We drove all the way down on my bday just to be sorely disappointed and treated like an inconvenience. We didn't pitch a fit or act snarky. Our waitress seemed more interested in flirting with the cook more than taking our order. We waited 45 minutes after flagging her down multiple times and met with "I'll be right there" and "one sec".. then she would go sit at the bar beside customers and laugh it up. The other waitress noticed and apologized asking if she could help... then that turned into them having a tiff in front of us lol. We just wanted some beer and nachos man. I'm a sucker for a good meal in an old building! Kelly's Gingernut Pub serves up comfort pub style food in a historic building that used to be a bank. The charm of the old brick adds tons of character. We popped in for lunch on a rainy day. We tried a little bit of everything but my favorite by far was the chicken stew which was the soup of the day. It had the perfect balance of spice and comfort! Been here before a few years ago and here we are again. Beer selection is still great and the atmosphere in the bar is super casual. Their menu was and still is excellent with friendly staff. When we went, we waited a while for a server as we sat outside and eventually the barman took over for us. He was great and the food was excellent. Smithwicks is great but also try old speckled hen as it's fantastic and is hard to find on tap. Pro tip: ask for OSH as bottom part of Black and Tan. Flavour beertown.ahoy. I have seen complaints about service which are fair as they are sometimes short on wait staff, this is common all over still. Many including my favorite Prescott Brewing Company in Arizona closed this year after many decades. It's a hard business but Kelly's keeps going and making good food. Go and enjoy their great food and beer. Maybe grab a hat to keep the sunburn off, knowing you are helping a small business . read more

7/14: A wonderful lunch, with huge portions. We had a small 10 minute wait for my party of three. So we took the moment to walk quickly to a store and come back. Myself and my daughter ordered the BLT and my son ordered the cod sandwich. We also shared pretzels and a house salad. Everything was huge portions. The BLT was massive. I'm sure it was a pound of bacon between the two sandwiches. No complaints there. The house old bay mayo was a perfect match for this coastal BLT sandwich. My son enjoy a large slab of fried cod between two delicious buns! The fries we had were nice and crispy. Pricing was on point for the portions we had. The pretzels were soft, hot and the perfect amount of alt. The cheese paired with them was certainly delicious. Overall our entire meal was delicious and well worth the pop in. Service was quick and our waitress was on point and so polite. We happen to pass by in the evening and it looks like they do really good versus in the evening they have cute outdoor seating available and wonderful lighting to set the mood. read more

A nice cozy Irish pub near the beach in Cape Charles. They have a good selection of draft beer with some imports and local brews - I got the Old Speckled Hen and my wife had a Stone IPA. The crab dip appetizer was excellent. I tried the Fisherman's Chowder which was also great. I was definitely full after a bowl! read more

Our meal here was not great. The shepherd's pie seems like it's made with cream or milk (in the meat layer) which was odd to me and not to my liking. I suggest they mention it on the menu since this might not be appealing to some guests. I couldn't eat it. read more

This was one of our favorite places in Cape Charles, and we visited almost every day. In addition to having great Irish/English food, they had a very well appointed bar that included a lot of great draft beers. My favorite food there was the fish and chips, and I would highly recommend both that and the plate of onion rings. It's a very large place, and we were always able to find a spot at the bar, even on Saturday afternoon. The bartenders were fast and very helpful (my wife often has trouble finding the perfect drink). You should definitely stop here if you are in town. read more

Two stars for the staff. I felt like the staff members here were incredibly rude. I thought it was a one off until we called a couple of hours later and the hostess/waitress was still very rude. We were looking to sit down for some dinner on Sunday evening at 5pm - two children and two adults. We noticed many open tables inside and outside. We were told that we could be placed on the list and wait for 45 minutes. When we left, we received a text within two minutes that the table was ready. We had left and thought we would come back. By the time we got back in the car. Rude, unfriendly and definitely not the welcome face of the business you would want to see. We called back two hours later apologizing that we had left. We felt really uncomfortable with the exchange but heard from some others that the food can be tasty (not many options especially on a Sunday. We wanted to see if it was a one off experience. I do hear that the food can be high in salt). The waitress/hostess that picked up sounded like someone else but very very very rude. I am posting this business to let management know and be aware. Walked around town and ended up here and so glad we did. We started off with pretzel and they were so good and soft. They tasted homemade so I had to ask and they outsourced it. The beer cheese was probably one of the best, not too salty. My daughter got a kids grilled cheese and it was good potion with Texas toast grilled cheese with fries for $5 We got fish and chips and perfectly crispy and fries were well seasoned. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich after seeking for years to find the one I had in a pub, many years ago. This one came at about a good or even better. It was huge, and lots of meat which was tender and juicy. I loved it. I should have shared it with my wife because I could not eat all of it. Service was great, Sarah was very accommodating. A recent visit to Kelly's yielded the following: The bar was not well stocked (out of a requested beer and no ginger beer). Our server wasn't familiar with a "half and half" until she came back and offered it to us as the "black and tan". The food was nothing special by any stretch. My sister and I both ordered fish and chips. The fish pieces were all the same size and shape (indicative of processed fish) and were over cooked (to match the fries). Basic pasta and shrimp. Basic burger. The onion rings and pretzels (both appetizers) were pretty good. Dinner for 4 with 2 appetizers and 6 beers, with tip, just shy of $200. read more

Delicious crab dip and crab cakes! I was very impressed with the crab in this restaurant. Some places are more bread in their cakes, this place does not disappoint. On the crab dip, they were generous with the crab, it was not just all ingredients and no crab, which is what some places serve. All in all, great food, drinks, and service. read more

This classic Irish pub, a renovated bank, has great drinks and great food, and a fun evening atmosphere. Fabulous shepherd's pie and the coconut cake is the best I've ever had (it should be - an 80-something year old woman bakes it). The portions are very generous and the food is very fairly priced, with great specials. read more

AWUL!!!! If you want to be ripped off and robbed, eat here! Ordered fish and chips and crab cake sandwich. Fish was over cooked and a greasy mess, so asked to order a burger in its place. Burger was under cooked. Waitress brings bill and we are charged for 3 meals! Manager refused to remove fish and argued we ordered it and had to pay because their food costs are high! We refused to pay and ended up calling the cops. Manager still refused to take off inedible food and cop says have to pay for what you ordered. Customer not right about anything here! Wow! $70 for crap food! DO NOT EAT here! Never been talked to and treated this rudely by a restaurant. The owner should be ashamed! read more

What a neat restaurant tucked away inside what appears to be an old bank building. We ordered the steamed shrimp and they were perfectly cooked and decent size. The service was attentive without being intrusive and i loved that they had an option to tip the kitchen staff specifically if you enjoyed your meal. Most restaurants ignore their back-of-house staff when it comes to appreciation. Love that they recognize them and allow the customers to do so if they wish. read more

We ordered an hour ago. We ordered the special, oyster basket and fish and chips with a side of mashed potatoes. We have my 18 month old granddaughter with us. The service is also below average in that the waitress has not once checked to see what we want. Very disappointed so far. Just hope the food is better. It all started when my mother (Kelly lol) (I don't own the restaurant) was planning a trip to VA. Personally, I don't live in VA because most of my reviews come from up north and down south and I like driving far (don't worry my parents drive) so I get a chance to see other restaurants. I'm from the south (FL) and we decided to go to this restaurant while we waited for my relatives (who lived there) to get home. We pulled up to the restaurant, and my mother talked to the hostess to get us a table. It took them about an HOUR to seat us, and I get why (because it was busy). After that, they seated us outside which we were fine with, until we realized that there were flies. Like LOTS of flies. We got bit up so bad that I currently have 6 fly bites. (Yes they can bite those kind) We when inside after we waited ten more minutes. Then we went to the bathroom to wash our hands before we ate and it wasn't philthy, it was just dirty. The food wasn't my favorite, but it was ok. The server was not so nice also. I didn't catch her name, and after she took our orders she rolled her eyes. The other servers looked really nice though. We were just unlucky to have her. Overall, the food wasn't the best and the place was kinda dirty. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I knew. I'm sorry, but if you guys can fix these problems, maybe you can have a better review. I don't even understand why this place was so busy. I mean like really? Fix it please. I have hope in you guys. Came here Thursday night in April - large group (4 adults, 3 kiddos) and we were able to eat outside. Staff is friendly, but you could tell they were a bit understaffed. That said, the food was good - solid option for being right on the main drag of town - definitely loved it, considering I have no photos (we are too fast!!). I had the She Crab soup (delish!), and the Salad with Grilled Chicken (super fresh!). Hubby had the BBQ Burger (good, but he said it had too much BBQ sauce for his taste). Other adults had Drunken Mussels (he LOVED them), and the Crab Sandwich (she LOVED it). Kiddos had Steamed Shrimp and Mac & Cheese (both were gone so fast!!). read more

We ate there five times in four days in Cape Charles. Every time, at the bar: it's like the pubs in England, inside five minutes, you're a regular. Food is varied, it is good and it is (by comparison) cheap (in price; the quality is fine). The owner, Gene, is usually around (if not actually manning the bar) and keeps a good eye on things. Bar is extremely well stocked. Menu is varied. While Cape Charles has a great selection of dining establishments, with Kelly's at hand, why go anyplace else? read more

I am so glad this restaurant is able to be open and function well during Covid. They are following Covid precautions with mask wearing and having tables socially distanced. There is also outdoor seating. They have an extensive draught list with many IPAs and other beers. Friendly wait staff. I had the drunken mussels with white wine, jalapeño broth and tomatoes. There was enough sliced tomatoes and jalapeños to have some with each mussel. Excellent dish (!), very tasty & with warm rolls to dip into the wine broth. YUM!! read more

Every town should have a pub like the Gingernut! This is a great bar and the food is excellent also. Quickly on the food- they have a diverse menu that should deliver something for all taste buds. From casual burgers and salads, to finer entrees and excellent soups. You'll get that steak or whatever you have been craving after a day enjoying the town or water. The pub is as good as it gets. Great beer selection, superb drinks and efficient bartenders. There is often live music, there's always a dart board, and you can usually find someone interesting to chat up. This place is sized perfectly. Just small enough that it doesn't feel empty if there are only a few people at the bar, but enough nooks and crannies to hold a crowd. They're also usually open late which is very appreciated in a small town without much going on after sunset. It is nice to know you can walk in here at 1:AM and still find a party going on. Wow. Talk about a home run! Ruben, lamb Burger, fish tacos, and a kids grilled cheese. Every meal was great. If I had to give a negative, the slaw was good but a little dry. The Ruben was stacked thick with great tasting corn beef and sauerkraut, fish tacos are fresh and crispy, and the lamb burger was tender and covered in sweet goat cheese. Great selection of draft beers. If we ever return to this town, and I hope we do, we are coming back. read more

Dudes, here's the thing; restaurants in Cape Charles are uniformly terrible. It's not exactly their fault though; there are like four or five of them, and that is just not enough to deal with the number of customers. We ate here after an interminable wait. It was fine. There were cockroaches running around by our table. The service was actually pretty good, but I had stopped caring by then. I don't think it would have been better anywhere else. Stopped here on our way to the Outer Banks on a beautiful September day mid week. Pleasant seating outdoors within a short distance of the bay. Food was very good despite the great number of flies around. We sampled the turkey panini and lamb burger with the panini being large enough for doggie bag for later. We had lunch here. They food was really good. My fish and chips were excellent. The fish was perfectly breaded and fried - not at all greasy. Nice sized portions - two big pieces of cod atop a mound of really yummy pub fries. My husband had the Shepherd's pie, which he said was amazing. I order a glass of Sauvignon blanc and was pleased to see that they poured a really nice portion. The service was excellent. They even brought our dog a bowl of ice water. read more
