Takeout breakfast from Straub Benioff Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii... I've seen my friends checking in at this Cafe and wondered if it's all that... I knew that I could get the first half hour of parking for free in the structure, so I walked quickly. However, I ordered the Special of the Day: Steak and eggs... and it took a while because it's Made To Order. I was stressing out about the half hour time limit because I dislike paying for parking. The cafe was relatively easy to find. I just looked for the signs. I ordered with the cashier who filled out the order slip for me. I paid while I waited for my order... as soon as it came out, I rushed to my car and made it! Whew! Then, I had to find a place to eat where I could sit down and cut my steak with a plastic knife. Yes... It was challenging. I powered through because I was really hungry, so it tasted good... especially with ketchup which I got at the self-service station at the cafe... along with my utensils. I guess I would go again, but that 30 minutes of free parking is an obstacle for me. Maybe I should go on a Sunday or holiday when metered street parking is free? read more

Been coming here for years whenever I have a doctor's appointment. The daily hot food line is good and reasonably priced. They also offer sandwiches, salads, a small salad bar, plus soda and coffee stations with Starbucks coffee. The hot bar menu rotates daily, which keeps things interesting. One of my favorites is the ginger chicken. You can get three generous pieces of chicken thigh with a couple scoops of rice for about $13. I also really enjoy their shepherd's pie; it's hearty and comforting. I think their cafeteria is really good! They have lots of options and good local foods and entrees just like a plate lunch. Really tasty and they have a grill station for hamburgers and fries, soups, to go salads etc..its a little small but the food is good and it can get crowded during peak hours. Seating gets crowded and it's not as big but can do some outdoor seating. It's conveniently located coming out of the parking garage too, before you go into the hospital. read more

When I used to visit the sports medicine clinic at Straub Medical Center, a medical interpreter who worked there recommended this café, and we ended up coming here together many times. It was always lively, filled with not only patients but also doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff. She had worked with many hospitals and often said that Straub's café was the best -- a comment I still remember clearly. After my own visits ended, I naturally stopped coming here. However, during my husband's recent emergency hospitalization, I found myself relying on this café once again. What surprised me was discovering that each hospital room has a menu for inpatients. By ordering through a dedicated phone, meals are delivered directly to the room. Although the order was for my husband, his doctor allowed a regular diet, and I chose low-sodium, low-sugar options instead. Even if the flavors are a bit mild, knowing the meal comes from that familiar café somehow lifts the spirits. Patients can order up to three times a day, which is a wonderful service for anyone who still has an appetite during their hospital stay. This café doesn't just serve visitors and staff -- it also provides vital energy that supports hospitalized patients. We are fairly new to Straub but have been very impressed with our two trips to the ER/ED. The staff there is very efficient and polite and help get patients cared for efficiently. It's very clean as well. We haven't eaten there, so can't comment on the food. The healthcare providers are helpful and friendly, explaining anything when asked. The only thing that could make it even better is if they validate parking, but that's not a dealbreaker, especially since they try to make visits efficient. read more

Breakfast found here... Not quite the easiest to find... If you're not in the know as there's several doors leading to the dining area though it's all closed and you need to enter through the side door which is understandable but what confusion lol! Once you enter it's a nice service area which is roomy and spacious filled with various coolers of drinks and snacks galore and the hot food area is breakfast only and offers a breakfast bowl I think...not too sure as the menu and pricing wasn't something earlier found...actually I didn't and didn't want to be price shocked so I just looked around. The soup are was oatmeal and cream of wheat while the salad bar held some donuts and other sweets. Not really impressed though it was just breakfast wished they had menu stating what the current offers are but a nice place for a bite though I like the rotunda area better for my personal preference. I usually only go to Straub once a month for the Chinese Steamed Swai. I've been trying different items on the menu recently such as Beef Tomato, Chicken Curry, Chicken Piccata. My go to favorite will always be the Chinese Steamed Swai but the Chicken Curry is a go to as well. Portions are good for the price. The best breakfast! I can't ever make it to the café for lunch, but most certainly make it for breakfast. Friday's is my favorite day because of the adobo fried rice. So flavorful and filling. (My photo is of two scoops.) Wide selection of breakfast items to choose from; scrambled eggs, bacon, Portuguese sausage, pork sausage patties, little smokie links, mixed beans, and of course the daily fried rice. There is a pastry bar and an oatmeal / cream of wheat station that has brown sugar, raisins, and sliced almonds. There is a kitchen menu that you can order breakfast sandwiches, low cholesterol omelettes, as well as others. See photos I frequent Straub Cafe more than I should, but hey. I used to love their salmon burger with onion rings years ago. It's no longer on the menu. When I was there today they had their grill menu and lunch menu. I decided to get the shoyu chicken plate. It tasted like cafeteria food and lacked flavor. I should have known from the color of the skin that it needed more shoyu sauce. Maybe they're trying to cut down on sodium, since this is a hospital. I'm so glad to have discovered Straub Cafe!! They really have pretty good food here! I usually come here for the specials which you may have to wait about 5 minutes, but it's so reasonable and so good. Great quality and so fresh. You would see a few visitors like me but mostly Staub employees come here during their break. There are not too many other places in the area for them to grab a quick meal but they have a variety of choices from healthy to grilled foods here at Straub cafe. They offer usually three choices of hot items and one grill special. There is a salad and sandwich area too. There's some premade items and drinks in the refrigerator! There's even frozen treats in the freezer! I don't have to wait for my next appointment to come here! The burger was outstanding but my favorite was the recent Pastrami Reuben sandwich. The sourdough bread was grilled perfectly with the load of pastrami, sauerkraut and cheese. I was surprised it included the lettuce, onions, tomato underneath the sandwich too! Although the next time it didn't, lol. The fries were only a dollar more or for the special garlic fries or waffle fries was an option too for another additional dollar! They have a great breakfast too! Breakfast special made to order or choose from ala carte station of already prepared breakfast meats, eggs and starches. Right now, the order of meat were $2.59 or you can have a half order for $1.79. One or two scoops of fried rice. Their scoops were huge! Starches can be tater tots, potatoes, corn beef hash, or Kimchee, regular, or pork adobo fried rice! They have usually two selections of starches. Meats can be bacon, Portuguese sausage, pork links, smokies, or shoyu hot dog! Parking is free for the first 30 minute, so it's worth it to get your meal from here! Parking level 1-1-2 or was it 2nd level have the the whole level of handicap parking stalls and the level leads you down the ramp or stairs near the cafe. If you need to be by the Elevator, park on every other floor or was it on split level where the elevator is and go to the 1st level and walk down the ramp or the stairs. Need to check in the front of the hospital entrance to get a sticker of where you are going from the person sitting up front at the tables. Just say that you're going to the dining room. It's to the left. Menu is posted weekly on the Hawaii Pacific Health Straub cafe's website . They do catering per Joel D. The platters did look good. Just love coming here! Great place for lunch or breakfast. Just bring a bag to carry out your take out containers. They do offer foil, napkins and utensils. You can dine in at the tables outside or inside if still allow. During covid pandemic, dining inside was for the workers only. There are more sitting areas near the coffee/cafe kiosk outside near the pharmacy at the Ward Ave end. That reminds me that coffee place outside serve açaí bowls, but only thing they close early! I had an appointment at Straub and remembered a post from Donna O. My wife and I were gonna try the Taco Tuesday special and the pork watercress with tofu. Was told no tacos available, but they had Quisadlla available. Went to check with my wife. OK, we were gonna go with the pork watercress and the Quisadlla. Went back to the counter to place our order. Was informed that they had no cook. Well, I ordered the pork watercress. Good size portion, lots of pork and watercress for the price. I went here on March 4 and 5, since I was working over at the Hawaii Convention Center in setting up for an event. On March 4, I went here for breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, they have fried rice, Portuguese sausage, vegetables, link sausage, corned beef hash, bacon and eggs as options. There is also lighter fare like bagels and assorted fruits. I had the fried rice, bacon, and vegetables for breakfast. The cost for it came out to $10. Portion is a good-sized scoop. Lunch time they had options for pot roast, chicken long rice, and ginger tofu. I decided to have the pot roast. I had the option having it with rice or mashed potatoes. I choose to have it with mashed potatoes. The plate included the pot roast, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy on it. Pot roast was good, though they don't season it. Cost came out to $12. Then on March 5, I came here for lunch. The options for lunch were shoyu chicken, beef stir fry, and macaroni and cheese. I decided that day to have the macaroni and cheese. It was pretty good. I had to have an ultrasound at Straub Clinic and Hospital. But afterwards, I wanted breakfast and proceeded to go downstairs to street level cafe. On entering, there was a small line to order their special Andouille sausage (2) split in half with rice for $6.99. But I went into the other line for Portuguese Sausage, eggs and rice for about $5 + bottle of water $2.79. Hmmmm, I think next time I'll get a cup of ice and get water from the soda machine. (Free?). However, they are very generous with eggs and rice. Five sausages are enough if you cut in quarters. I ate 1/2 of big scoop rice, eggs, and 3 sausages. It was hot and tasty. Of course, I need ketchup which was great with everything. The inside cafe is reserved for staff. But there's an airy outside eating section for patients with tables 6 ft apart. Really hit or miss with doctors they have. Nurses for the most part are very nice with exception of a few. I went to the ER lastnight for chest discomfort. Did a blood pressure check and EKG and sent me home in pain. No blood test or anything. When read the doctor notes they were full of lies. Pastries include corn bread, donut, and other pastries. In 1 refrigerator, there were salad, yogurt parfait, sandwiches, and other prepared foods. In another refrigerator, there were cold beverages. So I stayed in straub hospital for virtually 2 weeks so I was able to try a lot. And I had been here 5 years ago for a week too. Anyway I would have to say the food is pretty tasty as long as you know what to order lol. But honestly there's only a few things that I didn't like cause I was basically able to try everything. I also did a little extra foodie detective work and asked random hospital workers what they thought was best and what do patients usually order. They mostly said SHOYU CHICKEN and it's definitely one of my favorites too. It's very tasty. Usually tender. Now as for people just strolling in they have menus. For clinic/hospital food I have to say this is some of the best I have had. I have found myself frequenting this cafeteria a bit too much while I wait for this or that. And enjoy the Starbucks coffee that they serve. Wow, that chicken over bed of spinach with Okinawan sweet potatos entree looks good. But that baked tofu (without the rice) looks healthier..."can I have the chicken meal but with the tofu instead of chicken?" No. "How about the basked tofu without rice, sub in spinach?" A lot of food to choose from as their menu changes everyday. The staff is friendly and helpful. Sometimes there is a line when paying but they try to get you out so you can enjoy your food quickly. Prices are also not that bad and not to expensive. Portions vary but overall you get enough for your money and to fill you up. read more

I had major surgery on my hip 2 weeks ago and ended up spending 3 nights in the hospital. What a treat to be able to order room service! I'm usually on a strict diet when I'm at home, but even though I was on a carb controlled diet in the hospital, they let me order just about anything I wanted! For me, a special treat is a tuna melt. I never buy canned tuna at home and never eat tuna sandwiches because of the mayo and bread, but hey..... I'm in the hospital so it's ok, right? I ordered a tuna melt every day I was there, lol. Once I ordered a hamburger. This is stuff I don't usually eat and wow it was delicious. I'd have it with a steaming cup of decaf coffee or green tea and nothing else. My surgery was a success and I'm at home now and recovering well, but I sure do miss those tuna melts. read more

I usually walk in for breakfast as the Fried Rice is very good nice chunks of Portuguese & Link Sausages, egg, spam and green onions etc.. great assortment of drinks of all varieties both hot and cold, Fruits, Dounuts, Oatmeal etc and all the regular breakfast foods. Lunch There is an assortment of pre-made sandwiches and usually at least two or three different entrees to pick from in the lunch counter not counting from the grill. Salads and fruit including yogurt etc are also available not a bad Cafe as far as Hospitals go I think this and the one in Queens are the two best ones in a Hospital. read more

They also have a lot of healthy choices: fresh fruits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, yogurt, granola, etc. if you don't like what they have out just simply fill out a slip to order from the grill. Lunch is usually a bit busy and the menu changes daily. But the grill is always open, as well as the fresh salad bar and sandwich station that they charge you by the pound for. They also have deserts to satisfy the sweet teeth. From ice cream bars, to candy, to fresh made deserts like parfaits, to donuts & pastries. The staff is very nice and friendly. The only thing that could make me look forward to getting a mammogram is the prospect of breakfast at the Straub Cafe. I really like their food, it's tasty and I assume healthy, but it doesn't taste healthy, it tastes delicious. They have fried rice, bacon, sausage, smoky links, link sausage, eggs, french toast, biscuits and gravy...... The prices are reasonable: 5.83 for scrambled eggs, fried rice and 8 smoky links. I have never tried the dinner here, but I have gotten a tuna fish cup for lunch and it was good, but hey how can you mess up a tuna cup?? This place has come a long way compared to how it was a while back. Before it was like meh, I'll just grab some chips and a drink. Now whenever I have a Dr. appointment I get something here if I'm not pressed for time. The chili bowl with rice or instead of rice, put a piece of cornbread in and smother it with chili! The hamburger steak is really good too. The chili is hearty and the hamburger steak is really tasty. They also have a udon station with lots of choices to add to it too.
