If it were possible, I would give this location zero stars. My experience with the customer service on the morning of June 16, 2026, was extremely disappointing. I found the staff in the front office to be unprofessional, discourteous, and lacking the level of respect and customer care that members of the public should reasonably expect. Based on this experience, I do not plan to adopt from this location again. The interaction left a negative impression and raised concerns about the quality of customer service being provided. I hope management reviews these concerns and takes appropriate steps to improve staff professionalism and customer relations. My sweet old lady (16 year old) went missing while we were out of state. I have never been away from my girl for longer than 2 days. I called to try and see if she was brought in to the shelter and I was basically told "if I want her back...I have to come and look for her on my own" when I explained that I emailed a photo and that she was chipped they said "how are we supposed to know which dog is yours?" When asked to talk to supervisor Heidi to ask that perhaps they could teach a little kindness with important she began raising her voice at me and telling me that I was the problem. I pray my girl is founded but I have no hope that they will help at all. read more

Even young healthy dogs are put down just because they don't have space. It is heartbreaking. Amazing dogs at Kern County. It's far, but so worth the drive. This shelter is pretty well run to be honest. I don't get the best vibe from staff all the time but that's kind of standard I think at any municipal shelters. They run into too many erratic people. But they actually seem fully staffed here so much that they can perform all duties necessary to a shelter. They have a four person behavior team, an enrichment program, and all dogs get walked three times a day. According to a staff member. I don't have reason to believe she makes that up since I'm no one important. People are discouraged from networking dogs here by posting videos unless they're volunteer made and supervisor approved, so that seems like unnecessary red tape. I don't like the attitude that advertising dogs outside the shelter, without control by management, is a bad thing. Or meeting with a dog that you personally may not adopt. It is a management control issue to me. I understand it but if there is time in the day, and staff, to do that stuff, why not. This is a high intake shelter so they euthanize quite a bit. Priority should be getting them out and keeping them out at any cost (especially the cost of "free"), and moreso because they receive tons of full puppy litters here. They have a doggie day out program it says, I'm not sure how often but they do post the notes publicly for that. Main gripe about here is lack of exposure because no one comes to Bakersfield. There is literally no point making that scenario worse by blocking dog access. Not like shelters care what happens to animals after they're out of the facility anyway. The staff is very rude and these people are not for helping animals. I found and saved a chihuahua from a park nearby down the street from this facility because he wouldn't leave my dogs side and had no collar around a busy road so I didn't want him getting hit. I brought him to the rescue thinking they'd take the dog and find his home but they took all of MY information down and afterwards told me I couldn't bring the dog to their facility because my address is in shafter...yes I live in shafter... but I FOUND THE DOG IN BAKERSFIELD! And told me to take the dog home with me! Don't get me wrong the dog is sweet and all but I have my own pets already and was only trying to save this chihuahua from getting hurt. I've only been here once, nor did I adopt any pet from here so maybe this review won't be the most helpful. This is the worst condition shelter I have ever seen and I hope there aren't other shelters similar to this. 10+ dogs are sharing the same kennel with no food or water. They are covered in their own feces and visible cuts all over. When you go to a shelter, the dogs are usually jumping/barking every time someone walks by them. Not a single animal is barking here. Every single one is laying down, lonely, hungry, evidently neglected and most likely sick with the living conditions they're in. It absolutely smells horrid, with pee all over the floors, not wiped or cleaned. It's pretty hard to walk around without covering your nose due to the stench. I can guarantee these animals are coming home sick or injured, so keep that in mind if you're looking to adopt from here. I get it's a shelter, but they could at least be getting fed during the time they're there. There's a group of staff standing in the corner laughing and chatting while there's puddles of pee everywhere you walk. Everything is so disorganized and staff could care less about the people walking in the door. Not a single person spoke to us, and upon entering, you just grab a ticket and wait for your number to be called, as if you're at a DMV. The kennels are fully open to walk through, and I all I heard was rude staff fighting back on customers. I ended up adopting a pup from SPCA, where they were seen by a vet to ensure they were 100% healthy, received vaccinations, and send you home with a collar, leash, microchipped and a brand new bag of dog food that was regularly being fed to them while in the shelter. read more

This county's solution to their problems is to build bigger and more beautiful buildings that never benefit the people or in this case the animals. I am mentioning this because the Director mentioned a new building as a solution in an article. The leadership of Kern County Animal Services have done little to advocate for animals, i.e. cat that was shot by a police officer for fun. Instead of advocating for animals, they make a standard statement and then do nothing. While most counties do community outreach and education, this county does not. Instead of leading and organizing, they refer to countless organizations that are using the same broken system. Numerous times I was told to just let strays die. I spent thousands of dollars and spent a lot of time taking animals to different counties so that they could get services they desperately needed because Kern County was incapable and unwilling to help their animals and community. The county, along with animal services, needs to stop shrugging at problems while using the excuse that it is like this everywhere. It is not, Kern County has a bad reputation for a reason and leadership would be wise to learn from others. read more

I recently visited our local shelter and found out they are overcrowded. The facility can hold about 100 animals, and I heard there are over 400. Staff work hard cleaning the kennels. I've been there twice this past week. There are some people in our community who are dropping off healthy dogs and litters of puppies. Most of these dogs are so well-behaved. Please share this info n get more dogs adopted. If you can not adopt, sign up to be a volunteer n share info or foster a dog so you can help make room for another. You can go in the shelter n take photos n videos of Long-term residents (signage indicates which dogs are LTR) n share your photos on your social media to get the word out so they can get fostered or adopted. Many other opportunities to help such as signing up as a short-term volunteer so you can take a dog out of the kennel for a few hours during Streets of Bakersfield event on certain Saturdays. Let's be a community who provides solutions and not just complain n hope the next person will help! Staff is overwhelmed, so you won't likely get anyone to answer the phones. Two stars because the 1st officer who came out was professional and respectful. Zero stars for the 2nd guy who came out. I have neighbors who are neglecting their puppies. No water, no shelter, no toys, no attention, it's awful. The 2nd guy treated me awful. First, he outed me by parking at my house, shouting my name, and loudly asking if I was the one who called. All in front of the neighbors. Then he got rude and condensing to me. He said let me explain "so that you can understand." I told him I was sure I could understand anything he said as I do have a PhD. I don't know why he got so adversial with me. I was the one who called. I tried to ask why he was defending animal abusers. I finally gave up and called his supervisor. It's been 2 weeks and the supervisor never called back. I called again today and got him. One really learns the value of humility walking through these doors at KCAS. There are so many smart, loving animals here, that it's really hard to walk away and not remember the faces of the animals, thinking why can't one do more. It reminded me that life can be unpredictable, and when things fall through, Kern County Animal Services is the safety net that gently cradles these animals to safety. The staff on this location are loving and so dedicated to helping these animals recover, feel better, and find forever homes that they deserve. they've developed a really great system for identifying the needs of the dogs, kittens, and others (like guinea pigs - which are currently still available to adopt) with their perspective areas. There are a lot of puppies that are available to adopt as well. Each week, Kern County animal services posts on their facebook page and features some of the adoptable animals. Pictures are also available on their website. Two years ago, we fostered kittens and adopted two wonderful kitties (that are now kitty teenagers), and they are the most wonderful additions to our home. We bonded with them when they were kittens, and they hardly require any work at all (we've got our own nail trimmer, and when they get dirty, we also give them baths). They are the most precious things, and since they were used to nail clippings at a younger age, as well as immunization shots, they are easy to take care of. Recently, I started becoming more involved with KCAS and was able to observe the amount of work that is needed with taking care of the animals is kind of really overwhelming. KCAS is a wonderful place to volunteer, and they are looking for more volunteers at this time. You can simply go onto their website and fill out a form. I was contacted within 2 weeks. I recently adopted a puppy here on a day advertised as free. Not true! Paid $20 and a the cutest most previous puppy ever! The front desk clerk who handled the adoption was horrible! Mean lady! No manners! Speaks super fast, rude, and difficult to understand. I tried to be polite and hold my tongue about her but couldn't! Me and my girlfriend adopted two pets from here, one kitten and one puppy. I am currently fostering and they provide a lot of food and a good amount of puppy pads. The puppy has kennel cough, and as soon as I called to tell them, they had medicine ready for him. They are also good with setting up and honoring the appointments. It can get really busy so make sure to grab a ticket as soon as you walk in so by the time you look through all the pets and come back with who you wanna adopt, you could get called up faster (: I think most of these reviews are misdirected to them, as I have only had a pretty positive experience here. read more

I read the reviews and can't agree with the negativity. We visited the SPCA and Bakersfield City Shelter (see previous reviews) before coming here. This facility is clean, with staff walking around cleaning constantly. I realize they've had some sickness arrive, which we were notified of, and happens despite the best cleaning protocols. The staff were friendly and asked us several times both in front and in the main building if we needed help. When we wanted to do a meet and greet we only waited a few minutes to have the dog we saw pulled into a room. The gentleman that helped us answered questions and stayed while I did some temperament testing. He was patient while I called in my family who also met the dog. Our chosen dog was not neutered so we had to come back today, Monday. We chose him Friday. The place was very busy and the staff apologized repeatedly for keeping us waiting. Some patience is required because it's busy, and that's okay. The staff do care and it's not easy to work in a shelter. Please have some grace and patience with the workers and volunteers. They want to help you. They want to see pets adopted. They do the best they can. Our new dog is home. He's settling in nicely. His neuter looks well done and clean and we pray he stays healthy. I've been a foster with kern county animal shelter for going on now three years. I've contemplated making this review for quite some time but after my last experience with Kimberly ...I feel like I must. Kimberly ALWAYS has a bad attitude and I mean REALLY BAD. She is unfriendly and makes fostering less fun. She truly seems to hate her job. She goes out of her way to be rude to customers. I've had foster friends complain to me about her attitude as well. Kimberly...if you hate your job so much PLEASE quit. You're unbearable to deal with anyways. Kern county animal shelter...please do better. Unbelievable! My friend was evicted from his home illegally along with several other tenants including the landlady. The landlady was seriously ill and could not walk. All 3 of her dogs went to Fosters. Several of the Fosters were irresponsible and 2 of the dogs ran away. One was never found. The other was taken in to this shelter. The asshats here sent a letter to an old address No phone call to the dogs owner . . .one damn letter which never reached her. They have now put her dog up for adoption to new owners without her consent. Today the chip company called to have her name released from the chip and she was in shock that he had been adopted out without her consent. I get that this facility is overrun with stray dogs due to negligent pet owners, however to just adopt out someone's pet without their owner's consent is illegal. I went to the "pets available for adoption" page online and found a dog I was interested in. I filled out the adoption form online and emailed them. Crickets .... No response. I then called and it said the voicemail was full. If shelters are as overcrowded as they say they are the agency should have someone dedicated to handling online inquiries. I get it that I don't live in Bakersfield anymore, however, I was interested in adopting one of the dogs they said they have available. Hmmm, Did I go to a different shelter? I finished reading all the reviews for this shelter, but I can't say I had the same experience. I have never been to a shelter and my sisters convinced me to come look at the animals. I wasn't looking to adopt on the spot. I wanted to look around and maybe come back to adopt. When I pulled in they had a few parking spots available. The shelter looked nice to me even from the outside. I have always imagine shelters very gloomy and dark. This place actually looked nice. We walked in and I was lost. There were many kittens at the front office/entrance. You can not adopt those kittens because they are not ready and because they say that they are too small. Those kittens are there because they need to be fostered. Of course, I did not know this but a staff member told me. There was a man on the front counter. I didn't catch his name, but he was the one that told us that if we were there to look at the dogs. My sister told him we wanted to see the dogs and cats. He was very nice to us. He directed us to the back and told us to go take a look at all the dogs and if we wanted to see the cats they were inside a separate room. Once we walked in the back we started to look at all the dogs. Yes, it does smell bad when you walk in. It's understandable with so many dogs in one small place. I really didn't like that, but once you are inside for awhile you get use to the smell. I didn't even notice it anymore when I saw how excited all the dogs were to see us walk in. It was honestly really hard to pick one since all of them were so cute and all of them need homes. Once my husband choose a dog a volunteer helped us. She was by our side for a long time. She took out the dog and took us to a room to see how the dog reacted to us. She also suggested a few dogs and we went inside a room with them as well. Our dog got along with us just fine. He even got alone with my one year old son. He didn't bark or jump on him. My son loved him because he was able to safely play with him. Guardian would sit down and let my son pet him. He was just the perfect dog to take home. Once we decided to adopt a dog we went to the cat room. There were less cats than dogs, but there are still a lot. They are all so cute. My little brother picked two cats. We were able to pet them but with aprons and gloves. We had to change them for each car we touched. Once we adopted our dog and cats we went to the front again. The lady at the front desk assisted us right away. She gave us the paperwork. All she asked for was an Identification card and $20 for the dog/$10 for both cats. This was a special for September. They gave us the cats inside two separate boxes and the dog with a leash. It wasn't a fancy leash, but it worked great during the time we needed it. Once we were leaving the lady that gave us the paperwork asked if she can take a picture of all of us. It was a great way to end the day and a better way for my new pets to say good-bye to the shelter. read more

Guys, Ladies, Thank you so much. Today you spayed a pregnant kitten of mine. I had all my cats neutered and spayed but after one died, I had room to take in a stray and didn't know she was pregnant! She had a litter of a whopping 7 and I couldln't home them all and before I knew it, one of her kittens was pregnant and the mother was pregnant again! I had too much to deal with. The shots, the neutering/spay/fleas/food/limits, etc. Thank you so so so much for helping me escape from kitten hell and I mean that. I love cats so much but too many are never good and things got out of hand for me and I needed help and you were there for me. Thank you so much for being here to help people and the animals. Your staff is wonderful and your place is so clean. I know what you do is very hard. I've had two bad experiences at the shelter on Fruitvale in just 2 weeks. The first time was told first person "In line at the door" gets to adopt. Wasn't true. It's actually 1st person on their parking lot in their cameras on that day has first bid on an adoption. Ok so I went back today to look at dogs. The doors state that 10 am is when you can go back and look at dogs. I was there at 9:59am just to be told "that part" won't be open for another 10 minutes because they are still cleaning. ok I wait 15 mins (10:15 am) to be able to look at dogs. I find a couple that I'm interested in meeting right away. I go up front where there are 3 women sitting at the front desk and give them info. They tell me to have a seat and wait for someone to help me. At 10:50 am I'm noticing I'm the only person waiting to meet 2 dogs. I ask why the wait is so long. I'm told that the workers clean the kennels at 10 am and then all take their breaks afterwards. As I sat there waiting I seen three dogs get dropped off or turned in. While I was in the back I noticed the kennels are overpopulated and watched a black aggressive dog attack and lock onto its kennel mate as it screamed and cried. These dogs need help out of there and I was an option for a dog today, however me going there today, to possibly adopt was not of great importance or even close to being a priority. I am searching for the perfect dog to adopt for our family of 4. I know that this will be a 15-20 year commitment, So my search is going to take as long as it takes, and when I can find the time during this busy season. I ended up leaving because I have a schedule. But I say all that to say this, this shelter needs BETTER MANAGEMENT. Cleaning shouldn't happen when you're open to the public to come view the dogs. The women at the front should be trained to go in the back and assist the public in meeting a dog. Because they all just sat up front doing nothing . I will continue my search, because we believe in saving a dog before purchasing for our family. I know there are a lot of good pups out there that just need a chance. Awful customer service! I just adopted a 6 month old black lab from this facility and I am extremely disappointed with everything about my adoption experience, except the dog I adopted. First after I had chosen the dog I had adopted, it took 2 hours to get everything situated and I spent 1.5 hours of that time being ignored. Then the woman who helped me was actually very nice. Then 2 days passed and I was able to pick up my new baby and we were so excited, and I asked if he was sick at all or if he had fleas and ticks so I could get medication from them for it. And the lady told me no. Then proceeded to hand me paperwork that said he had fleas and ticks. So I checked him when I got him and he was infested. So no biggie I cleaned him up and everything. That night he started coughing and hacking. I realized it was kennel cough and brought him back to receive some kind of treatment. And I was told that it was my fault. Can you believe it? I had the dog less than 2 days and somehow he developed kennel cough when my dog I already had at home was perfectly fine. It's very discouraging to ever want to adopt from here again when the employees are all rude and could care less about you or the animals. It's very sad and disgusting that they could leave these awful people responsible for these poor babies. I won't put down every employee, there was 2 women in the front who were very very nice and helpful. But everyone else was awful. Amazing facility. Literally annoyed at anyone who complains about this place. They are in the most impossible situation being a municipal shelter and having to take in all animals while somehow finding placement for all the animals so they can take the next ones in. Yes, I have had workers be rude to me. And you know what? That's fine. They have to see the saddest things and keep coming to work. They are heroes. I have adopted and fostered for kern county animal services and each experience has been rewarding. I'm there a lot these days with my fosters. 10/10 recommend as a place to volunteer and adopt from. You are saving lives when you get involved. Give these folks a break and realize what this place is and know that they make it better than most municipal shelters. My wife and I found a kitten that's about 6-8 weeks old and is sick. We found her huddled in a gutter. We took the kitten into the shelter to see if they could take her. They decided she was too old to take and not sick enough to take in as their current policy was to only take in sick, injured, or young cats. My only complaint was when I first got there they ladies at the front desk didn't even acknowledge me. I appreciate what this Shelter does. I recently adopted a Senior Chihuahua here on May 13. They had an adoption fee waived event and I had been looking for awhile for a dog that fit my current lifestyle. I saw Hazel Grace's profile in their online adoption gallery. It stated she was 12 years old. I also saw her on a couple of the walk through videos they do periodically. She looked very spry for 12 years old. So I went down to adopt her. When I got there her kennel card said she was only 6 years old, she had a URI, an inguinal hernia and had never been spayed. So when I filled out the paperwork they said I was entitled to have her Spayed and the hernia repaired by their Vet at no charge. I also wanted to get her teeth fixed right away so I took her to two different Vets to start the process. They both examined her and said her heart and lungs were strong. They said she did have a fatal condition called pyometra and having her spayed would take care of it. So I make the appointment for her to be spayed and the hernia repair right away. I took her to Kern Animal Services at 8 am to their surgery office. At 10 am that day a tech calls me and says the Vet has examined Hazel Grace and found she has a heart murmur and is afraid she will pass on the table. I replied I had her seen by two separate Vets and they did not detect a heart murmur. (I have had two Beagles with heart murmurs who later developed heart disease so I was anxious to see if Hazel Grace had any heart problems). Then the tech said and you know she is not 6 years old she is 12 plus years old according to the Vet. I told her about the mix up with the online gallery and the kennel card. I told her I knew her age, she is sweet, cuddly and very spry. I asked what is the recommendation? She said I could come get her, hand her back to them where she will be euthanized because of her issues or take a chance with the surgery. I knew she did not have a heart murmur, I suspected they didn't want to spend the resources on such an old dog. I said go ahead with the surgery. The tech said ok and we will pray hard for this little girl. She said she would contact me with the outcome. It was getting late without word and I tried to call their joke of a phone number that gets you nowhere. So about 15 minutes to 5 I selected dispatch and got them to connect me. She had made it and I could pick her up. It has been 10 days since and she has healed beautifully, she is happy and loving life and I am blessed. I am just posting this as a cautionary tale. They are overwhelmed, and hard working and much needed. read more

Called in and was told only way is for me to go to the shelter to identify. The woman on the phone said she would send someone out there and respond to me either way via email if they found my dog. Days go by and I hear nothing. So I follow up today, and her response was that dog isn't available anymore. I'm like excuse me, you told me you would follow up and you failed to do any! So her response was, well you can leave a message for my supervisor. I did just that, so we will see what happens. In reading everyone's postings so far, I'm concerned they probably just euthanized her instead since she was older. You should not run a shelter if you have a heart made of black. I can only hope I will have something better to say if the supervisor calls back. Update: *** Got a call back from the supervisor Nick. He was way more understanding and explained the situation to me. Unfortunately it does not sound like it was my dog, but I'm going to keep hopes that she is out there somewhere. They were pushing me to adopt a violent dog. When I opted for a different one they gave me so much pushback but they are such bad actors I knew it was for some other motive. Probably saving it for a rescue or a friend. Apparently I was a good enough candidate for the violent dog but not the normal puppy. In the end I asked for something in writing stating all adoption rules but all they did was get a fatter white woman to tell me no. Oh and their website doesn't work properly, they rarely answer the phone and never return e-mails. read more

This business promotes and ignores animal abuse. We have called extensive times over the course of TWO YEARS about abandoned neighbors dogs in the heat, and cold, barking ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. But as long as they have water, it's not neglect to them. They are a horrible organization who do absolutely nothing to enforce noise ordinance in Kern County. Please do not adopt dogs from them, that money will pay for staff, which will then do nothing for the community. read more

This place lies about being a "no kill shelter" took in some kittens that were abandoned in front of my work place. Stated that if kittens were not old enough they would euthanize them despite being healthy. read more

Ok so I've been making complaints to animal control for at least 8 months and they do not care about animals is it right to have little dogs in 108 degree weather ? I think it's neglect . Hasn't changed its worse than the dmv. Big lines and bad attitudes . One girl told me I wasn't in their county and I drove all the way to the east side for them to tell me Fruitvale was my county . Lazy and incompetent people. I went to adopt 2 of 3 possible kittens that had signs on their cages saying they would not be available until 2/10/2022. I went in @ 9:15am on 2/10/2022 to ask if I could check to make sure the kittens were still there. The lady at the desk told me 3 times that they were not open until 10. I was the only one in line. I waited until 10 and went back in and was told "If you're here for Felix, he was adopted at 8am." I asked how that was possible if they weren't open until 10am because Felix was 1 of the 3 I wanted. They couldn't give me a straight answer. I went back to see if the other 2 were there. Both were gone. All the kittens were gone. Only 2 older cats were left. Why in the hell did they make me wait 45 minutes just to find out all the kittens were gone? They were just too lazy to get up and unlock the door. read more
