Extremely unwelcoming, overcharged me, sabotaged my wheel & then proceeded to insist i buy a whole new wheel from them . Ive been here twice before and both times was told my spoke replacement would be 40$. This payday i brought my wheel and was "helped" by a shorter balding man ( not that it matters i just didnt get his name and thats how he looked) he tried to charge me 77$ to replace 1 spoke even after i was told previously it would only be 40$ max . After asking why it was so much he responded with a spoke replacement cost 60-77$ which contradicts the price i was told not only once but on 2 separate occasions . I decided to just pay the price as it might have went up within the past few days since i last came in. Then after i got a text saying my rim was laced incorrectly and they suggested i buy a new wheel from them . They didnt know i have pictures of the wheel before i brought it in & not only did they replace my 1 missing spoke they also swapped the position of another spoke to make it appear it was laced incorrectly. I just got the wheel in the mail and have photos that it was in fact laced correctly to begin with . Another wierd sales tactic to convince me i needed a whole new wheel . Super bad vibe today as i felt i was mistreated & taken advantage of . Why would i be treated any different than other customers? Not sure although i am hispanic and its not the first time someone has treated me less because my race . Needless to say I will not be supporting this shop again . read more

I bought a pair of handle bar grips, and returned them, because I saw they had a better ergonomic pair that felt like a dream, after installing. Thomas is excellent & very friendly. He switched out my handlebars, installed the grips within less than an hour. Very friendly staff. During the shelter and stay order they are accepting walk ins in safe manner by allowing only one customer in the shop at a time. They were extremely friendly and welcoming where many other shops have been rude and pretentious when it comes to cycle repairs when I have called them or attempted to walk in. My pedal broke and I was unable to remove it with my home tools, they we willing to remove it, I wanted to support the business and purchased a new set. $5 installation and they had it ready in 15 minutes. Came in with my husband and was greeted by a "What do you want?" from Rich. I was relayed over to Claire who was amazing and helped me try out a new bike. I fell in love with it and would have spent the $450 but felt heavy hearted supporting someone I don't like. ‍ Dude probably had a bad day but I've actually been to this store once before maybe two years ago. He had the same attitude. It really doesn't fall in line with his other reviews as his customers seem to adore him. Posting a review so I don't make the mistake of coming back. Obviously we are not welcomed there. I bought a brand new bike from the Community Cycling Center for $500 and you should do the same. I have not actually been to KCR, but I came here to write a review for one of their star employees, Skyler, who's been picking up shifts at North Portland Bike Works. Recently, I shipped my bike back to Portland from Indiana, and it was unfortunately damaged during transit. Skyler was working at North Portland Bike Shop and happened to be the guy who unpacked my bike, and he helped me to not only in understanding what it would take to fix the damaged fork, but also went above and beyond in helping to contact the previous bike shop that had packed my bike incorrectly. He took plenty of photos of the bike and its packaging, and truly became an advocate for my bike to be fixed. He was patient and thorough in explaining everything to me, and was willing to text, email, and call the previous bike shop to make sure the repair was fair and reasonable. This is by far the best customer service I have ever experienced, and thanks to Skyler's hard work, what was first a very stressful situation has transformed into something manageable, repairable, and affordable. read more

Skylar was helpful with advice on what would work conversion wise with used stuff and what I should buy brand new.....Although they work on bikes I wanted to learn how to readjust the brake components myself and he helped me with tips as I got stuck along the way. I usually hate going to bike shops. Owners are usually so snobby/mean and unwilling to share any knowledge to the point of just pure frustration. Not here. The owners of this shop were both super nice and friendly. They helped me build up an old frame I had with new/used parts and were super helpful with suggestions and know-how. They were willing to show me how to make repairs myself and communicated everything very clearly, even despite my extreme awkwardness and shyness. They even threw in some free product when they realized what I had paid for didn't allow for the best result. Swell customer service! I highly recommend this shop. A bit delayed review. They tuned my bike around June 2017, and I couldn't be happier with the final result. Even though I had to bring it back a week after due to some squeaking sound when breaking, caused by a slightly wrong choice of a break pad (I have an older bike), Ashley diagnosed the error quickly and re-installed the older style pad in no time. This place is great, fast and reasonably priced. My bike tire burst this morning and is my main way of transportation besides walking. I have never needed to repair a bike myself and was clueless on where to even start. They responded quickly via email/text the same day. Most places have a wait by a few weeks to get your bike in. I was able to get both my tires and tubes replaced within a few hours. Quick, convenient and helpful! I'm so glad they are open especially during covid and during the hazardous air quality during the fires. I buy a new bike about once a decade. My old Kona was aging badly after 13 years of hard service and between the pandemic bike shortage, a move in the industry away from making bicycles for tall people and my budget it took a lot of searching to find the right bike. I found one in Portland (at a different shop) 130 miles from my home. This other shop couldn't be bothered to have it ready for me to test ride when I arrived despite giving then a couple days notice and tried to sell me a bike costing several hundred dollars more. . While I wanted the bike, I really hated the idea of paying someone who seemed not to care about my business. I emailed every Jamis dealer in Oregon and located one similar bike at Kenton Cycles. I emailed them and they held the bike and had it ready for me when I arrived and explained the new technology that had arrived since 2008 and how to care for it, and generally treated my time and business as important to them. They had a good selection of bikes price range and use wise as well as a clean and organized repair space. While I may never go there again die to the distance, I would not hesitate to recommend them looking for a good sales/service option in Portland. They have a solidly "Old School LBS" vibe where they sell what they trust and maintain what they sell. SO: Good selection, fair prices, good people. read more

I'm very happy with the parts and service that I received at Kenton Cycle Repair. My touring bike had a problem with a rim strip that I didn't install correctly, and failed during a ride. I rolled in to Kenton Cycle Repair and discussed my bike's current issue, as well as an international bike tour that I'm embarking on in a few days. We discussed tire choices appropriate for the roads that I'd be encountering during my trip, as well as my gear. The tech recommended some better tire options for my consideration. I agreed to a different set of tires, which would much better suit my needs. I did go to pick up the bike, and asked if anything else was amiss. The tech mentioned that the rear derailleur seemed bent. It surely was! I agreed to a replacement, which, like the tires and tubes, was on hand at the shop. The bike is now ready for a tour. This shop lives up to all the previous reviews. I'd give 6 stars if I could. I took a stuck tire in, and within minutes it was getting fixed at a great price. Most of all though, the whole experience was so welcoming. I know very little about bikes, and not once did I feel intimidated or looked down upon. Starmichael is one of the friendliest people/shop owners I've met. This shop is so down-to-earth I feel like I am underground. I literally just waltzed in with my bike and Starmichael gladly took it and put in on the rack and gave me a quick estimate while we talked and talked. He even answered questions about a new bike for my wife. The whole shop is small, but it feels like a great community. Everyone in the shop had a good laugh about my story about the previous bike snob who worked on my bike. It felt like a good cozy place to be and interact and shop. While discussing my old beat up bike the owners didn't recommend riding it as the accident I got into with it made the bike unsafe for riding. I appreciated the up front assessment and would gladly have them work on any bike I end up purchasing. I highly recommend this shop if you are in the area. read more

I found Kenton Cycles while searching for somebody to braze on some cantilever posts on an old frame-an "upcycle" for one of my daughters. I knew I'd be in a queue at any of the more prominent frame builders in town, but Starmichael said he'd turn it around fairly quickly, and at a reasonable price. He did both with enthusiasm and a sharp eye for detail-found and fixed a couple of other small issues on the frame. This place is really 2 shops in one. The first is an ultrafriendly neighborhood bike shop, the kind that every community should have. Many shops I've been to are into pushing boxes out the door-new bikes, clothing, etc. Kenton Cycles appears to do most of their business in repair and upgrades. They've got a large assortment of used and vetted parts to keep your costs down. The 2nd shop is a serious frame and rack building, randonneur style shop. I live in the neighborhood, recently walked by and was happy to see a new small business. A few days later, my bike got a flat. I needed new tires anyway so I called the shop. They said to come right in. The prices were affordable and the service was great. They would've had all the work done in 30 minutes, but I chose to run some errands and came back a few hours later. I have received the services I requested and my bike also got tuned up in several other areas, no charge. I was told the bike was in need of a few new parts in the near future (chain is worn, a pedal cracked). They made me some recommendations that I plan to follow up on after the New Year. I took my road bike in for and overhaul and some upgrades. Rich took care of what I needed, let me know what would work and what wouldn't with my upgrade plan, and got it all done right.
