Truly disappointed in the service here now. The only reason for me giving 3 stars, is because the food is good enough to make up for the bad service. First off, they are a small restaurant, so I don't see how hard it is to provide good service. Another thing, you can clearly see that each server is given 4-5 tables which barely seats more than 4 people. My boyfriend and I ordered a 3 choice and a 2 choice. I ordered the Chicken Katsu and Shrimp Tempura. My boyfriend ordered the Misoyaki Butterfish, Sahimi and Chicken Katsu. We both shared a Spicy Ahi Crunch Roll, which was amazing. My boyfriends food came out first, it took about 10 minutes or so, so we were both impressed. He was almost about half way through, then my food finally came out. When it did, my Tempura was a bit on the cold side and my chicken katsu was a bit chewy. It took about 15 minutes AFTER I got my food for our Roll to come out. The server that brought our food barely said 2 words to us, and definitely didn't look like she was enjoying her night at all. I don't know how this place stays open. My husband and I went for lunch and we were so disappointed. The wait for our utensils was crazy long. We had to wait til we were almost done eating to get our tempura sauce. And while we were eating, a family next to us (who were sitting there when we first walked in) was still waiting for their food! Turning into one of my favorite aloha Friday places to get an early dinner after a long work week. Food options aren't the greatest in Kaneohe but this place is so ono. I LOVE the mochiko chicken. Hands down. It's not greasy and the flavoring is absolutely perfect. The food also keeps well- you can bring it home and it still tastes just as good. The portion sizes are generous and you will have plenty left over. I love the miso soup too. Usually for a second choice, I get spicy ahi or ahi katsu, both also very delicious. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I tried the teriyaki beef and although the sauce was good, the beef was all fat and not enjoyable to eat. The chef did cook another order for me which was better but it wasn't my favorite. Will stick to the mochiko chicken- it's amazing! The food tastes ok. Just NEVER go to the bathroom there, if you ever want to eat there again. The Bathroom is located in the back of the restaurant. The first thing I noticed was how dirty EVERYTHING was. There was about 10-15 birds behind the restaurant. Once I got to the bathroom door there were 2 birds washing themselves in a pan of Panko. I'm sad to say I just started coming here about a month ago. I wish I started coming sooner. I was expecting a typical fast food sushi type of restaurant, but Kenko-Ya offers so much more. They have a very diverse menu of different styles of Japanese food, including tempura, sashimi, maki sushi, donburi, butterfish ect. When I come here, I always try to order something different. Their specialty is a bento box (two or three choice). The two choice is about $15 and the three choice is about $20 (not the cheapest place), but it is good quality and large quantity. There are also many different choices that you can have with your bento box, including miso butter fish, sashimi, tempura, steak, chicken katsu, mochiko chicken ect. The bento box also comes with a salad, rice, miso soup, soy beans, and bean sprouts. If I am not in the mood for the bentoI usually order their spicy ahi tempura roll. They have the best tempura that I have had on the island and the spicy ahi has a nice kick to it. Overall, this is a great place for Kaneohe to have, and I would encourage you to at least take a look at the menu. Wow, this place was great. We recently rented a house in Oahu for a week and our landlord suggested this little place or we would never have stumbled across it. My bf is a regular here and he's been wanting to take me here for awhile. We've come 2 other times and they were closed bc they were both Sundays. But we finally made it today! First we were seated immediately and a nice lady took our order and the food came out pretty fast. We both ordered combination meals and lets just say we were both shocked to find our salad was completely wilted, brown, soggy and old! No one can eat such a salad not even a rabbit or dog would. Someone actually took the wilted old brown gooey salad and placed it on our platter like it was nothing and put dressing on top! How is that ok? Plus, on top of that, my bf ordered the teri beef and shrimp tempura but they screwed that order and gave him butterfish and shrimp tempura instead. We told the waitresses about our issues and they took care of the teri beef which later came out later. The ladies kept pushing that they'd give us new salad. Does it look like we want new salad after we got old, soggy, wilted, brown salad? Hell no. It sucks but this restaurant just lost 1 loyal customer and 1 new customer to old gross inedible salad. The staff were also very friendly and quick with service. It's local Japanese style, not authentic. The food didn't stand out as much for me because I'm used to eating authentic Japanese food, but I think it's well worth it if you want a satisfying meal in the area. Out of everything we ate, the mochiko chicken stood out the most. The crust was very sweet but it went really well with the juicy meat. This place was crowed at 5:30 for a Wednesday! I was alittle surprised, but that's always a good sign when the seats are filled. It's like an American version of a Japanese fast food place except the interior is pleasant. You place your order and pay at the counter, but sit down and get served. This is a bit odd to me if you plan on tipping on your credit card. It forces the customer to tip before given the service. I guess bring some cash for tip to avoid this problem. I ordered the ebiten udon and tempura spicy ahi roll. It's not exactly cheap and didn't think the tempura was good. The tempura was not a tempura batter-- they used Panko which is bland and a different texture. This made the tempura taste stale. The spicy ahi roll was spicy, but there was way too much rice and not enough fish. The only thing I liked was the udon noodles! Cooked well, but I could buy that at any Asian market. The ladies who work behind the counter were all friendly and you can tell they work hard because they looked so tired. Kinda wish I tipped them more. It's rare to see that kind of work ethic and customer service nowadays. They looked exhausted, but they managed to check in several times with their customers. Been coming to this small place in Kaneohe Bay shopping center for years. Very good teishoku, sushi, and sashimi place with high quality and tasty food. Their sashimi is fresh and thickly sliced. I like their tempura and tontatsu. The main downside is that it has gotten a lot more pricey these days. Teishoku starts around $15 and you will average at least $20 per head here for dinner after drinks etc. Still a great Japanese restaurant choice on the windward side. read more

It's a Friday night and yes it is very busy, however the waitress comes out and asks if anyone wants to share a table. 2 two parties of 2 say yes and instead of putting them on the same table they seat on 2 seater on a 4 party table and the 2 other people on a 6 seater. Are you freaking kidding me?? They pass my party who has 4 people and take the other 2 people that was after us!!! This is some BULL SHIT!!! Maybe you should learn or teach that young girl how to manage the table service. Or better yet make the older Japanese lady handle the table. Great Japanese takeout food!!! The fried oysters are fried in some kind of mochiko batter, not the typical flaky panko batter. It works really well!!! The salmon is very good, the shrimp tempura is very good, and the mochiko chicken is also great. They give a ton of food and the staff is extremely nice and gracious. I live in town, where Japanese takeout is a dime a dozen. But combine the quality of food with the amount of food given and the price that they charge, I will gladly make the trip out to this side of the island anytime I have a craving for Japanese takeout!!! read more
