Kennah Construction recently completed a full pool removal with engineer backfill project on our property. After doing much research on Yelp and internet, and after several quotes we decided to go with Kennah because of their experience, commitment to excellent customer service, stellar reviews, and we were not disappointed. Due to the fact that our pool was over 30+ years old and very oddly shaped, Terry(foreman) had to utilize 3 different types of bobcats to complete the project. Steve and his team at Kennah Construction were excellent. I was picky about who I wanted to hire to do this job since they would be tearing out a pool and extracting all the concrete around it. They would be demoing our whole backyard! Steve's contract was detailed and thorough. You could tell they have ample experience demoing pools. It wasn't the cheapest bid, but it was reasonable and I felt good about them doing the job. Our demo time happened to coincide with the heaviest rainy season in the history of California, so it wasn't easy. But Steve and Terry provided excellent service. Steve was always available to talk to about any concerns I had with the job whether it was small or large. When I told them the dirt needed to be regraded so that rainwater flowed away from the house, they did it - no problem. When I found a small crack in the driveway caused by their heavy equipment, they patched it up right away. After they finished the work they pressure-washed our driveway. It was a big decision to take out my pool, and from the beginning I was impressed by the professionalism of Steve Espenchied, who came out for the estimate. All my questions were answered promptly. The crew was flexible with my time schedule, as I had out of town guests in when the construction was scheduled to begin. It was rescheduled to the next day - no big deal. The crews arrived early each day and worked hard. They were very well coordinated and used time to the maximum. They pulled all necessary permits and called for inspections; there was no downtime. The only issue that came up is where to dump the soil and it ended up being the front yard due to the city not allowing soil to be dumped on the street. This was discussed beforehand though. Our pool man was alarmed at the rate our pool was losing water. To make matters worse, that water was going straight into the hillside. This was causing the hardscape around the pool to sink. We started getting bids for filling the pool with dirt. The first guy seemed very knowledgeable and had some good suggestions, but then completely fell off the face of the Earth. No returned phone calls, nothing. Another guy came and did his best to scare the heck out of us. He told us there is so much water under the pool and it is under so much pressure, that if we don't fill it with rocks while we're draining it, that it would "jump" out of its footing and cause major damage. We asked him to estimate what it would cost to do it his way. He never sent us an estimate, but called a week later asking "have you made up your mind yet?" Then there was Steve, from Kennah. Straight talk. He told us exactly what he would do, showed us the city code for filling it up and followed up with a very detailed estimate, via email. Any time we called, he either picked up the phone directly, or called back in a short time after leaving a message. No nonsense. He conveyed a sense of confidence that it would turn out fine. As it happens, we actually talked to 5 companies, and of those who gave us a number, his was lowest. When his crew came to set up and go to work, they were friendly, professional and efficient. They worked quietly, they took great care in preserving our property and it was easy to see they knew what they were doing. I could not be more thrilled with the work they did, nor the working relationship with Steve and his people. Truly, they made the process easy. They patiently answered every question we asked. We had a large pool and surrounding concrete deck removed. The job actually started a day early, and Steve's crew did an excellent and professional job. At one point we had three bobcats on site, trucks delivering gravel/dirt, and another hauling away concrete. They were very well organized and the inspection process was very timely. Kennah removed our backyard pool and all patio concrete in October 2013. Steve is nice to work with. We liked all of his crew too - very personable and easy to communicate with. Project looked great when they were done. Then we moved on to the project of new hard-scape and landscape for the backyard. We discovered 2 problems. 1. We intended to use the gas line for the old pool heater and extend it to a new BBQ area. Discovered Kennah cut it at the meter and at the other end and filled with foam. Now we have to install a new line at a considerable expense. This was never brought to us. 2. They say they will cut down the side walls of the pool 18" below grade. We found sections that were only 4" below grade. Had to pay the new contractor to lower the old pool walls for drain system, new water lines, etc. We were surprised to see this as we were told our city pool removal code required a much lower depth than what we found (4"-6"). Now we are concerned about how well grass, plants & trees will grow in the old pool wall areas. Called Steve to discuss and he did not pick up and did not call us back. We suggest you do your own inspections as they work to avoid these problems. read more
