This company had to be just sitting and stalking my friend's parking lot for her apartment building. My son parked in a handicapped spot for 20 minutes and when he came out his car was gone. He had no idea who took it, but friends said they had heard of a scamming towing company called Kent's so they went there and of course it was there. They were very rude, ignored him, loud music blaring and then told him $320 in cash only. He did not have cash, so he said that maybe he could come back in the morning and they said it would cost more the next day. Someone has to put a stop to this towing company. (b) $25 for each period of 24 consecutive hours that the vehicle is stored at an outdoor storage facility. (c) $35 for each period of 24 consecutive hours that the vehicle is stored at an indoor storage facility. Note: The daily storage charge under par. (b) or (c) can be collected by a towing service the first minute after notice of the tow is given to a law enforcement agency by the towing service. A second daily storage charge cannot be collected until 24 hours after the time at which notice is given to law enforcement, subject to the limits for closed storage facilities specified in s. A towing service may collect charges under this paragraph only if any of the following applies: 1. The removed vehicle possesses unusual characteristics, such as size or mechanical condition that make the maximum removal charge under par. (a) unreasonably low, or has a gross vehicle weight rating or registered weight of 10,001 pounds or more. 2. The location in which the removed vehicle was parked contains certain spatial constraints or limited access to the parked vehicle impeding the tow that make the maximum removal charge under par. (a) unreasonably low. 3. The roundtrip travel by the towing service exceeds 20 miles. A towing service may charge a surcharge of $3.00 per mile under this subdivision for miles in excess of twenty miles. Mileage is based on roundtrip mileage from the storage facility to return thereto. The towing service shall establish the mileage from the tow truck odometer and shall include on the tow slip the beginning and ending odometer readings to the 1/10 per mile. If the tow truck is dispatched from a location other than the storage facility, the one-way mileage between the location from which the vehicle is removed and the storage facility shall be multiplied by two. Mileage fractions less than 5/10 shall be omitted, and mileage fractions of 5/10 or more shall be rounded up to the nearest whole number. Note: Pursuant to s. 349.13 (3m) (dr) 2., Stats., a towing service is prohibited from collecting any charges for the removal or storage of an illegally parked vehicle towed under s. 349.13 (3m), Stats., if the towing service has not complied with the requirement under s. 349.13 (3m) (d) 2., Stats., to notify law enforcement prior to removing the vehicle. My car was parked for approximately 10-15 minutes at The Reserve Student Living. My student and I walked to a student parking lot to retrieve the required guest parking pass to put in my vehicle...and when we got back my car had been towed by Kent's. So obviously he was patrolling the lot and as soon we left my vehicle, he towed it. Interacting with him was the most disturbing experience I've ever had with any business owner. He was angry, rude, condescending, and actually mocked and mimicked me as I tried to explain the situation to him. He then makes sure that you have to use the ATM he conveniently has in his shop saying he does not take credit cards, even though he advertises that he does. (Sort of a convenient way to deal in cash and not have a traceable income). I'm not sure what kind of agreement the Reserve Student Living Apartment complex has with him, but it certainly seems to be a predatory arrangement. If I could give him 0 star I would. Said he'd pick me up in 10-15 minutes to take me to his shop, he ended up making me and my friend wait 30 minutes in the rain. Then when he got there, he said he only had one seat available, even though the other seat only had a clipboard and jacket. When asked if he could just move it he said that I could just wait till the morning to get my car. It was so sketchy, the only reason why i got in is because there was a woman next to him, but my friend had to walk to the shop. Then he said it would be $320 cash, even though he didn't say that on the phone, he then proceeded to fight and argue with me about it. when I brought up that $320 was ridiculous price he said " do you own a tow truck, do you own a tow company, how would you know?" If I could give zero stars i actually would! i was parked in the lot to my apartment, and he towed my vehicle out of it. My parking pass had "fallen" my car was towed and I was charged 300+ for under a half a mile drive. I am talking 2 turns, one out of the lot, and one 2 blocks down into his lot. the best part is I had been in there multiple times to see if I could get any discount and he wouldn't budge an inch. then when i finally had the money one day and I was on the phone crying to my dad I heard Kent himself walk into the back room and tell his coworker "watch this" before coming out of the back room and once again looking coy as ever telling me how much it would cost to get my vehicle, again this whole time I am balling because I am a BROKE college student. I HATE CALLING FOR A TOW. Yet I did. Broke down by kwik trip on plover road in plover wi I called 3 local tow companies and ask about prices. Now I preface this w I drive a 06 ford f350 sd crewcab dually. It's a BIG truck. And I know from past experience it requires a flatbed tow truck. Those typically are a flat "hook up" fee plus amount per mile. 1st place quoted....$75 hook up plus $4 per mile. I called another to compare and quoted $85 hook up plus $5 per mile. Then I decided to call the 3rd... much MUCH TO MY DETRIMENT ... Kent's service. The guy that answered " Cody", when asked what their price per mile for a flatbed tow was asked where.i was and where was I going? I told him and he asked ifni knew how many miles. I told him google maps said from my location to my front door was 41 miles. He asked about truck.... reg pickup or contractor type truck body. I stated it was a crewcab dually but the bed was a normal truck bed not a contractor bed( flatbed, tool box bed etc). This POS quoted " if that's the actual mileage your looking at $250 plus tax". I questioned asking that's $250 plus tax total? " yes". I agreed and he said he was 15.min from me. 1 hour 22 mins later...... flatbed shows up... laod and go. After passing the exit creating the 41 miles... driver takes the next exit and a Sunday drive detour then get to house. Where I give him cc and writes up the tow. He then calls to office for the tax on a $445.00 tow. When I asked WTF he tells me it's a standard $200 hook up and $6 per mile....tell him what u was told by giy at office he questions the person and on speaker the lying pos says " I told him the milage would be about $350 plus tax. I didn't tell him a hook up cus I didn't know what kind of truck it was," 1 will lie to your face and the other prick will swear to it . Kent's not only fixed my tire (unexpectedly popped hitting exposed rebar in a parking lot) the next day after it happened but also worked with my extended warranty people to fix an issue that was happening that I didnt even realize! As a college student, with family hours away, I found myself at Kents. Horrible communication. I was in Point from out of town and parked my car in a permit only apartment lot adjacent to a bar. At about 10 pm I came out to leave and discovered my car was gone. I thought it was stolen and called the police. The police new who had my car and said Kent's Towing had it. I called Kent's at 10:14 pm and was told by Corey that I couldn't get my car till Sunday morning and someone would call me Sunday morning. No call Sunday morning so I called thvfem. They said Kent had a meeting and someone would get back to me. I had to leave town and get medication from my home because mine was in my car. Kent finally called me at 415 pm and I told him I was 80 miles away and I'd get the car Monday am. Got dropped off at his shop Monday and I was the 3rd person in line with similar experience. He charged me $300 cash only and said I was lucky that he'd drop the $50 a day storage fee. Told me he had an 80 hr week so he was too busy. Smug, arrogant and downright disrespectful. Kents business is a SCAM and not friendly. Was in Stevens Point to pick up my daughter for winter break from college. She currently resides in an apartment not even a half mile down the road from Kents. Two of her roommates were just leaving as we pulled into the apartment parking lot. When they came back 20mins later my car was apparently towed. They asked if we moved the car I stated no and didn't think anything about it. Upon leaving the apartment to travel back home (Fond du Lac) my car was truly gone. Had to call the apartment owners to get the number for the towing company. When I called them, they had me on hold for several minutes and when they came back online, they said they had my car and would be $275.00 to get it back. I indicated that was insane and response was "well if you want your car back that is what you pay". Daughters' roommate drove the not even half a mile down the road to pick it up. When my daughter and I entered the place, I gave him my credit card he looked at me and said, "oh we only take cash". My daughter indicated to him that it would have been nice to know that information when we had talked to you. Found and ATM and returned to Kents. I was furious with them by now. The next day I called them as I did not get a receipt and asked them to send it to me the response was, we don't do that. I indicated to him that he should have been given a receipt and he said I didn't ask. What an ASS!!!!! called my insurance company if this type of towing was covered. Unfortunately, it was not but explained the whole story. They told me that the price was EXTREME especially for the distance it was towed and that this company is definitely a scam. My insurance company stated it's based on distance. Looked up National Average for towing, which is based on distance, 5 miles and less should be $35 to $125. Extremely grateful to have been doing business with Kent's for over 5 years. They do great work and are always super helpful. They do very thorough work and I have never been dissatisfied. Extremely professional and a "go out of their way to make sure you're safe" ethic. One Sunday I went out to see I had a flat tire and even though the shop isn't open I called and they came out to my house and took my car to their shop after church to make sure they could get my tire changed first thing Monday morning. I don't know if any other place would do this but I'm certainly glad that Kent's did for me that day. I've never been disappointed by pricing as they explain exactly what product choices you have and which ones are best and why. Their mechanics are top of the line and do great work. I had hydroplaned off the interstate as my wife and I were coming home in a driving rain storm, and we ended up at the bottom of the embankment facing the opposite way. We both thought the car was going to roll as it spun around while sliding down the embankment, but we were blessed that it didn't. I called Kent's because I could think of their name. I had gone there for service many years ago and was happy with them, but after we bought a one-year-old car still on warranty I started going to the dealer for service. Back to the rain storm - Kent himself answered when I called at about 9:30 pm. He was on another towing run, but he had his son call me back. In a few minutes his son was on the road for what would have been about a 20 minute drive to where we were. While we were waiting a State Police officer stopped to see if we were OK. The rain had let up some, and he walked around our car in the tall grass looking for obvious damage. Discovering none, he offered to try to drive our car up the embankment. He was successful, and after determining that the car was drivable he went on his way. I called the tow truck to tell the driver I didn't need him after all. I offered to pay for his time since I had gotten him out at such an hour in such terrible weather. He cheerfully refused, saying he was just glad we were going to get home OK. The next morning I took the car to Kent's to have it examined to see what damage had been done. It was the least I could do by way of saying "Thank you!" The only thing was a bent and dangling heat shield, which they were able to salvage and secure in place. They did discover, however, that both of our rear tires were almost completely bald, which was probably the reason we had hydroplaned. They installed the new tires the next day. They are very friendly, and I think very competent. I've been taking my service needs to them since that night, especially since the place I had been going didn't tell me about the wear on my rear tires when I had my oil changed only 1,000 miles or so before this incident. All it needed was a 150 dollar alternator They gave her a cost of 825 dollars to replace an alternator. Thank god she was intelligent enough to realize that an alternator doesn't cost 825 dollars. BUT it's the only place I know of that 60% of the time pulls your car right in WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT and 50% of the time has it fixed in a few hours AND IF IT'S A BIG JOB STILL USUALLY HAS IT DONE THE NEXT DAY!! unless theres a parts issue such as waiting for them. There are some employees who are better then others but Kent and his Son Cody have always acted NOT PROFESSIONAL but BETTER they treat everyone like a friend. I've had issues and problems with the place but I just called them last week and it was -22 Windchill because my Car was stuck in the ditch and they said it would be TWO HOURS BECAUSE THEY WERE BACKED UP.... NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH KENT' SERVICE! Kent, the owner of Kent's Service Center and Towing is an unethical businessman that takes advantage of college students by excessively charging for services and holding their vehicles as hostage. Do not patronize his business. Our son and 2 of our daughter's friends were spending the weekend in Stevens Point at her apartment. They had parked their vehicles in the apartment complex and they ended up getting towed. Kent towed their vehicles at 11:00 p.m. on Friday night. When the kids called to get their vehicles they were told that it would cost $260 EACH and that they had to pay in cash. The vehicles were towed less than 2 miles and held for less than 24 hours. He refused to take credit card, yet his website and door stated that credit cards were an accepted form of payment. He tried to justify the excessive price and became immediately belligerent refusing to take payment and give the kids their vehicles. He pushed my husband out of shop and said that we needed to leave and come back on Monday. We ended up calling the police in order to get our vehicles. When calling, he stated that it wasn't the first time he had the police called. He then increased the price to $300 EACH per vehicle. As a business owner, Kent is a bully that takes advantage of customers and demands cash so that customers have no recourse after he collects the money. The police stayed until we were able to retrieve the vehicles. Had we not called the police, we would not have gotten our vehicles, the kids would have missed school on Monday and he would have charged them holding fees for the weekend. I was in a real pickle with a flat tire in Stevens Point late on a weekday sometime around 9 or 10 pm. I'm a nontraditional student that commutes about 40 mins one-way to the university and I had a big presentation the following day and was looking at having to get a hotel for the evening because I didn't think my car was going anywhere until the following morning. I was able to drive my car to their shop and was planning on just leaving it there until the morning when they opened back up at which point I would have them fix my tire because it had a nail stuck in it. As I was gathering my school work from the car, a young man came out of the building and asked if I had an appointment the following day. I explained to him that I didn't have an appointment or a spare tire in my car and that I had a big presentation tomorrow and was planning on staying in a hotel. With out any hesitation or a second thought, he told me to drive it around back where he patched up my hole and filled my tire with air. The whole process took about 10 mins and he did it for me free of charge. He wouldn't even accept a tip. This was an incredibly kind gesture and it saved me from having to get a hotel for the evening. I'm now living in Stevens Point and this place will have my business for as long as I'm in the area. It's now been several months since he patched the hole in my tire and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. I LIVE on a apartment property and decided to park outside my garage for the night since it was raining and I wanted it to wash my car. I woke up the next morning to find my car gone. They said that they didn't need to tell me because I didn't have my permit in the window at the time. This morning we called to check on our reservation and confirm that we are coming to pick up our penske truck for moving tomorrow because we know things can go wrong and to cover all of our bases. Unfortunately, we got a call back this morning from someone at base saying that despite store hours and websites clearly okaying that morning's pick up was fine, that for some reason they were closed and no one was there to do the paperwork process. I called her back to clarify as the phone dropped on one of us. She then tells me she pulled some strings to make sure we can pick it up this morning. Okay, problem solved, cool. It set us all back some time, but in the end, it worked out just fine. No big deal. Until we get there... we show up and hour after our original pick up time, due to their mix up with who was going to be there to complete the process, and the, who I am going to assume was the owner, in a very patronizing way, had repeated that we are indeed the ELEVEN O CLOCK APPOINTMENT and that they let him on lunch because they were "waiting and waiting and waiting" so we would have to come back in an hour. We left as it was no issue at all, just another hick up. However, the guy acted like a total ---- about it. Unfortunately that left a bad impression. As the whole thing was not our fault, but was an issue that they advertised that the truck available for pick up today but in truth something wasn't updated on the website or even that they only have the mind to train one or two employees how to complete a pensky order instead of having a thorough and efficient business while thinking ahead what could go wrong if you only have one employee who knows how to run that system and they are off for the day. So, like I said, it was no issue to us to have to run around and make all these phone calls. ---- Happens. But this guy, Kent, took it to a whole different level and blamed his customers, who mind you have no issue going the long route (imagine having one of those entitled soccer moms blow her top off in there) for his lack of business sense. Upon returning to the place an hour later when Shane was off his lunch, Kent makes sure to loudly proclaim "Well I am going to make this as easy as possibly on you, as it is is your day off and your eleven o clock is here". I have never seen (who i am assuming is the owner) any employee, especially at a car shop, act so passive aggressive in my life. I almost burst out laughing. I didn't know that was what kind of business Kent here was running (my apologies if this wasn't Manager Kent and it was just a coincidence name). I couldn't believe someone would behave so childishly. At least it was so very refreshing to have Shane take over and complete the truck info. He was a pleasure to work with and went the total extra mile for us. We really appreciate his effort. 5 star employee and I am not saying that as in comparison to Mr.Kent. Shane is a whole different kind of employee that is hard to find most places. So in the end, it all worked out just fine. I just thought it was important to mention they check themselves and learn how to speak and act like a professional adult. I'll be sure to pass this info around. How embarrassing for a couple of mid 20 year olds to hold more class than a supposedly respected business man. read more
