I went in to get some fish for my tank the other week at Kee's. I got six fish and after a week, four of the six fish have died. I think I found my little sister's new favorite store. In fact, she assured me she would work here when she is older. This made me laugh. As soon as you walk in, you can hear all the birds. They have items for cats and dogs, with two kittens I witnessed walking around freely. They have large and small tanks for fish. They also have tanks for reptiles and sell a variety of them in the store. They also sell hermit crab abd accessories for them. We saw gerbils, chinchillas, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits. I see a cute tortoise in a tank as well. While we were looking at the rabbits, my sister was startled by the cute parrot sitting out of its cage. This parrot was beautiful and very talkitive. He enjoyed our company. We saw a lot accessories for animals, especially fish and birds. The burd cages were in the back and they were all happily chirping along. I was super impressed with the freshwater and saltwater fish sections. I did not expect them to have such a large variety. A male employee was super helpful with my sister, as she has a beta fish, and they typically do not do well with other fish. He told us which ones could be paired, but to be careful. We would need a heater for the tetra fish, so my sister would like to wait to get t another time. They had pretty neon and glow ones. The saltwater section was especially beautiful, as it reminded me of my childhood. I saw the many fish we used to have in our old tank. I loved the pretty live rocks, coral, and large decorative rocks. They had so many different and unique types of species. I've never seen some of them before. The two ladies working were also helpful and asked if we needed any help. One of the ladies was talking to me about the cats, and I was sharing how I had a black and organge tabby as well. They were friendly cats and loved affection. We will definetely come back once my sister saves up her money for a heater and can buy more fish, and accessories. read more

I love this store because of its wide variety of animals it caters towards. Birds, Guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, various reptiles and amphibians, and aquatic species as well. Most employees are well rehearsed on animal needs or at least the ones that they own themselves. I signed up for the pet club to earn points and get discounts since I have 2 fish tanks and 14 female Guinea pigs! They were super helpful and the owner was extremely friendly when giving us information. They went above and beyond when trying to find the best deal for a 60 gallon tank. Even helped load the heavy oak stand into the truck after hours. Helped with tank stocking so it would be a very peaceful community with lots of live plants which are low maintenance. Wonderful selection of Guinea pig toys, mine can't get enough of them! My ONLY complaint with this store is the sale of live animals. They have wayyyy too many Guinea pigs in the cages and too many rabbits in small wire-bottom cages. They do however have plenty of food, water, ect but no room to run & high chances of disease spreading. Rabbits and Guinea pigs run a high chance of spreading diseases which are deadly to Guinea pigs. The acrylic tanks/cages allows for too much ammonia build up which can cause URIs. For an unsuspecting new pet parent, they would shrug off as sneezing. Antibiotics are fairly cheap but has to be bought from a vet after diagnosis which many parents wouldn't do for a "childs pet". There are soooo many Guinea pigs in shelters and rescues in need of new homes and wish that they'd try rehoming before mass breeding at the store. Also, don't buy hamster, Guinea pig, or small animal cages here! None are large enough or for hamsters offer deep enough trays to fulfill the minimum requirement of 6-8in of bedding. For Guinea pigs, Midwest, C&C, or homemade is the way to go. Hamsters have more suitable options both store bought and homemade, just do some research! read more

Not sure why I've never reviewed Kee's before. Walking into this place will definitely make you either want to start some sort of aquarium and for sure add beautiful coral reefs. First - Buddy gets all my attention when I walk in and he's always eating something tasty. Then I feel good to move about the store to choose treats or toys for my boys. They have items for cats, dogs, birds, fish, hamsters and more. There are also pet's for purchase such as kittens when in season, various rabbits, small birds like finches and parakeets for sale, as well as reptiles. I'm sure I've missed some of the pets, you'd just have to stop by and check it out. read more

Amazing. I went to them 15 years ago when I bought a huge aquarium and had no idea what I was doing. They helped and were great! Now my kid wanted a small tank and after loosing fish within hours per petco advice I went right back to Kees. We are up and running now and on a second tank. Although some fish are a little more expensive they take care of them am I don't mind paying for great customer service. read more

I was in the store to buy dog shampoo and a brush. The store was almost empty of merchandise and I was the only customer in the store. I was standing at the register to pay for a couple of minutes while the cashier was on the phone completely ignoring me. He knew I was there but continued to talk on the phone. Finally he just started ringing me up without getting off his phone call. I would not recommend this rude store to anyone. This is the reason people purchase from Amazon these days. I actually really love this pet store, however they always sell bunnies at 4 weeks of age when they aren't supposed to leave their mothers until 6-8 weeks. It's really bad for the baby's and i hope they change that policy so the bunnies are healthier. read more

Just moved from California and this to me is the best saltwater store in a 10 mile radius. Glad I stopped in and found this gem. I drove 40 minutes away just to see nothing but dirty aquariums and dead fish. Kees takes care of their animals and fish. I have a saltwater aquarium and can also buy saltwater mixed water that's ready. As a Wounded Veteran this makes my job easier and the staff is very accommodating. I became a member because my son owns Geckos and between the both of us we are saving a lot on money. My time and money are precious so who doesn't like to save money. Thank you Kees read more

Worst customer service ever!! Called then asking questions about my rabbit the older lady went off on me and was bashing on petco. When me and my cousin went to go get her a rabbit that same lady came up to me out of NOWHERE and yelling in front of customers at me and saying how petco doesn't know what they're talking about and that they've only been in business for 25 years and that they have been in business for much longer. Just out of nowhere when she wasn't the person helping us out. The owner just stood there and did not say one word about her behavior just listened and watched. When we left the store a few people walked out and let me and my cousin know that the woman selling us the bunny was telling them (customers) that she did not want to give him to us. Overall just very disrespectful. The owner seemed nice... I'm surprised he let his workers talk to people like that. read more

After moving to Shelby Twp., we very were pleased to find a family owned, local business to shop at for our animals' needs. Despite mixed reviews found online, we gave the shop a try, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. However, after being underwhelmed by their selections we weren't convinced to remain customers. During our last visit, shortly after losing our cat, my son and husband fell in love with some Siamese/Himalayan kittens at Kee's. We were assured the kittens had been seen by a vet 2-3 days before we adopted and received the ppwk as evidence. Unfortunately we brought home the fuzzball and discovered a body full of fleas (36 hatched adults, numerous eggs, TONS of flea poop), gunky ears, and very dirty fur. After multiple baths, fleas treatments, and two weeks of medications for his ears, he's now thankfully a healthy cat! We called Kee's the morning after bringing our kitten home to let them know about the issues we found. The woman who answered the phone told me their store was flea free and had no idea how that could have happened. I assured her that we started finding fleas as soon as we arrived home and encouraged her to check the other animals. She very rudely told me it wasn't their issue, then said, "thanks, bye," and hung up the phone. read more

Dave, who I assume is one of the owners, helped me with the purchase of an Oceanic Biocube 14g for a nano-reef setup that I'm putting together for my daughters. While the store was extremely busy, he took the time to provide in-depth, knowledgeable answers to my questions. Their prices are in-line with other shops in the area and competitive with online sources too. Even if they were a bit higher, it's worth paying a few extra bucks to have access to people with knowledge and passion about their trade. Check 'em out. read more

If you like fish, or aquariums, this is the place for you. I mean seriously, they have tanks stocked up for abour 3/5 of the place, and they are mostly SHOW TANKS. Yes, tanks that are just plain awesome. The centerpiece is a 1000 gallon salt tank. It's amazing. You have to see it in person! Plus they have a huge variety of aquarium plants that you would usually only find on ebay. And they have crazy exotic tropical fish too. If you've been going to petco or petsmart for fish, or even your LFS, I beg you to try this place. I didn't buy anything, since I didn't really need anything, but when I set up a new aquarium, this will be my to-go spot for it!! read more

I bought a reef blue chromis over the weekend. Fish looked healthy but less than 12 hours later it was dead. I called kee's and spoke to the owner Dave. He stated they usually do not have any type of return policy for Saltwater fish but said to bring it in. I went back up there with the little guy who didn't make it and Dave said to go ahead and get another one. Now the day before there were three of them in the tank and now they appear to be out. However I noticed a dead one behind the rock. As soon as I seen this my heart sank as I knew my main tank was going to be in trouble because I did not use a QT tank which is my own fault. Wouldn't you know it, two days later I notice my neon doddyback is not looking quit right. I am now in the process of trying to halt off a crash and lose all my fish. read more

I should've left this when I purchased my kitten from Kee's last summer; none of their kittens ever see the inside of a vet's office, and if they do, the vet should have his/her license revoked. My "healthy male kitten" turned out to be a female that was riddled with parasites. Her stool stunk up the entire house so badly that there is absolutely no way any vet or pet professional would've ever thought something wasn't wrong. After two rounds of antibiotics and three vet visits in two weeks (not to mention paying for multiple stool samples), my kitten was finally the "healthy" status that Jean Kee assured me "he" had. After hearing stories and reading other reviews I would never recommend this establishment. read more

First off, I'm not a friend of anyone there. They have been extremely helpful to me. I let them know what I am thinking of doing for my marine tank, they give me an honest opinion and don't oversell me on items. People comment about prices from large stores and amazon, but the prices are fair. I am also willing to support a locally owned and operated establishment and pay a little more. That being said, the prices are still fair. Shipments come in weekly, if they don't have it, it can be ordered and arrive quickly. I appreciate going in and viewing what I am purchasing especially livestock and corals. I've traveled to most of the aquariums in the area (within 50 miles) and most are helpful and willing to share information. Thanks for having a great place. read more

I am really disappointed in Kee's. We started a small 20 gallon aquarium a couple years back for my daughter and bought most of the gear from Kee's. Once we had the tank established we went back to buy fish and struggled to keep the fish alive despite properly balanced water, as tested by Kee's. Since we had little success here, we ended up seeking advice and new fish from Moby Dick's in Waterford. We had much better success there and had a healthy tank with 9 fish and an algae eater for almost two years without a fatality. Last week, my daughter wanted to add a couple fish and we were near Kee's, so we stopped in and picked up a pair of Gobys and a couple of plants. That was on a Monday. By Tuesdays, half of the fish in the tank were covered with Ick. We began treating the fish with Paraguard in a quarantine tank but by Sunday afternoon, our entire population of fish, with the exception of one of the new Gobys, was dead :(. My daughter was devastated as she and the family worked really hard to care for the tank over the last couple years. So, my wife went back to Kee's today and talked to Dave, the owner, who was less than kind, and refused to take any kind of responsibility. All my wife asked for was a refund on the plants and the Gobys. He refused to believe that the Ich came from his fish or plants and after an argument, told my wife to never come back. That was definitely Dave's best advise. We haven't been able to keep a single fish alive from his store, with his advice on care and treatment, so it makes no sense to keep doing business there. Especially with an owner who isn't interested in giving his customers the benefit of the doubt. If you're in the market for an aquarium, I'd recommend you find a place who actually cares about it's customers and the well being of the creatures it sells. read more

This place is so over priced for every item they sell. Their fish are small in size but their prices are very large. You can get the same type of fish....but larger and a cheaper price at other pet stores in the metro area. The staff is not very friendly and honestly, their fish don't appear to be in the best condition. I purchased a male Canary from Kee's ($120) back in early December. Before I paid for the bird I specifically asked about a guarantee if the bird didn't sing. I was offered several options...exchange for another canary...store credit or a REFUND. During the month i had the bird it never sang or even chirped. I called the store every week or so to keep them posted on the birds progress. After a month I informed the store that I would be returning the bird. No problem...I exchanged it for another male canary. Again, I keep this canary for a month. Regretfully, I experienced the same results with this bird. As with my 1st canary I purchased, I called every week or so to keep them posted on the birds status. Well...again I returned the canary, only to be told I could only get a store credit. I was told I could use it on my other pets...What Other Pets? I took the bird back home and will pay it forward and give to 1 of my neighbors. I've been to the store two times and both times there was an older woman who was working at the register that was very rude the first time it happened I shrugged it off as her experiencing a rough day and returned to purchase my gerbils from them only to have her be there again and treat me rudely for the second time so I will not be returning! Over priced and bad customer service. Bought a Royal Gramma and it died within 5 days of purchase. Store would not even offer store credit or exchange. They offered to test my water to help me with what ever killed the fish, but considering I have 9 other fish living fine in the same water this was not the issue. I would have been happy with even just a percentage credit of what I paid. Once again I have found a trip to Lansing for saltwater fish is more than worth the gas money and time! Let me start off my saying it was my first time going to this place, which takes me a half an hour to get there first off. The place itself was was nice inside, but the workers were very rude! We spent about 30 minutes here but wanted to stay longer to shop around but felt rushed and unwanted being there. Never got greeted, till 15 minutes in one worker said what do you need? So the complaints are, no bathrooms and fish selection is poor. I have absolutely no problems with this store. The owner and staff are very helpful and usually when it's slammed (which anyone in retail knows) they try their hardest to accommodate. Our family loves the selection of dog treats and toys, ferret and small animal supplies and of course the store cats! You don't need to go anywhere else for your pet care needs. Kee's Pet store is fantastic for fish, both fresh water and salt water. If you want anything else in the realm of small animal care, you won't find a better selection or a more helpful staff then here. They do not stock cats or dogs which I think is a benefit because it doesn't take away from the other animals that they do offer. They do have some exotic Lizards and snakes along with a good selection of rabbits, chinchillas, birds, and other small mammals. We have purchased 2 lizards and a Russian tortoise Here over the past few years. They are also very helpful and full of excellent advice. I have spot checked them on some of the advice they offer for free and they are right on. Their club card will save you some money, especially when it comes to the more expensive items like dog food and so on. We are regular customers and will continue to be so. Great work guys! They are a great source of knowledge about what I am interested in (Saltwater fish) and the only sell you what you need, not the latest and greatest Fad equipment or chemicals. I give them credit for having some pet supplies I haven't seen before . But waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy to overpriced. They hae rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters , reptiles, and many fish. However I went there to maybe look at bunnies to get mine a friend in January 2014 for its birthday. I asked if I could hold one the guy gave the response "we don't handle the animals unless your taking it home" every pet owner know handling animals makes them more friendly so the don't bite someone. Thank you Kees Pets at 23 mile and Van Dyke for reminding me that there is still progress to be made and how to lose business and make people feel unwelcome. My husband and I go in there with the intention of looking at driftwood and freshwater shrimp, but got distracted by a cute bunny. As we were discussing the possibility of the rabbit and how to rearrange stuff, the older woman started to get short and an attitude with us. As we left the rabbit to its own devices, the music quickly changed to very religious jesus music that increased in volume. As we continued to look around we were met with side eye and hostile body language from this woman. After a couple more minutes we began to leave as this woman decided to stare us down. So thank you for showing us how not to treat customers or fellow human beings. read more
