Don't Use this place. I took a brand new formal dress there to get hem and other alterations, the lady owner is not professional at all. The alterations look like they were done by a preschooler, also they stained my dress in different places. Very cheap work, she ruined my dress.. Horrible work, service and very expensive for a small job! Had to take the dress back after a simple hem because the work had multiple issues and a small stain! When I called to see if I could have the issues taken care of, the guy who answered obviously couldn't understand me and only spoke with grunts. Absolutely Worthless Took my jacket in that needed to have a zipper replaced. When I first brought it in I spoke with Kay or whomever the owner is, and they assured me they would have my jacket finished in a week, and if they didn't have the zippers there then they would go buy them and charge them after. When I went to pick up my jacket, the owner wasn't there and the lady there said that my jacket wasn't done and they couldn't help because they didn't have the zipper. WHAT? So they sat on my jacket for a week, after telling me it would be ready and they would buy the zipper, only to tell me then that they didn't do anything on my jacket because "we don't have zipper". Oh and I couldn't talk to the owner about why the zipper didn't get ordered, because they weren't in town until another 2 weeks. I went here after having a bad experience at Rivers tailor and I have to say that all the alterations/tailor shops on Grand Ave are fucking idiots who shouldn't be running a business. read more

Don't underestimate this mom and pop shop! I've been coming here for the last 2-3 years and I've been happy with my alterations/tailors every time. Maria, the owner who I call Auntie, because she treats me like family. When ever I bring something in she does a great job with all my clothing, especially suits. I wear suits all the time for work and she understands the fitted/modern look so I don't have to explain much, and if I have questions she answers them professionally and gives her advice on what I should do. If I am ever unhappy with a way something turned out...I simply tell her and she fixes it, usually right away if it's minor. There has been many times where I needed something the day of and I know she doesn't like that but she always is accommodating and understanding. I honestly think if you give her a chance and she understands what you want you will be happy. It's like going to a new barber...they most likely wont get your style of cut right away, but if you keep going to that same barber they will understand and how to work with your hair and this is how I think Maria works. Don't be fooled with all the negative reviews. I've been all over for a good Tailor and Maria is my go-to. Open up to her and she will open up to you. =) read more

They were great at hemming my wedding dress! It had a really difficult cut, plus it had beads that they had to secure and cut. They did an Awesome job. My dress had these flowing pleats at the bottom and those are really hard to get it to look straight and they killed it!!! I love working with small businesses and this one is great! read more

This place is great! It's a small place which means they'll give you the attention you deserve. I was helped by Naty and she is wonderful. I brought in some pants to be hemmed. I also requested that the pants be made slimmer as well to go with the more modern/slim fitting suits that are so hot right now. lol. They have a lot of experience with altering suits and can even make custom suits for you. If you've got a nice suit, but it doesn't fit exactly how you like, come here and they'll make it and you look good! read more

This year I went back again to have another bridesmaid dress altered. I went to pick it up this weekend and discovered the top was still way too big. I took it back and was told the owner was in the Philippines and there was nothing they could do. They said when she gets back (2 weeks AFTER the wedding) she would fix it for me. I demanded my money back but was told I would have to wait until the owner was back. They didn't have anyone there who could fix this for me. I ended up having to take it somewhere else and paying AGAIN to fix the problem. The new place had to take it in 3-4 inches!!! I will be going back when she is in town and get my money back but from the other reviews it looks like I will be out of luck! read more

DO NOT USE. I went in to get a suit cut to my preference, I like them to fit a bit on the skinny side, so I told her exactly what I wanted during my fitting. All of this was only supposed to cost $90. I was really excited that I had found somewhere new and cheaper to get my suits cut. So you can imagine my disappointment when she didn't do any of that, I asked her to make my pants skinny all the way through and she barely pulled in the thighs, while leaving the lower leg area completely flared out. And I asked her to cut my jacket to me back, she cut the top part of my jacket in, and the rest dropped off me like an ill fitting bath robe. And when I said it wasn't what I wanted she got super defensive telling me that was exactly what I had said. False, I would not have asked for a Red Skelton hobo suit. And then she wanted to charge me $60 extra to make it how I wanted it in the first place. So I left it with her and let her deal with it. A few weeks later she calls me screaming at me to come get my suit, saying that I have to pick it up and pay for it, even though in her shop there is a sign that says "items left for more than 30 days will be discarded." I told her I wasn't paying for something I wouldn't wear, and that was about the last word I got in the conversation as she proceeded to call me a liar and tell me I had to pick it up. When I refused she told me she would see me in court, screamed and yelled some more, then hung up. Worst tailor I have ever used, worst customer service. I understand a bad fitting suit, I don't understand terrible customer service. Save yourself some trouble and stay away from this looney bin. You get what you pay for. read more

She fixed my pants when i needed them for a wedding the next day. Waist was too big thats my biggest curse for being skinny. That pants can never fit my waist. Went in at 10am and i picked them up at 3pm. The place smells good. Smells like old. Kinda like walking into an old attic and finding treasures. I've never been in an attic with treasures but i imagine thats how it would smell. Like dust and old. Very nice lady. She knew her stuff. $16 for fixing up thr waist was a little steep for my blood cause im used to the mexican swap meet prices but for a last minute thing i didn't care. She does wedding dresses too. Will be back cause its close my home and on the way to work. Man that place smelled good! Go in there at least just to smell the place. Sniff sniff. read more

Watch Out!! I left a pair of pants for alteration. Kay lost them! She refuses to work it out with me. It was a $100 pair of pants and now I'll have to sue her to get my money back. She speaks good English when taking your money...not so good when you want your pants back! read more

Grand Avenue in Downtown Escondido has certainly seen a number of changes as far as businesses go in the last few years. People always coming and going, but one place that has remained a constant is Kay's Alterations. Though there are quite a few alterations and tailoring shops in downtown, Kay's has high marks on customer service and dependability. The customers of Kay's Alterations definitely keep owner Natividad and her employees busy. As I photographed the business they stayed concentrated on their work meeting deadlines for customers. As I looked around the shop, they had everything from seat cushions to karate uniforms to slacks and dresses all waiting to be mended or altered. The walls are full of multicolor thread, and the sewing machines are ready to be worked for whatever task is at hand. Apart from the usual alterations they perform, they also do restyling of clothing, custom dress making, tailoring, alterations for formal wear and bridal wear. You can see by the awards for service hung proudly on the walls that they are vital to the community and are respected by their customers and neighbors. read more
