We had been there a while and waited a long time so once our food came out I didn't send back. My grits were extremely cold. My steak was well done. My daughter on the other hand sent hers back. Full disclosure: I worked here in the 90s and later met my husband here so KDs has a spot in my heart and will always. We hardly ever go in when we're visiting LC because it's hard to get a table and it's small and dark and the decor is (and always has been) weird. There's a jukebox (that used to work) and it sits dark in the corner taking up space for another table or two. BUT it's where you want to be in the wee small hours. Every single item on the menu is drunk food or hangover food...that's the magic of this place. It's not fresh. It's not innovative. But it'll soak up the booze and it'll taste good. Don't worry about anything else. No bar but there's beer I think - at least there used to be.) Good coffee though the big espresso machine is gone so it's drip only. Giant water glasses and speedy refills. The best damn pancakes in the world. Hashbrowns that are wildly customizable and delicious. Amazing eggs. Big sandwiches and po-boys. And the fun of sitting around and reminiscing, pointing out the old dudes at the bar who've been in the same seats for 24 years. Next time you catch yourself in SWLA, hit this place up. HUGE disappointment. I grew up in Lake Charles and lived there for 27 years, grew up eating KD's. Its a hometown classic, or at least I thought. For years, I've talked so highly about the gumbo at KD's diner to my mom. She has never had the KD's famous gumbo so while being home for the holidays, we decided to treat her. We got the gumbo to go and upon opening our THREE large cups of "gumbo" we find JUICE. No chicken and sausage, clearly just the remains of the day's gumbo. I called the diner to complain, the employee was so unapologetic, never said sorry once, his tone almost sounded like he thought it was funny. Nothing ostentatious about this place. I got The Hungry Man breakfast and wasn't disappointed, So let me get into that. The pancakes are incredible. I avoid pancakes mostly because I find them too filling. These cakes were sweet, light and fluffy. Comes with two. Great cakes. Plenty of alternative options with this plate, almost a build-your-own. Being able to select grits, bacon, biscuit with gravy is like being a breakfast poet and they are sure to accommodate. KD's is my go to spot when visiting Lake Charles. It's 24 hours and serves up breakfast anytime. Waitstaff is friendly and the diner is small, so more than likely you'll have to wait to get a table. This is place has character and everything a 24 hour diner from a horror movie should possess except a buzzing no vacancy sign out front. Arriving a little after 4:00 AM we had no idea what to expect but everything I observed after pulling in the parking told me it was going to be a memorable experience. Walking through the door was immediate validation, the small isolated booths the outdated counter and stools the tin ceiling and scruffy decor all painted the picture that we were about to dine in a diner along old Route 66 in the 1950's. The place was mostly filled with fictional type characters that could have been the cast in a Alfred Hitchcock movie, with the staff all playing the lead parts. I kept waiting for Rod Sterling to show up and welcome me to the twilight zone. All of the whispering and giggling between us quickly subsided once the food was placed before us on the small square semi unstable table that most likely was stabilized with a few folded cards from a deck left over from a illegal poker game. The first plate displayed my perfectly cooked medium fried eggs, with a bone-in grilled ham steak that may have been the best I've ever tasted which I credit to the ancient seasoned flat top it was grilled on, served with the perfect white buttered toast, across from me sat a handcrafted veggie omelette that on looks alone would rival most, paired with some of the most flavorful crispy hash-browns ever they were really incredible (all hash-brown should be eaten with A-1 Steak Sauce these required none) but the star of the breakfast trio was the strange looking oversize biscuit, it was browned and crusty on the outside, feather light and fluffy on the inside it may have been the perfect homemade biscuit, the person responsible for these biscuits should consider a marketing plan. Taking all things into account and maybe overlooking a few possible hygiene issues which in my mind I attributed to the age of the place so I can justify coming back every opportunity I get, this place gets 5 stars in regards to the food, the service and the atmosphere. read more

I sat at the counter area and the male slim cutie with the blond hair in a ponytail decided he would take 4 folks order(including mine) without writing a single thing down.(2/28/15 1235AM). He came back to clarify what hot tea I ordered even though I already told him. Forgot the guy next to me's bacon and cheese for a burger and gave me toast instead of the biscuit I ordered. My boyfriend was all excited that he found a diner, he loves them! Very disappointed, has the diner feel but the food was mediocre at best. Nothing special about it, they don't even serve corned beef hash for breakfast. We were there at around 2PM on a sunday and there were some people in there that looked a hot mess, drinking and such, may have been a woman looking for a sale......if you know what I mean. Little hole in the wall place, that doesn't look like much from the outside. But don't let that fool you, the service and the food is amazing. It was busy when we showed up on a Thursday at 11am, but they quickly turn tables and our wait was maybe 10min. The waitress quickly got out drink menu and was ready to take out food order when she dropped the drinks off. My husband ordered the hungry man's breakfast and I ordered the KD's large breakfast. Everything was perfect, eggs, bacon, hash browns, but the star of the show were the pancakes that came with my husbands dish. Fluffy with the perfect crispy edge, I mean it was delicious. My second time coming here ever. First time was so good that we literally searched for 30 minutes to find it again. This time everything was going great... server was nice got our drinks on time everything. Then food comes out..... I ordered a chicken scrambled thing that comes topped with gravy.... so it comes out and I notice.... not only is my chicken burnt to a black crisp but the parts that were not burnt they faced up and covered it excessively in gravy. I used to manage a kitchen and was head chef at another.... the chicken was literally hard and black.... So I started to pull the chicken out of my food since everything else looked ok. I was placing the chicken on the table because we had no room on the table and figured they would bring me a plate to put it on but I didn't want the burnt food on my plate and didn't think it was necessary for then to have to make me a whole new one. I told the waitress abbey who was delivering our food "hey my chicken is all burnt" to which she replies "okay?" "Do you want some more?" To which I replied yes so she walks off and not even 2 minutes later a African American man walks out from the back looking at me like he wanted to fight slams his hand on the table and scoops up the chicken.... then walks to the back like he just proved something... 5 min later here he comes again walking like he wants to fight me again and drops the chicken off to which I thank him... So once abbey walks back over I asked is everything ok with him... She tells me It's just rude what you did.... So I have to think what I did that could of been rude.... so I said what was rude.... She said sitting the food on the table like that.... it's rude. Would you do that at your house? I said yea if I burnt chicken and tried to hide it under gravy I'd put it on the table as well at my house.... She replies well it's rude you should of put it in a plate or something not on the table.... I said well there is literally no plates on my table and there is no room except right there.... (this being said we cleaned our own table so she's not worried about cleanliness) She restates that's rude again and then walks off.... So I go to pay and the cook decides it's a perfect time to turn around cross his arms and stare at me..... trying to intimidate me.... I would do no stars if I could! We actually didn't even get to eat. We stood for 15 minutes with no acknowledgement at all. The waitresses all looked at us and keep going on about their business. We had to ask if we are supposed to seat ourselves and were told they had no clean tables and we'd have to wait. There were 3 tables empty and still waitresses were in no rush to seat us. This happened between 4:30pm and 5pm on Monday, February 24, 2020. Excuse the language, but I am so damn sick of this! I've been to KD's countless times with the service dogs. Today, I wanted to pick up a Langniappe, and remembered that they had them there, I got one and then I went into the restaurant as I needed something to eat. I did what I always do - go to a table, sit down, put the blankets for the service dogs down UNDER the table so they are not in the way. A waitress comes out: Waitress: You can't have them here. Me: That's not federal law. Waitress: You can't have them here without vests. Me: That's not federal law. I can tell you they are service dogs and what they do for me. Waitress: I'm going to have to call my boss and ask. (Here, I thought it was a woman, because a lady did come and talk to me about them before and we had a decent conversation and everything was nice. She understood that it is my decision if I let people pet them. They don't get to beg for attention. People ask me if they can pet them. She even pet them and talked to them and told them what good dogs they are once she understood. I was wrong, the waitress comes back with her cell phone telling me that the manager wants to talk to me and it is some guy named Jon.) Jon: You can't have the dogs in there unless they are wearing vests. I know who you are. I've had to deal with you before. (This hurt me because "deal with me" means not listening to me, talking over me, and refusing access to me because of my well-behaved and well-trained service dogs). Me: That's not federal law. Jon: Yes, it is. Me: No, it's not. Jon: The law has changed. Me: No, it hasn't. Look up ADA service dog law online. Jon: I have. Me: No, you haven't. Jon: It's now a felony. Me: No, it's not. Jon: Well, I can deny service to anybody, so you have to vacate the premises. The last thing I need is any more people trying to arrest me for things that I don't do or things that I should not have to deal with. I knew if I didn't leave, he'd probably call the police on me. Have my service dogs ever barked when I've been at KD's? No. Have my service dogs ever used the bathroom in KD's? No. Have my service dogs ever bitten anybody when I've been at KD's? No. What do they do? They stay with me, quiety, in case I need them. Radar is either in my lap, under the table (not at it, my transport wheelchair is at the right height to where she is in my lap and under the table or on blankets on the floor and Niblet is on the blankets under the table on the floor). This is breaking federal law, but they don't care. It's all about them being right. I kept asserting myself. I didn't yell. I just kept telling the guy the truth and he would talkk right over me and not listen one bit. It was all HIS agenda and what HE wanted. I'm very hurt. I really wish people in this city would follow federal service dog law (and honestly, Louisiana service dog law is even more lax than federal service dog law, but NOBODY, not one single person, cares). Lake Charles NEEDS ADA lawyers and people that represent the rights for people with service dogs. I know why I don't see a lot of people with their service dogs. I know of some that I have seen at some places. They way business treat people with service dogs is awful. And mine are little ones!
