When I started looking around for headshots in Los Angeles, I did so with the notion that going with an "affordable" (or cheap) option would be a mistake and I could spend $350 on a session with someone and get lackluster results that would make that $350 a waste of money compared to someone a bit more expensive but legitimate and highly skilled like Kenneth. I went through almost 20 photographers before using my intuition to choose him, and my intuition was correct. I achieved ideal results with his services, and two (out of 5 good usable ones) are uploaded with this review. I had never done anything like this before, and was pretty nervous. To make matters worse, I had the bright idea of taking nitric oxide boosters at the gym earlier that day to make my biceps pop in case I did any poses with a tank top (per his advice, I did not). You'll see in my pictures that I received 5 star/amazing results with him and I have actually dropped his name to people in my acting class but the reason I give him 4 stars instead of 5 is as follows: he reminds me exactly of some attorneys I've worked with who will look at you with lukewarm terseness with a look on their face that simply says "I've been doing this for a long time, I know what I'm talking about way more than you do". Just like those attorneys, he indeed does know what he's talking about I dont doubt him, but his attitude totally didnt help my nervousness in that moment... at all. Still- he took more snaps of me than usual (a lot more I'm guessing) and he still pulled it off. I would (and have) recommended him but keep in mind he's almost the polar opposite of a sugar coating type of person. At the end of the day the world needs more ppl like him who arent fake and keep it real but just make sure you're on top of your game the day that you work with him because if you're very nervous he wont berate you per se but he wont hold your hand either. Then again, he wouldn't be preparing anyone for show business if he did. Ken Dolin is not just a photographer, but an actor, and he approaches your headshots with the point of view of both, a very different experience from most. He does what I would call acting exercises and improvs with you as he takes pictures, and you end up being much more real and human and 'in play' rather than in a 'pose'. My pictures look much more real than they usually do, fewer stiff poses and more of a human being coming through. And he uses a lof of natural light in his studio as well as lights and great backdrops. He goes the extra mile. I haven't been on Yelp for years but I felt moved to come out of my Yelp review hibernation to write a review for Kenneth. I took photos with him recently and was so impressed by the experience that I wanted to share my thoughts on working with him. Photographing with Kenneth was unlike any other photography session I've experienced in my 20 years in the business. Kenneth is going to get you to stop acting or posturing or trying to present what you think people are going to want to see; at least he did that with me. He is professional, disarming, naturally funny, and he cares about getting you to be you. Sometimes, he'd throw a curveball at me with a suggestion that would catch me off guard and all of a sudden, I wasn't thinking or posing anymore, but I was in the moment fully- whether that involved me laughing my ass off or in some form of an intense moment. That's what he's after and I don't believe that's always easy. It was akin to be in an acting scene where I needed to be present with him- out of my head- and when I was, there was a genuine connection with him and the camera. I have the feeling he approaches photo shoots like a great director who works with each actor differently, giving them stimulus based on what will get the best from that actor. He collaborates with you. You will walk out of your session with not only stunning shots but you'll feel like you do when you go home after a really great day working on set- connected, excited, and collaborative. My shoot with him was not only a lot of fun, but put me at ease as I knew we had gotten a lot of great shots to use. Kenneth knows what works. My shots landed me a great theatrical agent, has gotten me in the door for a lot of meetings and auditions, and I've booked work. I hate to write this one-star review because I really wanted to like Kenneth, and I really wanted to like the services he provided but the whole interaction with him left me with the need to cleanse my aura and shake off the weird energy. It's a HUGE RED FLAG if a photographer doesn't show you the monitor between looks. His response was, "I don't show people because it can ruin their whole session if they don't like what they see." Um. No... I'm pretty sure it's standard for a confident and successful and respectable photographer to show the client the monitor, at least in between different looks/backgrounds (not after every shot, obviously). Bottom line is, he's incredibly unprofessional (when I asked how he met my agent--who referred me to him, by the way--he said, "I've never met her and I never want to"). I would proceed with caution if you decide to shoot with him. It's possible he just doesn't do well with people who are secure with themselves and not as chatty with him because he kept asking whether or not I liked him at the end. Shooting with Kenneth was an experience. As someone who doesn't necessarily love taking headshots, I really enjoyed the process of working with Kenneth. He was encouraging, positive and up-lifting. He's got a big personality and definitely cares about the work he produces. I really liked his style of coaching while taking the shots. It felt more like an acting session than it did a modeling session- which for me, helped to capture my essence through my eyes without locking up my face. I booked hair and makeup for my shoot and Kenneth's MUA was fantastic!! She was completely open to letting me change anything I felt wasn't me...however, in our session I was very open to her and Kenneth's suggestions on how light or bold my makeup should be.
