This year I went to Dr. Sera as she takes my insurance. I just let her do her thing about whole body healing with acupuncture and chiropractic. Some parts of the treatment can be a bit sensitive. My immediate injury was my right heel pain and shoulder from playing table tennis. But she was able to spot other issues and worked on straightening them out. I feel more energy than before the treatment and have improved the way I walk. I would say one needs to be patient with her holistic healing was it takes some time and sessions to get the body to align and feel whole again. The staff were very helpful in allowing me to get the appointment dates and times that suited me. And I also shared my love of the guitar with Dr. Sera who is a very talented musician herself. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Sera for almost one year, during this past year my health has improved greatly. I have been suffering with severe asthma and a chronic cough for years. I have improved so much that my friends, family and co-workers have noticed a big difference. I used to make frequent trips to the ER or Urgent Care (two or three times a week!!) During the last 12 months I have made only two trips. I feel more energetic than ever. I am so happy that I found Dr. Sera. I recommend her highly. I am a patient of Dr Sera's and she is an excellent chiropractor. She can adjust any joint in my spine so easily and I always feel better leaving her office. I am very knowledgeable in medical billing and Monica G's review appears to be mistaken and unfounded. Copying an insurance card is standard office procedure. Whether you are a cash or insurance patient, the information is a part of the medical file. By California law it is absolutely okay to have a cash discount rate especially for a financial hardship. It has nothing to do with Medicare rates. Ask 10 different chiropractors (or any other type of doctor) their cash fee and you'll get 10 different answers. I was thankful I could afford to see her with the student rate she offered me. As for billing insurance for someone with a high deductible, it looks like Dr. Sera did Monica G a favor. A deductible is the amount each year the patient needs to pay doctors before the insurance company kicks in and starts paying. If the deductible is not met and the Dr takes the time to bill the insurance, she doesn't get paid anything but helps the patient get closer to meeting her deductible. If this was the case the doctor didn't do anything out of the ordinary except help the patient. If Monica G had a health savings account (HSA) then why didn't she inform the doctor or office manager of this and why would the patient want to be a cash patient if there was some form of coverage? I would highly recommend Dr. Sera. She is very caring and can make the time for same day appointments if needed. read more

Dr. Sera could be described in three words; i.e.:The ultimate therapist. But there's more to her than just that. She is professional, knowlegable, thourough, gentle and an effective practitioner. A mechanic with all the repair manuals for my mind and body. An herbalist, an energetic person and, in my opinion, a healer in general. I've been receiving treatments from Dr. Sera for almost 2 years now. She has successfully corrected the trigger-finger on my right middle finger after only 3 treatments of acupuncture. Very impressive considering I was wearing a splint for almost a solid year with no results. Additionally, and recently, Dr. Sera has suppressed my urge to smoke, almost completely. The reduction of my urge to smoke was obvious after the very first treatment of acupuncture. After about 6 treatments I have reduced my smoking by 80%. Extremely impressive considering the fact that I have been smoking for 33 years. Her chiropractic skills are wonderful. In the past I have experienced discomfort (up to an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10) in my right shoulder. Prior to meeting Dr. Sera, the discomfort would sometines last for a period of up to 9 months. After receiving about 8 to 10 adjustments from Dr. Sera, discomfort in my shoulder occurs maybe once a month for a day or two at most. I've had a phobia of needles since I was born. With the combination of patience and energetic techniques (I believe), Dr. Sera cured my phobia and made it possible for me to enjoy the benefits of her acupuncture and chiropractic healing techniques. Not only do her treatments work, they are far cheaper than any hospital facility. She accepts credit cards, too, which is very convenient. Five stars for Dr. Kay Sera. While Dr. Sera's bedside manner was good, it was obvious that she was still learning acupuncture (since she was reading the needle placement out of the book), this review is solely for her BILLING practices. The first and ONLY time I ever went to Dr. Sera (after being referred by my aunt and sister, who paid cash rates as well). I came in AFTER explaining that I wasn't sure if my insurance would cover the charges. Dr. Sera explained that she could see me as a CASH PATIENT. Her biller/receptionist took my insurance card and verified that I had a high deductible so I was established as a CASH PATIENT. I paid for my visit up front, and thought that this would be the end of it. I work in the medical billing industry and KNOW that once you establish a patient as "Cash" you can't turn around and bill the insurance, especially AFTER the patient has paid up front; this is considered double billing and is ILLEGAL. Well, guess what her billing person did?! Two weeks went by and I was planning on making another visit to Dr. Sera when I get an EOB in the mail...to my astonishment I realized that not only had Dr. Sera's biller verified my insurance eligibility but ALSO taken a copy of my card and proceeded to bill my insurance AFTER I had already paid for the services up front! I immediately called Dr. Sera and expressed my disappointment and disgust for this type of business practice and demanded a refund of MY credit card payment. She seemed surprised and shocked when I explained that this type of billing practice was not only unethical but illegal. I made a formal complaint with my insurance company as well. I got my refund in 3 days, but the fact that my insurance HSA account paid over 4 times what I was charged as a cash rate patient left me with no other conclusion but to accuse her of doing so for monetary gain. She denied this, of course, but (as I demanded) why would the biller even MAKE a copy of my card if I was being established as a cash patient?! Since this incident happened I can no longer recommend her to ANYONE I know (plus she charges 2 different cash rates, how she decides which to charge to whom is a baffler to me, being that cash rates are based on Medicare's standard rates and those are very black and white...) That being said, She has a good bedside manner but is still learning the treatments, plus she has VERY questionable billing practices. I cannot recommend her at all. The star is only for her bedside manner. read more

I walked into her clinic without an appointment and received the best care. I have seen three other chiropractors prior and she is the best by far. She adjusted my back with her special techniques. The achy pressure in my mid upper back was immediately gone. In preparation for the adjustment, she applies heat and briefly massages the area with a large massager, which others usually do not do without additional fees. I paid $35 for an adjustment, history and mini physical. She even took a manual blood pressure and gave me good advice. She uses a hollistic approach to good health. So worth the money! Insurance or not, spend a few dollars. It's great service and cheaper than getting a full body massage. Another chiropractor nearby charged more than twice her rates and I only had an adjustment. Even if her rates increase, I wouldn't go anywhere else. I hope she stays in business for many more years because I have not seen another chiropractor as wonderful as she is. read more

I need to defend Dr. Kay. She's one of my all time favorites, and was so good to me about 20 years ago, when she was just out of chiropractic college, and starting her practice. I'm sorry for the person who wrote the negative review on her billing experience, but what that person said, just doesn't sound like Dr. Sera. I work in the medical records field, too, Often a doctor works on a different plane than the billing person does. Insurance and billing can be so complex with all the insurance machinations and requirements, so the doctors often focus on direct patient care, while leaving the billing issues to their staff persons. It could be the billing person did her insurance billing proceedure by rote habit. It could be there was a mis-communication between parties on what the issue was. It could be Dr. Sera wasn't in the loop with the billing foul-up. Insurance companies can be the culprits in situations like these....they often have such a habit of doing things backwards, that their logistics can throw curves at even the best-intentioned doctor and/or insurance biller. At any rate, I needed to speak a few words in Dr. Sera's defense. read more
