Laverne, the shop owner, was making colorful ribbon leis when I walked in just after 8:00 am. She was welcoming and recognized that I wasn't local. We chatted a bit about family as she made my Waffle Dog. KC Original Waffle Dog is her best seller. She prepares daily specials for the lunch crowd. The local newspaper neighborhood shop is small with only one table. A few shelves offer leis, candy and other souvenirs. I order at the rear one of the KC waffle dogs. Lavern starts the griddle and pours the batter and adds a hot dog. It as fun to watch her cook. The waffle batter has crispy edges, which are good. The dog is very hot and I have to eat it with care. Laverne provided Tartar sauce to dip the dog. It's a great little snack. I'd return to try her lunch specials. The prices are really reasonable and I love the local vibe. read more

Better late than never. March 26, 2024. Prince Kuhio Day. A group of us foodies decided to meet up at Mr. Coffee Bean Head (which unfortunately closed) for coffee to support local. Auntie (aka Nadine C.) recommended us to try them, especially new, local small businesses. After we got our cup of Joe, we sat down to discuss our foodie and travel adventures. None of us had eaten breakfast and it was now 8am where adjoining business of Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop (DOK) opened. DOK started off at Ohana Hale Marketplace where several Yeeps on the table remembered this booth. I did see waffle dogs at Ohana Hale Marketplace but never patronized them. Waffle dogs bring back fond memories of KC Drive Inn as they were an iconic business on the top of Kapahulu Ave. I was introduced to them when I'd hang around with my calabash cousin and family. I recall pulling up to this business where they'd order waffle dogs and the peanut butter milkshakes. Before we could even stand up, Peter Y. generously ordered waffle dogs for everyone. It was the first order of the day for the owner and she seemed thrilled. We waited patiently for the grill to get hot so she could prepare them. I love hot dogs with mustard and these waffle dogs are no exception. I generously placed French's yellow mustard on top and chowed down. Loved the crispy edges and the semi sweet doughy center. Great texture and flavor contrasts to the hot dog and yellow mustard. Perhaps it was too early but the owner could have been more customer friendly. So excited there's somewhere to get my throwback KC Drive-Inn fix...& who knew you could make waffle hot dogs 5 different ways?? Plus classic Ono Ono shakes to go with it, whaaat?? Ok, I'm sold...& I'm even ok with the sterile, bare bones, empty room vibe here, if that's what it takes. I really hope this place gets enough business, because it's hard to see it from the street. King Street is one way, heading Diamond Head--and this shop is tucked into the Diamond Head-facing inside corner of the building--so you literally have to look backwards while driving, just to see it (if you don't know it's there). If you pass Fujiyama Texas or reach McDonald's, you've gone too far. Parking is also limited...but the lot was almost empty when we went on a Saturday afternoon. Walking in, you'll immediately notice a lot of empty space. There are no tables or chairs for dine-in, no merchandise shelving along the walls (just a few cubbies full of bags & stickers for sale, on the left-side counter)...and one aunty standing behind the counter, who may or may not say hi as you enter (I think she's just shy). I was really hoping for more of a homey, old school snack shop feel...but I get that aunty has to work with what's she's got, & this space is huge. The menu is clearly DIY--basically just poster boards propped up on a table, to your left--but there are soooo many options, it's fun to sit & decide what you want. And don't miss the additional menu options taped up on either side of the register...also the front of the counter! I definitely want to come back during the week & try their daily specials sometime. I asked a few questions while we were there, and aunty responded, but wasn't too chatty...so I didn't force it. Although my 6yo wanted to try everything on the menu, we were just there to grab a quick snack, and settled on sharing the Original KC Combo (waffle dog & ono ono shake). He loved watching everything being made, and patiently waited the almost 10 minutes it took to get our food. Keep in mind, it's just one aunty making everything from scratch (waffle batter was at least pre-made), so this is not fast food by any means, lol. Once we got our order, we simply thanked aunty & walked out. Mission accomplished. Everything was fresh & delish, as expected...and the only downside was the paper straw, which immediately collapsed under the pressure of trying to suck up the thick milkshake. Boo. Luckily I had an extra straw in the car...otherwise that would've been a major buzz kill. Overall, I'll definitely go back for the waffle dogs & shakes (with my own straw)...& we may even venture into the rest of the menu, if we feel like splurging one day. Waffle Dogs in Honolulu, Hawaii... Back in the day, there used to be a popular place called KC Drive-In in Kapahulu. They were famous for the Waffle Dog... it's like a corn dog, but better! Instead of a coat of corn bread, the hot dog has a Waffle around it! I was so happy to find Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop at Ohana Hale Marketplace because they have the Waffle Dog machine! Then - I was so sad when Ohana Hale Marketplace closed down! Now... I'm excited again to find Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop on King Street (Moiliili)... where Anyplace Lounge was! Located between Paradise Leis and Texas Fujiyama, Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop is still operated by Laverne! She remembers our big Yelp Hawaii Elite Event a few years ago! Note: Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop shares its space with Mr. Coffee Bean Head ... and there are a few indoor seats with air conditioning. Tip: Ask for the key to the restroom. I actually wanted the Lobster Waffle Dog, but it wasn't ready today... shucks! So, I got a Chili cheese Waffle Dog... YUM! KC Waffle Dog... My bestie's favorite and seeing this newly located biz which once was at the Ohana Hale Marketplace is a joy to see these local small biz finding new homes along with Mr Coffee Bean Head here in Mo'ili'ili in the former location of Anyplace. Looking at the menu I see KC Original Waffle Hotdog and the nostalgia as I do remember going to the Drive Inn just a bit down the street on Kapahulu, they also have some fun items like Banana Split Waffle and Chicken Adobo Waffle which they were out of today but how about a Lobster dog or take it a combo with KC Original Ono Ono Shake. She kept it old school and got the KC Original which didn't disappoint as that sweet crunch waffle texture was nice and warm as it's made it order and that special relish sauce made it for her. The lady there was so nice and delightful describing the various items she has and knowing a bit of nostalgia is found right here is comforting in a nice warm waffle dog that something the locals love and can come back to. Fun (semi new) business in moiliili area! They were previously at ohana marketplace and now share a space with mr coffee bean head. Lots of free parking outside and their storefront is hidden behind a giant yellow trash can. When you walk in - you'll see the waffle dogs to your right and then towards the back is the coffee shop. The menu board is placed on a table which I think they could mount it and use it for guests that choose to dine in instead. The tables could also be more spaced out cause the seating inside is a little tight if you do choose to dine in. I originally wanted the waffle dog with chili but they were all out of chili that day so I got the plain waffle dog for $4.75. Met the nice owner (Laverne) and had a nice talk about her store and the relationship with KC Driven while she was making my order of waffle hot dogs. Very interesting to heat her story and we talked about our memories of the original drive inn, huunah buttah daze, and the changes if the time. She has the expertise and skills to make the waffle hot dogs! They tasted great asmI remembered it. This beats "Hot Dog on a stick" corn dog by a ling shot. Great to have somewhere that sells KC Waffle Dogs and Ono Ono Shakes. Five Stars for that. This is a review I've been contemplating for awhile now because it's like burning bridges and I love to have those waffle dogs and shakes. As for the other foods sold, I only had the hamburger steak and chili, and both were about the worst anywhere. The hamburger was bland and no way homemade, which may be the reason the lady wouldn't answer my question whether it was homemade. The gravy was also thin and translucent and as bland as the hamburger. Although I didn't ask whether the chili was homemade, my guess is it came from a can. What turned me off the most was the lady saying that Chili's Hawaii sold spoiled food, and that all the meats were frozen, and not fresh. IMO, it showed no class blasting your supposed partner and claiming she sold spoiled food. I wonder if that was one of the reasons why they parted ways. Anyways, the lady was always really nice, but hearing what she said makes me wonder. read more

She has plenty of choices of how you want your KC waffle hot dog with chili, cheese, bacon or just mustard. Ono Ono Shakes, Waffles, Acai Bowls, Drinks, Cookies, Chips too. Today, she didn't have any chili, cheese or bacon. How sad. I guess, the original and the ono ono shake it is then. Waffle Dog: I am pretty sure it was Oscar Mayer hot dog as I eat those at home. Crispy edges and soft middle. Ono Ono Shake: Chocolate!! Be careful, the top bubble top cover wasn't made for that cup. It was very loose! Good thing, I noticed that right away. Otherwise, my shake would be on the floor or on the ground outside. The lady in line before me ordered 3 waffle hot dogs and a chocolate shake. I didn't know that. I ordered 1 waffle hot dog and a chocolate shake. It worked out fine as the waffle maker makes 4 at a time. She filled the blender to make the 2 chocolate shakes. If not, I would've had to wait longer if the lady ordered 4 instead of 3. I waited 10 minutes. read more

Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop was previously in Ohana Hale Marketplace (OHM) and moved to the same building with Fujiyama Texas Hawai'i Kushi-Katsu Izakaya on King St after OHM closed. There is lots of parking in their private lot shared by the tenants of the building. The inside is newly renovated and they share the space with a coffee shop that was also from Ohana Hale Marketplace. I came here to order some KC Waffle Dogs for the Super Bowl. Figuring this would be fitting since hotdogs are good for football and it's KC vs SF so why not KC Waffle Dogs? It was a small get together so I ordered 15 of them. They can make up to 6 at a time. It didn't take long to get all 15 made. Talking story with the owner was a lot of fun and she's incredibly nice. Not only were the KC Waffle Dogs great with the sauce they provide, KC Chiefs beat SF in the Super Bowl. SF stays at 5 rings/championships and Da Ohana Kine Snack Shop is definitely deserving of 5 stars! read more

If you like KC waffle dogs after KCDrive inn closed and also the kiosk at Ohana Marketplace they opened a little shop in the same bldg where Texas Fujitmyama is located on S King St. They're located on the ground floor in a corner of the bldg. At first I couldn't locate it because a big dumpster was blocking their sign where I couldn't see. Until I walked around that dumpster and found it. The owner is still the same lady who ran that kiosk at Ohana marketplace on ward Ave. I ordered 2 waffle dogs and my husband a mocha ice blend from the other business in that store. The business name was Mr Coffee Bean head. The waffle dogs came out hot. Couldn't remember if it was that crispy. The mocha ice Coffee was good. Bought also a bag of peanut butter cookies.
