Tucked away in the side parking lot of Albertsons, Akami is a tiny, unassuming spot serving some of the best Japanese food we've had--and quite possibly the best poke bowl I've ever eaten. Been meaning to come here for a while and so glad we finally did. We ordered the "I Love Mango" poke bowl, Tonkotsu Ramen, gyoza, and sushi, and every single dish was outstanding. There wasn't a bite left on the table. The poke was incredibly fresh and flavorful, the ramen was rich and comforting, the gyoza were perfectly cooked, and the sushi was excellent. What really made the experience even better was the staff. Everyone was genuinely warm, welcoming, and happy to help, creating a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Durango has a hidden gem, and Akami deserves every bit of the praise. We'll absolutely be back. read more

I was frustrated to discover a 2.70% takeout fee that was not disclosed on the online menu, the takeout menu, or the menu plastered on the door!!! If you're going to charge an extra fee, it should be clearly stated before customers order. Transparency about additional charges before customers order is basic respect and something customers expect! When I asked about the fee , Daivyd H (cashier) asked rudely "Is it a problem"? *Photos of : receipt that shows the fee underlined in red , and the Shoyu Ramen The portion size was great for the price, the presentation was excellent, and the flavors were outstanding. Everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and thoughtfully prepared. The balance of flavors really stood out, and it was clear that care went into both the taste and the presentation of the food. My order was also prepared in a timely manner. I've eaten at many restaurants in Durango and haven't encountered this kind of undisclosed fee elsewhere. The food was delicious, but hidden fees made for a bad first impression. Overall, I'd give the service a 3/5 for the rudeness , and hidden & undisclosed fee. Tucked away in a grocery store parking lot and cobbled together by a couple buildings, you will find a great Japanese restaurant. Offering ramen, poke, and sushi has a large menu with something for everyone. Was with the kids on this visit so ordered a miso for the boy, a chicken ramen for the girl and a couple apps which all went down very quickly. The shishito peppers are excellent with a vibrant display of colors ranging from the bright green of the peppers to the pink of the chopped ginger. Delicious ramen - just what we needed on a gloomy, rainy day. We ordered takeout and enjoyed it so much that we came back to eat in person! The space is small with a few tables and bar seating inside and some outdoor patio tables. I had the miso ramen both times and thought it had the perfect amount of umami; the pork belly was so tender as well. My husband tried the chicken house ramen, the tonkotsu ramen, and the crispy tuna. It's a small restaurant, seating inside and outside. The staff were very courteous. The place is clean but only has a few inside tables. We chose to eat inside. It didn't take long for our food to arrive. I ordered a build your own Poke bowl and had a list of ingredients to choose from. I chose sushi rice, cucumber, seaweed salad, ahi tuna, mango and fried onions (crunchies for on top) and teriyaki sauce. It was so freaking good!! My meal came with a small bowl of miso soup and there was real flavor to it. A lot of the time some of the places we go to had a watered down version but this one was really good. Finally tried this place on my last night in Durango after having multiple locals rave about it! I like the fact that it was super convenient for me as I have a disability and was staying at the nearby hotel. Unfortunately I can't agree with the locals who recommended the spot as well as all the people on here that are raving about the place . I ordered the spicy tuna roll as well as the spicy chicken Ramen a.k.a. the house, Ramen and it taste like what you would think a Japanese restaurant would taste like in Southwestern Colorado. It's not horrible ...just edible . The spicy tuna roll had a weid aftertaste from the spicy Mahon ... and although the rice was the right texture it did not have the best flavor profile / was vey plain . The chicken in my Ramen was super dry and the broth was mid ( lacked complexity) . If you have had the privilege of living in a community with a big representation of Japanese people and subsequently the privilege of being able to try many iterations of popular Japanese dishes, like sushi ( rolls and nigiri ) and Ramen... this place is going to fall short. I understand that it's not necessarily due to the recipe, however more so just the availability of ingredients from Japan. It's very easy for restaurant owners to get ingredients, even including fish from Japan for their sushi restaurants in California where I'm from. I understand this is not as possible and or feasible economically for a restaurant in middle America . In short, if you are Japanese / Japanese American ... or come from communities that have a high representation and really authentic food. This place is may not be for you. However, if you don't like spicy food and are from different community, you actually might like this place./ it might be up your alley and I recommend giving it a try!!! read more

Delicious Asian fare in a hip vibe. It is counter service for ordering yet they bring the food to your table and bring water refills so it is a bit of a hybrid in my book. They have interesting specials every day - not so much in price but in new ideas they come up with to see how people like them. The pot stickers/gyoza had a super thin skin and flavorful filling. I had driven by this place several times going to Albertson's. I finally decided to grab some carry out to see if it was any good. My husband and I were both thrilled with our poke bowls! I ordered the salmon poke bowl and he did the "build your own." It was ready in 5 minutes! Super fresh with great flavor at a reasonable price. The place only has a couple of tables during the winter months, so you might want to be prepared to take your food to-go. The place is pretty basic inside, but it is clean. Super authentic, flavorful broth, tender white meat chicken, lots of noodles and vegetables. We walked in and they were packed this particular night given that it was near the holidays, we ordered and they were upfront about the anticipated longer than expected wait but that was fine for us. We sat down and our food came faster than anticipated. Which was absolutely fantastic. The reason I'm writing this review is because the owner (I didn't get his name) was so polite and kind and felt badly that we had to wait and he decided to send a refund to us. That was unexpected act of kindness that is rare to experience these days. My last stop of my most recent Colorado trip was in Durango. Saw this little restaurant on the side of the Albertsons parking lot and saw pics of the pork belly steamed buns. I had to try them! Sadly they were out of steamed buns, but everything I had was still very delicious. I got an order of gyoza and the tonkatsu ramen. Nicely cooked, good flavor, good price, good combination! The gyoza had a nice little crisp to them and the filling was tender and tasty. The ramen had nice ingredients mixed into a delicious broth. Service was fast and friendly and although the ambiance of the parking lot was not the best, the weather was beautiful. I will definitely stop by here again the next time I stop in Durango. read more

Found this place eight next to Albertsons in a shopping plaza. Next to a rafting shop and nearly hidden but what a great find! Place was nice and cool since it was blazing hot in Durango this day. Started with some appetizer which included chicken kara-age, gyoza, and pork belly steam buns. First we got the gyoza which was pan fried and really came out fast so don't know if it was already made ahead. Typical gyoza not great. Next we got the chicken kara-age which I really enjoyed it had the right amount if glaze and crispness that woke up my taste buds. We also got some pork belly steam buns which I wanted to try because I has some awesome ones before and this was just average. We also ordered a salmon poke bowl. My daughter enjoyed her poke bowl. We also had a tempura shrimp sushi roll which by this time I had my fill of the chicken kara-age . So we packed up some items for takeout. Overall great place with different options and affordable. I have the spicy tuna crispy rice (my all time favorite), potstickers, chicken kara~age, steamed buns, tonkatsu ramen(yum) with extra broth. There's a nice selection and I'm totally addicted to this place. Customer service is great and the food is always consistent and right on the mark. I've been traveling a lot to Durango for work, and Akami has become one of my go to places for take out. They have great vegetarian options, and a wide variety of different foods to try. They also have a sweet potato sushi roll, which is my absolute favorite and really hard to find! They have a ton of ramen options and you can build your own ramen bowl. The food has always been good quality and I haven't had anything I didn't like! They have limited seating, but they do have both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor patio is really nice when the weather is warm. There can be a wait time when it's busy, but has never been too long. It's hard to miss since it's off of Albertson's parking lot, but definitely worth a visit! read more

Truly bizarre counter and seating layout inside and there's always a cold draft by the south windows so bring a jacket if you come in the winter. Also, the hours are a little weird so check before you come. But the food is great. I've tried most of the ramen and udon dishes on the menu and even a couple of the poke bowls and have never been disappointed. And the Brussels sprouts chips are a standout.
