Takeout dinner in Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i... First to Review was in 2007... Wow... That's a long time ago! So, this Thai restaurant has been in business for almost 20 years! Must be good, right? Located at Windward City Shopping Center, next to Starbucks, Chao Phya Thai Restaurant is visible from Kamehameha Highway. Everyone passes it when entering Kaneohe from the Pali Highway. Inside, it seems rather dim, cozy, and cluttered. The cashier wasn't at her station. I waited around for her. She was chatting with some customers. Another takeout customer came in after me, but at least she cashed me out first. I called in my order: yellow curry (with tofu) and pad see ew (with shrimp). When I paid, there was no printout. I looked at the menu to see the prices. The proteins were an added upcharge. Wow. A bit pricey compared with other Thai restaurants... At home, I enjoyed my meal. My boyfriend saw this place and we decided to eat here for dinner. Hardly anyone in here. We ordered quite a bit, 4 plates. We ordered the pork fried rice, noodles, sweet and sour fish and seafood medley. We ended up waiting for a little bit because they had one cook so the waitress gave us free complimentary spring rolls which looked like egg rolls lol Everything was good but I especially liked the seafood medley plate because it had shrimp in it. Waitresses were really nice and promoting new dishes they had. Ambiance was nice and decor was cute. Plenty of parking up front and around. High recommend this place for Thai. I ordered 2 delicious dishes. The tom yum soup with vegetables as an additional add on. Yum yum! The citrus and lemongrass flavors really shine through nicely. I love that there was a generous portion of cilantro sprinkled on top. I usually get meat in this soup, but thought I would try the vegetables instead. Their entrées come with a choice of protein, which I really appreciate. I think I'll get it with the vegetables again next time since I loved it so much. The crispy chicken with the garlic chili sauce is always a winner! I love that it is flash fried and, therefore, not greasy. Also, there is just the amount of batter. I often times find in other restaurants that there is more batter than meat. Not so at this restaurant! I always request no MSG and low sodium which doesn't compromise the flavor but does help my dietary needs. It's wonderful that the service here is so accommodating. This was a hidden gem to find in Kaneohe! I had seen the restaurant for a while and decided to take some out of town guests to check this place out. Needless to say we had a great time! The chef stopped by to review our order and recommended we try the baked oysters (not shown on the menu). The oysters were done similar to oyster Rockefeller but was baked instead. We also tried their bone in prime rib and it came with sides of potatoes and sautéed vegetables (not on the menu). The cashew soup was smooth with a good flavor (not on the menu). The eggplant was also very good and the pad Thai noodles were perfect. Not too gummy and not too crunchy. The service was excellent and after dinner, the chef stopped by to make sure we were satisfied with our meals. Our friends were impressed and said this was the best Thai food they've had and I agree. The staff was really personable and welcoming. Great recommendations and went out of their way to ensure we felt taken care of. Food cake out extremely fast and the portions were a good size and really flavorful. We got spicy and it was just spicy enough to lightly tingle my lips, but not overly spicy to where it's not enjoyable. We will definitely be returning to this place, but although there's plenty of space and it's family friendly, it's just not financially sustainable for us to bring our kids. Quality food comes at a cost and it was just under 100 (not counting tip) for 3 plates, bowl of jasmine rice and water. Adding 3 kids to that tab would only be upon request for special occasions (birthdays, graduations, etc). Overall great staff, location, ambiance and food. Appetizer: Seasoned fish cake, chewy texture, very tasty, laid on lettuce and wanted another, but given only four pieces...needed to behave! Main dish: seasoned fried fish was fantastic, many texture (crunchy, flaky, delicate), carrots, basil, mushrooms, lettuce, asparagus, and etc. This an absolute dis to eat. Thai with a twist... the twist is there's no authentic thai ingredients and about 25% too expensive. My biggest gripe is the lack of Thai flavors, at a Thai restaurant... Ginger, Bamboo, Sugarcane, Thai Chili's!!!!, Basil. None of the dishes we picked that traditionally are packed with those came with anything. Chicken larb, pad se ew and Thai beef salad. The pad Thai was so sweet. The prime rib was super fatty and undercooked (I like rare and this was straight up raw in some places), the tako was chewy. Spring rolls were good and I didn't have it but the fish special was also highly reviewed by my party. The owner (? Owners husband ?) came over and chatted with us and offered us a shrimp dish that they then charged us (a reduced cost) for. It was good, but we simply didn't need it. Not too many Thai restaurants in the kaneohe area except for this one located in windward city. I've tried it a long time ago, but it is a bit expensive, even take out, but I noticed that everything is more expensive in kaneohe. Curry comes with choice of tofu, chicken, beef, fish or shrimp, but they do not serve any pork. Panang curry - 4 stars - although expensive ($13 + $4 + tax), this was the first time I ordered panang with fish since they do not serve pork like other restaurants. They have a choice of steamed or fried fish, and I ordered the more popular, fried fish with it. The bold panang flavor with the fish blended very well together, I'll definitely order this again. Although I asked for mild, there's still a chili pepper kick to it since it is, after all, Thai curry. Thai basil curry with beef - 4 stars - each meat/seafood is an addition to the plate ($13 + $6 + tax), this ended up a little too expensive to order again, but the flavor was bold and super spicy considering it's green curry. Warned my hubby not to even taste it. I think better to order with shrimp to make the price worth it. Pad Thai - 4 stars - they were out of pad see ew, so I had to choose pad Thai instead.. I thought this was your regular, but overpriced ($14 + $4 +tax) pad Thai. However, surprisingly, squid costed just as much as chicken, and it added a unique delicious taste to the pad thai. There's a slight kick to it even if ordered mild. Overall, their dishes are uniquely delicious even though a bit expensive. I'd order here again, but not often. Service - 5 stars - very friendly and takes time to answer questions. There were people eating both at indoor and outdoor tables, all in social distance compliance. It is conveniently located in the Windward City Shopping Center. Everything was fine for lunch in the past when we came in to eat. The service was welcoming. My experience with take out was less than desireable. The order took twice as long as they said for pickup on Sunday late afternoon. I ordered Panang chicken mild, jasmine rice, vegetarian egg rolls, which were ok. Unfortunately, the main problem was ordering a double order of the Tom Kha Soup asking for vegetables added and for the spice to be mild. They did give me vegetables and it had coconut milk in it but no Thai seasonings at all. It was tasteless and a waste of good vegetables. I was bitterly disappointed. I couldn't serve it to guests who all knew what the soup was supposed to taste like. read more

Great experience. Their service was impeccable. We got there and was immediately seated. The young guy helping us brought the menus and water. He came back and asked if we had questions. He suggested a few items based on our feedback of what we liked. We ended up with Drunken Noodles and Stuffed Chicken Wings. Both were excellent. The noodles seasoned perfectly while the wings came out hot and crispy. Back to the service...the server came back to check on us to see how we liked his recommendations, filled our water multiple times, etc. It seems like a family owned place. Wow! Totally blown away by this small, intimate Thai establishment that enchanted us with their imaginative dishes and special fruity teas made with seasonal local produce. After a wonderful day on Royal Hawaiian Golf Course, we started to head to the neighboring Starbucks, but this place's outdoor dining area (complete with comfy chairs and bistro tables... kawaii!) totally "called" to us. We originally just wanted a cold Thai tea so placed our order accordingly. My friend chose a traditional tea that the chef ensured had only the minimum of sweetness so as to enhance the flavor (and be healthy) as we requested. I needed to find a sugar-free, dairy-free option, and after a bit of menu discussion, the manager's eyes lit up and exclaimed with enthusiasm, "oh I know exactly what you would like!".... the result was cosmic! Calamansi ... never heard of this delightful mini citrus fruit before, but I'm sure all of you erudite readers have... she concocted a tea for me that was without sugar but flavored with calamansi and ginger....wow! Best tea I've ever had! She then explained that this fruit is only now in season and I came away so impressed that the manager would go through great lengths to hand craft a non-menu item for me! That fact alone in my book, rates 5 stars! After catching up on things we became hungry and ordered some dinner... I chose the ginger chicken which was bursting with flavor and capped off the evening quite nicely. My friend from CA tried the Pineapple Rice but reported that it was fine.
