We had lunch at The Galley Hatch and picked up a Birthday Cake at Kay's on the way out. I was a bit taken aback when I was told that it was $48 for the 8" Vanilla Cake. It looked like it had been nicely decorated so I went ahead and bought it in the hopes that it would taste as good as it looked. Unfortunately, that was not really the case. While it was a decent enough cake, it was more on the level of a refrigerated, store bought cake that you might pick up at the local supermarket. The Cake itself wasn't really fresh and felt and tasted as though it had spent some time in a refrigerator. The frosting was likewise not fresh tasting and had a greasy taste and texture. The decorative roses, which I felt might have justified some of the cost as they looked quite elegant and artistic, were not actually handmade from the icing. Rather, they were the hard, sugar ones that you pick up at the store. All in all, quite a disappointment and not the Birthday treat that we had hoped for. read more

If I could give it a ZERO, I would. Do not eat anything here. We went in and there were everywhere. And I dont mean a few flies, I mean tons of them. The tables were dirty, the people working there ignored us but while they were ignoring everyone, we were noticing the flies. If there are that many flies in the seating area, then they are going to be in the very open kitchen too. I would never eat anything from a restaurant that doesn't do anything to mitigate the flies. And if there are flies, there are other bugs too. Do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

Unexpectedly Popped in after a visit to Galley Hatch and was blown away by the visual look of the desserts. Omg, those creme puffs!!! They were all so good looking but all I've eaten so far was a chocolate topped creme puff and it was one of the best ive ever had. Yum. The staff was eager to help and were all very pleasant. It's a cafe bakery. Unfortunately the food and drink is just ok. The service was incredibly slow and overpriced. Made me late to work because it took 20 minutes for a coffee and a croissant warmed up. Do not reccomend. Better off going to Starbucks unfortunately. read more

We stopped in for takeout since we had the dog with us so we figured we'd nosh on out items in the pocket park nearby. Great eclair with real pate a choux and patisserie cream. We also enjoyed a piece of the orange cake which tasted a bit like cake with creamsicle-flavored custard. Both were fresh and generous in size. We also got a 20 oz cappuccino. These three items set us back $16 so we made out ok for the quality but it is not a bargain. Service was a bit slow even though I was the only customer at the counter at the time. We love Kay's! I come at least a couple times a week, either with my family for breakfast, or to grab a coffee and sit and do some work on my laptop. They offer free wifi and have plenty of spaces out seating, so it's a great little spot for those of us that need a space outside the house to work. Kay's offers a variety of real (not microwaved) egg sandwiches, scrambles, pastries, espresso and coffee. My personal go-to is the Greek scrambler, which is scrambled eggs with tomato, fresh spinach and feta cheese. Their coffee is super strong, which is great, and they always carry a least a couple brewed flavors. My husband enjoys their homemade quiche, which come with a generous portion of fresh fruit. The staff is always so friendly and pleasant, and my daughter looks forward to visiting them all. Definitely check out Kay's if you're in town! read more

We have been going to Kays for years. It has been a local favorite and go to for delicious desserts with a lot of choices, enough to please everyone. Seating is comfortable and relaxed. Coffee is completely mediocre and rarely hot. As other reviews have mentioned, the service staff is so unhappy. They refuse to smile and act as though you are bothering them. It's no longer a pleasant experience. Please, please tell us that the attitude of the staff will change. Like most patrons, it's nice to see smiling staff. Gone are those days at Kays. read more

The hot chai tea latte tasted like watery milk with a hint of spicy chai, and was cool when I got it. (Not good). The Lemon square was very nice and buttery and the eclairs is amazing. The environment is beautiful and the staff very friendly. I wouldn't buy a latte from there again though. read more

As I walked into the cafe, I thought 'this is great' - warm, comfortable, inviting atmosphere ... aromas of something yummy wafting in the air. Great place to enjoy a relaxing coffee on a grey, rainy, chilly Seacoast morning. I looked at the menu and ordered a large cafe au lait and a Greek scrambler (eggs, spinach, tomato, feta) and waited with anticipation. The staffperson grabbed a large coffee cup and told me she would 'fill it with milk' and then I could 'add coffee from the coffee bar' .... not like any other cafe au lait I've ever ordered, but I am new here, so I swallowed my misgivings and said thank you .... she handed me a 20 ounce cup filled with 17 ounces of foam .... which I then spooned into the trash can ... I was, literally, left with a dribble of steamed milk .... I added French Roast coffee to my virtually empty cup, and honestly, the entire container of cream could not correct the bitterness. Reluctantly I moved to find a table as my name was called for my egg order. It looked delicious and smelled great. I was disappointed it did not come with an accompanying piece of toast but I found later on the menu board you could add toast/muffin/bun for 0.50 which I would have done had I noticed (not their fault - but, staff person who took my order never asked either - so upsale error on their part). I sat in a comfortable corner and started to eat. The scrambled eggs were hard - overcooked - and without flavor. The small amount of feta that was actually there, melted with some spinach, was tasty .... had the eggs not been so overdone and a bit more feta melted into mix, with maybe a sprinkle of feta over top at serving, this would have been delicious. It was not, so quite disappointing. I ordered a couple of croissants to go ... the almond croissant was over baked to point of being burned ... the plain croissant was ok .... overall this was a disappointment on a grand level.
