I had a wonderful Friday Fish Fry at Kegel's tonight. The perch was perfectly cooked and the fries, cole slaw and rye bread rounded out this Wisconsin staple. The dining room was classically decorated with scenes of German nature scenes throughout. They also have a huge outdoor dining space where on some nights they play live Polka music. It was clear everyone was having a great time out there. I can imagine they get really busy at times but they do offer reservations so if you plan ahead, getting a table shouldn't be a problem. read more

Every time I come back "home" Kegel's is on the must do list. 2-3x a year.... I Visited last night.... The food was great like always. Sauerbraten spot on. Pork Shanks nasty good! Sausage plate great! French onion soup... super ! Table service excellent..... On this particular visit the bar was a letdown. And that's where most customers start their evening....... That sets the tone. Maybe an off night, there were newer employees behind the bar. My brandy old fashion sweet was not even close. No muddle, bad mix.... It was terrible. A friend of mine took a sip and winced.... This is a staple cocktail in Wisconsin. Do it right or dont do it. I quietly returned the drink and asked for a whiskey on the rocks... I made no scene... then was charged for the whiskey as well!!! About 8 people were seated at the bar.... Brewers were playing..... end of game, extra innings. We asked if the tv could be turned on.....no volume necesssary, but was told management didn't want people to think this was a sports bar so we were politely told NO! .... It's a 100 yro German bar ..... we weren't trying to change its culture.... We've been going there for decades.... And in the past games had been televised. I'm thinking the tv was broke.... and that was the excuse? Why is the Tv even in the bar.... Someone also ordered a cab wine... none! ? Seriously? Unfortunately the bar was a big letdown.... I hope they pay attention and improve their bar game. I'll be back in October and probably will skip Kegels for the first time in a very long time.... I'm sure they'll survive.... Living in Milwaukee my entire life and being German myself, it's hard to believe I've never been here! Walking up to the restaurant on a Friday summer evening, the outdoor seating area looked welcoming with a polka band playing but we opted to sit indoors today. The warm wood interior, painted walls and stained glass gave the German beer hall feel you'd expect. We ordered a half liter and our fish dinner of choice. My baked fish and potato pancakes did not disappoint. The cod was flaky and well seasoned while the potato pancakes had a light cinnamon flavor that paired well with the applesauce. Coleslaw and rye bread were exactly as I'd expect. Our server was friendly and the overall service was quick too, even on a busy Friday evening. While we did have reservations, there appeared to be a few extra seats although we were there a little earlier than your usual "dinner rush" time so I'd recommend reservations if you really want to ensure you don't have to wait. read more

My girlfriend's friend was in from out of town, and she wanted to experience a fish fry, so we came here. I ordered the perch fry, since I had cod last time, almost 13 years ago. The perch was cooked a little overdone, but seasoning was fine. The potato pancakes were better than the last time I was here, with better texture and seasoning. My girlfriend had the Classic Cod fry and we exchanged pieces of fish. The Cod was better than I remember. They also offer walleye, bluegill, grouper, catfish, and baked cod. Friday's also offer live music in the tent. So I had a better experience with the fish fry today. I want to come back for German food soon. read more

We recently were in Milwaukee and got to try Kegel Inn's Lent Tent Friday Fish Fry and wow! it blew our socks off! We have been to Kegels over the years and they have always been great in quality of food, friend staff and an authentic German restaurant ambience. The owners really care what the patrons' experience is and it really shows in the food and care they take. When we lived in Milwaukee area in the '60s we would stop and have a ground sirloin burger for $1.25 and Mr Kegel was always there. Dressed in a white shirt and tie a very pleasant man. Now we stopped the other day to reminisce, ordered burgers and they were $17 dry and hard. Two burgers, a cup of chicken dumpling soup (one piece of chicken), an extra mushy dumpling, four beers plus tip just under $100. read more

My first time here in our search to find the best perch in Milwaukee and we may have found it tonight! First, I love that you can make a reservation, even on a Friday night. Parking is not great, but we lucked out with a street spot right in front. From hostess to server, everyone was very friendly and efficient. We were in and out in fiery minutes which was perfect considering I need to head to the airport to get my mom. You could certainly take your time though if needed. The perch had the perfect breading, the bread was soft, the potato pancakes were worth the $2 up charge. I will note that the prices online do not reflect their current menu prices so I would tack on a few more bucks to everything. Will come back! read more

We reserved one of their yurts for a party of 8, which was free on a Thursday night. This was a VERY COLD, WINDY night, so the vibe inside definitely felt warm and cozy, but we were committed to the yurt, so we gave it a shot. It was on the chilly side in the yurt, so dress appropriately. The heater they have inside didn't give much heat at all. We tried many dishes including the giant pretzel (very good!), walleye (super!), Karma Parma brat (meh), schnitzel (ok). All the sides were my favorite- the red cabbage, German potato salad, spatzle were all incredible. Those that had the dumpling soup said it was good. I would recommend that they cover the food when bringing from restaurant to the yurts outside, bc by the time the food reached us, it was pretty cold. Went here for Milwaukee Street Angel's 5th annual karaoke Fundraising event. It's nice of them to support the community as their stage for the event. I didn't get to try their food yet but need to! We were here last winter for German food and raved about it to everyone we knew. The schnitzel was amazing! So we were excited to go back for the Friday fish fry. What a disappointment. Hands down one of the worst fish frys I've had. Tiny little pieces of soggy lukewarm fish and burnt potato pancakes so hard they couldn't be cut. Don't waste your time there on a Friday night. Go another night when you can get schnitzel. read more

I was in town to visit relatives this week and wanted an authentic Austrian/German meal. I recently spent a month in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. I was raised by my Austrian mom. Kegel's food wouldn't have been served in any restaurant. The veal ( it's rare to find veal) schnitzel was rubbery, barely warm and lacked toasted bread crumbs. Looked very unappealing. The duck was ok, a bit dry. It was probably cooked earlier and reheated. The serving size was good. Served with a plastic cup of cranberry sauce. Plastic on a 37$ entree of duck. The bread stuffing that came with the duck was gluey. Austrians I know don't have gluey bread accompaniment to any dish. Only a firm bread dumpling. My other guest was given the wrong hamburger. He didn't want to wait for the correct on so he ate it. The decor was cute. I think other menu item like sausages could be fun outside in the beer garden. If you're a German food fan try some of the beer garden food. German food restaurants are disappearing from our cities.The two last German restaurants I've tried in the Milwaukee area have closed and were fabulous. I think it's getting hard to find people who can cook the food correctly. read more

Just don't bother. Thursday evening. 6:00 pm. Arrived 10 min early for reservation. We were seated promptly and waited with menus. No one came to offer water or take a drink order. After 15 minutes I went to ask the host if anyone would come. Eventually a server came. Looking flustered. She said "well I guess I will be waiting on you." I asked if no one had told her and she said no one had. Placed an order for an appetizer and drinks. Cheese curds were good. Finally got bread and butter then. Another 10 minutes passed before we were able to order food. Wasn't told what the seasonal veggies was; I asked as she was removing menus. Cucumber salad-which I don't eat. I told her I didn't want the cucumber salad and might like to substitute but she didn't give me any choices, left and never came back. Food then took a very very long time to arrive. Nothing complicated to make. Schnitzel and fish. Chicken dumpling was basic noodles (looked like spaetzle) chicken and broth. No vegetables. Fries were so salty you could barely eat them. Kid's fish fry was two tiny pieces despite saying two large pieces on the menu. Walleye was dry and left me with stomach pains later in the night. Just tasted fishy and off. Veal schnitzel were overcooked and tiny portions. Gravy so thick it wouldn't come out of the container when you tipped it over. We weren't asked how the food was or if everything was ok. Just if we needed anything else. Took the empty soda mug without offering a refill. I had never been here and had heard mixed reviews. It just felt rushed and chaotic. Overheard her telling another table "we are out of goulash!" Just felt like you were in a fast food type place. We will never go back. At this price point, there are many really good options in the area. This just isn't one of them. read more

TL:DR - great German food, perfect French fries, good service, authentic looking restaurant interior. Very authentic-looking interior, like a beer hall. Outside beer garden is also nice. Wes G. was our server, very nice. We got the complimentary bread, with garlic butter and regular butter. Nice little loaf of bread, and tasty butter. Food: - Side salad was adequate. Croutons seemed homemade from white bread, so they were lighter, not dense. I liked those. - The single Beef Rouladen was excellent. The meat was flavorful, as was the gravy and mashed potatoes. A slight nit - most of the roulade was done perfectly, not overcooked, had a slight pink to it. However, some of it was a bit mealy in texture, so not sure if it had sat in a sauce or something too long and got "cooked" by acidic stuff. - The Loaded Oktoberfest Brat was great. Lots of good stuff on it, and great tasting sausage. Of particular note were the French fries. Wow - cooked perfectly (double cooked?), so they stayed crispy throughout dinner. Stopped in for some drinks and apps. Coolest authentic German spot I've been to. They had an accordion band playing which was awesome. Lisa our server was so friendly and attentive despite how busy they were. The sausage platter was perfect for 4 people. The beer cheese served with the pretzel I could have ate by the spoonful. We have lived in the area and have known Kegels to be a great place for a fish fry. My wife ordered the baked fish and it wasn't fully cooked (clear inside). Kegel's has been around a long time -- 102 years, as I write this, so they clearly are doing something right. That said, my first, and likely only, dining experience last night was disappointing. My group and I were relegated to eating in an outdoor yurt, which was cold and uncomfortable, despite a portable heating system. The 3% "credit card processing fee," which was not clearly noticed, left a bad taste in my mouth as well. read more

We were really hoping for a good meal, but this visit ended up being pretty disappointing. The wait for our food was so unbearably long. We did get an apology from the staff, and they took one of our appetizers off the bill and gave us 10% off, which we appreciated. But honestly, it didn't really make up for how bad the overall experience was. What made things worse was the behavior of the manager. While we were waiting (for what felt like forever), we actually watched the manager carry a TV and an air conditioning unit across the street to what appeared to be an apartment complex. When our food finally arrived, it was a huge letdown. We ordered chicken patty sandwiches, which were cold, thin, and nearly chicken-less. 2/3 of us didn't even eat them. Even after eating, we were left sitting there waiting again--this time for our bill. The restaurant was nearly empty at this point, and we were the only table still outside. Yet the manager chose to wander outside and casually chat with friends instead of checking on his guests or helping wrap up our meal. The small discount was appreciated, but it didn't come close to making up for the overall poor experience. After watching the Bucks win their thrilling playoff game, it was about that time and the son asked where I might like to eat.  Being in Milwaukee, I said how about German.  Being well read, he picked this place, and it was a great and delightful choice.  Kegel's Inn is a historic institution, started in 1924, and now being run by the 4th generation of the Kegel family - very impressive longevity and congratulations to the Kegels!  It's got everything you might expect - the rustic, quaint, woody, and colorful Bavarian decor as well as a biergarten, which was quiet on this particular Saturday night. The son had a brandy old fashioned (their Nitro Tap version) and I had a nice, dark 0.5 liter (1.06 pint) serving of classic Hofbrau Dunkel (5.5% ABV).  For dinner, son had the Hasenpfeffer, or slow cooked rabbit ($35).  I had their Ramschnitzel - 2 Strauss veal steaks with creamy mushroom sauce ($33).  I enjoyed the tender and tasty schnitzels and liked having the mushroom sauce provided on the side.  The food prices struck me as being on the high side, but let's not forget this big historic place survived Covid, so more power to 'em.  My big beer at $8 was a pretty good value though.  Overall, a very delightful old-world German venue that really hit the spot! read more
