A unique spot since they built an outdoor dining space right on their farm. Cute ambiance with the lights. Great view too! This was our favorite place to eat while staying in Oceanview. We loved it so much that we ate here twice in a row! Finally getting to this review after 2 months...better late than never! Every single food item was delicious!!! From the 3 course meal, cubano sandwich, carne Asada tacos, meat-a-tarian stir fry, they were all so tasty. What blew me away the most was their fresh Dragonfruit smoothie! They grow their own Dragonfruit there which is so awesome. The chef Kevin was personable and he even came by to say hello/ check on us! Some parking spots available inside and outside nearby road. There are 4 tables total and I called from the road to see if we could be seated, we got there before they closed and we were not rushed at all. Kevin, the owner, is super friendly and a very kind soul. Amazing menu for such a small kitchen but everything was spot on. Started off with a small caeser salad which was excellent. I had the Black & Blue burger, delicious. My girlfriend had the Cubano sandwich, I'm not usually a fan of this but I could eat the Tai Shan version every day. Cannot recommend enough. HIDDEN GEM ALERT: If you are within 50 miles of this place, *GO*. First of all, there's nothing else nearby. But regardless, this is a unique, delicious, laid-back place that you'll regret not going to once in your life. Here was my experience: It was *pouring* rain. Buckets. Like you get soaked to your bone on the way to your car type of precipitation. I was staying near the Black Sand Beach in Punaluu, and there is no reasonable restaurant nearby. I drove through pouring rain for 35 minutes, up a dark country road where I was sure "man, Yelp just got this wrong... there can't be a restaurant here, it's gotta be just a farm or something". And just like that, we saw a sign that assured me 1) they were open and 2) they served food. The staff there (such as it was! I think it was a husband, wife, guitar player and one other person) could not have been nicer. It was 10 minutes before close, and they let us sit, the guitar player played, and they served my mom and I some of the best food we've had in Hawaii. Didn't hurt that the rain finally cleared and there was a gorgeous sunset. Did I mention this place is basically a cute little joint with 10 chairs that has an amazing view of the ocean from the mountainside? Gotta love it. I had a cuban sandwich-- they did the thoughtful thing most people forget where you crisp up the pulled pork on the griddle, and with a delicious and tangy slaw and sauce, it was fantastic. Fries were salty, crispy and delicious, and came with a dipping sauce with some zip. My mom had some fish tacos, which she assured me were fresh and tasty. Topped it all off with some salted caramel coconut square. Noms. Nom Noms. Nom Nom Noms. Look, this would have been a solid meal for Honolulu or the mainland, but we found it in the middle of nowhere on the Big Island, and I couldn't be more thrilled. Because if it was there I'd have paid 3x as much, there wouldn't be an adorable dog nuzzling me looking for leftovers, and there wouldn't be a guitar player taking our every request even after we kept them open late. Chef was telling me how he came to Hawaii in 2016 and bought the farm at a farmer's market and just stayed. #livingthedream Can't recommend this place enough. We started with the Ahi cake appetizer, i had the filet mignon and my partner had the steak and mushroom tacos. Clean plates all we took home was fries. This place is magical. Firstly you have to be reasonable as to what to expect; there are four tables and one main chef. Depending on how busy it is, it may take more time than your average dine out experience. The staff is warm, diligent and accommodating, the chef himself making rounds to chat and visit, allowing me to lavish praise upon his craft. Live music most nights; the gentleman there the night I went was friendly and entertaining, willing to play requests...even learning a few songs on the spot in doing so. Overlooking the dragon fruit orchard, with the sea view in the background it was very pleasant for me to sit and relax, patiently awaiting the culinary delights that were being crafted. We were third in line as the tables before us were served, so there was a little bit of a wait...but as the saying goes good things come to those that do so. And of course the food.. at first taste of the house salad with the delicious homemade caeser dressing I knew I was in for a treat. As a side note when I go out for steak, usually I feel I can do an equivalent or better job at home... but not here, as pictured it was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, the quality of the meat, the care of preparation...just phenomenal. The vegetables delectable, the potatoes quite tasty...everything cooked perfectly. And top it off for dessert the best custard I've ever tasted, with the aformentioned dragon fruit, blueberries and whipped cream it was the perfect finishing move to a meal that legitimately left me filled with joy. Everything together inspired me to leave a review, something I have not done before for anything. Perhaps your experience may differ, as we all have different perspectives.. but much as the individual perspective of drops of the oceans' mist returning to the whole, I think we can all agree Tai Shan Farms is truly something special if you can spare the time. About 2 miles away is local grocery store and this is byob so stop off for a nice bottle of wine and enjoy their 3 course meal. Best meal we've had so far on Big Island! Tot waffles (5 stars): this was like making savory waffles out of Thanksgiving stuffing but with tots!! This was amazing. And then you add their magical mushroom gravy. Was actually happy that they'd run out of their sausage gravy by the time we made it over here because we were able to taste the mushrooms. They have their tot game down, really some of the best we've had- crisp edges, tender insides without being mushy Mushroom tacos (5 stars): basically, get anything with mushrooms. They use a local mushroom that is like a cross between a trumpet and oyster that has this phenomenal almost meaty but buttery texture and flavor. This also came with Mac nuts and their amazing sauce Smoothie (5 stars): it really lives up to its name and hype. Not too sweet. Great balance of fruits. Really one of the best smoothies we've had as well Don't overlook their baked items and desserts. Scone had a lovely crisp edge and not too sweet (softened on day 2). This is an amazing restaurant! Hands down, I feel it's the best one in our small community and, honestly, probably one of the best ones on the island. The owners are very kind and gracious folks who pour their heart and soul into their food and love sharing it with others. Last weekend, I had one of their burgers -- the Royale, which is pretty simple -- and while I can't really put my finger on why, I believe it was the best burger I've ever had! Yes, fresh grass-fed beef doesn't hurt, but it was unreasonably delicious. For such a small venue, there's a lot of variety so fish and seafood lovers, vegetarians and desert lovers can all find something to enjoy. Its even gluten free, though I doubt you would suspect it. A friend, who is not the gushing type, went bonkers over their homemade cinnamon roll (for Sunday breakfast). It's also the little touches that make me feel welcome and at home -- little vases of fresh cut flowers on the tables (like the special kind you might find on a flower farm up north), the view from their dragonfruit farm, and occasionally getting to say hello to their escape-artist pup. You might bring a light jacket as it can get chilly outside at this elevation. They don't have an alcohol license so BYOB if you'd like. It is very small so if it happens to be crowded, be ready to accept that to-go food might be the best option. If you are stopping through the area during their limited hours or if you live nearby -- I highly suggest visiting this little, beloved neighbor gem.
