The boating skills were par none and getting up close with sea life and the caves and shoreline alike. Lala was already starting to brew and the waters were rough. Think rollercoaster-class 4 water rafting combined. Thrilling yet never feeling unsafe. This is a trip for anyone who truly appreciates nature and getting to see the remote NaPai coast. You park in the back lot, rent your kayaks, and they put them out on ramps leading into the river. You climb in with your gear (a dry bag is a good idea -- you can rent one from them if you don't have your own), and they launch you off. From there it's a picturesque, serene trip upriver to the wildlife sanctuary. We spotted lots of freshwater turtles lounging on branches near the shore, a few herons in the trees, and beautiful scenery the whole way up and back. Fantastic day out. We went the upriver route, but you can also head downriver to Hanalei Bay and back, which is a shorter trip and gives you the option of hanging out and swimming at Hanalei Beach. Don't forget to use ample sunblock and it's a great idea to have a long sleeved swim shirt, wide brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Bringing a towel to cover your legs is also a good idea. You are on top of the kayak in direct sun (or cloud cover UV rays) for 2-3 hours.

We came during off season in mid-January. It was cloudy and sunny, and there were no bugs. We took…read morethe 9:00a to 2:00pm tour. I think we got back to the retrieve our belongings at 1:30p. Our guide Kyle was amazing! Since it was off season, he took about 8 persons, 2 tandam kayaks. One guide can take 12 persons maximum. It was great that our group was smaller. The Wailua River is really serene and calm, so both persons forward paddle, versus the back person back paddling in more rapids like Colorado or Sacramento River. We paddled 1 mile to the hiking, and 1 mile back. My arms were a little sore afterwards. The highlight is the hike to the water fall, which is about 0.2 mi in, 0.2 mi out, however it took about 30-40 min one way. Some areas are bush whacking, river crossing (bring water shoes like Teva), some very muddy so you have to slow down, some have wood planks built. When you the to the waterfall, it is gorgeous, and we packed our own lunch to enjoy for about 30-40 minutes at the falls. There were no bugs as we went in mid-January. Morning tours are more cold, so bring a light wind jacket or rain jacket. Afternoon tours are warmer, but you risk having bugs and sunburn. Our guide Kyle, has been feeding this bird along the hiking path for 8 years. He is tame and will come for photos. I'm a bird feeder and watcher, so major kudos to Kyle! The scenery of the hike and kayak trip was surreal and will blow your mind. The photos don't do it justice. You will take a van from kayak launch at Wailua River about 3 minutes back to base camp. Kayak Wailua provides you a water proof bag for your belongings, and a cooler bag for your lunch. They also have a locker for other stuff you don't want to bring along. I love this alot, and the tamed wild bird was the big plus!

DRAMAMINE, y'all…read more You're choosing to do the Na'Pali coast from the North Shore, which means smaller boats, and choppier waves. I took one Dramamine, the night before. Then another, an hour before our departure. AND THE BOAT RIDE WAS GREAT. I was all smiles and adventure and breathing -in the ocean air and wind! Unlike, a few folks, who were NOT doing so well. (One or two barfed over the side, but thankfully I didn't notice. Know how your body handles boats and waves. Don't do tours like this, without proper prep. It will NOT be fun if you underestimate it.) Check-In staff was super friendly, and personal. They remembered me from my original email. Sweet. Parking was easy. Shuttles team was super friendly. The strangers we rode with, all turned out to be cool. 2 boats go out (mini-catamarans, with cover from the sun). They expertly traverse the waves, and cliffs, and the caves, giving you some amazing first-hand visuals and photos. But yeah, that boat will be a rockin', during those up-close cave moments. Spoiler: You probably won't see whales, unless you're there before May. But we DID see a cute pod of Dolphins, who cozy'd up to our boat for a while. Our boat had Casey and Spencer. They were wise beyond their years, in all things Kauai. Funny and friendly. Spencer navigated the heck out of those waves, while Casey handled the nauseous passengers with MOTHERLY CARE. Spencer was 50/50 on allowing us to snorkel, based on conditions and a previous scare, a few weeks prior. But he ultimately made the call to GET IN THE WATER. He wisely kept us on a leash (not literally), whistling at swimmers when they got too close to a reef (with waves that could wash you onto the reef). It was fun and chill. Saw a HUGE, MASSIVE KING DADDY SEA TURTLE. He did not enjoy us as much as we enjoyed him and he bounced. Followed by a JR. Turtle, who stuck around a bit longer. Tons of fish. Spencer & Casey gave us good food and hike recommendations, and everyone treated us like friends / family. Highly recommend this team if you're going out. And you already know I highly recommend some Dramamine.

The tour itself was both breathtakingly beautiful and informative, with lots of great history and a thorough knowledge of the coast's features. We were able to get in close to the cliffs and even go into a couple of sea caves. On the way back -- a very bouncy and splashy affair in the best way for those of us who were adventurous enough to sit in the bow -- we stopped at Tunnels Beach to snorkel the outer reef, which was full of tropical fish and turtles. The tour included lunch and refreshments as well. Overall a great way to spend an afternoon -- definitely a 5-star experience. A word to the wise-- the northwest corner of Kaua'i is often rainy and can get a bit cold when the wind is up, so not a bad idea to bring something extra to throw on after you finish the snorkel and are heading back to port.

With well over ten years of SUPing experience, we knew we didn't want to paddle up the river on…read morerecreational SUP boards. I sprung for two touring boards which turned out to be a good decision. Keylan was very professional and helpful answering all our questions. He showed us an aerial view of the river on his computer screen so we had a visual of where we were going before heading out. He set us up with two 4" x 4" foam "boards" which were placed on the car roof before loading the SUP boards. He provided us with straps to hold the boards securely up there for the very short drive (about five minutes) to the launching spot on the river. The paddle up the river and the hike to t he waterfall was definitely worth the effort. We did that first at Keylan's recommendation, then went to see Fern Grotto. Allow yourself lots of extra time for the return trip as you will be paddling into the wind which can be quite strong in certain areas. We had a great day thanks to Kauai SUP and Kayak. We went down to Anini beach and Fred brought us paddleboards and unloaded everything for us which…read morewas so convenient and low stress for our group. We just rented the boards and didn't do any instruction since we've all done a lot of paddleboarding. The beach was gorgeous and the water was really warm and clear so we saw a lot of fish, corals and urchins. The only downside for us was our reservation was during low tide and it was VERY low at the time and pretty windy! We had to be really careful navigating around reef so we didn't damage the reef or the boards. I would recommend doing a quick check of the tide tables before you make your reservation. There's also no cell service down where you meet your boards, so be sure your whole party knows where they are going.
