I informed a waitstaff that we had a 6 pm reservation under my name and she disappeared. After a few minutes, another waitstaff asked if we had a reservation, which I confirmed, again with the time and my name. She disappeared. After about 10 minutes of waiting, with no communication from any staff, my companion and I seated ourselves a few feet from where we'd been standing at the entrance to the dining area, in clear view of staff coming and going. As my companion and I conversed, no staff communicated with us for the next 50 minutes - no updates on our reservation, no invitation to sit at the bars, etc. However, my companion overheard staff commenting that a party without reservations had been seated at a window table immediately ahead of us at 6 pm. At 7 pm, after being totally neglected by any staff for nearly an hour, I asked our original waitstaff for an update. She told us that we could be seated at an interior (no window) table that we'd observed being set shortly after our arrival and that had remained empty. Why we weren't offered this table shortly after our 6 pm arrival beggars belief. At that point, our patience had expired and we adjourned to Blue Hill to dine. Bottom line: unless you're a masochist who savours neglect, indifference, being ignored, and thoroughly unprofessional and inept staff, choose to dine elsewhere.

The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the small bathroom en suite. At only about 5 feet square, the shower cubicle is about the size of a phone booth. There are plenty of fluffy towels and hot water to compensate. Super fast wifi was a surprising bonus! Delicious home cooked breakfast included.

They welcomed my Rottweiler with open arms. Yvonne and David are both great, every step of the way! The cottages and grounds are friggin adorable. Like really, everything is so cute. We just stayed at Balance Rock Inn this weekend and what an incredible experience it was…read more Hotel: The hotel is a beautiful, old house with a bar, seating area, and restaurant on the bottom floor. Rooms are throughout the four levels of the house. Room: We stayed in 310, which faces the front/side of the hotel. There was a huge tree in fall colors when we opened the blinds. Bed and bedding was excellent. Bar/Restaurant: I can't say enough great things about the bar. Excellent cocktail and wine selection. Eating and drinking here felt like a private experience. Buffet style breakfast on the house every morning was incredibly good. I'm still thinking about it. Town: I'm sure there are a million other reviews of the town on Yelp, but we found it extremely warm and inviting. Several book stores, local artisans, etc made the top of my list. Maine big breakfast was the best breakfast during our stay. The town is an easy walk from the hotel, and you can get anywhere on foot easily. The Park: We could've spent days exploring. One of my favorite parks I've been to. We did the 'touristy' Jordan Pond trail- which was incredible and not a technical, but a long walk. Bottom line: We'll be back and we'd absolutely stay here again. Late October may not be everyone's cup of tea, but we enjoyed the small town Maine quiet.
