Our experience at Kazahana was absolutely fantastic and has officially made it our favorite sushi spot in Telluride. As newcomers to town from Los Angeles, we have high standards for sushi and service--and Kazahana exceeded them on every level. The atmosphere is cozy yet polished, striking the perfect balance between warm and professional. It feels intimate without being stuffy, and relaxed while still clearly serious about quality. A huge highlight of the night was our charming bartender, Ivonne from Argentina. She made the best whiskey sour I've ever had--perfectly balanced and unforgettable. Ivonne also introduced us to some truly high-quality sake, and it was clear she really knows her craft. Her knowledge, confidence, and friendly personality elevated the entire experience. The food was exceptional. We enjoyed the gazpacho, which was refreshing and beautifully prepared, along with the umi (sea urchin) and hamachi sashimi--all incredibly fresh, clean, and expertly presented. Every bite confirmed we were somewhere special. We feel so lucky to have found Kazahana so soon after moving to Telluride. It's rare to find a place that nails atmosphere, drinks, service, and food so effortlessly. We'll absolutely be regulars and can't wait to come back again soon. read more

Came here during a trip to Telluride and booked this restaurant for our final dinner in town. We loved the ambiance, especially being led to this secluded sushi bar in the bottom and way back of the restaurant. It elevated the overall experience. The server and chef were knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional. I enjoyed each course, and my favorites were the fried scallop, black cod, and nigiri with uni and caviar. My only complaint is the rice was cold for all of the nigiri courses. Price tag is $200, and there is a 4% employee health charge on top, so it comes out to nearly $300 with tip. read more

We had a great experience, mainly because Kevin, our bartender was super helpful with the menu and very friendly. We did not have a reservations, but they were able to seat us at the bar, which was lovely. The atmosphere is really nice, clean, classy, and it was fun to watch the chef make our sushi. I understand we were up in the mountains in tourist land where fish was probably hard to import but it was obvious this was a money gouging establishment. The food was decent but I've had better sushi in Denver for a FRACTION of the cost. We had a table of four and we had a couple drinks, and all of these rolls you see pictured. We dined on a winter Monday not knowing if/when their fresh deliveries were. Everything we ate was very delicious and fresh. The salmon sashimi were nice size chef cuts. The yellowtail was particularly excellent. We ordered 2 soft shell crab rolls (different) and the chef's special with a little mild onion on top was the stand out (both excellent to be clear). We both started with a spinach miso which was perfectly prepared with plenty of spinach and far from salty. Very nice meal in a difficult to reach ski town. I enjoyed a very nice cold sake glass as well. Worst thing you can say which of course we expect was the $$$$ and the insulting 4% blah blah blah added charge which it seems all of the better Telluride restaurants add. I resent it. Charge what you want up front in your food cost but don't nickel and dime your "guests" and then ask for another 20-25% tip for the exact same purpose. We had an interesting unplanned visit dinner at Kazahana and were positively surprised. Fresh toro flown from Japan with a Japanese sushi chef who was part of the Nobu founding team. There is a lot to love here. The fish is fresh and the presentation is authentic. The Ottoro was to die for. The service was attentive and to the point. The ambiance is feutre, sophisticated with a touch of zen inspiration. We plan to be back for the Omakase (Japanese: お任せ,) which is a Japanese phrase, used when ordering food in restaurants, that means 'I'll leave it up to the sushi chef (from Japanese 'to entrust' (任せる, makaseru). We recommend this restaurant as part of the ought to visit for the HBS wine and Cuisine society! A note of disappointment we were there for a birthday and nothing was done for it. The atmosphere is modern and warm and we quickly had drinks In place to begin our dinner.The waiter was very polite and very knowledgeable of the menu and was happy to direct some items. After the first few bites, the wife and I looked at each other and we knew we were in trouble the 6 pieces of nigiri sushi was devoured in was seemed to be a nanosecond.I said trouble earlier,well meaning,,, that after those first bites I knew I would be buying way more sushi, and we did. This meal was excellent, the sushi was fresh and delicately prepared. We watched K construct the dishes with the hands of an obvious master of his craft. Spoke during our meal with K and learned he has been making sushi for over 25 years. Man's a genius with fish and a blade. We'll be back soon, like tomorrow. Service was excellent as well. Excellent meal! The veggie risotto was a surprising gem-must get one of their risottos. The sushi was excellent. The fish tasted sweet and fresh across multiple rolls and sashimis. Vegetable gyoza came out steamed (vs pan fried) and tasted like store-bought frozen ones. Spinach tofu Gomae was gross. Very possibly the worst sushi I've ever had (including grocery store rolls). Well I'll say it started out a little rocky but to be fair I actually didn't check the menu until same day. When I realized it was a traditional Japanese restaurant I freaked. I don't do raw. Tried to cancel but with the $85 per person reservation that wasn't an option. They promised they would accommodate and that there would be plenty of cooked options. The menu is really incredible. Many many options for folks who can't do raw. We had edamame, the pork Gyoza, and I ordered the chili shrimp. My boyfriend had the hamachi jalapeño sashimi and spicy tuna roll. He thought the sushi was delicious and he's a bit of a sushi snob so I'm guessing it was good. If you're worried just ask them what's fresh. I highly recommend the shrimp chili. Lots of flavors, tons of shrimp (maybe too many!?) and there were good veggies with it. The best part was they acknowledged the rocky start and brought us a matcha tiramisu which was out of this world. The atmosphere is great downstairs. Don't be bummed if they take you downstairs bc that's where you want to be. The staff are pros. They will take care of you. The food is shockingly sub-par and on many levels, worse than your average sushi bars. Even though they are trying to be up-leveled. Their maki roles are terrible--totally uninteresting and lacking in flavor. This was unanimous by our group. They don't even know how to properly cook the sushi rice (ours was over cooked) or add vinegar for flavor. The prices are absurdly expensive for what they deliver. This is the newest sushi restaurant in Telluride. It is extremely authentic and definitely not a traditional American Sushi experience. There isn't a menu posted online, so I had to give you the scoop. We brought our 4 kids and I would say, if your kids aren't into real sushi, then bring some chicken nuggets in your purse. My kids ordered the shrimp tempura (request sauce on the side), and they made a custom roll for one of my girls and the salmon sashimi is amazing. Truth be told, we think this is more of an adult dining experience, but if you are dead-set on trying it (like me), you can bring the kids. The black cod is absolutely to die for, as good as Nobu in NYC. The lobster was covered in a spicy creamy sauce and you couldn't enjoy the meat. Been disappointed in this place 3 visits in a row and not by the food, the service. Our last and final time we plan on visiting this restaurant was a few days ago when they were not busy.. every other restaurant in town was slammed but this place was slow.. hmm wonder why. So we get seated at the sushi bar and no one comes to greet us for 20 mins meanwhile there is a server talking to the guests next to us and is assisting them, sushi chefs behind the counter cutting up. No one brought us water, asked for a drink order... so the sushi chefs let us order a sushi roll. We get our food at 20 minutes of. Wing there and STILL have not been greeted. When we finally asked the server serving the guests next to us for water she says "I'm not your server, the bar tender is". Absolutely unacceptable answer. So we decide to leave and not dine here and ask to pay for the roll and leave immediately. Instead of printing our check, the server starts entering the long dinner order for her guests instead of assisting us in getting out of there. The restaurant was NOT busy. And this is our 3rd time receiving poor service here. There is also a lack of understanding the menu on the server side as they just try to push blue fin tuna on everyone claiming it's the best. I've worked in sushi restaurants for years... The menu is also selling don buris as chirachis. I'm not interested in spending so much money to come here and be sitting there mad that we aren't even able to order or have any communication with the staff. We will not be returning read more
