Came upon Kawa tonight and I'm so glad I did! I started with the miso soup--perfectly warm and flavorful. Then I tried the Millville Roll... oh my gosh, absolutely delicious! It was packed with three different kinds of fish, with more salmon draped over the top. Every bite was so fresh and satisfying. Since I hadn't eaten all day, I also ordered the Panang Curry. It came loaded with big slices of tender chicken and more veggies than I could count--seriously generous portions and so much flavor. I honestly don't understand why Kawa doesn't have better reviews, because my experience was excellent. The food was fresh, portions were big, and everything tasted amazing. Great takeout option in this area! I wouldn't necessarily think a place that sells Thai and sushi together would have the best sushi buy I was completely mistaken! Friends of mine vouched for this place and I'm so glad they did! We had a delicious sushi feast for 3 that was very satisfying. I started with the shrimp dumplings and my friends had the eggrolls. For sushi there was inari (for the vegan friend), and I ordered the green something or other roll that was wrapped in a green rice paper rather than the usual dark seaweed. Once we laid everything out on the dining table we all just shared everything - it was a perfect way to spend a nice evening inside with good friends now that all of us have been vaccinated! read more

This place is probably an underappreciated gem in Cumberland County. The combination of Thai, Japanese, and sushi makes for a good variety of options on the menu. There are a few vegetarian options. Not a great variety, but enough to satisfy the vegetarian in us or with us. There is a fair variety of seafood, which I appreciate. In my experience, the dishes labeled spicy on the menu aren't unpleasantly spicy. Maybe one word of warning: some of the dishes have oyster sauce. If you don't like fishy smells, you might be sure to avoid these, and maybe dissuade your dining companions from ordering these dishes as well. Just something that had come up before. read more

Kawa just opened this week. The restaurant is lovely inside. They have regular table seating, seating at the sushi bar, and then traditional floor and pit seating where you remove your shoes and sit on cushions. The servers are very attentive but aloof. The setting is asian/urban chic and very pleasant. I'm not a big fan of sushi and went to Kawa for Thai food, but I really enjoyed the sushi I had. As a matter of fact, I'd be more inclined to return for the sushi rather than the Thai. The Thai portions were small for the price and the food was only mediocre. Any of the hot foods that came from the kitchen were not really that great. All the meats I ordered were overcooked and tough. The flavors were good but not great. I have to disagree with Jeffrey's assertion that the Thai is authentic. It's not. It's a Japanese interpretation of Thai, and it's very lackluster. Despite the great ambiance, I won't go back. The Thai food was just not good enough. With a great Vietnamese place right next door, I don't know why I'd bother... it wasn't awful, but it just wasn't that good. Two and a half stars. read more

First impression are the most important, so far not impressed. Setting typical Asian restaurant, but the loud crappy pop music doesn't help the ambiance. First thing to the table are cold flavorless greasy noodles served with an equally disappointing duck sauce. How do you screw up duck sauce? No flavor just bland and sweet. After being in Tokyo and eating sushi and sashimi at the Tsukiji fish market a few weeks ago I think the bar has been raised a bit for sashimi for me. When the sashimi platter came out I was pleasantly surprised by the eloquent presentation of the different fish and shredded daikon. After mixing my wasabi and soy sauce to the thickness I prefer, I was delighted by the taste and temperature of the the first bite. If the fish is too cold you don't get to appreciate the full taste of the fish or the texture you should be experiencing either. As I progressed through the different selections,I was thoroughly impressed by how delicious the fish was. The wasabi had quite a kick to it which in my experience is hard to find anymore at restaurants. I would highly recommend this platter to any sashimi lover! read more

If you want a dish that is more along the normal stir fry path, without the heat, try the chicken and broccoli. I arrived early on a Friday night to place and pick up an order, so it was fast. Could be 5 stars if the customer service was better. Both times I ordered to go. People who aren't friendly shouldn't be in customer-facing roles. I went twice while I was traveling through the area. Neither time was I greeted. And when I picked up my to go order and said thank you, there was no "you're welcome" either time. The food is really good though. The place is clean and the menu is plentiful. If the business reads this review, I hope they take this seriously because bad customer service can ruin a business. Also, you never know who the person is who is visiting your establishment. Customer service should be a standard. If I'm ever back in the area, I'd likely try them again to see if they've implemented changes. If not, I'll cancel my order and go elsewhere with my money. Millville needs this restaurant since it's a small town with not much good food, so I hope they improve and sustain read more

Everybody there is friendly and we go there almost every week so everyone there knows us and we have nice conversation sometimes. They recognize us so you can tell they're pretty good at their job. Honestly the food is good I'm amazed how low the rating is on this place because they're so friendly in the food is good. First and last time ordering from here. Food was so bland and the portions were small. I had chicken teriyaki. The chicken was so dry and the teriyaki sauce was so oily and flavorless. The dish came with 2 small carrots, about 4 small dried out pieces of broccoli and some slimy onions. I don't know what kind of soup I got because it looked like sand in the bottom of a dirty lake.The salad and white rice were the most appetizing part of this meal. Sushi is subpar taste with oddly small volume rolls. Also ordered two different broad noodle dishes which were pretty much identical except one had scrambled eggs. The noodle dishes were okay (5/10). The beef in the dishes were tender, but they didn't give that much. The fresh vegetables in the noodle dishes were appreciated because they weren't fried and chopped fresh (they included zucchini, red bell pepper, and some onions). I've been here a few times without incident. The other day we go there and have a misunderstanding about the menu/ order. While attempting to correct the issue with staff, all that was received was a huge attitude. This was completely unprofessional and unexpected from an establishment that's been there for many years. One of the things that's makes a great place to spend your money is issue resolution which Kawa seems to lack. For this I say buyer beware and spend your money elsewhere. read more

This restaurant will be placed on the "never again" list. I went with my family since I heard a couple of people speaking good about it, but under my own experience it was to die for the exit door. First of all we walk in and it felt like we were not welcome. Two of the cooks and 2 of the waitresses were siting at one of the tables and all stared at us as if we didn't belong in. The waitress that served us did the minimal of effort... She would smile with the staff, but we had to actually call her over since she basically left us on our own... My party of four are natives of this area, however we're all NYC transplants. The food is poorer quality then the cheapest Thai delivery place anywhere north of Trenton! I went here with two business associates for dinner. Two of us were very disappointed. The other regretted recommending the restaurant. The Shumai seafood dumpling appetizer had a strange, almost off taste. The sauce it was served with simply had no flavor other than salt. My dish, the Bangkok Spicy Shrimp, was not nearly spicy enough though I asked for it as spicy as they could make it. The waitress smirked. It was spicy but did not live up to the three chilli claim of the menu, much less my request that they make it very spicy. It was flavorful and served in a crispy noodle basket. Despite the lack of heat it was the high mark of the meal. I ordered the green tea mochi ice cream for dessert. It was simply horrible. Mochi is my go to dessert at Sushi and Japanese restaurants and I love it. We also often have it in our freezer at home for a little guilty pleasure. My point is I know what it SHOULD be like. This mochi seemed freezer burned. it was mealy and nearly tasteless. What flavor it did have was very unpleasant. It left a terrible aftertaste after only one piece. I did not eat the rest of the serving. One of my dinner companions ordered the vanilla mochi and also had only one piece and simply said he did not care for it. The service was ok but the waitress did not know the menu and was given to making odd faces at us when we asked questions to which she did not know the answer.
