We called in to pre-order Lenten fish dinners for a pickup at 6:30pm. When placing the order, the girl on the phone repeated back our order and we confirmed 3 fish dinners with 6 sides. My husband went to pick up the meal and there was no organization. There was a group of people waiting outside. They were running 30-45 minutes behind on pickup orders. When my husband made it into the store, he gave an employee his name and the employee put together the bag of food. When my husband checked the bag/order, we were missing a fish dinner. They had rang in our order incorrectly and didn't include the third fish entree. So, he asked about if he could get it, and they told him it would be a long time until he would get it. The food was okay. Nothing had seasoning, so it was all pretty bland. The only thing that was seasoned were the potato pancakes. The mac and cheese we ordered was COLD (because it came out of a refrigerator), so I added my own seasonings to it when I reheated it. The set up is quite unassuming, both inside and outside, BUT they are cranking out a pretty good fish sandwich! Hand breaded and fried with a nice crunch. Biggest fish sandwich you'll ever get. The sides were decent, asked for fries but got potato pancakes. The hot sauce was also unique, I was a big fan and it went great with the fish. Staff were friendly and definitely has a regular crowd. We did fish sandwiches here during lent. A couple pieces you get a ton of fish and lots with the sides if you go that route. My wife and I split and it was plenty. It's also really good. Let's start with the food. The fish sandwich is probably the best I've ever eaten. This fish sandwich does not skimp on flavor and it is placed in a perfectly baked, flavorful bun. This place has one redeeming quality, seriously just one. The fish sandwich is legit. But the owner and the restaurant, quite bad. I alluded to the proprietor of this establishment in relation to the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld, however that might be too harsh a comparison, for the Soup Nazi that is. The good. Fish is huge, lightly battered, HUGE, and wait for it...Seasoned. It's not too greasy either. Definitely one of the best I have had. Many people rave about the hot sauce. I could take it or leave it. Everyone I know that eats here loves it, but to me it has the consistency (and color) of a duck sauce packet at a Chinese takeout restaurant with some chopped and possibly pickled as they are softer but not cooked, onions slightly spicy peppers and some seasoning. I think I can almost replicate it. It hardly classifies as hot sauce to me, lacking the first descriptive word in the phrase itself "hot". Also they only provide you with enough to use on maybe a quarter of your meal. Up to recently they would not sell any additional cups of sauce! They are only small soufflé cups of 2 oz portions but nope. However, now you can buy them for a mere .70 cents. The bun they use is ridiculous, but I am fine with that. I tend to ignore the bread on a nice fish sandwich. You can order additional buns, also at an exaggerated price of .70 cents. These are the kind of buns you can buy a bag at the grocery store for under $1.00 so if you're getting takeout I would just buy it elsewhere. Now the size of the sandwich is unmatched. It can feed two adults to the point of being stuffed. It could probably feed three people nicely, hence the attraction of buying additional buns. The flavor is awesome and the crunch and crust just perfect. Now the not so good. The place is a complete dive. Not a charming dive, a grease pit, smelly, sticky, restaurant that really, really needs some TLC. It appears it hasn't been cleaned in decades. Another not so charming thing about the establishment is the owners. They have no qualms telling you no even for reasonable requests without having a understandable reason. Point in case. Me and 3 co-workers head here for lunch. One co-worker calls ahead so meal is ready when we arrive not cutting into our lunch hour. Upon arrival we say who we are at the counter and they start packing up our food. My co-worker said oh we want to eat here since we all drove there. The answer is NO. You called ahead you take to go. I looked at my co-worker and asked "is he serious?" He just nodded and said let it go. HA! Hence the Soup Nazi comment. So instead of letting us eat there where we would have undoubtedly purchased drinks, maybe a side or two we were booted out of the empty restaurant for the crime of calling ahead. A few weeks later I was in the area at another retailer and asked this proprietor if he knows the restaurant and owners and what's up with them. He first said "best fish sandwich around." I said yes but what's up with them? He says "you think the man's bad the wife is worse." He went on to tell me that they are so popular they couldn't care less about being professional or polite to customers because if someone gets that upset about the service well move over because there is someone behind you ready to take their place. He also said that once someone called in a takeout order for salad (BTW they don't serve salads) and the person taking the call told the customer to F off, and hung up. This is the absolute BEST place to get fish! The first time we went there, we each ordered a fish dinner, not knowing how HUGE a meal this would be! It was enough for 4 people! I am happy to be the first reviewer of Keith Heinritz Catering. This is the place to come for incredible fish sandwiches on the east side of Pittsburgh. Don't be alarmed by the "hole in the wall" appearance from the outside because the inside is the same (ha ha). This is a pretty clean place for the high volume of activity going on here. If you order a large fish sandwich - it is enough to feed 2 people (but you may want to get an extra bun or 2). The krinkle cut fries and clam chowder soup are also very good. What makes the fish so good? Very good light breading but most importantly - extremely fresh tasting big chunks of perfectly fried fish. The big hunks of fish tend to fall apart when you eat it. Not greasy like some fish fries. No sign of a bad or old taste to the oil and fried stuff despite the long line and high volume. Perfect and yummy. They have about 7 or 8 workers swarming in the little kitchen and they seem to be serving it up fresh with minimal wait. A few more important notes - CASH ONLY. If you want to go on a Friday in Lent, you should consider ordering and picking up before 5:00pm to avoid the longer lines. There are some tables in here but most people take out. My daughter lives nearby and we pop into Keith's whenever we want fish. Its absolutely delicious, and enormous. The coleslaw is the best I've had since my Mom's and she passed away in 86. This place was as disgusting as it gets. The gentleman who brought me my take-out meal looked as if he didn't bathe in eight years. One of the workers was smoking a cigarette out on the front steps as I was trying to walk in with my two young children. She was missing approximately 8 to 10 teeth. If you're from this area, you've only ever heard 2 phrases about Keith Heinritz Katering (a.k.a. "Keith's"): 1) "Best fish sandwich in the region", and 2) "Health code violations" Those aren't my statements though, because I haven't tried the fish sandwiches yet and I'm not a pansy who's afraid to eat in an old-school joint that feels a bit sketchy perhaps. And that's exactly what this place is and you have to expect that going in... it's an OLD setup that hasn't been updated in at least 40 years. As far as I can tell, there's just one dude working there (presumably Keith??). After years of hearing about this place, I finally stopped in for an Italian hoagie (pronounced locally as AHY-TAYIN HEOW-GEE). And I have to say, it was quite good. It was a large portion (considering I bought the 6-inch) and the ingredients were good. I will definitely go back and try other menu items. Speaking of the menu... the only online source appears to be a Facebook page that's probably not actively maintained. The website listed on Google does not have a menu. Another aspect that speaks to the old-schoolness of this place. My guess is that the thought is... "if you're a stupid millennial who only buys food from places with online menus, then this isn't the kind of place for you". I like the idea that you kind of have to know somebody with prior experience in order to gain knowledge of what's cooking behind those doors. And what IS behind the doors will feel like your uncle's house... kind of pieced together with scrap wood and flea market items. Get over it you wuss, that's how hoagies get done at Keith's! The one thing that I witnessed that might concern the average modern young whipper-snapper (not real men like me though) is the fact that the entire time I was there, there was a loaf of turkey sitting out on the meat slicer. But dude... that lunch meat turkey is so full of preservatives that it has no chance of going bad anytime soon. You could leave that gobbler ahtside in the middle of dahntahn traffic for a week and it would still be edible. It's not like a Thanksgiving turkey that you bought from Giant "Eagles" n'at. That kind of turkey might be susceptible to botulism, or whatever - but not a processed hunk of (mostly?) turkey meat that goes into a sandwich. And let's be honest for a moment... IT'S IN TRAFFORD! You probably contracted hepatitis just by crossing the bridge. So relax about the "code violations". Eat a sandwich and ask yourself these questions: 1) Did you die? 2) Have you ever heard of anybody dying after eating here? 3) Do you even feel a little bit sick, or do you feel happy and fat? Be honest, my man! I'd also like to point out that this is an area that has very few decent food options (I work right down the road) and this is a good mom-n-pop option in an otherwise barren landscape of crappy food choices. So stop acting like a whiney-a$$ elitist from California. We do things differently around here. We take risks while we eat and we're better off for it. When we hear about the old days when Vinnie would have an ash hanging off the end of his cigarette while making your pizza, we say to ourselves "Well I never saw any ashes in my pie and it was delicious". When we see that episode of Seinfeld where Pappi didn't wash his hands after using the bathroom and went right back to cooking at the restaurant, we thought to ourselves "So... he didn't poop, right? My father finally decided to take me to his favorite fried fish restaurant, Keith Heinritz. I ordered ahead of time and when i went to pick up our food, i counted 4 health code violations. 1.) Their Cod was out and (it was within an arms reach of the counter, so my dad reached out to touch a piece) it was room temperature!! 2. No hats, no gloves, no hygiene, no thank you! 3. Nobody on staff that day was serv-safe certified. AND Keith heinritz's serv-safe was on display but expired in 2015. 4. I watched the yonger woman making my food touching about 17 things and then touch my food without washing her hands. Filthy beasts. This is not just a random person slandering your business, Keith. This is a friendly heads up that your staff is going to get someone sick and shut your business down. The health department has these rules and codes and tests because without them we are 1 step closer to a third world country. Take pride in your work. Just because business is good doesnt mean its okay to jeopardize the well being of your customers.
