I don't relish leaving bad reviews anymore. Restaurants have a tough enough time making a buck nowadays as it is however, Ken's is one that belongs in the gastro-abusive category. Honestly if you know anything about food at all, you'd simply agree that this is the case. After two separate visits, we thought we'd give it one more try, just to be fair and boy, the old saying about fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, couldn't hold more significance. Here's a couple of tips for selecting a good restaurant or perhaps more accurately, not selecting a bad one: If their daily specials menu insert includes everything but the line cook's soiled underwear, leave. If the menu is 15 pages long, leave. If most of the positive reviews and/or photos are two years old or older, leave. If one of the photos shows hard boiled eggs that have green yolks, leave. How the heck do you keep so much food fresh to offer so many menu items? You can't, especially when your core business is breakfast. The wife and I ordered a Rueben to split, deluxe with two sides and we chose fries and a cup of soup. The fries were straight out of a GFS bag, no surprise there. All so-called "diners" rely on nasty frozen foods from Sysco or GFS anymore. The "cup" of Navy Bean soup I would call more a thimble. The cup was so small, we could barely squeeze the spoon in there to sample the wallpaper paste they call a soup. The sandwich was so disgusting, we both had a quick bite and immediately sent it back. Spoiled sauerkraut for sure. The corned beef stack was so thin, I doubt there was two ounces of meat. It was also soaking wet, as if it had been sitting in a pot of hot water and pulled out to make the sandwich. Perhaps steamed but given the lack of effort in producing what should be a diner staple, I wouldn't think so. Boiled meat has no flavor or color and this is precisely what we were asked to swallow. The whole sandwich itself was quite small, almost tiny. No thousand island dressing. The wife and I are no strangers to well made, tasty corned beef sandwiches. Ken's was one of the worst, if not THE worst we've ever had. If you can't make a good corned beef sandwich, you should not be calling yourself a restaurant, period. It's a diner staple. So, now the bill. The sandwich was $8.99 on the menu. We ordered it deluxe and got the thimble of paste and the food service fries for an additional $5.49. We also ordered an iced tea, which was so over-steeped it was black and bitter, along with a bowl of "Coney Chili" (National for sure or some cheap knock-off, yuck). When we sent the sandwich back and declined a replacement the waitress person said they would take care of us and they sure did, they took care of us alright. $17.89 was our final tally after the deduction! They deducted $8.99 for the sandwich, charged us for the sides, which we barely touched then we had to haggle the bill at the register with some obnoxious, pushy Albanian women that thought it might be a good idea to give us a punch card with three punches, how generous. I said "if we sent the food back, why were we charged for the sides"? During our negotiation process, which was embarrassing and humiliating, we noticed another order of Rueben's leave the kitchen and then we overheard a cook remark that the kraut was indeed spoiled. We also overheard the booth next to ours complaining about their food. This was our third try. The first time we left because we were there on a Saturday morning and it was so crowded and noisy and they tried to seat us in the middle table where we would be rubbing elbows with our neighbors. We said no thanks, we'll come back some other time and pushy foreign lady literally hounded us to stay and we had to high tail it out of there with what felt like a tijuana street barker nipping at our heels. On the second visit, I was alone and ordered some kind of Greek Skillet with gyro meat which coincidentally, was also spoiled, I was afraid to eat the food and I did eat about half and got sick the next day. How this place got a reader's choice award for best family restaurant is a mystery to me. They must have really stacked the votes. Maybe Ken's was once worthy of such a claim but it isn't now. Shame on this place for ruining no less than 3 dining experiences for us. Nothing worse than leaving a restaurant hungry and with a feeling that you've been pickpocketed. read more

The main courses and appetizers were great as always. They have some great fried mushrooms. I love their potato soup and lemon rice. Breakfast is always available and in my opinion the best thing to order there. You never leave hungry and always have enough to take some home with you. I love that they never charge for the many sides they give you. The service is always fast and friendly and they treat as one of their own family. If you're looking for for Old Overcooked food, this is your spot to go. I don't know what changed other than prices but it's gone downhill like a speed skier! Don't order anything on the specials sheet in the page protector, it's all stuff they made too much of, and they are really trying to get rid of it. Meatloaf has no flavor, the texture is like baby food- nasty! Want pasta instead? Be prepared for overcooked pasta, with a semi-decent sauce. The three of us went there for lunch and got there about 11:30. By the time it was 12:30, the restaurant was packed! And no wonder, we all had completely different means, and they were delicious! I worked at this place for a few months. From day 1 of working here I was treated so poorly by the cooks. They were so ignorant and inappropriate to the females that work there. One cooked called me a walking retard because I took the wrong toast on a accident. He would call me every horrible name you could think of. Infront of the owners who did nothing but laugh. I went to Patty several times crying over the way I was treated. She said cooks are always right. And excused their behavior because they are from another country.Finally I had enough and on my last day I had another server harasse me and scream at me. Till I reached my breaking point and I lost it and walked out. This place is so inappropriate. They hire 12 year Olds to bus the tables. They work them so hard and they rely on the servers to pay them out of their tips. They only give them 20 dollars a day. Sometimes they work all day. This place needs to be investigated because there is no way that this is legal. Every single employee besides the cooks complain about this. It's very sad. Ate here almost everyday for breakfast while staying with a friend in Memphis. Richmond is a small town so there are not a lot of food choices. This is your typical family restaurant where the best things here are the staff, and the food and the prices. For breakfast they offer a lot of choices for a very reasonable price. Why wyould you go to mcdonalds and spend 5 bucks on a egg mcmuffin when you can just stop into Ken's and sit down and enjoy one of their reasonable prices specials. The only thing i would not really recommend is the potato pancakes, since those were really just your typically mcdonalds variety, otherwise everything else is perfectly fine. read more

The service here is absolutely amazing . Now , usually in public places i am treated with disrespect just because of my age . But here , the waitresses actually take my orders and never get them wrong or rig them . As for the food , well , i order the same thing everytime i go here (adults cheeseburger) because i just cant get enough of it . I have had the ones from the kids menu and the standard menu and they are both delicious as well as filling . Stopped last weekend... we have always loved the breakfast & service , but not all employees were even wearing masks and we were seated booth to booth- no distancing (every other booth) like we saw in Traverse this week. We have been coming to Ken's for years, but recently were super impressed by their taking part in a give back program through our insurance. $25 of food for being a member and it was SO good! The portions were huge, it was cooked perfectly, and the kind lady preparing it was walking food out to cars with a smile regardless of some very rude customers we observed. We went for dinner Saturday night. Service was excellent. My 12 year old daughter has an annoying habit of picking off her mother's plate whenever we go out. This is a Greek family restaurant serving large portions in a small country town. Friendly waitresses and lot's of locals. It can get jammed packed on the weekends at breakfast hours. Don't be fooled by the name, this restaurant is a distant cousin to the original and legendary Ken's CK near Lakeside Mall but definitely not the same ilk. The menu choices presented at Ken's Richmond are unrealistic. Nearly a hundred choices. Almost every generic dish known to man is on the menu. After eating here many times I can say only about 25% of the menu is done right, the other 75% is filler. Very few restaurants can offer all these choices and make each dish stand out. I don't suggest getting too creative here, stick with basics. Or roll the dice. That said the breakfasts are very good. The Rooster Crow is legendary except the bacon is cheap quality. There's lot's of soups; some good, some not so good. Many are thickened with heavy starch (yuck). Also, things can get quirky here in the evenings, I noticed the food quality drops, many dishes are out and the cooking can be sub-par. Stick to breakfast. BOTTOM LINE: Come early. Highly recommended for breakfast. Generally speaking, the other dishes are more swill than soul. read more
