I was driving 30 to 50 miles to have services done when I was commuting anyway, they may not be cheap but the service is great and with gas and parts all costing so much, they are cheaper than driving in. Plus they are happy smiling folks way more often than the town workers. I really enjoy the office staff as well as John and a lot of the workers have picked me or my car and truck stuff as needed. They are also AAA drivers. All have been good to a senior widow that talks too much and needs extra help most of the time. Good place to get not just safety stickers but repairs and AAA works with them too. I take my truck and my boat trailer here to get safety inspections. I had another vehicle repaired there and I never really knew what was wrong, but it cost me about $600. I didn't press them for an explanation, which I should have, but I was just relieved to have my car repaired so I wasn't stranded so far from home. Since then I've heard some not so flattering stories about how they were supposed to do certain inspections and repairs, filter replacements, things like that. Apparently they charged the people for what they said they were going to do, but they did not actually do the repairs. So take it with a grain of salt, if I take my vehicle to them for any repairs again, I'll be sure to understand exactly what is going to be done versus what was done. Women to get treated differently than men when it comes to Auto Repairs so I'm overly cautious about it. read more

These guys are real life super heroes all day! My work van broke down first thing in the morning and I needed it towed 65 miles (back to the area I live) to get repaired. The dispatcher Linda was very helpful and reassuring, promptly arranging a driver to come out to me and updating me with expected arrival via text. The driver Paul provided excellent service and took extra care to ensure my vehicle (over 8k pounds unloaded) was safe and secure. Since the transmission was shot, I couldn't drive it myself into the spot where the mechanics wanted it parked. So Paul got out after putting it down and pushed it into place! Kau Auto Repair was called and the dispatcher took a personal interest in my situation, called me to make sure I was where I needed to be, that I was in a safe spot, and put a rush on the job because I was at the side of a road that can get busy. I had a flat tire in the middle of the night while on vacation and required roadside assistance. My credit card company called Ka'u Auto Repair. The eta was 1.5 hours. When the time had passed no one showed up. I tried calling the number provided multiple times and no one picked up. The credit company could not reach them either. This company is dishonest and irresponsible. They agreed to perform roadside assistance even though they had no intention to show up, leaving a family stranded at midnight in an unfamiliar environment. They not only fail to uphold their business agreement but also basic moral principles. I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere. read more

I was a regular customer at Kau Auto Repair, state inspection, brake check, oil change. My cars A/C wasn't working, I asked the owner John I they did A/C work? He told me, "Yes." The issue was if you charge the A/C, three weeks later it wasn't working again. I brought it to the shop. The estimate was around $650. I authorized the work. After it was all apart I was told it needed something else, and they would order it. A week later the part came in, another two days it was finished. The total bill $1031.00. I was surprised by the extra almost $400 charge. When I asked why they hadn't warned me. I was told, "you didn't ask." I paid the bill a little miffed but glad to at least have A/C. Three weeks later, No A/C. Brought the car back, they recharged it with dye asked me to come back in a couple of weeks. When I returned, the new estimate was $1,400.00 more. This is a 14 year old car. I was reluctant to put $650 into it. Never mind $2,400.00! So now I drive without A/C. $1,000.00 poorer. Ka'u Auto Repair will never see my business again Proper and full diagnosis with a close estimate, is what I expected when I ask if they did A/C work. read more

Original review: Alternator died stranding my friend in Naalehu at 11 PM. Ka'u Auto Repair was dispatched by our insurance company and they got the Jeep picked up and repaired in 24 hours for a reasonable price---- plus accommodated us to pick it up Saturday night on our way back from Kona. They were great ----and responsive to the phone when needed. Mahalo ! *update March 2018*-- our new alternator failed 14 months later, contacted Ka'u Auto Repair, they quickly looked up the date of the repair but sadly the warranty on the part was 12 months/12,000 miles so we were not covered :( read more

Our company is working on a proof of concept here on the Big Island. We had some issues navigating the red tape regarding vehicle registration and the crew at Ka'u Auto Repair was a great help. Now we go to them for everything and the customer service is always outstanding. The only reason we didn't give them 5-stars is because they aren't open at all on the weekend. He SAVE ME with my truck one day in think that I could save some money I went to a local neighbor who I didn't realize was bi-polar!
