This review has been a long-time comin'!! The backstory: I inherited a diamond from my grandmother that has sentimental value. My now hubbs and myself wanted to turn it into my engagement ring (even though gma said we could sell it!). So, living in the same city as the world-famous NYC Diamond District, we decided to check it out. I visited two other (highly Yelp rated) jewelry establishments. One (Ultimate) quoted me at $8000 for just the setting, the other (Jangmi), advised against the style I wanted, saying the ring would be uncomfortable. Obviously, I wasn't pleased with either of these situations. The story: So then we stumble across Mr. Mike Bouregy at Kent NY. He tells us "no problem," whenever I say what I want. You want trillion side stones? No problem! You want rose gold? Sure! Thin band? Low setting? You got it. After all, if we're building a ring, it should pretty much be EXACTLY what you envision, right? Right. So he tells us to come back soon so we can check out the sidestones next to my diamond. When we return, he has three pairs of matching diamonds to go with mine. We choose a pair. Next, we return in a week to see the mock-up, or mold, with the diamond placed in it, so we can approve. Lastly, we go in to pick it up. It is PERF. The end: It's the ring of my dreams (see photo)! I was in charge of every step, but Mike was there to lead us through. It was a painless process (except on hubby's credit card), and dare I say, fun?! Post script: We also did hubby's wedding band at Kent NY, and Mike painstakingly took all the components my hubbs liked and created a masterpiece. Engraving? You got it (free!)! Well I looked at all the positive revenues online and decided to visit Kents of New York while I was in town on business. My purpose was to buy my wife a full diamond and platinum eternity ring. They are very helpful and friendly staff as would expect from a shop selling high end jewellery. Well my ring was certainly NOT high end. In fact it was so low end it should have been sold from Canal Street. The ring was to small so they very kindly enlarged it for me that day, reassuring me that it still had a good two sizes left if it was still to small. I presented the ring to my wife on our 10th wedding anniversary back at home in the UK. It was slightly to small and a bit scratchy. When I took it to my jeweller to be sized I was taken a back by their response. "A full platinum eternity ring has to be custom made to the finger." To size a full eternity ring you reduce the metal and the diamonds can then move and possibly fall out. The roughness my wife felt was the diamonds already sticking out below the platinum. The workmanship was shoddy under a close spy glass inspection with rough edges and torn platinum. Not sure if this was done at the resizing stage in America or it was like that from the start. WTF????? So I'm left in a UK shop with a useless US ring which doesn't fit my wife's finger. Guess who was not happy????? What can a husband do at this point? Send it back to America? Throw it in the bin? Get the whole ring remade? Yip you've guessed it, I had to have the ring remade from scratch. 3 months later my wife has a beautiful eternity ring on her finger but with no thanks to Kents. I can't recommend Kent Jewelers enough! I went there on a recommendation from friends, and it's the only jewelry store I'll go to in New York. I brought in my grandmother's 75 year old engagement and wedding band to be resized. It was a bit banged up and bent, and they not only resized it, but reshaped and polished it perfectly - it is back to its former glory! We are two PhD students = a tight budget + a thorough research habit on EVERYTHING, hence we are not the easiest customers. We visited the diamond district multiple times. Round 1, out of 10 shops, we found the 3 most friendly ones. Kent was one of them. They treat you nicely, unlike many of other shops where you can meet hungry vampires. If you have visited the area as a couple, you know what we mean... Round 2, 4C's, and ring fittings. Diamond business is clearly complex. Although none of the customers wants to know the complexity of it, it is certainly beneficial to study a little what are these C's and fittings. If you don't want to be bothered with the details, there is a good rule to spot great shops. Always make notes for yourself about what you have agreed on with the store. If they change any bits of the items you agreed on, it's usually fishy. Kent New York always had good notes of what we want and completely consistent with our notes. Round 3, certificates. Some stores claim that they have the diamonds with GIA certificates. But when you ask for the certificates, they can only show the copies of them. We stayed away from these stores. At Kent New York, they always have the original certificates. They even let us use the microscope to see the laser code on the diamond. We will post a photo of it. It was pretty cool! After 3 rounds, Kent New York was a clear winner!! They custom-made the engagement ring with the design we found. We will post a photo of it too! These are objective measures. On the subjective side, we loved Greg! He was so nice, patient and knowledgable. Mind you, we had MANY questions! LOL Actually everyone at the store was very nice! I want to add to my wife's review about our joint experience with Kent because blaming the victim is unacceptable and to protect others from getting into a similar situation. In essence, we had a sapphire stone that was valuable both materially and emotionally to us, and went to Kent to put it on a ring setting. After my wife put on the ring just a few times, one of the four prongs that hold the stone broke off and we lost the stone, as simply as that. Kent claimed that it was an accident; however that is highly unlikely, as my wife wears many other rings for much longer (e.g she has had her Tiffany's engagement ring on her hand non stop for 12 years with no incident) and nothing like this has ever happened. Also, this happened on the 3rd or 4th time my wife put it on, which again makes it extremely unlikely it was a random accident, let alone the fact that when that this happened while we were just hanging out at a garden cocktail party . The worst part of this is not admitting any fault and blaming the victim. When you buy a brand new ring, you put it on 3 times and the stone falls off, while your other rings are holding on just fine, how can you deny the obvious? At the very least, admit you screwed up, apologize and don't blame your customer! read more

Let me preface this review by letting you know I did my homework. I also did a lot of fieldwork by speaking with over 20 jewelers. I received quotes that ranged in pricing, the most expensive being over 7 times what Greg from Kent Jewelry offered. I also compared pricing vs. quality and ended up with Greg because he was personable and honest but most importantly, the quality of workmanship was salient. He made the process so easy that I was waiting for the other shoe to drop...it never did :) I went in for a custom engagement ring setting and a matching wedding band. It was over the holiday season but he was still able to fabricate the rings ahead of schedule. Greg told me that his jeweler could set the stone on the spot, which was reassuring. (I had been to several other jewelers who had informed me that I would need to pay an additional fee for handling a stone that wasn't purchased in stores and they kept wanting to keep my stone. I had heard that some shady places will switch out your stone for a lower valued stone so I was pretty wary of these places.) Also, it was great that they had a local point of contact for turn around times and also for adjustments if needed Once Greg measured the stone for the setting, he told me to "put that thing away!!" lol I appreciated Greg's clarity and humor. I am absolutely thrilled about my experience at Kent New York. I was having a hard time finding an engagement ring for my partner. I found most of the engagement rings for men to be clunky, plain, and poorly designed. I found a beautiful ring on johnhardy.com, but the band was only 4mm and had only .4 karats of diamonds. The price of that ring was $3000. I decided to explore the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan. I did some research on Yelp and found a few jewelers to check our that we're highly rated. Walking around the Diamond District was an overwhelming experience. People would harass you to get your attention. Most jewelers said that they could replicate the ring, and offered various prices to do so. Finally I arrived at Kent New York and all of my worries and annoyances drifted away. Greg was behind the counter. He warmly greeted me as I approached. I checked out his selection of men's diamond rings and was pleased with his selection. But my heart was set on the design from John Hardy. Greg said that he could replicate the ring and also suggested a larger band and more diamonds. We agreed to a 5mm band with 55 diamonds weighing 1.04 karats. The price was $2000. I paid a 25% deposit and returned to get the rind two weeks later. When I arrived to pick up the ring I was blown away. I was more beautiful than the one featured on John Hardy. The extra millimeter made a world of a difference. On top of that, he also gave me two boxes for it, one with a small light that would be perfect for a proposal at night. My fiancé made multiple trips into Manhattan's diamond district to find the perfect engagement ring and eventually decided to go with Kent since they only carry GIA certified diamonds, they were not pushy, and they did not seem to upsell their inventory (through much research he had a good working knowledge of what to look for in stones and how to correlate that with value before he began shopping). Over multiple visits my fiancé worked with Nick, who was extremely patient during the long process. My fiancé was shown a number of loose stones and when he wasn't satisfied, within minutes Nick was able to get more stones in from another location on the block for him to look at on the spot. From there, Nick created a custom platinum diamond pavé setting by handpicking the diamonds around the band so they matched the solitaire diamond, and did so at a lower cost than other jewelers had quoted (other stores in the area tacked on additional costs for similar custom settings which sounds ridiculous to me). The ring was ready as promised and turned out beautifully! For me, it is extremely convenient that Kent is 2 stops from my office whenever I want a cleaning (free cleanings for life) and I was able to get the ring sized within 20 minutes. Please please do not get tricked by these salespeople like I did. And especially watch out for Greg. They are not experts on jewelry and will do anything they possibly can to make a sale. I had purchased a diamond for my fiancé and wanted her to pick out her own setting. We visited several stores but ultimately ended up going with Kent because we trusted their #2 rating on Yelp. What a mistake that was! Greg, the older man with glasses (who I would not be surprised if he was a former used car salesman) made promise after promise he couldn't keep. He promised us it would be ready in 2 weeks. It was not until I reached out to him after the 2 weeks that he told me it would be another 2 weeks. When we finally got the ring, it was the most hideous thing my fiancé had ever seen and wasn't anything like what we had agreed on. Not to mention this was also on Valentine's Day. My fiancé was devastated and pissed. Another 4 weeks later, (and again we were promised 2 weeks!), Greg told us it was ready. It looked better but again, the people that Kent outsource the ring making to, do very shoddy work. When transferring the diamond to the ring, they sent us to someone they use, who they call the 'artist'. I was absolutely stunned when we asked the 'artist' to do a Tiger claw, and instead he did balls. I thought about putting up a stink but at that point wanted to be done with Greg and Kent. The ring is going to need to be redone entirely. In addition, if Greg tells you he will take off the taxes if you pay cash, he is lying. You of course have to run the gauntlet from all of the high-pressured sales people standing outside their shops but it was totally worth it to get to this place. I read about Nick on their reviews and he totally lives up to his reputation. He helped us pick out the perfect ring for my soon-to-be fiancé with a no pressure, no stress approach. He showed us a variety of rings and always had a smile on his face and never once felt that we were wasting his time; a total professional through and through. They had a wide selection to chose from and and she finally settled on a beautiful twist style that was very reasonably priced and absolutely perfect (and who am I to complain? Happy wife = happy life!). We had the stone so it just needed to be set which took no more than an hour. My husband purchased my engagement ring from Kent New York 5 years ago- He asked me in advance for ideas of what I like and don't like for engagement ring and I wasn't sure of anything aside from a dainty/extra thin band. What he custom designed for me with Kent's was a stunning oval cut center diamond on an extra thin white gold band and the band has teeny tiny diamonds on either side. I love it sooo much- even to this day! However- I need to also include slight con about this ring: between having a very very thin band, my job is very hands on and I work with kids, and not always being as careful as I should be- I've needed to return to Kent to have them replace some of the tiny diamonds that are on my band over time. I believe I've been back three times total since getting engaged 5 years ago. This isn't a huggge problem for me because we live just outside the city and it's pretty close to grand central- but if ever we move off of the east coast or just a weekend trip away, I'll be pretty frustrated. This is mostly a fair warning and tip if you're in the market for engagement rings because Kent Jewelers is *always* more than willing to fix the issue and never ever treats me poorly or makes me feel unwelcomed. They jump up, apologize and fix it and clean it so it looks as gorgeous and shiny as the day I got engaged. I wanted a dark-colored wedding band and it was suggested by Kent that I purchase a "black rhodium" ring. However, I was not told before purchasing the ring that this type of coating is very delicate and that it cannot withstand regular use without showing noticeable scratches through the black rhodium coating to the original color of the ring. My friend purchased a nearly identical ring with the same coating and it showed noticeable and significant scratches by the end of his wedding day, within hours of first putting the ring on. If I had known before purchasing that the coating was so delicate, I would not have made this purchase. The staff are very nice, but I wish I had done my own research before relying on their representations about this coating. read more

Despite all the other shops being closed, Kent was bustling with couples and individuals looking at rings. After a 15 minute wait, we were greeted by a lady who assisted us in finding a setting. It seemed that once she realized we were serious buyers, she beckoned the help of a gentleman named Greg to further assist us in our impossible task of finding the perfect setting. We showed Greg our stone and he gave us several trays of rings to rummage through. I felt quite at ease picking up and setting aside the ones I liked and Greg did not rush us at all. He even went to different cases to show us unique and beautiful settings that you normally wouldn't come across. After much deliberation, I fell in love with a gorgeously simple yet timeless setting. They didn't have a platinum version in stock, but Greg custom ordered one for us. The price he set was very reasonable and I didn't feel like I was being haggled. A week later, my fiancé picked up the setting and had our stone set at the same time. A month later, we were engaged! Thanks Greg for making the process so smooth and easy. Phenomenal experience! My (now) fiancé and I went to pick out the perfect ring...because what can I say, I am a bit of a control freak. My boyfriend and I just went to Kent Jewelry today to look at future engagement rings, and walked out with a deposit left on my dream ring! Michael was so helpful and knew exactly what we were looking for by listening to our wants and needs. This was not the same experience at other stores. We walked into the store on the corner of 47th and 5th and were immediately shooed away because we weren't 100% sure of what we wanted. They told me to sit down and then said an appointment was coming in and that they couldn't help us. I felt embarrassed in front of the other customers and was afraid that the rest of the diamond district shops would be the same. Luckily, that was not the case and I couldn't be happier with Kent. My bf should get the ring in a few weeks, but the actually forthcoming proposal is still a surprise. I really recommend these guys. I'm not the easiest customer to deal with (indecisive and I love negotiating, haha), but Mike and the team at Kent were extremely patient, knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with. First off, they have a sense of humor, which I appreciate. Second, they have great products, workmanship and pricing (yes, this probably should be first). I'm not going to get into what I paid, but they made my (now) wife a beautiful 2.5 carat wedding ring, which still looks fantastic, and for a girl who wears a size 3, its no small feat to design a really sturdy clasp, so that I know that rock isn't going anywhere. The big thing you need to know about these guys is A) They will take great care of you after you've become a customer. No questions asked, I can get my rings polished, cleaned, whatever. I'll come in there and before I've had a chance to say anything, he's already offering. B) They will cut the b/s and just give you a great deal on whatever else you need. After the wedding ring, I needed 2 bands (she said yes!). I like to be informed, so I went to a bunch of places first, before I went back to Mike. His price was 50% less than what these other chumps were offering me, and there was no fuss. I'm pretty sure he sold me the extra rings close to margin, just as a thanks. Nick was great. I purchased a ring for my fiancé over Christmas. I new exactly what I wanted when I went to the diamond district. After searching several stores and shops, I came across two that could make the ring exactly how I wanted it. My deciding factor came down to this being a special gift. My now-fiance and I walked in on a Saturday morning and met Nick, who was very welcoming--- even though we admitted it was our first day ring shopping and we didn't know what we wanted. He asked about my style, what we thought we wanted, and he helped us-- didn't rush us--- through the process. He was also very helpful/ patient about showing us the variety of sapphire colors, and I appreciated that he didn't try to up-sell us. Okay so... walking along 47th Street in New York can be quite the challenge, especially if you are a diamond junkie like me. It's the "be all and end all" of jewelry - more diamonds and gold (not to mention sapphires, emeralds, rubies, well, you get the picture) than anywhere in the USA, all conveniently located on one long street. The problem, of course, is where to shop. With so many choices, so much bling assaulting your every step, it is very easy to get both overwhelmed and sidetracked. Some merchants hawk their wares on the street, enticing you to come in and look. Some stores are hidden up flights of stairs. Others have austere store fronts, reminiscent of Graaf or Bulgari or Winston's. There is something surreal about the entire experience once your brain starts to register the pure absurdity of so much expensive jewelry in such a confined area. And all of it looks amazing. But, unfortunately, not all of it IS amazing - some of the diamonds are treated, some of the prices wildly inflated, some merchants less reputable than others. That is where Kent Jewelers steps in. My mother told me about them, and as she is the paragon of all things bejeweled, I trust her judgement. I was looking for something specific, and was referred to one of their salespeople, Greg. He showed me some heart-stopping pieces, and then showed me pieces more in my price range, and then some pieces below my price range. The entire time he was courteous, friendly and completely low-key, i.e., no hard pressure to buy, just helping me enjoy the whole experience of looking and trying on. I wasn't quite ready to buy so left and went to a museum, but had a hard time forgetting about one piece in particular so I went back at the end of the day. Before buying I decided to compare what I had seen and what others were offering. After a few other stores, I realized that not only was the quality at Kent superior, but their price was too. I headed back to Kent and bought what is now one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. Oftentimes after buying an expensive item I would suffer pangs of regret - did I get ripped off? Is it really the quality they said? Did I overpay? Not at Kent. I knew that not only had I purchased a great necklace, but had paid a fair price. It was a great feeling. And you know what? When hubby wants to buy me a new pair of earrings? I now (finally!) know where to send him. read more
