lots of shade. Saw 2 huge deer a few feet away from us playing and having fun. This time of year it is perfectly lush lots of colors to see, fabulous for photos. The park rangers take great care of this park and I very much enjoyed this loop. The beaver pond loop is a bit disheveled, so just be aware and wear the proper clothing. Not sure if it is due to weather or fires etc but they are doing some work back there. Definitely start with black jack. Bittern marsh at the end of the trails is great for photos as well. Great outing and lots to do in the area not far from the park. I truly enjoyed coming out here to explore and looking forward to next time.

Loved visiting this reserve. The entrance fee was $5 per vehicle and I was given a park map upon entering. The trails are well maintained and easy to find and follow. I walked 3 of the trails that were open that day: Cottonwood trail, Cicada Trail, and the Green Dragon Trail. All three trails were beautiful. The Cotton Wood trail had a few surprises that I thoroughly enjoyed. There was a little historic site along the trail with a small wooden cabin and a few placards with historical facts to read. There was also a small jetty leading to an overlook of the lake. I truly enjoyed coming across these two sites on this trail. My favorite of all 3 trails was the Cicada Trail. I liked that it wound all through the forest and had a nice mix of natural trees, shrubbery, and water features along the trail. The Green Dragon Trail was also nice to explore, but since it had rained for a few days before I visited, the trail was super muddy at certain parts. Overall, this was a fun trip and I will surely visit again in the future to explore the remainder of the trails!

It is HUGE - definitely the largest splash pad I've seen in terms of sheer size. It is designed so that the water spouts at the top of the splash pad form a small river that flows down to the lower area, where there are more spouts, plus rocks to climb on and grassy (turf) hills to roll down. My kids like bringing small toys and racing them down the river. The real star here is the shaded observation area for the mamas, though. There is no other park that treats us so well, providing expansive shade tents all the way around the park. There are picnic tables, but for the most part it's BYOC (bring your own chair) - or blanket - and set up shop on the turf, under the shade, in an elevated spot so you can keep an eye on the littles playing below. The bathrooms are new and usually pretty clean, although sometimes they do still smell like a porta potty. The splash pad hours are kind of a bummer, with the water not turning on until 10am. In the peak heat of the summer, we would be there waiting right at 10, but by 12:30 or so the water already felt like bath water - not refreshing and honestly kind of gross. I wish it opened at 8am so we could enjoy it for longer. Now that summer is over, the splash pad is only open on the weekends. They have a super helpful and very clear calendar which posts the hours here: https://www.highlandvillage.org/calendar.aspx?CID=31&showPastEvents=false There is a traditional playground directly adjacent to the splash pad, but it's unremarkable - certainly nothing you'd drive out of your way for. The rest of the park is BEAUTIFUL and well landscaped. I'm not sure what they use that massive pavilion for, but honestly I think it makes a case for a good wedding venue! If you're looking for a splash pad to add to your summer rotation, put this one on the list.

My husband and I came here for a weekend trek, and it's easily one of the best outdoor spots in North Texas. What I love most is the versatility. Whether you're looking for a smooth, paved stroll or want to get your boots a little dusty on the dirt hiking trails, they've got you covered. It's a great mix of elevation and flat stretches. It's a great spot for everyone. Pets are welcome (on leashes!), and there is a fantastic playground near the parking lot--perfect for kiddos who still have energy to burn after a hike. You'll see a beautiful variety of plants and likely some local wildlife. Just a heads-up: they do have warning signs posted for snakes and poison ivy, so definitely keep an eye on your surroundings while you explore. The parking lot is huge, but this place is popular! We arrived around 1:00 PM and it was nearly at capacity. We were lucky to snag a stall, but I'd definitely recommend arriving earlier in the morning if you want to avoid the parking hunt.

Which was about 30 mins into the trail (I'm a slow walker tho) They do have some areas you can cut through to get to other trails but I don't recommend trying this after it rains because it's very muddy. The scenery from the tower was beautiful. I do wish they had more benches to rest though because there were only two on the trail we took. At the entrances there is a park for kids to play and a barbq area that looks over the trail. There's also plenty of parking! And the restrooms seem decent
