We decided to take a dog out from Kauai humane society for a field trip. I signed up online by making a donation and picking a time slot. When we got there we told them about our plans and they matched us with the perfect dog, Amilea. They gave us a backpack with water, beach towel, treats and toys for her. The staff was very friendly and they recommended brewery we could take her to. Amilea is the sweetest pup who got to socialize with different people on our hike. When we dropped her off she was happy to see the staff. The facility seemed clean. I hope Amilea and all the pups over here find a loving home soon! read more

Oh my gosh, their take a shelter pet out for the day program is so fantastic! The staff were so friendly and helpful. We told them our plan (walking Kapaa bike path) and they matched us with the most Perfect little boy, Hamma! They sent us off with a backpack full of goodies- water, bowl, toys, and lots of treats. Hamma is the bestest boy you will ever meet with the cutest overbite! We spent the day with Hamma and even were able to get him a shaved ice with bone broth at Honu ice (recommended by the staff at the humane society.) These people are doing great work and it can't be easy with their limited resources. We so hope Hamma finds the bestest home! On a recent trip to Kauai my husband and I took one of the pups here -- Paxon -- out for a field trip day and it was such a blast! Absolutely Amazing....I went twice and had a companion for about 6 hours each day took one dog I believe it was AC (has a sibling named DC)....took him out to the beach and an easy hike for my first whole day in Kauai. Dog was cool didn't listen perfectly, but really I'm there to help them enjoy life.... they gave me toys and food/snacks for the dog.... They forgot to put the poop baggies in there and I had no way to pickup the poo...LOL I felt kinda bad but what was I to do!?!?! The last full day there I got another dog her name was Fluoride a mixed terrier and it was first time out ever so she was very shy and timid....scared when I first took her out of the car she tried to cower under the car but I got her out and she did okay for being her first time...we walked across the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge she did okay with that even though it started to rain a little as well...we walked around the town....and got her a pup cone as well (just shaved ice with no flavor)...Took her to eat a late lunch as well at Leahi Health...I didn't feed her....but gave her a couple snacks that were there....and we walked around Old Koloa town....and went into many stores and people acknowledged her and I hope she had fun... Overall, what a great experience and next time I'm there I'll be doing the same!!!! In the mean time any locals that read my review please go to the Humane Society if you want a pet dog help save these pups please! My partner wanted to take a dog out on a walk for her birthday while we were visiting and that's what we did. Signing up for the day trip is really easy through their website. We asked for a medium sized dog and got Catchafire, a black lab mix. The staff are knowledgeable and extremely friendly. You get a backpack for the day with everything you need, including, water, water bowl, towel and treats. You'll also get a card with suggestions on where you can and can't take the dog. We took Catchafire to Shipwreck Beach and Moalepe trail. At first he wouldn't take treats but eventually he opened up but would still only eat one type of treat. When we returned him, we had to stop off at the Petco and get him a toy. Overall great experience, good exercise for both human and dog. read more

We did the Field Trip program and got to spend the day with Max, a cute lil hound mix puppy. They let you choose what size and then suggest a dog based on that and the activities you're planning to do. They do have some new restrictions for the dogs' safety, but nothing I would consider a dealbreaker. We took Max hiking around Poipu and hung out at the beach by the Hyatt in the shade. Lots of folks stopped by to say hi and he was very friendly to everyone. If you're thinking about doing it, do it! read more

Love their field trip for shelter dog program. We lucked out with Master Splinter. He's a 5 month old mix. We had an awesome day that started at 11am and ended at 5pm on the nose. You can tell the volunteer staff any preferences. We asked for mellow and this pup delivered. He was a great companion and loved to stay close and snuggle. Loved every human he met and especially loved little kids. We hiked at Keahua Arboretum, stopped for shaved ice at Hee Fat General Store in Kapa'a, stopped at 3 beaches (shipwreck, Gillin's and Maha'ulepu) and ended at Mucho Aloha Brewery. He was an angel all day and cannot recommend this program more. They will ship your new family member to the mainland. $200 to west coast and $300 to east coast. For $40 they geared us up with leash, water, treats, toys, poop bags, towel and backpack. Everything to set us up for a perfect Kauai doggy day!! As bummed as we were to drop off our dream boat for the day, it was clear he was loved by the Humane Society staff too. Come stop in and make a furry babe part of your Ohana. read more

Let's call this the best humane society in the states due to their brilliant program that allows people to take shelter dogs on a day field trip to dog friendly places. They make this so easy by providing a backpack with everything your pup needs and locations they point you to for the kind of day you want to have. The dog wears a harness that says adopt me to promote adoption. They can also have shave ice with no flavoring. The staff are so friendly. They asked what size dog and what type of day we were looking to do to match the pup to the people. We picked 'beach day' and medium to small dog. We got this 8 month puppy from who was extremely sweet. Cost was $40-$45 dollars to take the dog out (covers supplies in backpack) and I donated after to extra support. LOVE this whole experience. Needless to say, this field trip during our trip to Kauai changed my life for the better. For a nominal donation, my boyfriend and I took "Overcast" out for the day where we went to the beach and grabbed some shave ice. I fell in love with this sweet dog and it was so wonderful to see her demeanor light up as she got to explore the island with us and work on her socialization. Overcast was thrilled to get out and she was still more than happy to return to the shelter when all was said and done. The facility was clean and the staff were so kind. I wanted to fly Overcast back to L.A. but I wasn't equipped to handle a larger dog in my one bedroom apartment so when I came back to my hometown, I started fostering for rescues and eventually adopted one of my own. They offer such an amazing opportunity for their adoptable dogs to get exposure and to hopefully find their perfect family. For any dog lovers on vacation, this program is a must do. read more

This place is a joke and has been since Covid. Yes, the day trip plan is awesome for a shelter to do but I feel it's more them not wanting to walk or give the dogs any yard time themselves. This place used to be very friendly to Visitors looking to adopt. Not anymore more. You are not able to go look at any animals without an escort. (What is so secretive now). How are people supposed to find an animal to bond to them, If they can't even see them? This marks the 3rd year in a row that we tried to adopt and we're not assisted. Very sad for the animals in your care. Edited after businesses response. Not offering adoption during all your business hours is a joke. No one needs a one on one escort to look at potential adoptees. In fact this is a terrible practice as people are trying to see if they can form a bond with an animal and not if your escort already has. No one is trying to take animals out of cages. I've adopted enough to know most places... "including yours pre 2020" let people walk through and inquire if they had any assistance or want some one on one time. This isn't a Chanel Store where each customer requires a personal shopper with them... and hey... offer that to people who want it but open up your doors and stop making it so hard. The best cat I ever had I got a shelter when looking for a dog and walked past a cat kennel and he reached out to grab me... gave him my finger and he would not let go so we took him home. People don't know what they want all the time. Open your doors again. This only with an appointment and a person to walk you through is garbage. read more

The Kauai humane society has a program where visiting tourists are able to "foster" an animal for a day. It seems to be very popular as while we were there to take our doggie there were a few other people doing the same. An animal is assigned to you according to your experience with dogs and temperament. We got Rosemary, a lovely energetic pup who took us for a long walk on the beach and at the end of the day we were all wiped out and she fell asleep on the back seat of the car. What a fun day! If you're visiting Kauai... I highly recommend stopping by the Kauai Humane Society, especially if you love dogs! Or are planning on adopting. They have a "field trip" program that allows you to take shelter dogs out to dog-friendly beaches/parks/hikes. We came here pretty early and picked up "Nicholas" for the day. They let you check out the dogs they have, then you spend a few minutes to hang out with the dog in their yard to make sure you are compatible and can handle the dog. Nicholas was a real sweetheart so it was pretty quick! Mind you, there is some paperwork that needs to be filled out and you do have to provide your credit card as a deposit... totally fine as it is a liability and at least they're taking precautions should anything happen to the dog. The whole process took about 45 min between entering, picking Nicholas, and paperwork. Afterwards we were off to the beach to chill with Nicholas! He was a real sweetheart - I was so excited to hang out with a big dog for once, since I own a small dog back at home. Real snuggler in the car and he was very well behaved as we walked him on the Kalapaki Beach, which is one of the dog-friendly beaches on the island (also pretty close to the shelter). Unfortunately it was sprinkling slightly, so we could really only walk him around ... otherwise it would have been nice to take him to Waimea Canyon for a longer hike. He was pretty pooped out in the car after we took him back. They give you all the essentials for the dog - leash, water bowl, some snacks / food, doggy bags, towels, and a brochure of all the dog-friendly parks/beaches where you can take them. Nicholas wore a vest saying "Adopt Me" to advertise the shelter. We had a lot of folks thanking us for taking them out as we walked Nicholas. This is a great opportunity for these dogs that you can contribute in a fun way... and if you end up bonding with them, you can even adopt them! The shelter has a adoption program set up that allows you to bring your furry friend back to the mainland (you'll have to pay for their flight, as Alaska has ended their fly-for-free program). Please support this program and give the shelter dogs a walk in the park... literally. read more

Walked a sweet pitbull dog named Tank. He did awesome with us on a 2 mile hike. Very chill, didn't pull too much, was well behaved around other hikers. He gets excited when he first meets you but then mellows out. Also gets excitable around other dogs but again, after a while, mellows out. What a great service. ENTRANCE/PARKING: Easy to find with the large signage designating the turn to the humane society. Lots of parking available. OUTSIDE: Large dog park with designated areas for small and large dogs. There were some people in the park playing with their dogs and it was so cute! Also a good amount of grass for the dogs to play on/do their business. FIELD TRIP: Such a wonderful program! Sign up online to take a shelter dog for a field trip for a day. The humane society provides a list of recommended places to visit, as well as a backpack with all necessary supplies (including collapsible water bowl, water thermos, towel, small and large treats with some kibble intermixed, couple of toys (tennis ball and solid bone toy in our case)). I probably missed poop bags in the backpack although it was supposed to be included.. but no matter, came prepared with a bunch of plastic bags just in case. We brought lots of extra water as well, which was a good thing because it was a hot day and the dog was thirsty. The day of, I requested a 40-lb or so dog, as I figured that that was probably the heaviest dog I could manage on my own. Unfortunately, most of the dogs are larger and people who picked up their dogs earlier already chose the smaller dogs. We were paired with "smaller" Bambam, described as a terrier/American Staffordshire mix online. The humane society website actually states that he weighs 63 lbs. For a 8-year-old dog, he had a surprising amount of strength and energy! We went to both Mahaulepu Beach and Kalapaki Beach. Bambam barked at a rude guy early on, which completely made my day lol. He ran well and is very well mannered; he did not attack a smaller dog that was following him around for awhile. He did pull on the leash and slobbered a bit in the back of the car (placed puppy pads throughout the back seat, which did the trick!), but remained calm throughout most of the car ride. Overall, Bambam did very well on the field trip and really brightened people's day when they saw him trotting around. He was such a good boy and it was a privilege to spend time with him. OVERALL: Good fun! Such a great program for the shelter dogs. It was nice to take a furry pal out for the day, and it seemed like Bambam had a good time as well. I had difficulty parting with him when it was time to drop him back off at the humane society... wish we lived on island and had the capacity to adopt, or at least foster, him :( Highly recommend the shelter dog field trip program and, better yet, recommend adopting shelter animals in search of a loving family and permanent home :) read more

If you like the idea of borrowing a dog for the day while visiting Kauai, this is definitely the place for you! A lot of people show up right when the shelter opens so that they can have their first pick of the available dogs to borrow for the day. We showed up a little later and we took one of the "leftover" dogs who was passed over by everyone else. Our dog for the day was Ragnar, who was very shy but very sweet. The SPCA gave us a blanket to cover our car seat, a water bowl, and some treats. For safety, we were required to keep him leashed at all times. We took him to a few different beaches and parks, and he seemed to really enjoy his time with us, and we enjoyed his company. This is an AMAZING place to stop by for 10 minutes or a few hours. The kennels are clean and the dogs look well care for. I love their field trip program - you can take a dog out with you for the day and do hikes or chill at the beach. If you have a bit of a time, you can also take dogs out to the yard and play or hang out. There are also quite a few kittens and cats to play with! We took a darling dog named Haile and she was so much more chill and better behaved than my dogs. KHS provides everything so there's no reason to not! What a great humane society. I wish more humane societies on the mainland would follow their lead. We participated in the field trip program during our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. Gemma came with us to the beach and we hated bringing her back. She was such a sweet dog but gets ignored due to the fact that she's part pit bull. She loved taking a nap on the beach and snoring away in the car. She was nervous of the water but loved to stay close to our side while walking along the waves. Dog-sitting for a cause, FIELD TRIPS FOR SHELTER DOGS...This review is very dear to my heart as a true animal lover... THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION in mind for my boyfriend & I while in Kaua'i to visit the Kaua'i Humane Society to participate in their canine day field trip for the day program. I knew it would impact me greatly and world simultaneously wrench my heart, however making a small difference in some way by reaching out & giving such needed love, affection & TLC to a furry friend who craved it more than anything else in this world was an invaluable experience & I'll cherish the memory always. I fell in love instantly- & it was so challenging to pick just 1 fur-friend (only 1 per vehicle is allotted). Anyone who knows me, knows I'd take them all if I had the means... All those sweet little faces with sad, yet hopeful eyes that would light up in hope as soon as I'd walk near their kennel areas, tails wagging, ears raised and frantically jumping up and down, trying to get anyone's attention & even giving doggie kisses through their cages. There was one little girl (dog) who seemed to call to us... her name is Hina. Hina was brought into the shelter just a few days prior to our visit as a stray...& the love in her eyes beckoned me & it was so hard to imagine her (or ANY) of these sweet babies not having loving homes. She was the sweetest, most appreciative, low-key, mellow & loving demeanor pretty little thing I ever did see & the few hours we had her for was pure bliss as she lit up in happiness when I took her jogging, up to view Waimea Canyon to explore & was a photogenic girl and dug the canyon views as well as all the attention and lovin she received from all the fellow tourist folk up top. Between her sweet personality & brightly colored "ADOPT ME" vest she proudly donned, she ate up all the kindness & petting she received and I had several people take down info to go visit her & her fur friends at the shelter during the remainder of their stays on the island... Hina girl was so gentle & affectionate - at one point of the car ride which she contently sat on the lap for most of the duration, she turned around and stared up into my eyes and placed her little head right on my chest and never looked away. She made MY day brighter in her trust & appreciation & I couldn't help but cry happy tears as those of pure empathy behind my sunglasses while giving her all the hugs, kisses and doggie scratches she could stand! The final treat of her day, was to spoil her to a doggie meal fit for the queen she is - we ordered her own special order of plain, steamed shrimp I chopped up for her over plain steamed rice and even gave her some of my veggies I was munching on. She was in heaven... I'm sure she probably went back looking at her dry food like it was peasant food lol - but she deserved it after being the best girl all day long! My heart broke, of course - when it came time to bring her back late that afternoon & I made sure to write a brief journal in her section of the Field Trip Experience book I'm which people shared their own experiences with each dog. Tears streamed down my face the entire time (yeah, that's me & not the least bit ashamed to admit it) - but I wasn't the only one - I noticed two other women next to me quickly scribbling down their entries whilst attempting to stop the waterworks - we mustered through and after the coolest thing happened - we all sort of turned to each other and smiled, eyes red and watery and sort of laughed & gave each other a huge group hug. Animals can bring closeness to even strangers - it's part of what makes them such special beings we are blessed to have them in our lives & should never, ever take that for granted. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE'S DAY & always remember, pets are people, too! Matter of fact - WAY better in sooo many ways than a ton of humans, this is for sure! We were on our honeymoon and were missing our dog at home. We decided to do the field trip program and loved it! We were able to take Mongoose out for the day to get him out of the shelter. He was the sweetest dog and loved being out for a hike. This gave him some great time in front of people to help him get adopted. The staff was fantastic in making sure to match the dogs up based on our experience with previous dogs and what we planned to do. They explained the expectations and guidelines and were excited to have the dogs out. When we returned they had us take notes to get to know Mongoose further and ensure to match him up even better. We, on the mainland, need to take a page from our friends at the Kauai Humane Society. Wow, was I impressed! You can feel the love here! They have this program where you can essentially "check out a dog" for the day, sorta like a library book....but way more adventurous and fun! You get the benefit of pal-ing around with a dog on the island; the dog gets the benefit of having a fun island field trip with a family for the day; the shelter improves its chances of getting that dog adopted out. It's a win-win-win situation! And guess what? If you fall in love with a dog here, you can bring him home to the mainland! How cool is that! On vacation with hubby but missing my dog LillyMay. Use to doing a lot of dog fun activities with her. My husband found this on line and thought it would help me for sadness and help the many dogs that had been abandoned and brought to this facility for another chance of life. I love dogs and wish I could help all of them find loving homes. I was very excited to do the program they offered to anyone who would like to rent a dog for the day. Only $40 and they give you a bag filled with toys, treats, blanket, water and bowl. Everything you need to have a fun and time. What a kind and unselfish way to help the poor forgotten animals and to advertise them for someone to adopt them. They wear a special harness with the words adopt me! Fantastic ideal! I of course fell in love with this Beautiful little girl named Margie! Sweet, playful and gentle! I wish someone here would consider checking this place out and if able to adopt one of these many sweet dogs! Very sad to say goodbye but glad I did it! read more
