This will be a regular stop when I travel US-13 accross the Cheasepeak Bay Bridge-Tunnel again. Dennis is an unreadable greeter and waiter. He definitely made me experience a great one. My wife and I were on our way to our place in Myrtle Beach and were driving down Highway 13 toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It was lunchtime, and we passed the Sage Diner, which was packed, so we turned around and decided to stop in. This is not a fancy place, and it seemed like about 99% of the customers were locals. The hostess greeted us and seated us in a booth. Shortly after, a gentleman came over to take our drink order. We both ordered tea. I tried mine and didn't care for it -- it tasted like fountain tea -- so I switched to a soda. For lunch, my wife ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, which came with a cup of soup. She chose the bean soup. I ordered the prime rib sandwich, which also came with fries and a cup of soup; I chose the cream of crab. When the food arrived, it looked pretty good at first. My wife liked her soup, but the meatloaf was extremely dry and had a strange seasoning to it. The mashed potatoes were real, with large chunks of potato in them. My prime rib sandwich special was overcooked and came with cheese. I was expecting thinly sliced, shaved prime rib, but instead the meat was cut very thick -- about a quarter inch -- and was tough. The cream of crab soup was disappointing. The first thing you notice is a heavy spoonful of Old Bay on top. When I dug in, there was barely any crab -- just a few chopped particles, which didn't feel acceptable for cream of crab. I ended up eating the prime rib plain with some BBQ sauce just to get through it. Overall, we don't think we'll be returning. There were a few other places we passed farther down the road that likely would have been a better choice. read more

Sometimes a roadtrip need a stop at a local diner and boy did we pick the right one! Heading into VA for a wine pickup & tasting, we knew we needed a solid breakfast or lunch option before we arrived. Cue Sage Diner with a huge lunch menu and all day breakfast. We arrived to a packed parking lot and bustling dining room but were seated right away. Hearing the waitstaff banter with the regulars we knew we'd picked the right place. After perusing the endless menu options we both opted for breakfast - Hamsteak & 3 eggs and Country Fried Steak breakfast - both came with home fries (closer to hashbrowns than quartered potatoes) and toast included. The speed from order to getting our food was lightning quick, even with a full restaurant; I don't think I've had a breakfast order come out that quickly in recent memory so kudos to the kitchen for speed & quality. Great little spot for a bite, worth the stop. Pro Tip: Billboard advertising does work, we picked Sage Diner as our stop after spotting a sign on the highway! read more

A very big diner that seems to draw a large local group. We stopped for a late lunch while traveling. The wife got Tuna Melt with fries and it also came with a cup of soup. I got the Cheesesteak sub with fries and a cup of soup. Tuna wasn't what my wife expected but she finished half, soup and fries. The Cheesesteak was a lot of bread from the roll and a limited amount of meat. Considering the fries and soup come with the meal for a very fair price $11.99 for mine $8.99 for the wife's it's hard to complain. Waiter was interesting, very loud as he talked to you. Overall not a place I would go back to, but I can see how it's a hit with the local people. read more

More than just diner, good food accompanied by great hospitality, incited us to stay in overnight the ttown of Onley, on what was just an eat and go roadtrip scenario. My wife's crab chowder is the best chowder i have ever had, bar none! My prime rib steak was also delicious, could have been more rare but no complaints from me. Did i mention, friendly service? Does not get any better . Menu items are all good choices, especially the specials, all at good pricing. Highly recommend and when we return to Virginia, Sage Diner will definitely be a stop. read more

Have heard considerable about this place, and now can confirm it. You will feel welcome here, and that was the best breakfast I've had in some time. Delicious hotcakes and bacon. Its rural location isn't easy to get to, but if you're in the area roll in. The coffee also is quite strong. Very good customer service. Nice staff and customers alike. This place sets the tone, for a good stop before hitting the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. By all means go here, as a great value too! read more

I do not usually review restaurants except when I have glowing things to say. Today, I am making an exception. Do yourself a favor and just drive on by. We stopped for lunch today on the way back from the Maryland shore, and we were worse than non-plussed. While the waiter was cheerful and accommodating enough, it was necessary to point out to him that one plastic covered menu he gave us was also covered with food that needed to be wiped off. That should have been a clue. My wife ordered a BLT on white that came stacked like a club on three slices of rye. I ordered a "California Burger." The menu said it came with, "Lettuce, Tomato, Green Peppers, Onions and Mayonnaise." Given the speed with which it came, I'm guessing the 8oz burger was cooked well ahead of time, and kept warm in a tray of water. While the lettuce was plentiful, there was no mayo on the burger whatsoever. The onion and the green pepper were sliced about a half-inch thick. The tomato was two, small slices about the size of large dill pickle chips. To be completely honest, I don't believe I have ever had a more disappointing dining experience, and I spent the next three hours of our journey apologizing for having suggested stopping there, and for not having had the good sense to leave the minute the soiled menu arrived. I will be beating myself up for this experience for a good while to come. read more

This was a happy surprise for a couple of hungry travelers on their way to Norfolk. Our only regret was ordering a cup of the crab soup. Like most, we stopped by Sage Diner to get some breakfast while driving along US13. Everything was on point - the service and the food. Our waitress was very friendly and made sure that we did not have to wait longer than 5 min for anything once the food arrived. The menu pretty much has something for everyone. I went with a combo that included a piece of French toast, a pancake, eggs, and sausage. Because I'm a nut when it comes to pork, I even added a slice of country ham, which was FULL of flavor. Your traditional diner and obviously enjoyed by the locals as they were very busy. Wait staff was attentive. I had their Reuben sandwich (which is how I "judge" diners) and it was very good. I order a Greek salad,I never had a Greek salad that didn't come with olives, pepperginos, but it had a hard boil egg, that was a first. Lots of feta but I was shocked with the lack of everything that should have come on it. Who ever prepared this salad should read what's in a Greek salad. We recently paid a visit to the Sage diner for breakfast, and we were severely disappointed. I had eggs Benedict and my wife had the Belgian waffle with blueberries. The server was a very nice but could have been a bit more attentive. The restaurant was clean, and our order was taken promptly and was served in a reasonable amount of time. Now for the bad news. The eggs in the eggs Benedict were cooked almost hard and the Hollandaise sauce was flavorless. Even the coffee was flavorless. The Belgian waffle had 6 blueberries on it and no blueberry sauce. It was not even hot enough to melt butter. I can not recommend this restaurant. read more

Following Supertramp's advice, we took the long way home over/through the Bay Bridge-Tunnel. This allowed me to spy the Sage Diner for a mid-morning breakfast. We were seated promptly in a clean and inviting restaurant, our waitress served up our coffees in no time. Nice menu selection with specials also available. The sweet potato waffles are excellent and even though it wasn't on the menu, the cook had no trouble making my wife's "normal"... scrambled eggs, home fries and onions all mixed together. If I find myself along the eastern shores of VA, I'll definitely be back. read more
