Yo, the internet homies steered me wrong! Shame on y'all!…read more I got the shrimp burger with smoked gouda mac and cheese. The shrimp were criminally overcooked, and the mac needed salt in the worst way. They didn't salt the pasta water (or salt it enough), and the mac was really sad, as a result. My friend got the soup of the day combo, which were were told was a "white bean and basil soup", but I'll be danged if it didn't come out with the most garbanzo-y looking white beans I've ever seen in my life. She said it tasted like they dumped rotel, chickpeas, and pesto into a pot and called it soup, and not in a good way. My wife got the smoked wings. She said the flavor was good, but they were brought out lukewarm and very lightly sauced (she's an extra saucy kind of lady). We got two cocktails, a cherry limeade slushie and a Kill Devil Hills Pain Killer. We were told the cherry limeade was made with just cherry mixer, lime, and vodka, but it definitely tasted like it had coconut in it, and my wife hates coconut. The Pain Killer I got was acceptable, but we ordered it with our food, and it didn't come out until I'd almost finished my dinner. The vibes in the place were meh, but fine (especially if the food/drinks were good), but the tables were extremely sticky across their entire surface, so either someone sucks at cleaning, or the finish on the tables was failing and needed to be sanded down/refinished. We did get a side of sweet potato fries that were pretty dope, but they didn't make up for the disappointment of everything else. 1 out of 5 stars; do not recommend.

I visited Southern Salt after a local friend insisted I give it a try. Sometimes local…read morerecommendations are hit or miss. This one was definitely a hit. To my surprise, there was no wait and plenty of available seating. The restaurant is much larger than it appears from the outside, with a spacious dining area and a beautiful covered outdoor section overlooking the water. Watching boats cruise in while eating fresh seafood is a pretty tough way to have a bad meal. Atmosphere - 5/5 Southern Salt absolutely nails the casual coastal vibe. This isn't a place where anyone is judging your wardrobe choices. Think shorts, a polo, and a healthy appetite. The waterfront views and incoming boats create the perfect backdrop for a relaxed meal. Cleanliness - 4/5 The only minor issue was that our outdoor table was still slightly wet from an earlier rain despite being under cover. Not a big deal, and I almost feel guilty mentioning it. The restrooms, however, could use a little TLC. They're overdue for a remodel and a deeper cleaning. Nothing alarming, but enough to notice. (Urinal looked like it has been out of order for years.) Parking 5/5 Parking is free for patrons, which is always appreciated. The lot across the street was partially full when we arrived, so I could see it becoming a bit of a scavenger hunt during peak hours. On a Monday, though, it wasn't an issue. Service - 5/5 Our waitress, Isabel, was exactly what you hope for when dining out: friendly, attentive, and genuinely pleasant. She kept our drinks topped off without us having to ask and even brought a refill of the hush puppies. Any server who delivers additional hush puppies is operating at an elite level in my book. Food Quality - 4/5 The seafood was excellent. The flounder tasted fresh, the shrimp was grilled perfectly and seasoned well, and both were exactly what you'd hope for from a waterfront seafood restaurant. The hush puppies deserve their own paragraph. They were phenomenal. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and dangerously easy to keep eating. If they sold them by the bucket, I'd have questions for myself later. The cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were also noticeably better than average. My one small complaint was the fries. They weren't quite fresh-from-the-fryer hot. A touch more salt wouldn't have hurt either. Still perfectly edible, just not operating on the same level as the seafood. Value - 3/5 Our total for two meals (with waters) came to $65.06+ tip paying cash. Given the quality of the food, portion sizes, service, and atmosphere, I thought the price was reasonable. It's certainly not cheap, but compared to nearby seafood options, it feels like a solid value. One useful tip: Southern Salt charges extra for credit card payments, so bring cash if you'd rather keep a few extra dollars in your pocket. Final Thoughts Southern Salt delivers exactly what most people are looking for in a waterfront seafood restaurant: great views, friendly service, fresh seafood, and a laid-back atmosphere where nobody is trying too hard. Aside from fries that didn't quite reach their full potential, this was an excellent experience from start to finish. Overall Score: 5/5 I'd gladly return for the seafood, the waterfront views, and, most importantly, the hush puppies that somehow managed to become the star of the meal.

It has the feel of a country kitchen with a very large bar almost running half its length. It was a utilitarian dinner but not worth the cost.

My husband went and found someone and then it took another 10 for her to make her way to our table. We ordered a soda and a beer and that took another 20 min. 1 hour wait for a diet coke and beer and both are so flat i didn't even want to drink it. I noticed the waitress (the only person i saw working the whole time) was talking to a table for 10 min. By now, over an hour has passed and we only have two flat drinks. I go inside to ask for a new soda because im tired of waiting. I see the waitress, still talking to the table, and then she leaves me waiting inside at the bar for another 10 min (20 min of talking at this point). She never acknowledged me and I was tired of being disrespectfully ignored, so I left. I am a very patient person, but that was ridiculous!! I can totally understand being short staffed. But at this point there were no other patrons in the restaurant and she simply wasn't doing anything but talking. All the tables were dirty, the bathroom was gross, the outside bar was covered in drinks and everything just looked sticky! Be a bar/late night club or a restaurant, but not both if you can't handle it!
