What took me so long to get here? I've talked about coming here for what seems like a decade. Finally, I made it. We met another couple and were supposed to dine outside. Sadly, we got a message that they changed us to inside due to possible rain. I understand, but it didn't end up raining and the outside area looked incredible. I added a photo. Oh well. That was the only real bummer. The service was amazing - pacing out all of the small plate dishes in a sensible fashion. We ordered 7 different things, and one extra arrived that we didn't order. Every item was fresh and flavorful. We definitely will come back - though not all the time as that is cost prohibitive. Andrew's Customer service was Attentive, Personable and Friendly and if he's working the next time we go we'll definitely sit at the bar!!! Rarely do I order 7-8 items on a menu that are consistently all excellent! We booked Selden for a dinner and were really impressed. The building has a dark, efficient, industrial feel but a string-lit patio out back. There is a column of vegetable/pasta dishes and a column of meat/fish dishes on the menu. Our favorites were the roasted carrot salad with harissa yogurt, the most umami charred mushrooms I've ever had, seared halloumi cheese, spiced beef kafta and juicy pan roasted chicken. Each dish was complemented by fresh, succulent veggies and garnishes that demonstrated the care and planning for each dish. Service was quick; everything came plated at a good pace. The only things I'd comment on would be the potatoes in the chicken not super crispy with a large dry mouthful, and the tres leches I'd probably skip. The tartare seemed Mexican-influenced with its al pastor flare - though the texture of the blue corn tostada was interesting, the actual tartare was phenomenal. The mushrooms were incredible and the perfect texture, with bold and balanced flavors. Don't forget to grab their housemade bread and butter, this was the best butter I've ever had! It was one of those meals that I enjoyed so much that I forgot to snap photos of all of our food. Selden Standard was the setting for an amazing date night recently in Detroit. My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner here, and I'm glad that we got to experience it. We arrived in advance of our reservation and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender brought us a glass of wine while we waited. It took about a half hour, but we were shown to our table for the night and promptly greeted by our server. All of the food looked amazing, both on the menu and with what people were ordering at other tables. We chose a variety of dishes - cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, squid ink orecchiette, octopus, mushrooms, and scallops. I would recommend all of them, but the standouts for me were the Brussels sprouts and the scallops. Flavors were unique and textures were especially on point with those dishes. Service was good, but we both felt like it was slow. There was a slight glitch in the beginning of the night where the host stand didn't mark that we had checked in when we actually had, which probably contributed to the half hour wait at the bar. We had another incredible dinner at Selden Standard, which will always be our number one restaurant in Detroit. We even got married here this summer!! So it holds a special place for us. Lauren took great care of us and encouraged us to order whatever we were craving. Dangerous advice, but we happily accepted . Warning - the ratings are real. They're not a mistake. We started with our usual cocktail, the Instant Karma (5/5). It is the perfect balance of citrus and salt with a light cucumber note. Clean, refreshing, and it pairs well with everything. The roasted sweet potato (6/5) is one of the best vegetable dishes in the city. The caramelized exterior gives way to a soft interior, and the crispy quinoa adds a subtle light crunch that plays against the creamy texture. The salsa macha brings a smoky, nutty depth without the heat, and the crema ties it all together. I had to physically stop myself from scraping the plate (actually they had to take it away ). The tagliatelle (5/5) with beef bolognese and parmesan was flawless. The pasta has that ideal handmade chew, and the bolognese is rich without being heavy. The parmesan blends perfectly into the sauce and stands out in every bite. The potato pierogi (10/5) were the star of the night. Soft potato-filled pillows with horseradish crema, apple, and crispy shallot pieces create this perfect sweet, tangy, creamy, and crunchy bite. Each forkful felt intentional and balanced. I felt guilty, because in my head, I didn't want to share with my wife, but I did anyways . The cruelty of having to split an odd number of pierogis...well played...we should have just ordered another one. We also ordered the smoked potatoes and the pan roasted half chicken with sauce au poivre (always 5/5 for both) The smoked potatoes, with raclette, and crème fraîche, are always a must. These winter variation was just as good! The chicken remains one of the most consistently well-executed mains in the city. I have tried recreating it at home with the cold pan method and it never comes close. Every time we dine here, it feels like four or five different dinner experiences in one evening. Ok so I saw this place on a bunch of lists and I am that kind of person so this was a place I really wanted to hit. When I tried to make my reservation it was early enough that there was wide open availability on the night in question. You do need a credit card to make a reservation and the trek downstairs to my wallet was a non-starter at that time but I made a mental note (and a phone reminder because lets be real, a mental note will not cut it) to do it at work when my wallet was within arm's length. The phone reminder pinged and I put in my credit card to make the reservation. I must have not gone through every single step because when I went to find the confirmation email a few days later, it was nowhere to be found and there was no evidence of the reservation I thought I made. FUCK! Fortunately there were still a few reservations available but nothing at an ideal time. We had to settle for a 5:45pm reservation at a communal table. It was certainly an experience. It's a long table you would expect for a large party or a private event except you sit across from your partner, flanked by two people you've never met. Be careful with the elbows. It felt strange but their drink menu helps things be less awkward (I ordered carrot on my wayward son with rum, coconut, lime, carrot, juniper, black tea). It actually came slightly in handy when the person next to me ordered something that looked amazing that then prompted me to order that same drink and subsequently enjoy it tremendously (one trick pony with bourbon, rum, chartreuse, hazelnut, pear, lemon). This is the order-multiple-small-plates-to-share kind of deal which I rather enjoy because something about it feels exciting as the plates slowly make their way to our table. I'm vegetarian and there were enough vegetable options that I wasn't able to get everything I wanted to try. There also were a fair number of things on the menu I literally had to LOOK UP which says something as I consider myself to be a "Foodie". We decided on the green salad (for the plumbing, as always-with mixed lettuce, sherry thyme vinaigrette). Delicious. Dressing was a touch bitter but it felt appropriate with the greens like, does anyone actually WANT to eat greens? Why operate under a pretense that it's supposed to be enjoyable? The greens were dressed PERFECTLY not too soggy but just enough to get some dressing flavor in there. I felt good about myself after this dish. We also got the charred broccolini and I also felt good about myself with this selection. I don't know what bagna cauda is from the menu but it's fantastic. Breadcrumbs provided a nice crunch. Roasted Brussels sprouts: so good. There were a lot of different textures and flavors in here: pickled Fresno Chile, feta (not overwhelming but just enough), date, and walnut. One of the best dishes we had here. Smoked potatoes: to die. Doused in raclette and creme fraiche, a delicious and creamy sauce contrasted nicely with the salty starchy potatoes. Our server was very nice and helpful, her companions were on top of removing plates as we were finished which was necessary given the fact that we were sharing the table and had minimal space. My glass from my first cocktail was removed and I was not asked about a replacement for at least five minutes which felt like an eternity and a little bit of bad practice. I came here for dinner with 6 of my friends. Overall it was a great dining experience. The restaurant is clean, decor is minimal, and the dim lighting creates an intimate atmosphere. Our server was very patient and friendly throughout and gave good suggestions. We tried several different dishes amongst us and they were all quite tasty. The Shrimp with Grits was one of my favorites as well as the mushroom plate. I was a little disappointed that they've taken the seared octopus off the menu as numerous people had raved about it in their reviews and that was the dish I really wanted to try. The one thing that could have gone better is that the plates were brought out at random times and not all at the same time. So some people were watching others eat most of the meal. The desserts were beautifully presented and a good size. They tasted as good as they looked too. The Pavlova was like air, melt in your mouth delicious. Being gluten free, I very much appreciated the amount of dishes that were available to me. On the picture of the menu, the items that I could not have are marked with an X and then there are a couple that could be modified circled. *I am not celiac, so cross contamination is not an issue. I love the ambiance of this restaurant - it had a dark and romantic vibe. Our server was so sweet and made the best cappuccinos! To start, we tried the beet salad and seared halloumi. I love the zaatar on the halloumi. Next we had the beef tartare. The crackers that topped the beef tartare had a strong spice to them so I would have the beef by itself instead with some sourdough if you are someone who is a bit more sensitive. If you can't find parking, there is a lot of street parking just make sure to pay your meter! Looks like there is a cute outdoor area too. Great for the summer! There are about 8 seats for the chef's counter. We were front and center watching 2-3 individuals grilling and firing up potatoes to steaks. It's fun to watch and guess what they are making too. This was our first time at Selden Standard. Our waitress recommended 4-6 plates for a party of 2. We ordered 5 plates which included the roasted mushrooms, the beet salad, grilled octopus, beef tartare, and the grilled walleyed. Seems like a lot but it was the perfect amount. Why three stars? Value - lack of. We had a resv for our party of seven. We arrived on-time. Our table was available on-time. Three 2-tops pushed together with one person (me) sitting in the aisle ... not what we expected at this price point. Thankfully, the bump & grind by the staff was minimal. Small plates. Noisy. Small portions. Noisy. Very high prices. Noisy. Excellent service. Did I mention it is a noisy venue? Hint for the owners: Invest in sound traps ... cacophony is not exciting, high-energy or vibrant. Rather; it is a distraction that diminishes the overall experience. The food is excellent! The recipes, ingredients and preparations are creative and left us happy. The portions left us wanting more. So we made a stop at Super Crisp on the way home for carry-out. Prices? Ugh. $45 for half a chicken? YGBSM. And it was certainly not half a chicken - it was less. Bar/drink options cover the all the bases with quality offerings, but not plentiful choices. Want a NA beer? There is one, count'm 1, available. I've heard great things about Selden and saw many high reviews, however, overall I would say the food made it only had a four star experience. First off, let me say, this restaurant was 100% packed on a (winter) Friday night- wow, we didn't expect that since we didn't make reservations BUT they have some standing tables to get a drink and wait for a table which was great because not only did we get to try a cocktail, but a table became ready as soon as we got our drinks! Service is excellent and it always feels great to be taken care of. We decided on a side of mushrooms, the cacio y pepe and the walleye. For some reason, they served us the mushrooms first (completely on their own) which was a bit odd and not as preferred since they were pretty good but quite salty so having them with our main meal would've helped. Then they served us the cacio y pepe & walleye. I would totally recommend the walleye as that was very good but the cacio with the broccoli mixed in was bit different. I love broccoli but I think mixing them together threw off the dish for me; I didn't love their interpretation of it. And again, the best meal I've had in the past year. Last year's was Selden. Of those places which I've eaten over the past year (Memphis, Boston, NYC, Connecticut, Cape Cod, a bunch of places in the South), Selden is the best meal I've had. Bar none. The standout of the meal was the cauliflower. Again, yada yada, devoted meat eater here. That aside, the cauliflower was NOVEL; who knew cauliflower and humus were culinary soulmates. It doesn't make sense on paper: it has to be eaten. The mushroom dish was excellent though not the world-stopping, second-guessing-what-ignorance-have-I-engaged-in-about-this-ingredient revelation that it was last year. Still, I should have ordered a second plate. The duck was punctuated, underlined, and highlighted by the mole. A white mole, not dense or overpowering, but subtle. Sweet pop from the pomegranate was appreciated, the duck skin crumble wasn't as present as I was hoping. If any of this is coming off as pedantically critical, I'm trying. Trying to find fault with the best meal I've had in a calendar year. And dammit, it's not easy. If there's one dish that I didn't stop me in my tracks, it was the octopus. It was good perfectly; the texture was spot on perfect. The sofrito was light: onions, cucumber, it had the feel of a salad. The verdict? Still the best meal I've had or could have hoped to have. Detroit is this well-hidden, low key food Mecca. The high church is Selden Standard. I came here with one other person and shared 3 dishes. I ordered the duck, the onions, and a pasta (I forgot which one) but everything melted in my mouth and was extraordinarily delicious. Unremarkable. Selden Standard came highly recommended, so we worked through a good chunk of the menu. The pattern was the same across almost every plate: good ingredients, lazy execution. Oysters were fine. They're flown in from Massachusetts and served on the half shell with mignonette. Nothing was done to them. Tagliatelle with rabbit ragu had real promise. The pasta was clearly fresh and well made, but the carrots in the sauce were undercooked and the ragu didn't come together. Octopus a la Plancha had barely any octopus on the plate. For $18, that's a problem. Smoked potatoes tasted like potatoes with a lot of butter. Good potatoes, no smoke. Roasted mushrooms were the best dish of the night, which is saying something. Decent oyster and woodier varieties, seasoned reasonably. Just okay. Seared scallops at $25 arrived as three scallops. Cooked perfectly, but three. That's a joke at that price. The half chicken was overcooked and noticeably oversalted. Good ingredients sourced well, then not much done with them. Nothing memorable, and the bill assumes you're impressed. The potatoes had great texture and depth, the walleye was light and perfectly cooked, and the fideua was solid but I wish they had rice rather than noodles. Dessert was fresh and not overly sweet. This is one of those restaurants where no matter what you order, it is going to be a 10 out of 10. I usually do not like fish, but we ordered several dishes including two with fish, and now I can say that I only like fish if it is at Selden Standard. I am not calling out specific items in this review because we tried a lot of them, and it was clear very quickly that anything you order here will be incredible. So just go for it and be adventurous. The place was packed but not loud, which is rare. There was a decent amount of space between tables, although a little more would have been nice. Our server had outstanding knowledge of the food. The lighting was low and perfectly set the mood, yet still bright enough to see your guests and the menu, which can be a difficult balance. I love when everyone from the hostess to the servers to the kitchen feels confident, cool, and easygoing. That was exactly the vibe here. Nobody rushed us out. Modern hipster vibe that showcase simple but beautiful display of food from farm to table. Everything we tried was amazingly presented but also tasted delicious and fresh. Our server was nice and attentive. When we ordered a second round of drinks, it took them a long time before we even got them. Some of our sides and entrees already arrived but not the drinks. She checked on them and it looked like there was some issues with the tickets at the bar. She did comp that round of drinks because I think we were waiting 20 ish mins for them. Drinks: Oopsie Daisy, smokey and sweet which was surprisingly interesting but tasty. Sides: Beets Salad - refreshing with a sweetness from the peppers. Bucatini - creamy and flavorful Roasted Mushrooms - woody flavor that was wonderful roasted. The creamy sauce paired well with the mushrooms Entrees: Duck breast - tender meat and crispy skins.
