We found the store to be clean and always full of customers. My wife and I had several discussions with the store owner, Adam. He has been with Petland for 20 years and took over this store 3 years ago. He answered our questions on their breeders to include how pups were raised, space for them, transportation to the store, and the tracking of genetic defects. A number of photos with information were available on many of the breeders they used. I took Petland for their word and did not personally check into each breeder. A vetrinarian I play tennis with and not associated with Petland, told me he has seen some excellent dogs come from the store. We decided to buy two pups, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a miniature Australian Sheppard. The Aussie was vibrantly healthy and the Cavalier had the slightest hint of a puppy cough (which they made aware to us from the start and which they provided medication). The animal was cleared by their vet the day we brought him home. The dogs were expensive compared to buying from a local breeder, but Adam did some trimming of the cost for a number of reasons. I think the full range of support with access to a variety of pups, microchip registration, confidence in the AKC/APRI, their research into their breeders, warranties, education aids and the several vet screenings done on each animal, offset things I wasn't sure I would get from a local breeder. How long would it take me to truly be informed on all those areas? Petland employee Natalie, spent a whopping 2.5 hours with us the night we brought the dogs home, covering the myriad of details from food to fleas to potty training that needed to be addressed. All in all, so far as we don't run into any future issues that aren't handled properly, the experience was VERY positive. Most importantly, WE LOVE THE NEW PUPS!

Long story (and assignment), but left town with a hand fed baby African Grey parrot! Had been a big dream; never thought it would happen. Going on twenty years later, he is still doing well. He has led quite the unexpected life. He travels all over the country (and loves it.) He has adapted well to everything. Usually with good cheer and a sense of adventure. I am convinced that is due to how well socialized he was when he was little -- and hand-raised by Jo. This is such a unique place. A store, yes, but more a baby parrot haven. They are raised like children. And it shows. You would like to purchase a parrot? Not so fast. You will be kindly, unobtrusively, but thoroughly checked out. Do you know what you are doing? Getting in to? Understand the attention and resource investments? For your lifetime (likely)? Does the parrot like you? (Really, the parrot will decide.) They might refuse to let you leave with one of their babies. Understand this transaction is taken that seriously -- before you go here. Otherwise, the store itself has everything imaginable parrot related. Questions will receive knowledgeable answers. I even got my veterinary referral from Jo. It is really hard to find a good avian vet. (We're still going there. Even if we have to drive hours to get there. Worth it.) The store has everything you could need for a parrot. Cages in every size and shape. So many toys -- screened for safety. Any healthy parrot food. There are play nets and exercise trees. And ..... there are baby birds. Jo finds responsible, local breeders who maybe have one or two breeding pairs of parrots. She finishes the hand feeding at the store and socializes the baby birds. I am convinced this is why Dorian has never plucked, screamed, bitten, any of the usual parrot behavior challenges. He is a cuddly, curious, adventurous soul. Jo's Exotic Birds is a serious parrot place. Just understand that the parrot's interests are respected here. Outcomes are reliably better that way.

I expected it to be your usual plain jane feed store selling 2 brands of low end pet food & some poultry seed. Not so! They had multiple brands of dry & canned dog & cat food ranging from Stella & Chewy's to Fromm, to Zignature to Vita Essentials. They pride themselves on trying to sell mostly local products, including their bird seed, farm fresh eggs, honey, household cleaning products, handmade soaps, jewelry & canned items such as jam. The store is unassuming from the outside, but has charm & farm style touches inside that make it fun and inviting. I'd definitely recommend a visit if you're driving by.
