Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... It took me about a month to get here. The heavy rains during the past two weeks were an obstacle, and they were closed a couple of weeks before that. I've been just aiming to visit on Saturdays - even though i realized that they're open for dinner on Fridays. The venue is a Japanese temple. It's so quaint and old school... very cool! The restroom is convenient; the environment is clean; and the parking is free! Service is kind, polite, friendly, and thoughtful! Here lives the Aloha Spirit! Of course, I had to order the Waffle Dog. (It reminds me of small kid time when my dad would get Waffle Dogs for mom, me, and my three sisters!) I added my condiments at the self-service area. I also had the Hamburger Steak Bowl... delicious! Gravy was tasty, burger was homemade, hot dog added color, onions added some crunch, broccoli added the healthy factor, and rice was cooked just right! Prices include tax. Cheeehu, thank you for the comfort food! Saturday 2/28, ... found parking at Shingon Mission. Follow the Christmas Lights.. adds charm Was greeted w/ a smile, and a Howzit. Made you feel welcome. The staff was wonderful, took our order, we sat down.. got our utensils... mine was Saimin no Green Onion, soup was good, better than some places. Hamburger was good too, thin layer of Swiss cheese (who does that, these guys) Ppl kept coming in.. for good eats! KC Waffle Dog was featured by another Yelper and quickly bookmarked. Have a lot of great memories of KC Drive-Inn's original location in Waikiki from small kid-time, and their subsequent location in Kapahulu near Harding Ave. This KWD is a pop up at the Shingon Mission on Sheridan St Fridays (5-9 pm) and Saturdays (10 am - 2 pm). When their KWD sign is posted, they're open. Snaking through the center of the mission, I quickly found KWD in the cafeteria. Their menu is pretty basic (waffle dogs, burgers, saimin, ono ono shakes, coffee, soda), but nothing over $10 (except the burger/saimin combo, which at $14, is $2 less than the items separately)! Quickly ordered and got my food. The burger was tasty, a good home made patty with some filler. Had to take a bite of the waffle dog, the smell and the taste brought back a lot of great memories at their old locations. Took most of the waffle dog home and it tasted a lot better with some time in an air fryer! Good food, great prices, a lot of nostalgia for us old futs! Will repeat soon to eat through the rest of the menu, and highly recommend! read more

Comfort(ing Nostalgia) and (Pure) Joy Sorry...it's holiday time! Ask me about my visit to the new KC Drive Inn, and I will smile and tell you...nostalgia and joy. You dont need to have eaten at the original KC to feel the nostalgia, because every item on this menu will speak to you on some level... Waffle dog with Chow Chow sauce Teri beef sandwich Saimin and Hamburger combo Ono Ono shake It brings back memories of being a kid...no matter where you're from or how old you are. All of it was delicious...all of it! The waffle dog was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We like to peel off the crispy bits and eat it with the Chow Chow sauce. Anyone else feel like the sauce reminds you of tartar sauce? The teri beef sandwich I didnt get any of ....because my wife ate it all...but she said it was delicious....I will have to sneak a bite next time! The saimin and burger combo was perfect. There's something about these two that just taste better together. We ordered a plain burger, just as a control. It was so good! We may order the deluxe burger next time, but actually, the plain burger was absolutely delicious. The saimin was great. The dashi soup flavor was light...not strong or fishy...so it matched well with the burger. The noodles were cooked to perfection (al dente) and complemented the luncheon meat and fish cake perfectly. The ono ono shake we ordered was chocolate flavored. But because each shake has lots of peanut butter in it, the shake tasted like Reeses peanut butter cups! It was so thick I had to use a spoon, which is how I like it. There was talk and rumors of additional food coming. A special blend of coffee and also nachos....cant wait! I can already envision coffee in my ono ono shake, and nachos over my waffle dog! Yes, 50% of the magic of this place comes with the satisfying food, but the other half, was the joy the staff showed. Dayton and his friends were so happy just to be there....it made the experience next level. Even though we weren't there for a real long time (just long enough to dine in), we had interaction with every person working. Each worker came by our table, talked about food, the restaurant and wore a smile. These conversations, this joy, is what will keep me coming back. When someone is happy about what they are doing...it shows. Check the days and times before you go....but defnitely go....you will leave full and with a smile. read more

The burger was tasty, included onions and you could customize your toppings. The Waffle Dog was decent, exactly what you would expect! The star of the show were the shakes. They offer a banana and chocolate shake, both being very thick with a lot of peanut butter in both! Bring a spoon and enjoy a classic Hawaii meal. read more

Okay guys, just had lunch at KC @ the Mission and it is the stuff of local childhoods. I'm talking about nostalgia to the max! We essentially ordered the board, a deluxe burger with cooked onions, a regular cheeseburger, 2 Teri sticks, a waffledog (of course), anda saimin with the Ono Ono shake and the Banana shake, both with peanut butter. The burgers were no frills good with the soft warm bun, but the relish they serve on the side really made it. The Teri sticks were soft with just the right amount of chew and hardcore teriyaki flavor. The waffle dog is, well, a classic waffle dog and is really good with some mustard. The saimin is true local with the spam. I mean, is it even local saimin without the spam?!? The highlight of course were the shakes. They were so rich and thick but not overly sweet or cloying. I really enjoyed it and kept taking sips, and I am not even a big peanut butter shake person. They are located at the mission and they have split seating between the kitchen area and the downstairs social hall. We stayed in the kitchen because being surrounded by all the smells made it even better. It is extremely small and no-frills which I appreciated. Nothing fancy here but just straight up great food. Everyone was so nice and the service is really good. The cook was very friendly and chill and they all are so attentive, very homey and they treat everyone like family. Best part? Nothing is over $10, except maybe the saimin and burger combo which is &12. Canned sodas? Only $1. Seriously. And they said they do their regular pop ups there to help the church make some money which is super nice. They do events too, and I would totally have them do my kid's 1st birthday party if I had another kid.lol All in all, it was a really great lunch with great people and ono food. Wild! The most hole in the wall place ever I walked by randomly one night. I decided not to go to the sushi place or the Japanese curry place on King right there because I didn't feel like eating somewhere like that by myself. So I was walking over to the McDonald's and stumbled across this Like serious though. A couple signs pointing at a door. Walk down the hallway. Another door into a kitchen that's for the mission. A couple places to see. A couple things on the menu, waffle dogs, hamburgers, shakes. Nice guys I don't know what else to say here. Just the most hole in the wall place I've ever been to. If there were no signs I would've walked by without even knowing there was a door They do Fridays and Saturdays til 10 and are members of the Singon Mission where they are located Food recipes are all from a drive-in that used to be down the street that I closed. Finally got to try KC Waffle Dog at the Mission after hearing about it for ages, and honestly, it was just okay for me. The nostalgia factor and the throwback vibes are cool, but the actual waffle dog itself didn't fully live up to the hype - no snap on the dog and a lightly sweet waffle batter, but flavor-wise it felt pretty standard and a little one-note without much seasoning or wow factor. This is not one of those fancy places you go or all the food, blogger hype, lunch spot and lunch trucks but this is one of those cozy old time. Coffee Shop feel where it's like walking into your neighbors house and enjoying a meal. I gave them five stars because of the customer service they were super friendly and did their best with the most sweetest effort to make sure you as a customer felt appreciated. The food itself was very tasty and very comfort food level exactly what I expected from the old KC drive-in even though the menu is very limited to burgers, waffle dogs, and saimin- the flavors were delicious and very reasonably priced. Water and coffee are free and seating is very limited right now. They are working out their kinks since they are fairly new but if you want to have some comfort food, I just feel like someplace you belong visit this little spot I regret not trying a shake as each one that was being made looks so delicious but I knew I was going to get two full having ordered one of each item. The TERI burger is not a burger patty with cherry sauce, but actual TERI meat inside so more like a terry sandwich. I had the burger crumble and was told to try their house special relish on it and it did not disappoint. If you don't like relish don't put it on your burger, but to me it was very tasty. read more

Happen to be driving by on Sheridan St. And craving food since it was after 12noon. This is the original KC waffle dog I remembered and loved. Those others are imposters and does not compare. The chocolate shake was thick and yummy. Good thing I had a spoon in the car to scoop up all the yumminess! The burger deluxe was delicious too. I can't wait to try the saimin and beef sticks.
