To get freshly made some spam musubi, a warm slice of homemade banana bread and shaved ice after visiting such a beautiful part of the island is definitely the cherry on top. The musubi has the perfect rice to spam ratio and great sauce. The banana bread was moist, perfectly sweetened, and has lots of banana in it. And everything was reasonably priced. The boy who was making the musubi for us was very nice and friendly. I'm so surprised this place hadn't been added to Yelp yet. That said, let's start things off with that cannoli waffle (first pic) special! I'm actually gasping for air because that cannoli waffle left me breathless. Their homemade waffle shells are a work of art in itself, but that cannoli cream filling, which I'm going to assume had ricotta cheese in it, was absolutely sensational. The filling was velvety, rich, and sweet, and the ricotta cheese added a lovely mild nutty flavor. I also tasted a slight tang, so I'm wondering if they used mascarpone too. Whatever they did, they need to keep doing it! The chocolate chips not only added crunch but also added contrast because the cocoa flavor had a slight bitterness, so overall, it was very umami. Then they want to top it all off with whipped cream and caramel? Really! Just start a subscription service so I can subscribe. Years ago, in the mid to late 20th century, I was what was called a "Deadhead." I would follow the Grateful Dead around going to concerts, and that was different than going to a single rock concert on a single night. The Grateful Dead's following were hordes of hippies partaking 1960s drugs like marijuana, a tie dyed bouquet of unwashed, barefoot, flower power, peace lovers. But like many Deadheads, I secretly had a job, and when my time on the road with them had to end, I would walk, then drive away. Their concerts were so well attended that it seemed like it took forever to get far enough away to not be surrounded by long-haired hippy freaks. We'd see a show in Tinley Park and miles away at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago we would get on an elevator full of tie-dyed Deadheads reeking of ganja and post concert sweat. Well, decades later, here at Uncle's Awa Club, I looked around at the people who live and work here and thought "oh my, were they all at the last Grateful Dead concert I went to?" Actually, they're all too young to even remember Phish, but this is some sort of impromptu nouveau hippy commune.

We were told about "the best" hot dog stand by some other visitors at our resort. We swung by after…read morehiking to Papakolea, the green sand beach, so we were hungry. The owner/operator is there serving hot made to order dogs. He is closed Wednesday and Sunday (makes sense as his booth is in the parking lot of a church). It appeared to be a popular local spot, we were the only tourists, and listened to the local chatter. We both ordered the Portuguese dog, which is large, with cheese. He fries it right on the grilled bun. We took ours over to the local park, he wrapped them in foil for us. The dogs were $10 each, and we probably should have shared. For the pricy island, a good deal for lunch!
